Agreeing And Disagreeing With Assessments: Some Features Of Preferred/Dispreferred Turn Shaped, Anita Pomerantz

Communication Faculty Scholarship

Two type of organization are explicated: 1) the relationship between experiencing an event and assessing the event, and 2) the relationship of the status of a conversational action and the turn shape in which it is performed. Second assessments are performed when a recipient has had access to the referent assessed by a prior speaker. When the referent of an assessment is unrelated to the co-participants, respondents orient to agreeing as preferred. When the prior assessment is a self-deprecation, respondents orient to agreement as dispreferred. When the prior assessment is a compliment, recipients orient to multiple constraints.

Winona Campus Life was a weekly laboratory newspaper produced by the WSU Mass Communciation Department students and printed as a supplement to the Sunday Winona Daily News, which began in September 1983. The newspaper provided coverage of the four institutions of higher education in Winona: Winona State University, St. Mary's University, College of Saint Teresa, and Winona Area Vocational-Technical School. It was created to provide a place for Mass Communcation students to publish their articles and photographs with the idea of generating reader feedback, which is essential in journalism education.

Dissertations and Theses

Patient dissatisfaction with the physician/patient relationship and medical care is well documented in both the lay press and the medical literature. This problem appears to stem from communication between physician and patient and is drawing increased attention from the communication discipline. Research conducted in interpersonal communication satisfaction theory provides a basis for this study of patient satisfaction with physician/patient communication and its relationship to the perceived quality of medical care.

This paper reports two sets of interviews with a total of 108 respondents on the topic of physician/patient communication which resulted in the identification of nine salient issues which appeared …

Similarity/Dissimilarity Of Couples Communication Competence In Relationship To Their Marital Satisfaction, Thomas Kenne Worthen

Research has shown that similar communicator styles leads to effective communication, and effective communication leads to relationship satisfaction. Using an extension of balance theory, this study analyzed the relationship between spouses similar/dissimilar communication competence ratings and their marital satisfaction.

Subjects consisted of 44 married couples from a midwestern university and the surrounding area. The Communication Adaptability Scale was used to measure communication competence. The Marital Adjustment Test was used to measure marital satisfaction. Using a t-test no significance was found.

The Effects Of Dogmatism, Rhetorical Sensitivity, And Attitude Valence On Selected Speech Ratings, Chris B. Geyerman

Masters Theses

This study empirically examined the demand characteristic construct and the information processing construct of the rating error paradigm. The findings of this study indicated that the position advocated by the speaker with respect to the attitude valence of the raters significantly influenced the speech evaluation process. This study provides support for the demand characteristic construct and the information processing construct of rating error theory. Implications in terms of pedagogy, theory, and future research are discussed.

The Effects Of Race On The Attitudes Of Children Toward Television Advertising, Kathleen S. Wallis

Theses

The purpose of this study was to determine if there are any significant differences in the attitudes of black as compared to white children toward television advertising.

Several researchers have previously concluded that the race of a child is a contributing factor to his or her attitude toward television advertising. However, these researchers compared black and white children in extremely different environments and from extremely different backgrounds. This study attempted to compare the attitudes of black and white children toward television advertising when those children live in similar environments, attend the same school, and are from similar socio-economic backgrounds.

This article reports a salary survey of communication arts and sciences programs during the 1982 to 1983 academic year. It examines faculty salary ranges, beginning assistant professor salaries, and terminal degree expectations across areas such as broadcasting, mass communication, communication and rhetoric, speech pathology and audiology, and theatre. The article compares salaries by faculty rank, institutional type, institutional size, and degree programs offered. It also situates communication faculty salaries in relation to broader higher education salary patterns and earlier salary information in the discipline.
