The Epistemic Consumption Object And Postsocial Consumption: Expanding Consumer‐Object Theory In Consumer Research, Detlev Zwick, Nikhilesh Dholakia Aug 2006

The Epistemic Consumption Object And Postsocial Consumption: Expanding Consumer‐Object Theory In Consumer Research, Detlev Zwick, Nikhilesh Dholakia

College of Business Faculty Publications

We introduce the concept of the epistemic consumption object. Such consumption objects are characterized by two interrelated features. First, epistemic consumption objects reveal themselves progressively through interaction, observation, use, examination, and evaluation. Such layered revelation is accompanied by an increasing rather than a decline of the object’s complexity. Second, such objects demonstrate a propensity to change their “face‐in‐action” vis‐à‐vis consumers through the continuous addition or subtraction of properties. The epistemic consumption object is materially elusive and this lack of ontological stability turns the object into a continuous knowledge project for consumers. Via this ongoing cycle of revelation and discovery, consumers …

Product Placement During The Family-Viewing Hour., Harry C. Arnold Aug 2006

Product Placement During The Family-Viewing Hour., Harry C. Arnold

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The so-called family-viewing hour, the eight to nine o’clock hour of prime time, is one of the most watched hours of television by both adults and children. Advertisers, of course, favor shows that draw large audiences so their product presentations or commercials are witnessed by masses of people. Now, because of videocassette recorders and other similar control devices, viewers are eliminating commercials from their viewing experience1 and advertisers are clamoring for new ways to get their products into the mind of the consumer.2 To counteract this commercial avoidance by consumers, advertisers are embedding products within television programming thereby …

Necessary Knowledge For Communications Policy: Information Inequalities And Commercial Data Access And Usage In The Policymaking Process, Philip M. Napoli, Michelle Seaton Aug 2006

Necessary Knowledge For Communications Policy: Information Inequalities And Commercial Data Access And Usage In The Policymaking Process, Philip M. Napoli, Michelle Seaton

McGannon Center Working Paper Series

Communications policymaking increasingly relies upon large-scale databases manufactured and marketed by commercial organizations. Data providers such as BIA Research, Nielsen Media Research, and Arbitron play a vitally important role in aggregating the data that policymakers, policy analysts, and policy advocates rely upon in policy deliberations. In many ways, these data providers supplement the limited data gathering capacity of government bodies such as the FCC and NTIA and thereby help to bring a greater quantity of relevant data to bear on policy issues than would otherwise be possible. Indeed, these data are utilized extensively by stakeholders with an interest in policy …

Understanding Employees' Willingness To Contributeto Shared Electronic Databases: A Three-Dimensional Framework, Guowei Jian, Leo Wayne Jeffres Aug 2006

Understanding Employees' Willingness To Contributeto Shared Electronic Databases: A Three-Dimensional Framework, Guowei Jian, Leo Wayne Jeffres

Communication Faculty Publications

Work organizations increasingly adopt shared electronic databases. However, employees' unwillingness to contribute to shared resources undermines the utility of such technologies. Current research is limited to either a utilitarian or normative perspective. To advance understanding in this area, this study proposes a three-dimensional framework. It includes the utilitarian and normative perspectives as two complementary dimensions in addition to a third collaborative dimension. Based on this framework, the study identifies three key organizational processes and advances an additive model to predict employees' willingness to contribute to shared electronic databases. An empirical test was conducted to assess the model in a large …

Forum: In Memory Of Fred Jablin: What Might Have Been And Still Might Be, Kathleen J. Krone

Department of Communication Studies: Faculty Publications

I begin my term as forum editor by honoring the memory of Fred Jablin, an early leader in the field of organizational communication. I am quite certain that Fred would like to be remembered less for the tragic circumstances of his death than for the considerable contribution of his early work and the promising new directions in which his work was headed. Fred was, perhaps, best known for his early work in the area of superior-subordinate communication and then his later work in organizational socialization and communication. For at least a decade, his agenda-setting pieces on communicative issues in organizational …

Democracy, Hegemony, And Consent: A Critical Ideological Analysis Of Mass Mediated Language, Michael Alan Glassco Aug 2006

Democracy, Hegemony, And Consent: A Critical Ideological Analysis Of Mass Mediated Language, Michael Alan Glassco

Masters Theses

Accepting and incorporating mediated political discourse into our everyday lives without conscious attention to the language used perpetuates the underlying ideological assumptions of power guiding such discourse. The consequences of such overreaching power are manifest in the public sphere as a hegemonic system in which free market capitalism is portrayed as democratic and necessary to serve the needs of the public. This thesis focuses specifically on two versions of the Society of Professional Journalist Codes of Ethics 1987 and 1996, thought to influence the output of news organizations. This analysis exposes the problems inherent in the news media's focus of …

Internet Pr And New Gratifications In Sports: A New Way Of Communication Between Sports Organizations And Fans, Chang Wan Woo Aug 2006

Internet Pr And New Gratifications In Sports: A New Way Of Communication Between Sports Organizations And Fans, Chang Wan Woo

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This thesis uses content analysis, specifically thematic analysis, to investigate the message boards on Major League Baseball (MLB) teams' Web sites in order to 1) recognize in what ways sports teams' Internet message boards meet the unique gratifications of sports fans; and, 2) identify ways that sports PR practitioners can use Internet message boards for better (more gratifying) communication with sports fans. Thematic analysis of eight MLB teams' Web sites (the four with the highest winning percentages and the four with the lowest winning percentages) was conducted using Katz, Gurevitch, and Hass (1973) five gratifications categories and one additional "other" …

History, Identity, And Security: Producing And Consuming Nationalism In China, William A. Callahan Aug 2006

History, Identity, And Security: Producing And Consuming Nationalism In China, William A. Callahan

Research Collection School of Social Sciences

Chinese nationalism has ignited much debate among academics and the general public in both China and the West. Rather than search for the true core of Chinese nationalism, this essay will examine the curious custom of National Humiliation Day as an oblique entry into the politics of identity. The nation is not simply a question of people or territory, the author contends, but of time: the national time scripted by events such as National Humiliation Day. By comparing the differing practices of the holiday as it was celebrated in the early twentieth century and is observed in the early twenty-first …

WhoʼS Watching Us At Work? Toward A Structural-Perceptual Model Of Electronic Monitoring And Surveillance In Organizations, Scott C. D'Urso Aug 2006

WhoʼS Watching Us At Work? Toward A Structural-Perceptual Model Of Electronic Monitoring And Surveillance In Organizations, Scott C. D'Urso

College of Communication Faculty Research and Publications

Nearly 80% of organizations now employ some form of employee surveillance. This significant level of use infers a salient need for additional theory and research into the effects of monitoring and surveillance. Accordingly, this essay examines the panoptic effects of electronic monitoring and surveillance (EM/S) of social communication in the workplace and the underlying structural and perceptual elements that lead to these effects. It also provides future scholarly perspectives for studying EM/S and privacy in the organization from the vantage point of contemporary communication technologies, such as the telephone, voice mail, e-mail, and instant messaging, utilized for organizational communication. Finally, …

The Size And Development Of The Shadow Economy: An Empirical Investigation From States Of India, Kausik Chaudhuri, Friedrich Schneider, Sumana Chattopadhyay Aug 2006

The Size And Development Of The Shadow Economy: An Empirical Investigation From States Of India, Kausik Chaudhuri, Friedrich Schneider, Sumana Chattopadhyay

College of Communication Faculty Research and Publications

Using the state level data from India, this paper investigates the size of the hidden economy in Indian states over the period 1974/75 to 1995/96. Our analysis has shown that after liberalization of the Indian economy in 1991/92, the growth in the size of the hidden economy has decreased on an average. Our results show that the growth in the size of the hidden economy is approximately 4% less in scheduled election years than in all other years. We also demonstrate that the growth is significantly lower in those states where the coalition government is in power. An increased growth …

After The Flood: Anger, Attribution And The Seeking Of Information (Presentation), Robert J. Griffin, Janet Yang, Ellen Ter Huurne, Francesca Boerner, Sherry L. Ortiz, Sharon Dunwoody

College of Communication Faculty Research and Publications

In an effort to understand what motivates people to attend to information about flood risks, this study applies the Risk Information Seeking and Processing model to explore how local residents responded to damaging river flooding in the Milwaukee area. Anger at managing agencies was associated with the desire for information and active information seeking and processing, as well as with risk judgment, personal efficacy, lower institutional trust, and attributions for the causes of flood losses.
