Pursuant to the signing of a cooperative agreement (dated 4 Sep 81) between the Michigan Department of Transportation, the Michigan Department of State and Western Michigan University, authorizing an archaeological survey of the approaches and bridge relocation along US-12 over the Fawn River near White Pigeon in St. Joseph County, Michigan, a team of archaeologists from the Department of Anthropology initiated a literature and documents search and on-site evaluation of the project area in order to ascertain whether road improvement activities planned for this segment of the US-12 corridor would adversely impact cultural resources. A 20-day field/informant type of archaeological survey was performed on a 13 section corridor in Park and Mendon townships in St. Joseph County and section 32 of Brady Township in Kalamazoo County, Michigan. This survey universe bordered on portions of the Portage River and its tributaries and along the shores of Portage and Fishers lakes. Twenty-nine prehistoric human occupation sites were located, described and recorded during the survey, five of which had been previously known (four unrecorded). The 1980 Settlement Pattern Survey in Allegan County, Michigan observed and recorded 75 prehistoric sites representing a total of 81 components. This report describes and evaluates these sites and the archaeological materials recovered from them. Site location relative to second and third order streams in this portion of the Lower Kalamazoo River basin is evaluated, and the importance of this relationship in comparison with soil association and landform is assessed.

In 1980 the Kalamazoo Basin Survey moved upstream into the upper valley of Calhoun and Jackson Counties, establishing and investigating three transects located between the communities of Battle Creek on the west and Concord on the east (Fig. 1). Transect A encompasses 94.5 km² of Convis, Emmett, Marshall and Pennfield Townships in Calhoun County. Transect B comprises 74.1 km² of Albion, Eckford, Marengo and Sheridan Townships in the same county. In 1979 Western Michigan University undertook the Phase I archae.ological survey of 20 miles along the proposed route of US-31, Matthew Road to I-94, in Berrien County, Michigan. A report on this work by Elizabeth Garland and William Mangold was submitted to the Michigan Department of Transportation and the Michigan Department of State in May, 1980 (Garland and Mangold 1980).

The 1979 site location survey identified eight sites partially or completely within the proposed right-of-way which were deemed to be sufficiently significant to require further testing. Site locations (on topographic maps) are provided on Maps 1-A, 1-B, 2-A, 2-B. Listed …

This project was carried out under terms of a contract between Western Michigan University and Gardner Management Company of Kalamazoo, Michigan, Mr. Jeff Gardner, President.

Mr. Gardner requested that this survey be done via a phone call to Elizabeth Garland in early May. He subsequently forwarded maps and provided information necessary for project planning and a budget was prepared. The contract was signed May 20, 1981.

An Analysis Of The Faunal Remains From The Schwerdt Site, A Late Prehistoric Encampment In Allegan County, Michigan, Michael J. Higgins

Analysis of faunal remains from the Schwerdt site, a fifteenth century encampment on the Kalamazoo River, reveals a temporary late spring occupation with an exploitative strategy aimed primarily at the spawning sturgeon. The position of Schwerdt in a larger subsistence/ settlement system is examined through comparisons with other contemporaneous sites in the southeastern Lake Michigan region. Changes in subsistence strategies on the northern periphery of effective maize agriculture.

A Petrographic Analysis Of Black Mesa, Arizona Ceramics, Elizabeth M. Garrett

Seven ceramic types from excavated Anasazi sites on Black Mesa were examined petrographically in order: (1) to obtain an accurate description of the geologic tempering m aterial; (2) to determine if specific ceramic types from Black Mesa and the surrounding area share a common area of manufacture; and (3) to compare the tempering material in the ceramics with the mineralogical components in the Wepo and Toreva Formations in order to determine if the ceramic items contain locally available material.

The survey area includes a total distance of about two miles extending east and west of the village of Mottville along U.S. 12 in St. Joseph and Cass Counties, Michigan. The village of Mottville is located in St. Joseph County. Three alternates have been proposed by MOOT for widening the approaches and replacing the existing bridge which crosses the St. Joseph River north of Mottville (Fig. 1).

Alternate A involves relocating the bridge to a position north of the present crossing which wo~ld have the effect of straightening the approaches in each direction.

The White Walnut Creek research area consists of approximately 1437 ha in eight sections of T5S, R2W, Perry County, Illinois. Physiographically speaking, the study area lies within the southern portion of the till plains region known as the Mt. Vernon Hill Country and is characterized by mature topography as reflected in gentl~ rolling hills and broad alluvial valleys. Floristically, this drainage is part of the Oak-Hickory Forest Region of the Western Mesophytic Forest as defined by Braun (1950).

The 1979 Settlement Pattern Survey (SPS 79) in Allegan County, Michigan observed and recorded a total of 74 prehistoric sites which revealed 10 identifiable components. The majority of sites were small lithic scatters which did not yield culturally diagnostic artifacts. In general the results of this field season conformed with expectations based upon soils, landform and drainage patterns in the survey universe. This report describes and evaluates the significance of the archaeologi ca 1 data recovered.

This project was undertaken in response to a request by Mr. Ronald Copping of the Kalamazoo County Road Commission, under terms of a written agreement between the Principal Investigator and the Road Commission which was accepted on October 14, 1980. The purpose of the investigation was to determine the existence of historic or prehistoric sites in those portions of the Climax-Fulton Road Reconstruction Project which involve relocation of the existing 66 foot right-of-way.
