Analysis Of Intersectoral Linkages Between Agriculture And Industry In Nigeria, M I. Abudu
CBN Occasional Papers
This paper uses time series data to analyse the relationship between agricultural growth and industrial performance for the three-decade period 1966 - 1995. Agricultural growth influences industry in many ways. It provides the raw materials needed by industry; it creates direct demand for the output of consumption goods of industries and indirect demand for the output of basic and capital goods industries. Analysing the input-output coefficients, the paper found that most primary and secondary commodity groups have weak backward and forward linkages, while the quantitative relationships between agricultural growth and industrial performance were non-significant, even when lagged. However, the link …

CBN Annual Report
In 1997, Nigeria experienced its third consecutive year of macroeconomic stability, resulting in modest improvement in domestic output growth and a persistently low inflation rate. The balance of payments position showed a modest surplus, and significant success was achieved in reducing domestic liquidity growth. Domestic output expanded further due to increased agricultural output and crude petroleum production, while the inflation rate declined further. Domestic output, measured by the Gross Domestic Product (GDP), increased by 3.8% in 1997, as against the average growth rate of 2.3% in the preceding three years. The fight against inflation was highly successful, reaching a single …

CBN Occasional Papers
The main aim of the paper is to critically review past commodity marketing systems in Nigeria, highlight some of the weaknesses which constrained their efficiency, as well as assess the performance of the present system and determine the advisability of retaining or modifying the present marketing arrangement. However, since the abolition of the Boards, it has been observed that the new produce marketing arrangement has introduced some dynamism into commodity pricing as produce prices for the first time have been determined by the combined forces of …

A Review And Analysis Of Agricultural Prices In Nigeria, 1977 - 1993, O. O. Akanji, E. U. Ukeje
Economic and Financial Review
This paper reviews and analyses the various prices that have been in existence in the agricultural sector since the re-organization of the produce marketing system in 1977 to the present free market system. It was observed that a close relationship existed between the market prices and the determined prices. However, some upward revisions in the official prices were found to be neither rational nor based on any concrete study. Moreso, most commodities were implicitly taxed during the period 1977-1985. The increases in the prices recorded between 1986 1993 due to market liberalization had an added problem of marketing. The domestic …

Developments In The Agricultural Sector During The Second Quarter Of 1987, Central Bank Of Nigeria Cbn

The widespread concern expressed about possible adverse effects of late arrival of rains abated slightly towards the end of the quarter. This was because in the south, middle belt and sudan savannah regions, the level of rain allowed early crops like maize, yam, groundnut and vegetables to be planted, nurtured and in some cases harvested. In the northern parts of the country, especially the sahelian zones, farmers experienced their first rains which facilitated land preparation activities as well as plan ting, especially in Kaduna, Bomo and Sokoto states. A total of 130, 952.35 tonnes of fertiliser were discharged at the …

The major factor responsible for the deterioration was the effect of failure to reach positive agreement on most of the international commodity organisations, particularly in respect of cocoa. In spite of random swings during the period, the prices of most of Nigeria's agricultural export commodities continued to maintain the rising trend observed since the forth quarter of 1982.
