A weekly comparative marketing study of above-average and below-average quality slaughter cattle was conducted over a 154 week time period (Jan 1997 to Dec 1999). Two data sets containing carcass information on 1500 head of fed cattle were randomly selected from a data set containing carcass information on 2590 steers. Weekly average price per cwt. was calculated for both pens using two different pricing systems: a) the dressed weight pricing system; and b) the Agricultural Marketing Service grid pricing system. Since then, China has realized significant development in its economic and sociopolitical areas. The Chinese government implemented a gradual reform strategy to revitalize the Chinese economy. Step by step, the government granted greater autonomy to the enterprises and rural households to raise productivity. Communities recognize urban forest resource sustainability, maintenance and enhancement of forested aesthetics as an important value. They support these areas with tax dollars, local government agency involvement (usually Parks and Recreation or Public Works departments), and with efforts in many cases by both individuals and volunteer organizations in management and planning.

Freedom to Farm legislation enacted in 1996 was widely perceived as a dramatic step toward a more market oriented farm policy which would create a producer decision environment more conducive to competitive adjustments. Enacted in a time of high market prices and large exports of agricultural products, the transition payments were initially larger than deficiency payments would have provided. Generally, this legislation received strong support from Midwestern and Central Plains states. However, final passage was secured through concessions to legislators from other regions.

Geography

Apprentice programs offer a method to encourage responsible individual behavior by laying the foundation for successful collective property rights. Apprenticeship has three purposes: to restrict the rate of entry, to affect the quality of the participant, and to create the conditions for collective action for sustainability. Apprenticeship could be an important fishery management tool, particularly in decentralized, adaptive management regimes that require ongoing, multi-party negotiation for success. It is not vocational training; instead it serves a public purpose: to create the conditions for stewardship and participation in management. This fact is underscored by the focus of the Center’s session on "Water Resource Issues in the Arkansas Delta" during its recent joint Conference. Water issues in the Delta include declining water tables, salt water intrusion, and water quality (especially suspended sediment, nitrate and pesticides). Excessive phosphorus loading has been identified as the primary cause of decreasing water quality in Lake Champlain. Dairy farms are the major source of phosphorus pollution to the lake and are targeted to reduce phosphorus run-off. The goal of this research is to determine the farm-level financial impact of phosphorus management on different sizes of Vermont dairy farms. Farm financial performance following implementation of manure management is simulated by farm size (60 cows, 150 cows, and 350 cows) over a ten-year time horizon using the Farm Level Income and Policy Simulation Modeling System (FLIPSim). This paper looks at the willingness to pay for and participate in a curbside recycling program based on a survey of 401 residents in Ogden, Utah. Modifying the Cameron and James (1987) econometric model to fit ordered-interval data, we estimate that the mean willingness to pay for curbside recycling is $2.05 per month, and that 72% of the residents would willingly participate in such a program. Furthermore, females, young people, college-educated, those currently recycling without monetary reward, those regarding recycling as beneficial to the community and nation, and those with relatively high incomes are willing to pay the most for …

Estimating The Off-Farm Labor Supply In Canada, Wayne Howard, Michael Swidinsky

Off-farm labor supply in Canada is modeled using separate off-farm labor participation and off-farm labor supply equations, which allows variables to affect participation and labor supply differently. The data used in this study are from Statistics Canada’s Agriculture-Population Linkage Database, which links the Population Census for 1986 to a 20% sample from the Census of Agriculture. Results indicate that age, education and wages have large, significant and opposite effects on participation and supply, and that government efforts to stabilize and supplement farm incomes through rural employment programs may have less effect on labor allocation decisions than do the underlying demographic …

Income And Expenditure Differentials In The Agricultural Communities In Selangor, Hui Ling Tan

Agriculture sector plays an important role in the economic and social development of Malaysia. The purpose of this study is to examine the income and expenditure differentials in the agricultural communities in Selangor. It is based on the data from the Socio-Economic Survey of Farm Households under Area Farmers' Organization (AFO) in Peninsular Malaysia, conducted by the Fanners' Organization Authority (FOA) in 1993. This study shows that the mean income among heads of households in the agricultural communities is only about RM605 per month. Pronounced income differentials occur in terms of ethnicity, education level and occupation of heads of households. …
