An Exploration Of Communication Strategies For Effectively Organizing And Managing Collaborative Grant Writing Groups, Lisa Dopke

Masters Theses

The present research explored approaches to collaborative grant writing, as little is known about the details or range of variation in the processes that are currently deployed by professionals working within this context. Findings were used to build a typology of the roles specific to collaborative grant writing groups, provide a discussion of ideal group composition and leadership, and to identify and suggest ten best practice strategies for organizing and managing group dynamics and tasks during the phases of the collaborative writing process.

The Cnn Effect: Mass Media And Humanitarian Aid, Jared R. Bredeson Apr 2011

The Cnn Effect: Mass Media And Humanitarian Aid, Jared R. Bredeson

Senior Honors Theses

Mass media have great power and great responsibility. The CNN Effect states that when news media broadcast emotionally driven stories of human crisis, this provokes a major response by domestic audiences and political elites. This power to influence public policy can help save people from danger and even death. Acts of massive genocide were committed in Rwanda and Darfur. Because the media failed to act quickly and report accurately on these situations, many people lost their lives due to slow international reaction. News media need to learn from these tragic mistakes and never let genocide go on unnoticed by those …

Communicating During Crisis: A Case Study Of The 2010 Bp Gulf Oil Spill, Aubrey Nichole Villines Apr 2011

Communicating During Crisis: A Case Study Of The 2010 Bp Gulf Oil Spill, Aubrey Nichole Villines

Undergraduate Honors Thesis Collection

Crisis communication is an integral aspect of public relations that can have either positive or negative repercussions based upon the action that an organization responds. The manner in which an organization handles a crisis determines financial implications that may ensue, public perception and reputation of the organization, as well as the overall success or failure of the organization in the future. Consequently, Timothy Coombs asserts that the best crisis communication practice is to respond quickly, accurately, and consistently (Coombs, 2010: 28). Other scholars concur and add supplementary techniques which emphasize preparedness and responsibility. The present study was conducted to identify …

Why Anonymous Sources Are Used: Inside The Different Situations Calling For Reporter-Source Confidentiality, Erich Eisenach Apr 2011

Why Anonymous Sources Are Used: Inside The Different Situations Calling For Reporter-Source Confidentiality, Erich Eisenach

College of Journalism and Mass Communications: Theses

Anonymous sources for years have been a hard thing for editors to figure out.  In journalism, they’re the kind of factor that editors can’t live with, and yet they can’t live without.  That’s because for years, anonymous sources have been critical to the completion of many major stories.  Some of the situations they are used in are obvious, and yet some are not so obvious.  In the thesis below, which includes material from two of the most veteran journalists within Nebraska borders, I talk about anonymous sources and why they are used in certain situations.  Here, I acknowledge the people …

Visual renditions of campus buildings and fellow students as avatars emotionally connect students to feel a sense of presence and community within the virtual learning platform. Additionally, the ability to see and hear their …

Corporate Social Responsibility (Csr) Is The New Driver For An Ethical Public Relations Function, Lilia Cecconi

Symposium on Research and Creative Expression (SORCE)

Coombs and Holladay note that “Effective public relations can be a valuable part of strategic Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR). However, superficial CSR practice will result in a superficial CSR communication.” (Coombs and Holladay, 2010, 275) These authors further believe that “Public relations can help corporations to identify and promote partnerships with committed publics (typically activist groups).” This study explored the presence of CSR as mentioned on five corporate websites: Coca Cola, Wal-Mart, Pfizer, Nike, and Corona. For the study, an instrument measuring website characteristics was used to provide a benchmark for comparing the five websites. Finally, each website was examined …

The social interpretation of interpersonal communication through a global perspective provides insights into human adaptation. By focusing on the cultural adaptations of members of sports teams, one can view the amazing variety of approaches to the adaptation process. This study identified sports teams at Valparaiso University having a mix of cultures especially global in origin. Through interviews and focus groups, these global representatives of various cultures described the ways the teams have developed their mutual adaptation approaches. The theories of Speech Act, Social Constructionism, and Internationalism were primarily taken from the Hansen-Horn and Neff text: Public Relations: From Theory to …

Modern Public Relations Strategies: Revisiting Wheatley & Timmons’ 1994 First Alert Campaign, Victoria Brewton, Ricky Hoffman, Megan Hohenstein, Ryan Myers, Martha Ramette

Symposium on Research and Creative Expression (SORCE)

Our interest in this subject came after visiting Wheatley & Timmons, a public relations firm headquartered in Chicago, IL. The firm launched an extremely successful public relations campaign for First Alert in 1994. Our public relations class was asked to design an innovative campaign aimed at spreading awareness about carbon monoxide poisoning, acting as though no one had ever heard of it. The facts about deaths related to carbon monoxide are shocking. We had a lot of questions to answer, such as: How much do people really know, what are the most effective techniques for spreading general awareness, and what …
