Be Careful What You Ask For: How Inquiry Strategy Influences Readiness Mode, Leslie E. Serkera, Roxanne Zolin, J. Goosby Smith

Organization Management Journal

Much has been written about affecting change in the workplace, including how to help employees prepare for the process. However, little is known about how participation influences employees’ emotions and attitudes at the start of an intervention. By qualitatively analyzing conversations that were triggered by an organizational change effort, we explored how different inquiry strategies influence readiness for change. We examined four inquiry strategies by combining strength or deficit frames with individual or organizational focus. Distinctive conversational patterns emerged within each strategy, which we believe influence peoples’ change readiness. In this article we present four readiness modes to describe these …

The Great Leader Project, James P. Burton Jul 2009

The Great Leader Project, James P. Burton

Organization Management Journal

This paper examines a project that has been incorporated into an undergraduate Leadership and Decision Making class. The project, the Great Leader Project, focuses student attention on the fact that effective leadership is not only a function of the specific traits and behaviors of a leader, but also a function of the characteristics of the followers and the leader’s context. In this project, a leader is randomly assigned to a group of students who are charged with analyzing the leader (both in a written report and an oral debate) using the concepts discussed in class. At the end of the …

Creativity Forums: Learning From The Lives Of Extraordinary Leaders, Joan V. Gallos

Organization Management Journal

This paper proposes a tested design for a Creativity Forum project underpinned by research findings that show studying extraordinary lives enables ordinary people to better embrace their own creative talents. The paper begins with background on the links between creativity and contemporary leadership. It then describes the project design, explores creative variations, discusses student learning, and ends with instructor caveats and advocacy for the development of a leadership pedagogy of imagination.

Reinventing The Future: Adding Design Science To The Repertoire Of Organization And Management Studies, Joan Ernest Van Aken, Georges Romme Mar 2009

Reinventing The Future: Adding Design Science To The Repertoire Of Organization And Management Studies, Joan Ernest Van Aken, Georges Romme

Organization Management Journal

Mainstream research on organization and management is largely modeled after the natural sciences and the humanities. It aims at understanding social systems and, as such, has produced a vast knowledge base. However, this knowledge base has been criticized as fragmented and lacking relevance for practice. Two recent developments have produced the possibility of reinventing the future of organization and management studies: the increasing interest in design science research and in evidence-based management. First, we discuss how the actor perspective and solution-orientation of design science research can lead to more relevant research output. Second, we explore how the use of this …

Employee Empowerment, Action Research And Organizational Change: A Case Study, Victor Wooddell Mar 2009

Employee Empowerment, Action Research And Organizational Change: A Case Study, Victor Wooddell

Organization Management Journal

This article summarizes the results of a project designed and implemented by a cross-sectional design team of employees of a local government agency. We compare the project design to criteria associated with employee empowerment programs and action research models. Finally, we compare the outcomes of the project with important components of employee empowerment. The purpose of this article is to highlight how one such project was implemented in a field setting, and review what was learned by the participants regarding how management and employees can work more effectively together on issues of strategic importance to the organization. Both the process …

Aquarius Advertising Revisited: A Case Becomes An Experience, Kristen Backhaus Mar 2009

Aquarius Advertising Revisited: A Case Becomes An Experience, Kristen Backhaus

Organization Management Journal

This experiential exercise is based on a traditional organization theory case related to structural contingency theory. The exercise provides a means by which students can play the role of advertising agency professionals and their clients. The objectives of the exercise are to demonstrate structural contingency theory; to illustrate the relationship between contextual factors in an organization’s environment and its internal organization design; to demonstrate the effects of structural deficiency on communication and project completion in a creative organization; and to demonstrate the need for horizontal linkages for effective project completion. The exercise is appropriate for both undergraduate and graduate students.

Music As A Mirror: The ‘‘Choosing My Personal Theme Song’’ Exercise, Nathan S. Hartman, Thomas A. Conklin Mar 2009

Music As A Mirror: The ‘‘Choosing My Personal Theme Song’’ Exercise, Nathan S. Hartman, Thomas A. Conklin

Organization Management Journal

When asked to describe their strengths people rarely refer to their natural knowledge, skills, abilities, and talents. From this we may assume that many are unaware of their individual strengths or at the very least take them for granted. Music lyrics are particularly salient symbols available in the minds of students and can be powerful tools for learning more about themselves and others. This knowledge is valuable as they continue in their own personal evolution as they discern greater distinctions between themselves and the world around them. The interactive exercise presented here uses music to help students look in the …

Demonstrating The Challenges Of Behaving With Emotional Intelligence In A Team Setting: An On-Line/On-Ground Experiential Exercise, William P. Ferris Mar 2009

Demonstrating The Challenges Of Behaving With Emotional Intelligence In A Team Setting: An On-Line/On-Ground Experiential Exercise, William P. Ferris

Organization Management Journal

The idea of this new exercise is to involve two project team participants in an interpersonal conflict in front of a classroom of learner/observers and then to debrief the entire experience in terms of emotional intelligence (EI) concepts in a way that clarifies these concepts experientially. It is preceded by EI readings and may be followed by extended on-line discussions and a variety of different papers and/or homework assignments. It can be used in traditional, blended learning (BL), or on-line courses or training classrooms. Originally developed to involve on-ground (face-to-face) and on-line students from the same course in the same …

Breaking The Ice With A Gutted Rooster: Reflections On A Messy Day One, Dave O'Connell Dec 2008

Breaking The Ice With A Gutted Rooster: Reflections On A Messy Day One, Dave O'Connell

Organization Management Journal

Based on an experience in an MBA Human Resource Management classroom, this paper traces the process of my reflection on an icebreaker discussion of ‘‘best’’ and ‘‘worst’’ student jobs. I indicate how I developed second thoughts about the way in which I handled the discussion, concerned that making light of messy jobs might encourage the class of future managers to do the same. The journey includes the input of a fellow colleague who helped spur me to articulate more clearly – for myself and for my students – that which I am willing to profess as a management professor. In …

An Assurance Of Learning Success Model: Toward Closing The Feedback Loop, Bonita L. Betters-Reed, Mindell Reiss Nitkins, Susan D. Sampson

Organization Management Journal

This paper provides a systemic approach to building and sustaining a solid assurance of learning program using the framework of Kotter’s (1995) Strategic Model for Transforming Organizations. A comprehensive model for launching and sustaining a systemic approach to program review that ‘‘closes the loop’’ is shared step by step. Particular attention is paid to the organizational behaviors and processes that accompany each step, and to sharing important lessons that were learned. A review of the assessment literature in higher education and recent Advancement of Collegiate Schools of Business International (AACSB) contributions to this body of knowledge identifies a critical gap …

Ibm And Germany 1922–1941, Donald W. Mccormick, James C. Spee Dec 2008

Ibm And Germany 1922–1941, Donald W. Mccormick, James C. Spee

Organization Management Journal

In 1941, one of IBM’s most profitable customers was the German government. Germany leased IBM’s punch card tabulation machines (ancestors of the computer), and used them in its war against France, the United Kingdom and others. They were also used to conduct the census, to keep track of Jews and other ‘‘undesirables’’, and to operate the concentration camps. In 1937, Hitler awarded Watson a medal. By 1940, however, US public opinion had turned against Germany and he returned the medal. Outraged, German IBM executives and high-ranking Nazis threatened IBM’s control over its subsidiary. Although its activities were legal under US …

Team On Teams: A Collaborative Inquiry, Jennifer Sa Leigh, Joy E. Beatty, Paul S. Szwed Dec 2008

Team On Teams: A Collaborative Inquiry, Jennifer Sa Leigh, Joy E. Beatty, Paul S. Szwed

Organization Management Journal

Over the course of an academic year, we collaborated to adopt a new instructional design for teams in our classes. We recount the story of our collaboration, outlining our process of inquiry, reflection, and support. Our simple search for better techniques shifted as our colleagues helped us reveal hidden assumptions about our roles as teachers. Our critical reflection allowed us to increase our self-awareness, specifically considering the following: how power influences our classroom interactions, how we contribute to and reinforce elements of the system that are not in our best interest, and the evolving stages of our own development as …

Using An Ethnostatistical Analysis To Interpret Data: The Nike Case, Nancy E. Landrum, David M. Boje Sep 2008

Using An Ethnostatistical Analysis To Interpret Data: The Nike Case, Nancy E. Landrum, David M. Boje

Organization Management Journal

This study reviews a 1997 study released by Nike to resolve wage controversies in subcontracted Asian factories. An ethnostatistical analysis is provided to show how the application of the three levels of ethnostatistics can help us understand differing interpretations of the same data. The current analysis is evidence of the way in which context, assumptions and methodology, and rhetoric and language can influence the outcome of quantitative studies. The current study is an important methodological note because academic researchers are being called to answer important questions regarding the global operations of transnational corporations. This raises the question of our role …
