Navigating Diversity Residencies: Overcoming Challenges And Making The Most Of It, Nada Abdelrahim, Haley Norris
Navigating Diversity Residencies: Overcoming Challenges And Making The Most Of It, Nada Abdelrahim, Haley Norris
POC in LIS Summit
This session offers an informal discussion and comparison between a current diversity resident and a former resident from the same R1 academic library. Despite the efforts of previous residents to create a toolkit aimed at transforming diversity residencies from performative to transformative, there is a lack of accountability in implementing these changes. Our experiences reveal that the support provided often goes unrecognized as labor from colleagues. The current landscape of defunding and banning DEI initiatives further strains support for diversity residencies, making it challenging for individuals to list their contributions on their CVs. This issue extends to post-residents who must …

Partnerships For Preservation: Building Capacity In The Archival Community, Lizeth Ramirez, Azalea Camach
POC in LIS Summit
Community-centered collecting and community archives have become central to the work of archives in academic institutions, especially those located in areas with diverse communities. Los Angeles and the broader Southern California region are culturally rich, representing a multiplicity of peoples whose stories have been excluded from the traditional historical record. Efforts to remedy this exclusion are underway in the special collections departments at various academic institutions, including California State University, Los Angeles (CSULA) and the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA). This important work is currently impacted both by limited institutional resources and the changing political landscape.
In order to …

It’S A Different World: #Hillmantok And New Frontiers Of Information Sharing In Bipoc Communities, Michael Mungin
POC in LIS Summit
HillmanTok is a free online learning community featuring Black educators and experts using TikTok to create video lectures and livestreams that teach a vast array of topics, from practical skills like gardening, cooking, hair care, and wealth building, to humanities, like histories, Black arts and entertainment, and mental health. Beginning, almost accidentally, on Jan. 20, 2025 with a 3-minute TikTok video by Dr. Leah Barlow, welcoming her students to her African American Studies class, HillmanTok rapidly became an educational movement with a massive following in the hundreds of thousands.
Simultaneously, the Trump administration began issuing numerous directives and executive orders, …
Student Work In The Evolving Library Landscape, Amy Pham, Jordan Kobayashi, William Tran
Student Work In The Evolving Library Landscape, Amy Pham, Jordan Kobayashi, William Tran
POC in LIS Summit
This presentation shares a work-in-progress from the Technical Services department at the University of San Diego Copley Library as we work to retool our student worker program to center student skills and interests, provide a job experience that is fulfilling and transferable, and act as a gateway for future potential librarians.
Student workers are integral to library operations, and student positions are valued both by the library and by the students themselves. For many students, working at the library may be one of their first jobs. However, resources related to supervising and mentoring student workers are typically centered around student …
Unequal Access: The Challenge Of Palestinian Representation In Libraries, Yael Noble, Raida Gatten, Rani J
Unequal Access: The Challenge Of Palestinian Representation In Libraries, Yael Noble, Raida Gatten, Rani J
POC in LIS Summit
This presentation brings together four librarians from public and academic institutions who have navigated significant challenges while developing collections, programs, and resources focused on Palestine during the past year. As information professionals, these panelists will share their experiences and the experiences of others with institutional resistance, external pressures, and threats that emerged specifically around Palestinian-focused work.
Presenters will explore the stark contrast between institutional approaches to Palestinian narratives compared to other diversity initiatives. Why are Palestinian perspectives subject to what scholars call the "Palestine Exception" in otherwise progressive spaces? How does this censorship and intimidation reflect a form of neo-McCarthyism …

Crisis Communication And Governance Response: A Case Study Of Pt Antam’S 2025 Misinformation Scandal, Rizky Kertanegara, Arius Krypton
Jurnal Administrasi Bisnis Terapan
This study analyzes the crisis communication strategy employed by PT ANTAM Tbk in response to the spread of misinformation concerning allegations of gold-related corruption in 2025. The crisis was sparked by a social media post suggesting that ANTAM's gold products were counterfeit, although the actual issue involved unauthorized use of the brand by former employees. Using a qualitative case study and the Situational Crisis Communication Theory (SCCT) framework, this paper evaluates the company’s strategic communication in mitigating reputational damage and maintaining stakeholder trust. Findings indicate that PT ANTAM deployed fact-based clarification, emphasized operational integrity, and reiterated strong corporate governance—aligned with …

African American Women’S Lived Experiences Of Adultification Bias And Emotional Well-Being, Carolyn Lovette Lanier
African American Women’S Lived Experiences Of Adultification Bias And Emotional Well-Being, Carolyn Lovette Lanier
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
While existing studies have explored the manifestations of adultification bias in various contexts, there is a significant gap in the literature regarding research on the emotional well-being of African American women who have navigated this bias. The purpose of this study was to understand how adultification bias manifests in the lives of African American women, to illuminate the nuances of how adultification bias unfolds in the lives of African American women, and to examine its presence within their emotional realms. The theoretical frameworks of adultification bias and emotional well-being ground the study. The key research questions centered on the specific …

Intrinsic Motivation Teaching Experiences Of Middle School Educators 4 Years After The Pandemic, Carmy Aristor
Intrinsic Motivation Teaching Experiences Of Middle School Educators 4 Years After The Pandemic, Carmy Aristor
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
The COVID-19 pandemic has altered the educational landscape, significantly impacting middle school educators’ intrinsic motivation to teach. While research has extensively addressed the immediate impacts of the pandemic on education, there remains a gap in understanding how middle school educators make sense of their intrinsic motivation teaching experiences 4 years after the pandemic. Grounded in intrinsic motivation as the conceptual framework supported by the self-determination theory (SDT), the purpose of this qualitative study was to gain an understanding of the intrinsic motivation teaching experiences of middle school educators 4 years after the pandemic. The central research question examined the lived …
Mental Health In Prisons: Examining Variations In Disorders Across Custody Levels, Ariel Bysiek
Mental Health In Prisons: Examining Variations In Disorders Across Custody Levels, Ariel Bysiek
Dissertations and Theses
The United States has a significantly large prison population with the number of people currently in a correctional facility being 1.9 million. Concern has been increasingly growing related to treatment of individuals in prison, particularly when it comes to solitary confinement. Many people believe that solitary confinement is unnecessarily cruel and debilitating to AIC's mental health. Studies have found contradicting information as to whether solitary impacts mental health. Part of the reason for this contradiction stems from the lack of measurement systems that are appropriate for AICs. The measures used in studies are meant for the general population, not individuals …
Fostering Meaningful Learning: Experiences Of Linguistically Diverse Trainers In Early Childhood Care And Education (Ecce) Professional Development, Anna Howell
Dissertations and Theses
Linguistically diverse trainers play a critical role in reshaping professional development (PD) within Early Childhood Care and Education (ECCE), yet their contributions remain marginalized within English-dominant institutional structures. This qualitative study explored how these trainers define and deliver meaningful learning experiences despite systemic barriers, limited resources, and monolingual policies. Grounded in critical constructivism, the research centered the lived experiences and voices of linguistically diverse trainers across multiple contexts. Through semi-structured interviews, participants shared how they co-constructed relational, culturally grounded, and linguistically affirming PD environments rooted in community knowledge and emotional connection. Findings reveal that meaningful learning occurs when training reflects …
Be Mindful: Examining A Brief Mindfulness Intervention On Educator Well-Being, Oceann S. Gittens
Be Mindful: Examining A Brief Mindfulness Intervention On Educator Well-Being, Oceann S. Gittens
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Teaching is currently rated as one of the topmost stressful occupations. Concerningly, chronic levels of stress can lead to poor mental and physical health, occupational burnout, and teacher attrition; all of which have a negative impact on student outcomes. Mindfulness-based interventions (MBIs) are commonly used to combat occupational stress by enhancing educator well-being. There is compelling evidence to support these types of interventions with teachers. However, the length of many MBIs may make them prohibitive for the average educator to participate in them. The literature suggests that a briefer format may be just as effective at reducing stress, but more …
Qualitative Thematic Analysis Of Crisis Communications From The Digital Pulpits Of Megachurches During Covid-19, Ralph Dustin Henderson
Qualitative Thematic Analysis Of Crisis Communications From The Digital Pulpits Of Megachurches During Covid-19, Ralph Dustin Henderson
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
The purpose of this qualitative thematic analysis multi-case study was to explore how secular crisis communication theories were adopted and modified by theological themes in U.S. megachurches during the first six weeks of the COVID-19 pandemic related lockdowns. Image Repair Theory (IRT), Discourse Renewal Theory (DRT), and Rhetorical Arena Theory (RAT) were examined alongside Christian themes (Theodicy, Radical Love, Physical Care, and Nontraditional Stakeholder Scope). Thematic analysis of sermon transcripts from 18 megachurches showed that IRT modified: high-attribution tactics were minimal; denial (via IMRA theodicy) defended the Church Universal (CU); evasion justified Church Local (CL)actions; and offensiveness reduction (esp. Transcendence) …

Using Media As A Source In Lessons: Media Literacy Methodology And Constructivist Media Decoding, Ayşe Aslı Sezgin Büyükalaca, Chris Sperry, Cyndy Scheibe
Journal of Media Literacy Education
Media literacy, beyond being an independent course, can be integrated into educational content at various levels through a structural approach that emphasizes questioning and understanding diverse perspectives. Students need tools to analyze diverse content critically, so it’s important to move away from traditional teacher-centered instruction. This paper examines a question-based approach to integrating media literacy into Turkish educational courses, emphasizing the Constructivist Media Decoding (CMD) method. The study highlights CMD’s potential to address gaps in Turkiye’s media literacy education, offering a detailed discussion of its theoretical background and benefits within the Turkish context. By illustrating CMD’s adaptability and value, this …

Constructivist Media Decoding In Elementary School: Media Literacy Instruction Across A School Year, Faith Rogow, Bridget Crossman, Michele Coolbeth, Janet Balk
Journal of Media Literacy Education
In 2021, Ithaca College’s Project Look Sharp conducted a pilot project to demonstrate that school librarians were in a unique position to provide media literacy instruction and function as building and district leaders to mentor teachers in media literacy integration. The initiative taught librarians to use constructivist media decoding (CMD) – an inquiry-based, curriculum driven approach to media analysis and production. This article, informed by the evaluation of that effort, offers a qualitative view from three elementary school librarians who were part of the pilot cohort. They describe how they implemented CMD in ways that can be duplicated by other …
A Systematic Review Of Transmedia Literacy: Implications For Lifelong Learning, Rafel Meyerhofer-Parra
A Systematic Review Of Transmedia Literacy: Implications For Lifelong Learning, Rafel Meyerhofer-Parra
Journal of Media Literacy Education
One of the main objectives of international agendas is the promotion of lifelong learning opportunities. Transmedia literacy, usually acquired informally, offers many of the key skills, competences and strategies to ensure learning in a world where technology has a predominant role. However, no analyses reporting the impact of their use are systematically identified in the literature. Therefore, a systematic review of the literature on transmedia literacy and its practices is proposed, searching 4 databases and analysing a total of 42 articles. The results show experiences with plural thematic, extension and educational context, mainly located in the formal educational system, and …

Media Literacy In The Crosshairs: Nato’S Strategic Goals And The Revival Of Protectionist Pedagogy, Nolan Higdon, Sydney Sullivan
Journal of Media Literacy Education
This qualitative study critically evaluated whether curricula’s power dynamics address the needs of students and educators or serve institutional or ideological agendas. To facilitate this evaluation, the study applied a critical media literacy framework to analyze the pedagogical approach promoted by the Center for Media Literacy within its educational framework. Employing narrative analysis grounded in progressive critical media literacy, the study interrogated the power structures and implicit messages embedded in the Center for Media Literacy’s report on The North Atlantic Treaty Organization, (NATO)-aligned media literacy pedagogy. The analysis identifies four key themes: the framing of NATO as a central target …

Insights From Educators: Integrating Ai Literacy Into Media Literacy Education In Practice, Stephanie Jean Tsang
Insights From Educators: Integrating Ai Literacy Into Media Literacy Education In Practice, Stephanie Jean Tsang
Journal of Media Literacy Education
Through in-depth interviews with junior high school teachers in Hong Kong who participated in a media and artificial intelligence literacy program intervention, this research highlights the importance of prioritizing values and ethics education over technical proficiency when incorporating artificial intelligence (AI) into media literacy training. While quantitatively assessing students’ literacy levels posed challenges, future media literacy programs should concentrate on introducing technological terminology and concepts, promoting awareness of potential issues, instilling values for responsible technology use, and fostering empathy to create a harmonious online environment. By focusing on fundamental values and key concepts rather than following fleeting AI trends, educators …
Classroom Contexts: Teachers Talk Teaching Media Literacy, Sakshi Bhalla, Michelle R. Nelson, Michael Spikes
Classroom Contexts: Teachers Talk Teaching Media Literacy, Sakshi Bhalla, Michelle R. Nelson, Michael Spikes
Journal of Media Literacy Education
In this study, we examine the lived experiences of educators who engage with youth through media literacy education. While prior research has examined the efficacy of media literacy education interventions, little attention has been paid to the contexts in which these are conducted. Our analysis of 20 semistructured interviews reveals how the structural context illuminates several “divides,” shaping how media literacy is taught and experienced. Three major themes emerged from the data: (1) teachers and high school students inhabit distinct media worlds, shaping their media understanding differently; (2) the socio-economic status of the school determines whether media literacy is taught …
Battle Cry To “Do The Research”: Vulnerability To Qanon, Alt Media, And Low News Media Literacy, Kaye D. Sweetser, Kalyca Lynn Becktel
Battle Cry To “Do The Research”: Vulnerability To Qanon, Alt Media, And Low News Media Literacy, Kaye D. Sweetser, Kalyca Lynn Becktel
Journal of Media Literacy Education
This survey (N = 579) investigated news media literacy among those likely to believe in the conspiracy theories of QAnon. Vulnerability to belief in QAnon conspiracies was predicted by a media diet of alternative media such as 4chan and SnapChat. Those vulnerable to QAnon conspiracy theories had lower news media literacy scores than those who appeared to be resistant to QAnon theories, and rated themselves with lower need for cognition and higher cynicism. Vulnerability to QAnon was predicted by a belief in other specific conspiracy theories, low value of news media literacy, less understanding of the news business, belief …

Disinformation Awareness Via Sms? Exploring A New Modality For Boosting Adult Media Literacy, Jannie Lilja, Ester Tottie, Niklas Eklund, Tobias Lindé, Gunhild Hoogensen Gjørv
Journal of Media Literacy Education
Given a rapidly evolving disinformation environment, many initiatives are currently being developed to counter the harmful impacts of disinformation. The aim of this study is to explore how an SMS intervention, as a hitherto untested modality for raising awareness of disinformation with promising potential and wide reach, could boost media literacy among adults. We probe the effects on a national sample of adult Swedish respondents (N = 2536). An initial survey is followed by a five-week text messaging intervention and concluded with a second survey. Respondents’ objective ability to identify false information, and their subjective perceptions of attitude and …

Trans* Educators In Early Childhood Through Secondary (Pk-12) Schools: An Exhaustive Literature Review, Chris Cyan Divens
Journal of Queer and Trans Studies in Education
This literature review provides documentation and analysis for 22 years of empirical, English-language research on trans* educators in early childhood through secondary (PK-12) education. A total of 87 publications from six different continents provide a basis for researchers and policymakers interested in better understanding this historically marginalized population. Findings include a diverse array of methodological and theoretical approaches as well as several meta-level findings concerning the varied circumstances of trans* educators. There is a need for additional research to address persistent gaps as well as for sweeping policy change and collective action to improve the unacceptable conditions of trans* educators.
The Relationship Between Psychological Contract Breach And Work Motivation And Attitude Among Tech Employees: The Moderating Role Of Conscientiousness, Rama E. Khoury
Master's Theses
There has been some research on moderating factors of the relationship between psychological contract breach (PCB) and work engagement and affective commitment. However, most studies conducted have mainly focused on situational factors (e.g., job satisfaction, exchange imbalance), not on individual factors (e.g., personality traits). This research gap leaves a question in the role that personality traits play in influencing the negative consequences of PCB. The purpose of this study was to examine the moderating role of conscientiousness on the relationship between PCB and two outcomes, work engagement and affective commitment. Hypotheses were tested using 103 technology industry employees in the …
