Aggressive Communication, Parental Communication, And Sibling Communication, Kristi K. Eustice Jan 2000

Aggressive Communication, Parental Communication, And Sibling Communication, Kristi K. Eustice

Masters Theses

The family is often seen as the center of instruction for children and the base for learning communication patterns. Aggressive communication is often seen in the family, especially as a parenting method. In this thesis, the current state of available literature on aggressive communication in the family is examined. This includes parenting styles, communication relationships between one parent and one child, and the negative effects verbal aggressive communication has on children. A t-test is used to research the responses of 100 students who have verbally aggressive parents. At 2.59, the t-test supports the hypothesis that parenting communication styles concerning aggressiveness …

Self-Disclosure Within Intimate Romantic Relationships: Determining Relevant Relational Factors, Gretchen L. Clark Jan 2000

Self-Disclosure Within Intimate Romantic Relationships: Determining Relevant Relational Factors, Gretchen L. Clark

Masters Theses

The Romantic Intimacy Survey assessed the value of self-disclosure in intimate romantic relationships. Males and females place a stronger disclosure importance in specific intimate relationships, such as mom/female guardian, friends from college, friends from high school, previous romantic partners, dad/male guardian, cross-gender friends, and siblings. In addition, females place more disclosure importance than males on specific intimate relationships. These specific relationships included siblings, current roommates, instructors, and peers within social organizations. Males and females categorize relationships into different factors when assessed by a factor analysis. Males and females also thought different relationships had disclosure importance. Males thought adult friends should …

Analysis And Direction For The Changing World Of Breakfast Cereal Advertising: A Content Analysis Of 1998-99 Television Advertisements, Megan Ann Lane

Undergraduate Honors Thesis Collection

This investigation sought to build on past content analysis of children-focused advertising to better understand how advertisers have responded to the changing television advertising market. It is important because little attention has been paid to the effects of cable specialization and FCC regulations on the methods and appeals used in children-focused advertising.

Imprecise Answers In Distributed Environments: Estimation Of Information Loss For Multi-Ontology Based Query Processing, Eduardo Mena, Vipul Kashyap, Arantza Illarramendi, Amit P. Sheth

Kno.e.sis Publications

The World Wide Web is fast becoming a ubiquitous computing environment. Prevalent keyword-based search techniques are scalable, but are incapable of accessing information based on concepts. We investigate the use of concepts from multiple, real-world pre-existing, domain ontologies to describe the underlying data content and support information access at a higher level of abstraction. It is not practical to have a single domain ontology to describe the vast amounts of data on the Web. In fact, we expect multiple ontologies to be used as different world views and present an approach to "browse" ontologies as a paradigm for information access. …

Optimization Techniques For Data Intensive Decision Flows, Richard Hull, Francois Llirbat, Bharat Kumar, Gang Zhou, Guozhu Dong, Jianwen Su

Kno.e.sis Publications

For an enterprise to take advantage of the opportunities afforded by electronic commerce it must be able to make decisions about business transactions in near-real-time. In the coming era of segment-of-one marketing, these decisions will be quite intricate, so that customer treatments can be highly personalized, reflecting customer preferences, the customer's history with the enterprise, and targeted business objectives. This paper describes a paradigm called “decision flows” for specifying a form of incremental decision-making that can combine diverse business factors in near-real-time.

This paper introduces and empirically analyzes a variety of optimization strategies for decision flows that are “data-intensive”, i.e. …

Lifting The Veil: The Arts, Broadcasting And Irish Society, Brian O'Neill Jan 2000

Lifting The Veil: The Arts, Broadcasting And Irish Society, Brian O'Neill

Articles

This article examines the role played by broadcasting in Irish artistic and cultural life from independence in 1922 to 1960 with the onset of formal modernization. It examines the cultural context for the arts in early independent Ireland in which a mood of ambivalence and sometimes outright hostility to high culture prevailed. Rather than a profound disjunction between pre- and post-modernizing phases of Irish history, however, this article argues that there were important lines of continuity in cultural experience, in particular middle-class experience of the arts, which continue to inform Irish cultural life up to the present. Such cultural experience …

The Discipline Of Communication In Higher Education: Mutually Defining And Reciprocal Relationships, James W. Chesebro, David W. Worley Jan 2000

The Discipline Of Communication In Higher Education: Mutually Defining And Reciprocal Relationships, James W. Chesebro, David W. Worley

Journal of the Association for Communication Administration

This article discusses the status of communication studies in higher education. Communication and the discipline of communication are partially defined by the ways in which communication principles and strategies are identified and applied in college and university environments. How administrators and colleagues in other departments conceive of and utilize communication principles and strategies provide feedback to us, revealing their conceptions, attitudes, and beliefs about what communication is and what the study and use of communication involves. These applied communication uses constitute part of the meaning that communication possesses within a college or university environment. Using traditions as academic standards, virtually …

Defining The Field: Revisiting The Aca 1995 Definition Of Communication Studies, Charles J. Korn, Sherwyn P. Morreale, Don M. Boileau Jan 2000

Defining The Field: Revisiting The Aca 1995 Definition Of Communication Studies, Charles J. Korn, Sherwyn P. Morreale, Don M. Boileau

Journal of the Association for Communication Administration

This article deals with the problem of defining communication studies in higher education. In 1995, the Association for Communication Administration (ACA) convened a summer conference that produced a two-sentence definition of the field of communication. More than 100 conferees voted their unanimous approval of the definition, which was then disseminated nationally and used by communication scholar/teachers for a multiplicity of purposes. Given the potential utility of that definition and the expansion of communication studies since 1995, the present study surveyed ACA's current members to determine whether they are aware the definition exists, how they have used it, and the extent …

A Confrontation With Diversity: Communication And Culture In The 21st Century, Carolyn Calloway-Thomas, Thurmon Garner Jan 2000

A Confrontation With Diversity: Communication And Culture In The 21st Century, Carolyn Calloway-Thomas, Thurmon Garner

Journal of the Association for Communication Administration

This article highlights the problem posed by cultural diversity to communication in North America. Our motive in posing these questions is not to present a whirlwind tour of diversity, but simply to explore what we consider to be some important issues that are driving the human caravan in North America's shift from monoculturalism to multiculturalism. Answers to such questions should tell us a great deal about how to communicate in the next century. The essay is divided into three sections. Part one explores the framework of creolization and its implications for the communication discipline. Part two examines some social and …

Assessing The Perceived Effectiveness Of The Basic Communication Course: An Examination Of The Mass-Lecture Format Versus The Self-Contained Format, Timothy S. Todd, Lou Davidson Tillson, Stephen A. Cox, Barbara K. Malinauskas Jan 2000

Assessing The Perceived Effectiveness Of The Basic Communication Course: An Examination Of The Mass-Lecture Format Versus The Self-Contained Format, Timothy S. Todd, Lou Davidson Tillson, Stephen A. Cox, Barbara K. Malinauskas

Journal of the Association for Communication Administration

This article evaluates the most effective and efficient instructional format for basic communication courses. The results of the analysis lend support to the use of the mass-lecture/laboratory format. Although B. Erikson and D. Strommer indicated that feelings of anonymity, common in the large lecture class, diminished motivation, commitment and personal responsibility of the students, this study did not find similar results. Students indicated, across both instructional formats, comparable perceptions of student motivation, teacher nonverbal immediacy and teacher credibility. It appears that the mass-lecture/laboratory format was perceived by students as being as effective as self-contained sections of basic courses.

Towards Establishing A Yardstick For Measuring Student Research Article Productivity In Communication Studies, George W. Musambira Jan 2000

Towards Establishing A Yardstick For Measuring Student Research Article Productivity In Communication Studies, George W. Musambira

Journal of the Association for Communication Administration

This article aims to develop a yardstick for evaluating student research productivity based on the number of articles the students published in 24 journals in communication studies. While previous research has emphasized the importance of beginning to publish early in one's career, there is little empirical guidance regarding the standards of a good take off speed while one is still a student. Based on the averages provided in this study, students, their advisors, mentors and administrators who evaluate and hire students in academia can set and implement particular goals. Moreover, the article provides averages in both fractional points and frequency …

Scholarship Of Integration: Pushing, Blurring, And Connecting Theoretical Perspectives, Carole A. Barbato Jan 2000

Scholarship Of Integration: Pushing, Blurring, And Connecting Theoretical Perspectives, Carole A. Barbato

Journal of the Association for Communication Administration

This articles explores the function of the scholarship of integration to the field of communication studies. The scholarship of integration is defined as disciplined work that seeks to interpret, draw together, and bring new insight to bear on original research and interpretation, fitting one's own research or the research of others into larger intellectual patterns. Thus, the scholarship of integration attempts to synthesize what is known and interpret it in new ways by redefining it. It pushes the boundaries of the discipline by analyzing the effects of cutting edge research and its value to the discipline. It sometimes means blurring …

Transforming Scholarship Assessed Into Scholarship Accessed: Examining The Communication Implications Of A Boyer Report, Michael W. Shelton Jan 2000

Transforming Scholarship Assessed Into Scholarship Accessed: Examining The Communication Implications Of A Boyer Report, Michael W. Shelton

Journal of the Association for Communication Administration

This article presents an overview of the book Scholarship Assessed, by C. E. Glassick et al. The book is an Ernest Boyer project of the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching. The work is clearly designed to extend the original argument made in the book Scholarship Reconsidered, which builds the case for extending the boundaries of what counts as scholarly activity for the nation's faculty at colleges and universities. The text is divided into five chapters that follow Boyer's prologue. In addition, the text attempts to address the concerns raised by Boyer and to develop a general understanding of …

Relationships Among Central Administrators, Chairs, And Faculty: Academic Change Agents In Theory And Practice, Mark Hickson Iii Jan 2000

Relationships Among Central Administrators, Chairs, And Faculty: Academic Change Agents In Theory And Practice, Mark Hickson Iii

Journal of the Association for Communication Administration

This article explores the impact of the academic changes in the higher education in the U.S. on the relationship among administrators, chairs and faculty. Times have changed in higher education in the U.S. In the 1960s and 1970s higher education grew rapidly. State and local governments, as well as private donors, willingly and enthusiastically supported higher education. But the Vietnam conflict brought changes in that colleges were often considered the training grounds for protesters as well as escape routes from military conscription. Today it appears that most of heard are requests for raising money not at the president's level nor …

Information Utility, Reader Interest, Publication Rating And Student Newspaper Readership, Carolyn Lin Jan 2000

Information Utility, Reader Interest, Publication Rating And Student Newspaper Readership, Carolyn Lin

Journal of the Association for Communication Administration

This article investigates student motivations for reading a college student paper, including evaluations of performance and content preferences. The declining interest in newspaper readership, particularly among college-age readers has attracted concern among scholars in recent years. In a democracy founded on freedom of the press, fewer than 40% of adults today under the age of 30 subscribe to a paper. This suggests that time spent with newspapers continues to decline even as new media use accounts for the bulk of audience leisure.

Advertising And Culture: Variations On The Theme Of Individualism In Korean And American Magazine Advertising, Joyce M. Wolburg, Hoh Kim Jan 2000

Advertising And Culture: Variations On The Theme Of Individualism In Korean And American Magazine Advertising, Joyce M. Wolburg, Hoh Kim

College of Communication Faculty Research and Publications

Social scientists regard the U.S. and the Republic of Korea as countries with opposing cultural values. Given this contrast, the advertising of each culture is expected to differ. An examination of magazine advertising indicates that American ads strongly express the individualistic culture; however, the Korean ads not only express collectivistic ideas but individualistic ones as well. Although this phenomenon is not entirely surprising given the strength of Western influence, Korean individualistic messages are different from American individualistic messages. This suggests that expressions of individualism in ads blend with the elements of each culture to produce uniquely different messages ..
