We are living in times of rapid change in agriculture and in rural America. Hog and beef confinement systems, automated feeding systems, pesticides, four-wheel drive tractors and personal computers are innovations that did not exist or were seldom seen on farms 25 years ago. Interstate highways, factories in small cities, subterminal elevators and consolidated schools are examples of the changing landscape in rural America. In times of rapid change, many people are concerned about the future of agriculture, family farms and rural communities. From the start of the Peel-harvey study in 1976, scientific research and extension have been closely linked. Trials, some involving major drainage works, have been set up on about 30 farms and several field days and seminars have been held.

The Peel-Harvey Study Group anticipates that farmer acceptance of the Department of agriculture's recommendations will reduce the phosphorus input to the estuary by 30 to 40 per cent over the next three to five years. At the same time farmers will benefit from modified cultural practices better suited to the sandy soils of the coastal plain.

The following report is an analysis of factors which influence domestic water purchase among residents of a rural Kentucky county who must purchase hauled water, The results of the analysis are compared with previous studies of factors which influence domestic water use by urban dewllers participating in a piped water distribution system.

The results of the analysis of rural water purchase corroborates the findings from the studies of urban water use, showing that the amount of water purchased by a household is influenced by the socio-economic status of that household and by the price paid for water. As socio-economic status …

Purpose To inventory the number of persons presently employed in the various occupational areas in the Columbus, Nebraska service area and to identify the prOjected employment needs due to turnover and expansion for the next year and the following two years in the same occupations. Methods. The inventory was conducted in postal zip code area 686 surrounding Columbus, Nebraska. A 25 percent random sampling of business firms in the area netted 667 businesses to be inventoried. In a recent survey of farms and unallocated land throughout the State the authors looked at the area of land suitable for farming in Western Australia and the number of people available to farm the land in the next 10 to 15 years.
