Regulation And Trade Of Genetically Modified Products, Luc Veyssiere, Konstantinos Giannakas

The emergence of agricultural biotechnology and the subsequent introduction of genetically modified (GM) products into the food system have been among the most controversial issues surrounding the increasingly scrutinized agri-food system. While agricultural producers have responded to the agronomic benefits associated with the producer-oriented, first generation of GM products and have been adopting GM crops in increasing numbers, consumers around the world have expressed an aversion to food products containing GM ingredients. Consumer opposition to GM products varies significantly both between and within countries and is founded on health, environmental, ethical and/or philosophical concerns about agricultural biotechnology.

The increase in machinery costs this year has created uncertainty about what are fair costs for custom services. Fuel costs certainly are a major factor, but the purchase or “sticker” prices of machinery and the repair costs have increased as well. Fuel costs have increased about 46 percent over the past two years since the last Custom Rates surveys were taken in the Spring of 2004. Over the same period, overhead costs which include taxes, interest and insurance went up 14 percent and labor costs increased 10 percent. Nebraska continues to be one of the highest states in terms of its dependency on property taxation for funding governmental functions. For agricultural real estate property owners, this tax can, and often does, become quite burdensome since it does not relate directly to the level of income earnings (off the land) or the benefits received (the majority of property tax obligations are for public schools and not propertyenhancing services like police and fire protection, roads/bridges, etc.). It is little wonder that rural citizens are particularly concerned about it.

This is a study in three parts: the general impact of Wal-Mart and big box stores on the economy; an empirical look at Wal-Mart’s impacts on 15 Nebraska communities; and a review of research on ways that local retailers can compete against big box stores.

Part one suggests that Wal-Mart has both positive and negative impacts on the economy. Wal-Mart helps increase productivity and causes consumer prices to fall. Further, a number of studies found that employment increased in communities that received a new Wal-Mart store. However, other studies found that entry of a Wal-Mart failed to lead to net …

Shifts In Agricultural Land Valuation In South Dakota: From Market-Based To Income Based Criteria, Tonya Hansen, Richard Shane, Larry Janssen

Agricultural land prices rise amidst increased demand from agricultural producers and individuals seeking land for recreational, speculative, or residential uses. Interest in changing South Dakota's method of valuing agricultural land from a market-based to an income-based approach surfaced and resurfaced in the late 1970s and 1990s, respectively. Using results from two studies, we describe differences in land market conditions between these time periods and summarize the state and county valuation shifts resulting from adopting an income valuation approach. Specifically, we report internal valuation shifts between crop and pasture landowners and external valuation shifts between agricultural landowners and nonagricultural property owners.

Nebraska’s agricultural land values rose an average of 9.6 percent during the year ending February 1, 2006. This brought the state’s average all-land value to over $1,000 per acre and the total worth of agricultural real estate to more than $45 billion.

In the wake of a series of generally favorable income years for most of the state’s agricultural sector, land values have advanced rather sharply over the past three years – particularly in the eastern third of the state. The three eastern districts have experienced value increases of 40 percent or more since February 2003.

Food demand influences agricultural production. Modern agricultural practices have resulted in polluted soil, air and water, eroded soil, dependence on imported oil, and loss of biodiversity. The goal of this research is to investigate the environmental impact of pesticide and fertilizer application, water consumption, and energy used to produce commodities for a vegetarian and non vegetarian diet in California. The working assumption is that greater number and amount of inputs are associated with greater environmental impact. The literature supports this notion. The purpose of this paper is to develop a simple model of an economy in which growth is driven by a combination of exogenous technical change in agriculture and a rising world demand for labor-intensive manufactured exports. We explore the relative roles of an exogenous agricultural productivity shock and rising export demand in a model with two traded industrial goods and a non-traded agricultural good, food. When the non-traded sector uses a specific factor, we show that technical change in agriculture may be the key to factor migration into industry, in particular driving intersectoral labor migration. Following a year of climbing fuel prices, tough crop prices and average yields, I really didn’t expect to be reporting record high net farm income for the State of Nebraska, but that’s the news I have to report. Net Farm Income for 2005 was $83,095, up 5 percent over last year’s record high income. I was really surprised as the averages were coming in, but it didn’t take long to understand where the numbers were coming from.

Sustainable development still remains the best option to secure a viable future. Why are some leaders more prone to implement sustainable development policies than others, and does the leaders' political orientation affect such decision-making? Leaders are often faced with constraints that make them choose policies that do not necessarily lead to sustainability from an ecological point of view. This thesis addresses these issues by examining two case studies that involve an analysis of the sustainable development policies implemented by President Lula in Brazil and President Chavez in Venezuela and the constraints that have hindered them in doing so.

In an earlier newsletter (March 15, 2006) steps were outlined for arriving at a crop share and cash rent. It was ‘argued’ that establishing the productivity of the rental property is fundamental. Once the size of the pie is determined, it can then be divided between the resources used to produce the crop. As illustrated in the March 15th newsletter, failure to value the contributions so they add up to the expected revenue will misrepresent the actual value of the contributions.

A computer program designed to aid Nebraska cooperatives in making financial decisions will be released this month by University of Nebraska–Lincoln Extension. The NebCAST program will enable directors and managers of any cooperative to assess the effects of their equity management decisions on the organization and its members in a manner consistent with the decision-making processes cooperatives typically follow. NebCAST, which stands for University of Nebraska–Lincoln Extension Cooperative Analytical Simulation Tool, was developed by Darrell R. Mark, Jeffrey S. Royer, and Rik R. Smith of the UNL Department of Agricultural Economics.

Some producers find it advantageous to lease their cattle to other producers either for cash or for a share of the calf crop. This may be in the course of ultimately transferring the herd — e.g., to a child or other new owner. It may also be used by a producer who has been forced to liquidate his/her herd and wishes to re-establish a new herd.
