Perceptions And Content Of Traditional And Online News: An Analysis Of Bias In Indian Media, Sangya Tyagi
Perceptions And Content Of Traditional And Online News: An Analysis Of Bias In Indian Media, Sangya Tyagi
Communication Theses - Archive
The primary objective of this study was to compare and analyse two different points of view on media polarization: one, from the public’s perspective through a survey (analysis of their perceptions on news received from their preferred news sources) and the other, analysis of media published by the media content providers. Another research contribution of this study was that it included an analysis of the mode of media consumption, i.e., how the news was consumed--via traditional media or through online media. This project ties in a variety of aspects in the field of communication -- media, mode of news consumption, …

Big Data And Journalism: How American Journalism Is Adopting The Use Of Big Data, Andrew M. Clark, Julián Rodríguez
Communication Faculty Publications - Archive
This research uses in-depth interviews with three data journalists from the Houston Chronicle and the New York Times in the United States to describe the role of data journalists, and to illustrate how and why they use big data in their stories. Data journalists possess a unique set of skills, including the ability to find and gather data and use that data to tell a compelling written story in a visually coherent way. Results from our interviews and research show as newspapers move to a digital format, the role of data journalists is becoming more essential, as are laws like …
The Balancing Act Is Magnified: U.S. Mothers’ Struggles Amidst A Pandemic, Grace Ellen Brannon, Molly Wiant Cummins
The Balancing Act Is Magnified: U.S. Mothers’ Struggles Amidst A Pandemic, Grace Ellen Brannon, Molly Wiant Cummins
Communication Faculty Publications - Archive
Successes are often noticed in reflection after an event; struggles are felt in the moment. When COVID-19 was recognized as a public health emergency in the United States (US), many mothers felt their struggles more acutely. Much of 2020 feels like a pressure cooker for mothers, where the steam valve does not fully relieve the mounting pressure they felt because of COVID-19. Most families are experiencing additional stress due to COVID-19, but in heterosexual couples, that work disproportionately falls to women, as they are spending, on average, fifteen hours more per week on education and household tasks (Cohen and Hsu). …
Family Communicative Environment’S Effects On Young Adults’ Social Norms About Limiting Alcohol: Examining The Mediating Effects Of Implicit Pri, Grace Ellen Brannon
Family Communicative Environment’S Effects On Young Adults’ Social Norms About Limiting Alcohol: Examining The Mediating Effects Of Implicit Pri, Grace Ellen Brannon
Communication Faculty Publications - Archive
Alcohol usage among young adults remains a prominent public health concern. Communicating with family members about alcohol can positively influence young adults’ perceptions of social norms, yet the stigmatized nature of alcohol-related conversations in the family create a barrier to occurrence of these conversations. This study examines how young adults’ familial communication patterns impact their descriptive and injunctive social norms about alcohol, using Communication Privacy Management Theory as the theoretical framework. Specifically, this study seeks to understand how conversation orientation, conformity orientation, warm conformity orientation, and cold conformity orientation predicts two sets of social norms (descriptive and injunctive), and to …
New Challenges In Social Media Marketing: Exploring The Interaction Effects Of Age And Message Format On Cognitive, Affective, And Behavioral Outcomes, Daniela Chavez Garcia
New Challenges In Social Media Marketing: Exploring The Interaction Effects Of Age And Message Format On Cognitive, Affective, And Behavioral Outcomes, Daniela Chavez Garcia
Communication Theses - Archive
The prevalence of social media and their increasingly diverse user demographics have started to pose new challenges to marketing communication researchers and professionals. Guided by the media richness theory (MRT), this study investigates the main effects of age and three message formats (i.e., text, image, and video) on social media and their interaction effects on attention capturing, positive emotions, product liking, information seeking, and buying intent. The results of an online experiment (N = 240) showed there was a significant main effect of age on different positive emotions (i.e., excited, controlling, and influential), and a significant main effect of format …
Miracles And Home Births: The Importance Of Media Representations Of Birth, Molly Wiant Cummins
Miracles And Home Births: The Importance Of Media Representations Of Birth, Molly Wiant Cummins
Communication Faculty Publications - Archive
Since most women do not experience birth firsthand before giving birth themselves, many U.S. American birthing women draw knowledge from media representations for understanding what to expect during delivery. Most media representations of birth uphold a medical model, presenting many women with limited options for birth and reducing the agency available to women in their healthcare choices. Lack of choice and agency play into some of the issues surrounding the high rate of maternal mortality in the U.S., compared to other developed nations. This paper analyzes “The Miracle of Birth” scene from Crazy Ex-Girlfriend and Darci’s home birth on Jane …
Communicating Death To Potential Military Recruits: A Terror Management Theory Approach, Amanda M. Augustine
Communicating Death To Potential Military Recruits: A Terror Management Theory Approach, Amanda M. Augustine
Communication Theses - Archive
Efforts to encourage more citizens to join the military is a prominent duty within a military organization. In order to maintain force strength, military recruiters and marketing teams need to persuade the population to join. This study used Terror Management Theory (TMT) and the relationship between the fear of mortality and its effect on motivation toward volunteering for military service in the United States. TMT is a theory that explains how the human psyche combats the fear of mortality, and this study sought to answer how mortality salience affects an individual’s motivation to join the military. TMT’s explanation of defense …
Case Study Analysis Of Shared Visual Arguments And Propaganda Techniques Of Russian Propaganda Posters And Russian Internet Memes, Cindy D. Vasquez
Case Study Analysis Of Shared Visual Arguments And Propaganda Techniques Of Russian Propaganda Posters And Russian Internet Memes, Cindy D. Vasquez
Communication Theses - Archive
Rhetoric, the study of argument using logic, has been studied for centuries. However, there is some disagreement among scholars on whether or not argumentation can be applied to visual imagery. Images are noted to have more emotional appeal than text does. Visual propaganda was mass produced in the form of propaganda posters, most popularly in the early 20th century. In more recent times, the sharing of images has moved to social media, popularly through memes. This paper analyzes two Soviet propaganda posters produced by one Soviet publishing house, Litizdat, and two memes created by the Russian organization the Internet Research …
Condom Communication In Young Adults’ Romantic Relationships: Examining Privacy’S Effects On Attitudes, Norms, Self-Efficacy, And Barriers, Grace Ellen Brannon
Condom Communication In Young Adults’ Romantic Relationships: Examining Privacy’S Effects On Attitudes, Norms, Self-Efficacy, And Barriers, Grace Ellen Brannon
Communication Faculty Publications - Archive
Condoms are the most recommended method of preventing sexually transmitted infections (STIs), yet they are underutilized. Young adults are at substantially higher risk for contracting an STI than other populations, but do not perceive many sexual behaviors as risky. Research has documented the importance of individuals communicating about STIs and condom usage with romantic partners; unfortunately, these conversations do not occur as they should. This study investigates how young adults in romantic relationships manage privacy processes related to condom communication, using Communication Privacy Management as the theoretical lens. This study seeks to better understand how attitudes, norms, and self-efficacy for …

Hyphenated Americans: Christian Arab-Americans’ Identity Struggle, Amanda Haddad Jobgen
Communication Theses - Archive
The topic of this thesis is the understudied minority of Christian Arab-Americans (CAAs), and this research addresses the issues CAAs face in the United States with special attention to the factors that influence their cultural identity. The thesis provides a historical background on how Christian Arabs came to the United States and explains the factors that influence their identity struggle. The theoretical framework of my research is based on Berry’s (1997) acculturation model. Ten participants were interviewed for this study, and a thematic analysis was conducted in order to determine the extent to which religiosity and perceived discrimination affects/influences the …
The Rise Of Twitter In Presidential Communication: An Examination Of The Relationship Between President Trump's Twitter Feed And The Media Coverage Of His First 100 Days, Zedan Xu
Communication Theses - Archive
The purpose of this study is to examine the relationship between Donald Trump’s Twitter feed and the media coverage of Trump’s agenda expressed in his tweets during the “honeymoon period.” From the theoretical perspective of agenda setting theory, this research empirically explores the salience issues present in Trump’s Twitter postings and compare them to the media agenda. Descriptive statistics of Trump’s tweets and the coverage of his tweets from the New York Times, the Washington Post, and the Wall Street Journal show that nearly half of Trump’s Twitter posts are covered in the news media, indicating that Trump’s Twitter feed …
Framing Leadership Rhetoric: Exploring Gender (In) Equality In Corporate Training Material, Anna Elizabeth Prieto
Framing Leadership Rhetoric: Exploring Gender (In) Equality In Corporate Training Material, Anna Elizabeth Prieto
Communication Theses - Archive
This study explores gender equality in the workplace using both quantitative and qualitative methods. Two sets of data were analyzed: leadership training and development materials and in-depth interviews. This two-fold method allowed for a holistic approach to analyzing data and made it possible to compare findings from the textual analysis with insights gained from the interviews. This study revealed a lack of attention being devoted to developing and promoting leadership training materials and experiences that acknowledge gender differences and encourage gender equality. It was determined that overall, gender associated rhetoric used in the course titles and descriptions made up barely …
News Narratives About The Hpv Vaccine For Adolescent Males, Katherine E. Bennett
News Narratives About The Hpv Vaccine For Adolescent Males, Katherine E. Bennett
Communication Theses - Archive
The goal of this research was to examine portrayals of gender roles and expectations related to the human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine for men and boys in U.S. newspapers within the theoretical framework of feminist theory, feminist media theory, hegemonic masculinity, and heteronormativity. Since the HPV vaccine was approved for girls in women in 2006, research has been conducted examining media portrayals of the HPV vaccine for girls and women, but little has been written about how the news has treated the subject for men and boys. This research examined print newspaper articles between 2011, when the U.S. Advisory Council on …
The Right Stuff? Selective Exposure And Political Misinformation On Facebook, Amanda Jordan
The Right Stuff? Selective Exposure And Political Misinformation On Facebook, Amanda Jordan
Communication Theses - Archive
For a democracy to function optimally, its citizens must arrive at election booths armed with factual and complete information. If the voting public is equipped with misinformation, it is just as detrimental as if they are uninformed. Misinformation can be caused and exacerbated by a variety of causes but as online selective exposure increases along with political polarization, the possibility that individuals who gather news on their favorite Facebook platforms will be deceived by political misinformation increases. This false news has the ability to cause more and more voters to formulate beliefs and opinions based on false information. Expanding on …

Social Media: The Impact Of Imagery And Engagement In Athletic Social Media, Michael W. Eldridge
Communication Theses - Archive
As the athletic communication field enhances its practices on social media in order to have the highest reach, the impact of visual content and its role in increasing social media engagement cannot be overstated. This study explores social media patterns, specifically the use of visual content within professional sports, and how the role of semiotics influences the viewer. As social media moves forward in athletics, the practice of two-way communication has become vital. This study of social media across the NFL provides insight on specific content that engages sports fans. Findings suggest both the type of content and the timing …

Towards Epistolary Dialogue, Sandra L. Pensoneau-Conway, Molly Wiant Cummins
Communication Faculty Publications - Archive
In this essay, we investigate the potential of letters as a communicative genre that embodies dialogue, and thus, disrupts power relations. To do so, we first outline a theoretical framework that draws upon feminist and critical communication pedagogies. We specifically focus on two scholars—Nel Noddings and Paulo Freire—for the ways they utilize dialogue in developing their pedagogical positions. We then explain our epistolary method of letter writing, which stood as the central component of a semester-long project between us as student and teacher. We use excerpts from our letters to analyze the epistolary form as conducive to dialogic engagement—what we …
The Butterfly Effect Of Deceptive Science: How Media Influence May Have Spread The Illusory Link Between Vaccines And Autism, Kami M. Vinton
The Butterfly Effect Of Deceptive Science: How Media Influence May Have Spread The Illusory Link Between Vaccines And Autism, Kami M. Vinton
Communication Theses - Archive
Delaying or refusing childhood vaccinations can increase a community’s risk of vaccine-preventable diseases. Agenda setting theory demonstrates that media can influence people's attitudes and opinions. One study in 1998 asserted that a vaccine/autism link existed, giving birth to one of the longest held myths in modern medicine. Shortly after its publication, the study was thoroughly discredited, and hundreds of subsequent studies have failed to find any link. Many parents who refuse vaccinations remain unconvinced by traditional science and favor anecdotal, pseudo-scientific accounts of the cause of and treatments for autism. Given the recent resurgence of once-eradicated vaccine-preventable diseases, it is …
A Virtual Foot In The Door: How Avatar Similarity Impacts Group Identity In Computer-Mediated Communication, Shannon Zenner
A Virtual Foot In The Door: How Avatar Similarity Impacts Group Identity In Computer-Mediated Communication, Shannon Zenner
Communication Theses - Archive
Communication researchers continue to explore the promise and the impact of the Internet and computer-mediated communication. While much research has shown that the effects have been distancing, polarizing and negative others point to a more connected global world. In this study we attempt to look for the initial promise of the Internet. By manipulating anonymity, avatars and types of similarity in a virtual computer-mediated scenario we uncover a pathway to improve group identity, trust and social attraction. These concepts are supported by social identity theories and by the social identity model of deindividuation effects (SIDE). A 2x3 factorial experimental design …
Reactions Of The Transgender Community Regarding Media Representation, Chani Wellborn
Reactions Of The Transgender Community Regarding Media Representation, Chani Wellborn
Communication Theses - Archive
Lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) issues have increasingly been focused on in society and also in communication media research. However, academic studies focusing on transgender reactions to recent representation developments of their community in the media world have not been done. The researcher conducted one-on-one interviews with those identifying as male to female (MtF) transgender in order to study their reactions to media coverage of the transgender community. Cultural studies and communication theories, as well as transgender and trans-identity theories provided a theoretical structure and basis for developing the study and interview questions. Qualitative methodology using an inductive grounded …

This study used 160 wheelchair basketball and 160 able bodied basketball articles from student news sources to conduct content and textual analyses. Framing theory and the transactional model were used to explore these relationships through qualitative and quantitative methodologies. The study compared the nature of the wheelchair basketball and able bodied basketball articles and photographs. By adapting previous methods of analysis, I examined metaphor use, article genre, direct quotations, and images. Findings from the present study contributed insight to the body of disability sport media research by providing an exploratory look into the collegiate wheelchair basketball student media coverage and …

The American Forces Network (AFN) began during World War II to boost the morale of troops serving overseas, and to that end, military broadcasters at AFN Okinawa have served as the link to home for troops stationed on the island since 1945. This research captures a pivotal time in the history of broadcasting through the memories of military veterans, their families, and the Okinawan people. Interviews with listeners reveal they tuned in for the music, friendly voices, timely weather reports, and American perspective. Military veterans describe the experience of broadcasting as exciting and uniquely challenging, while government reports and archives …

Terrorism Risk In Mexico And The Impact On Tourism Discourse, Gabriela M. Granado
Communication Theses - Archive
This study examined how news about drug-related terrorism and major events in the war on drugs changed tourists' discourse on whether or not to visit Mexico. An examination of hundreds of online tourist discussions were used to determine how people assess an increased travel risk. The results of this study could assist communication and marketing professionals in the tourism and hospitality industry, specifically Mexico, in understanding the feelings and views potential customers have when considering travel to destinations that might be considered riskier than other destinations.

This study focuses on how, if at all, NBA organizations are creating dialogue with their publics through the use of the social networking site Twitter. With the use of Kent and Taylor's dialogic approach to public relations, three NBA organizations Twitter accounts were observed using a thematic analysis to develop themes within their tweets and replies. I explore themes among the organizations Twitter content that are related to the five tenets of dialogism created by Kent and Taylor. By understanding how the NBA organizations are communicating with their publics we can understand if they are creating a sustainable organization-public relationship …
I Listen To You Every Day: Parasocial Relationships And Self-Disclosure In Christian Radio, Michael E. Agee
I Listen To You Every Day: Parasocial Relationships And Self-Disclosure In Christian Radio, Michael E. Agee
Communication Theses - Archive
Involvement with characters is an important part of our media rich environment. Researchers have examined different forms of character involvement, most often in television. Though unique because of its focus on the relationship between a media persona and viewers and listeners, researchers have paid scant attention to the effects of parasocial interaction (PSI) and relationships (PSR) that form between radio station announcers and their listeners. This case study explores parasocial relationships between listeners and announcers at a non-commercial Christian music station, the role of personal self-disclosure by announcers on the air, and whether it can affect real life behavior as …
Supporting People With Diabetes: The Roles Of Health Literacy And Communication Of Support, Grace Ellen Brannon
Supporting People With Diabetes: The Roles Of Health Literacy And Communication Of Support, Grace Ellen Brannon
Communication Theses - Archive
In the U.S., the number of people with diabetes is estimated to surpass 330 million by 2030. Previous research has focused on the direct link between communication and a person's overall health. Strong patient-provider interaction, medical education through community events and outreach, and stable support systems within family and friends can improve a person's awareness which leads to an increased health literacy level and better well-being. The health literacy level of an individual has been shown to have a direct impact on a person's overall health. Social support and corresponding communication have also been shown as vital. This study used …
The Impact Of Online Non-Partisan Videos On Self-Reported Intention To Vote, Milad Minooie
The Impact Of Online Non-Partisan Videos On Self-Reported Intention To Vote, Milad Minooie
Communication Theses - Archive
Previous studies have concluded that Web-based get out the vote (GOTV) messages do not impact voting behavior. However, the primary shortcoming of these studies has been the form of GOTV media studied, focusing on lean, text-based internet media, analogous to direct mail. With the advent of Web 2.0, where users are both consumers and generators of content, further research into internet-based GOTV efforts is warranted. To study the effects of richer Internet media, two sets of videos were created, utilizing proximity and peripheral elaboration of messages to positively stimulate voting engagement and intent. Male and female presenters from the same …
An Exploration Of Social Media's Influence In Parasocial Relationships Between Sports Fans And Sports Figures, Melinda Annette Valero
An Exploration Of Social Media's Influence In Parasocial Relationships Between Sports Fans And Sports Figures, Melinda Annette Valero
Communication Theses - Archive
This study used sixteen in-depth interviews with sports fans who claimed to have a favorite sports figure in order to explore parasocial relationships. Parasocial interaction theory was the framework used to explore these relationships through qualitative work. The study examined the development and maintenance of the relationship through social media, development and maintenance through media other than social media, and the possible causes of a parasocial breakup between a sports fan and a sports figure. By applying Owen's Thematic Analysis, themes were found in response to research questions regarding the development and maintenance of parasocial relationships and parasocial breakups. Findings …

Negotiating Identity Creation Through Personal Narrative In A Christian Recovery Group, James N. Dunning
Communication Theses - Archive
Alcohol and substance abuse affects 23 million Americans each year and many seek treatment through mutual help groups and rehabilitation centers. Similar to Alcoholics Anonymous (AA), Celebrate Recovery (CR) is a mutual help recovery group with an emphasis on Christian identity. This study builds on previous research surrounding AA and examines how group members within CR utilize personal narrative to establish and cultivate their individual identity. Historically, Twelve Step programs such as AA and CR enable individuals to foster a new identity as members admit wrongdoings and trust in their higher power to repair their character flaws. Group members take …

Building upon the established foundation of research concerning the systemic marginalization of Black men in traditionally White educational spaces, this essay positions Black male educational counterstories at the center of critical communication inquiry. To do so, critical race theory (CRT) and critical communication pedagogy (CCP) are productively woven together to draw rich insights from 4 focus groups with Black male students, 1 focus group with Black male faculty and students, and 11 interviews with Black male faculty. Their reflections reveal how Black misandric ideology manifests in traditionally White educational spaces and demand that we pay close attention to what Black …
Cmc V/S Ftfc- Media Effect On Millennials' Self-Disclosure Behavior, Vidisha Vijaykumar Bhopatkar
Cmc V/S Ftfc- Media Effect On Millennials' Self-Disclosure Behavior, Vidisha Vijaykumar Bhopatkar
Communication Theses - Archive
This study examines the effect that computer-mediated communication (CMC) and face-to-face communication (FTFC) have on Millennials' communication behaviors. The study specifically focuses on the self-disclosure aspect and attempts to analyze the possible effects that CMC and FTF communication may have on Millennials' self-disclosure behaviors. The methodology included a pre-test survey, followed by an experiment, and a post-test survey. Quantitative data analysis showed that for self-disclosure, Millennials do not exclusively consider one medium suitable over another. For them, the suitability of a medium is dependent on the task for which the medium is used.
