From Patriarchal Stereotypes To Matriarchal Pleasures Of Hybridity: Representation Of A Muslim Family In Berlin, Rahime Özgün Kehya Dr
Journal of Religion & Film
Sinan Çetin’s blockbuster Berlin in Berlin (1993) is a Turkish-German co-production. In contrast to certain representational tendencies with German orientalism or Turkish occidentalism, it deconstructs the intersectional structures of migration, religion, and gender. The portrayal of religion in films about Turkish-German labour migration is a kind of cultural narcissism often projected into national cinema by denigrating the faith of the other and glorifying one’s own religion. However, perspectives at such intersections are critical and require sensitivity in filmmaking, as films can create prejudice or help build peaceful relationships around these sensitive issues. The paper employs discourse analysis in linking Derrida’s …

Aït Khbach Nomads And A Thousand Plateaus: An Investigation Into The Challenges Of Nomadism Using Concepts From Deleuze And Guattari, Ryder Hobbs
Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection
The Aït Khbach nomads of Drâa-Tafilalet Region in Morocco face several challenges to their lifestyle. Namely, their obstacles relate directly to desertification and the state. Through interviews with the Aït Khbach, this paper seeks to present their narratives. Additionally, this paper grapples with the metaphysics of nomadism and the groundwork of its praxis. In their work, A Thousand Plateaus, Gilles Deleuze and Felix Guattari construct concepts, such as smooth space, the state apparatus, and nomadism, which can be utilized pragmatically to complement and explore the narratives of Aït Khbach nomads.

Climate Change Journalism In Pakistan: Ethical Deliberations, Muhammad Ittefaq, Shafiq Ahmad Kamboh, Ayesha Ashfaq
School of Communication Studies - Faculty Scholarship
In the 21st century, research on climate journalism has received exponential growth globally. However, the media’s ethical role in covering climate change has not sufficiently been explored enough. In this chapter, we provide a broad overview of climate change journalism in Pakistan, the role of stakeholders that are directly involved in this crisis, and further highlighted the need to follow the UNESCO-led ethical principles and deliberations by the local climate journalism. We conclude that though a great deal of attention has been paid by the local scholars and scientists to highlight different dimensions of climate emergency, however, the findings of …

Re-Examining, Re-Empowering: The Effect Of Contextualizing Testimonial Theatre On Spect-Actors, Felicia Owusu-Ansah
Pedagogy and Theatre of the Oppressed Journal
To be empowered, freed from rejection, silence and trauma, one may have no choice but to speak up. But how does the silenced speak in the presence of the oppressor? At this point, theatre (of testimony) became the most useful tool to break the silence among irregular returnees in Akuma, Ghana. This qualitative study article reports on the healing and empowering effects of Testimonial Theatre on spect-actors during its use for dissemination of research findings to the researched community. It aims to show how Testimonial Theatre’s effects of compassion and empathy led to the resilience of human essence, breaking silence, …

Relações Entre Teatro E Política No Trabalho Teatral De Boal No Pós-1964: A Coletivização Do Fazer Artistico Como Expressão Autoconsciente Da Produção Estética, Patricia Freitas
Pedagogy and Theatre of the Oppressed Journal
Relationships Between Theatre And Politics In Boal’S Post-1964 Theatrical Work: The Collectivization Of Artmaking As A Self-Conscious Expression Of Aesthetic Production, Patricia Freitas
Pedagogy and Theatre of the Oppressed Journal
This essay aims to bring a historical perspective to the theatrical work carried out by Augusto Boal after the establishment of the military dictatorship in Brazil in 1964. The historical trauma generated by the coup re-dimensioned the socially engaged theatrical practice in the country. In Boal's case, it created important contradictions between his theory and practice. Along these lines, this study verified that the reflection proposed by Boal on the Brazilian scene had a broader background and was embedded in a movement of cultural criticism, with the aim of creating an aesthetic and political program of action.
O Mecanismo Da Empatia No Teatro Fórum, Ali Mansouri
O Mecanismo Da Empatia No Teatro Fórum, Ali Mansouri
Pedagogy and Theatre of the Oppressed Journal
The Mechanism Of Empathy In Forum Theater, Ali Mansouri
The Mechanism Of Empathy In Forum Theater, Ali Mansouri
Pedagogy and Theatre of the Oppressed Journal
Even though the concept of “Empathy” was mentioned in the earliest texts about performance, there has always been a dispute among theatre theorists in different eras regarding its impact on the audience. Although some have considered empathy as the basis of the theatre, others viewed it as a dangerous ground that can result in inappropriate and unhealthy feelings in the audience. Recent findings of neuroscientists have revealed that empathy (with both real people and fictional characters) is inevitable for human beings, and its unconscious mechanism exists in every mentally healthy person. I believe that this inherent ability can allow us …

Usando O Teatro Aplicado Para A Cura Coletiva E O Tratamento Do Luto Na Sala De Aula, Sarah Fahmy
Pedagogy and Theatre of the Oppressed Journal

Using Applied Theatre For Collective Healing And Grief Processing In The Classroom, Sarah Fahmy
Pedagogy and Theatre of the Oppressed Journal
At times when our mental health is equally as strained as our students, applied theatre may ground and guide us to support us turn our collective trauma into action and enable students to envision their individual and collective healing. In this article, I reflect on the process of devising C(U)VID-19: Reflections from Students of the Pandemic, a 50-minute, multi-disciplinary virtual performance, conceived and produced in under two weeks by the students in my theatre for non-majors class in 2021. I share examples of how applied theatre enabled students to lead with empathy and develop friendships while authoring their own …

This is a short article introducing the Wildcard Workbook, and the journey we took to translate our understanding of the core ethics of Theatre of the Oppressed into a resource for all kinds of facilitators. In our years of practice, we wished for a book we couldn’t yet find: a truly accessible, visual, and interactive guide that could prepare us to work with a community in real-time. That was the spark for the book, and the values of the project grew from there. In this essay, we reflect on our collaboration process, and on the ways this book may be …

This review was originally written as a review exercise for the Latin American Theater course, offered by the Performing Arts College at Paulista University (UNESP) in 2022, and taught by professors Patricia Freitas and Paula Autran. Based on some topics presented in class, the author unravels the Brazilian play Ponto de Fuga in its dramaturgy and creation process, while discussing the successive erasure of the history and memory of colonized peoples, more specifically in Latin America. It also stirs up reflections on the self-identification of Brazilians as Latinos. The review aims to bring into debate the relations of oppression and …

Police Officers’ Perspectives On The Death Of George Floyd By Minneapolis Police Officers: A Descriptive Study, Janet Henderson
Police Officers’ Perspectives On The Death Of George Floyd By Minneapolis Police Officers: A Descriptive Study, Janet Henderson
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
On May 25, 2020, four Minneapolis police officers reported to the location where an African American man had been accused of trying to use a counterfeit $20 bill in a convenience store. After being taken outside of the store, the man, George Floyd, was eventually placed in the back of a police patrol car, after he was handcuffed. Saying he was claustrophobic and resisting arrest, Mr. Floyd was removed from the patrol car, and placed on the ground on his stomach. One of the patrol officers, the most senior officer present, and a field training officer, placed his knee on …

Mounting concern over the negative externalities of industrialized animal agriculture, coupled with falling cost curves of novel food technologies have birthed the field of cellular agriculture: a new category of food technology seeking to reproduce the sensory experiences of animal protein, and promising a cleaner, more ethical way of enjoying animal proteins. This research examines consumer acceptance of precision fermentation (PF) made egg products in Germany, Singapore, and the USA. Using an online survey of 3,006 participants, the study examines demographic and dietary traits that predict willingness to try such products and identifies the reasons why consumers are most attracted …

The Marginalised Nativism Strikes Back: Critical Discourse Analysis Of The Afd Party’S Anti-Refugee Campaign In Germany, Raihanna Athaayaa Ari Sudjono, Aditya Batara Gunawan
Jurnal Politik
Born as a Eurosceptic party in 2013, the Alternative für Deutschland (AfD) Party shifted its agenda to anti-refugee and anti-Islamic issues after the 2015 refugee crisis in Europe. This shift is evident in the discourse of traditional campaign posters distributed during the 2017 federal election in Germany. This article aims to map and conduct a critical discourse analysis of the refugee crisis issues constructed by the AfD Party through traditional campaign posters. The author argues that the AfD Party's anti-refugee and anti-Islam discourse is significantly influenced by factors such as interests, ideology, and social, economic, and political conditions. This research …
Collaborative And Engaged Research To Strengthen Equity And Adaptive Governance In Co-Managed Fisheries, Gabrielle V. Hillyer
Collaborative And Engaged Research To Strengthen Equity And Adaptive Governance In Co-Managed Fisheries, Gabrielle V. Hillyer
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Small-scale, co-managed fisheries are found throughout the world and often represent intertwining cultures, societies, communities, economies, institutions, and governments. They face complex issues, derived from ecological and social sources. Solving these issues requires diverse expertise, often developed through engaged methodologies which can facilitate collaborative solution creation between researchers, community members, and others. In this dissertation, I demonstrate the benefits of these engaged methodologies and review how they, when coupled with anticolonial approaches to research, can create more equitable solutions to complex issues. This dissertation focuses on multiple projects within the wild clam fishery in Maine including: (1) the creation of …

Planeswalking: Magic: The Gathering Across Analog And Digital Platforms, Jack Murray
Electronic Theses and Dissertations, 2020-
This dissertation analyzes the relationship between Wizards of the Coast's trading card game Magic: The Gathering and its digital adaptations. I used critical technocultural, ludic discourse analysis, and ludic textual analysis to examine the analog trading card game and digital adaptations. I examined an archive of paratextual media including trade magazines, developer blogs, game reviews, and player guides. I chose Magic for its long history, impact on the analog game industry, and the sheer number of adaptations that have been produced. This analysis begins by introducing a method for describing analog to digital adaptations called Adaptation Mapping. Adaptation mapping describes …
Technologies And Time Tempers: How Things Mediate A State’S (Cyber Vulnerability) Disclosure Practices, Clare Stevens
Technologies And Time Tempers: How Things Mediate A State’S (Cyber Vulnerability) Disclosure Practices, Clare Stevens
Secrecy and Society
State secrecy and disclosure practices are often treated as processes of intentional and strategic human agency, and as forms of political time management (Bok 1982; Horn 2011). Through a critical analysis of the United States government’s disclosure practices in the context of their discourse around the cybersecurity “Vulnerabilities Equities Process” (VEP), this paper will present a two-fold argument against these conventional treatments of secrecy and disclosure. While government secrecy and disclosure can certainly be understood as a form of (agential) timing, orientation and control (Hom 2018), this paper will also show how government secrecy practices are emergent at the point …
Reconfiguring Digital Citizenship: Civic Hacking, Data Activism, And Democracy Platforms In South Korea, Danbi Yoo
Doctoral Dissertations
This dissertation focuses on ‘civic tech’, the global phenomenon of tech-based voluntary action of citizens emerging with the rise of the culture of openness and sharing and initiatives of open government data. What does the ‘civic’ of civic tech mean? And what makes civic tech democratic and democratizing? These questions have been rarely asked or conveniently understood with Western-based theories and cases of tech-oriented civic actions. Combining critical studies of technology and civic engagement with the emerging scholarship of digital citizenship, I use the concept of digital citizenship as a heuristic tool to examine how digital and data technologies intervene …
