Language Of Love: Kafka’S Affective Meaning In Briefe An Milena, Kafka Aisyah Triny, Julia Wulandari
Language Of Love: Kafka’S Affective Meaning In Briefe An Milena, Kafka Aisyah Triny, Julia Wulandari
International Review of Humanities Studies
Franz Kafka is known for his twisted literature filled with dark atmosphere and word choices, however when it comes to writing letters to his muse, Milena, he uses words unknown to him. He expresses his barest soul to her using word choices that indicate someone who is amazed. For a person like Kafka, love is not all about complementing word choices and emotions, seen by his internal battles with himself and uncertainty regarding the topic of love. This research will use Geoffrey Leech’s semantic framework along with Monica Schwarz and Jeannette Chur’s Wortfeld theory. The study aims to examine Kafka’s …

Factors Influencing Information And Accessibility Of Tuberculosis Prevention Services Among Nomadic Fulani And Host Communities, Nigeria, Abolaji Azeez, Kabiru Salami
Journal of Social, Behavioral, and Health Sciences
Despite efforts to curtail tuberculosis (TB) in Nigeria, the country has not yet attained the global target. This study explored the dynamics of access to information about TB control and prevention among nomadic Fulani and their host communities. We used a mixed-methods approach and multistage sampling technique to recruit 812 respondents for the survey, and we conducted 18 in-depth interviews across six local government areas. The results indicated generally low access to TB information and services, with only 2% of nomadic Fulani engaging in TB prevention activities compared to 6.7% of host community members. Yoruba respondents had significantly higher odds …
Perceived Impact Of Participating As A Former Immigrant High School Athlete In A Program That Prioritized Social-Emotional Needs And Self-Determination Of Young Adult Males, Filip Cejovic
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Many studies have confirmed the positive impacts of extracurricular activities on students' academic achievement and social success, but also revealed that few educational policies go beyond addressing the most basic needs of language and lunch for immigrant students. As the process of assimilation can impact numerous factors and long-term outcomes for these students, this study explored extracurricular program structures that prioritize participants’ psychological needs and whether these structures have a positive impact on immigrant students’ self-determination, intrinsic motivation, and future success. This qualitative, practice-focused case study examined a purposeful sample of one boys’ high school soccer program at a public …

Effective Strategies For Deterring Unethical Behavior In U.S. Financial Institutions, Samuel Akinlade Sanni
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Unethical employee behavior in U.S. financial institutions continues to erode organizational trust and firms’ brand reputation. Leaders of financial institutions are concerned that unethical employee behavior can negatively impact firms’ profitability, competitiveness, and sustainability. Grounded in Kaptein’s corporate ethics virtue (CEV) model, the purpose of this qualitative pragmatic inquiry study was to explore how organizational ethical cultures influence employees’ behaviors. Data were collected through semistructured interviews with a sample of eight leaders in New York financial institutions, with a minimum of 5 years of successful experience in building a positive ethical environment, and by analyzing publicly available documents to support …

Results: The findings categorize individuals involved in co-reading into six groups: …
Simulated Walleye Responses To Various Harvest Regulations In A Nebraska Reservoir, Mikael Ranta, Melissa Wuellner, Keith D. Koupal
Simulated Walleye Responses To Various Harvest Regulations In A Nebraska Reservoir, Mikael Ranta, Melissa Wuellner, Keith D. Koupal
Transactions of the Nebraska Academy of Sciences and Affiliated Societies
Recreational fishing provides sociological and economic benefits, and fish populations are managed by state agencies to meet angler expectations. One of the most popular species in Midwest reservoirs are walleye (Sander vitreus), and most of these fisheries have established restrictions on the number and sizes of fish harvested. Regulations are set based on population structure and dynamics and management goals, but often agencies have incomplete information needed to establish regulations. Predictive models can provide insight on population responses and inform managers of the tradeoffs between angler restrictions and population sustainability. Lake McConaughy, Nebraska, supports a popular walleye fishery. …

Police officers must approach volatile situations that may escalate on a frequent basis. As first responders, they often do not have the luxury of ignoring conflict in public and must work to resolve the situation. However, officers’ presence may inadvertently escalate situations, leading to coercive responses, injury, or worse. The National De-Escalation Training Center (NDTC) has received $4.75 million dollars to provide de-escalation training that incorporates rapid personality assessment, mental health issue recognition, and situational awareness built on a procedural justice foundation. Using data from the first 2 years of trainings conducted across the United States, we have found that …
Does Reliance On Kin Erode With Market Integration? A Social Network Perspective, Ruizhe Liu
Does Reliance On Kin Erode With Market Integration? A Social Network Perspective, Ruizhe Liu
Anthropology ETDs
Kinship has long shaped human societies. Yet globalization and market integration (MI) are reshaping social structures. This dissertation investigates how kinship-based networks persist, adapt, or erode amid rapid socioeconomic change. It draws on ethnographic and social network data from 229 Mosuo households in southwest China, a matrilineal society experiencing increasing MI, to examine shifts in everyday cooperation.
The first study analyzes fixed name-generator data and finds a general decline in kin support as MI increases, though with considerable variation. The second study uses count models to explore unbounded support networks, showing that kin ties remain central in reproductive contexts, while …

Makara Human Behavior Studies in Asia
Schizophrenia is often characterized by delusions and hallucinations, which often appear as manifestations of religious delusions in the Banjar cultural context. This phenomenon can be understood through the hyper-religiosity theory, which explains excessive religious behavior in individuals with schizophrenia. This qualitative case study aims to identify the forms of religious delusion in individuals with hyper-religiosity and the underlying causal factors. Data were collected through in-depth interviews and observations with 10 informants, comprising four individuals with religious delusions selected using purposive sampling based on their experience of studying Tasawwuf and experiencing religious delusions and six significant others. The findings show that …

Body Acceptance, Body Dysmorphia Symptoms, And Selfie Behavior: Unpacking Their Relationships Among Filipinos, Marc Eric S. Reyes, Alyssa Ashley O. Ang Tong, Sherry Lyn H. Cada, Raymond Nathan A. Lopez, Jv Louise D. Natividad
Makara Human Behavior Studies in Asia
The emergence and proliferation of social media gave rise to “selfitis,” an obsession-compulsive engagement in photo selfie-related activities. This phenomenon raises a problem, especially for people experiencing body acceptance concerns and body dysmorphia symptoms, as both of these variables may be linked with photo selfie-taking behavior. With the Philippines having the second-highest average daily social media usage globally, this study explored the association between body acceptance, body dysmorphia symptoms, and selfie behavior. We utilized a cross-sectional explanatory design and investigated the possible mediating and moderating role of body dysmorphia symptoms in the relationship between body acceptance and selfies among 506 …

The Operational Performance Of Buildings In A Humid Subtropical Climate: Insights From Empirical Data And Assessment Models, Oluwafemi Awolesi
LSU Master's Theses
This thesis evaluates the operational performance of residential and non-residential buildings in a humid subtropical climate, emphasizing Indoor Environmental Quality (IEQ) and energy performance through empirical data and assessment models. Motivated by the increasing need for integrated sustainability evaluations, this study combines a systematic review with multi-method field investigations to advance understanding in this domain. The systematic review critically analyzed 99 case study articles, identifying dominant IEQ assessment methodologies and highlighting methodological inconsistencies that hinder cross-study comparability. Emerging computational approaches, although promising, remain underutilized. The review advocates for standardized, climate-responsive, and feedback-oriented evaluation frameworks. Field investigations assessed IEQ and energy …

This study aimed to translate, adapt, and validate the modified version of the Player Experience of Need Satisfaction (PENS) for Malaysian Multiplayer Online Battle Arena (MOBA) players. The translation and adaptation process involved a rigorous procedure with nine mental health and linguistic experts. A non-probability sampling method was applied by recruiting 491 participants from the MOBA Facebook groups. The parallel analysis indicated a two-factor structure (autonomy and competence as one factor and relatedness as another factor). Confirmatory factor analysis demonstrated a better model fit for the translated version compared with the original English version, with satisfactory psychometric properties. Future studies …

Exploring Giftedness And The Gifted Learner In Education And Beyond: An Autoethnographic Study With Critical Friends, Katrina Reynen-Woodward, Penny N. Round Dr, Pearl Subban, Edwin Creely
The Qualitative Report
The concept of giftedness is complex, contested and evolving and may be thus frustratingly challenging to apply in practice. One area of emerging research is understanding the personal experiences of those who identify as gifted in order to better represent the myriad culturally diverse conceptions of giftedness that evolve over a lifetime. In this article, I employ an autoethnographic approach to explore aspects of my adult identity as an atypical learner. This journey unfolds in crafted vignettes that reveal the complexities and multi-dimensionality of my learning and are analysed using Gagné’s Differentiated Model of Giftedness and Talent (DMGT). As I …

Road To Recovery: Understanding The Personality Typology, Clinical Features, And Risk Of Relapse In Filipinos With Substance Use Problems, Marc Angelo Ronquillo, Marc Eric Reyes, Ryan Francis Cayubit
Makara Human Behavior Studies in Asia
Knowing the patient’s personality can assist the clinician in improving their relationship and tailoring the interventions for the patient. Several studies have reported that treatment and prevention programs must be tailored to an individual’s social and cultural attributes to facilitate continuous recovery and prevent relapse. This study aimed to develop a deeper understanding of the personality typology, clinical features, and risk of relapse in Filipinos with substance use problems in rehabilitation centers. We used a sequential-explanatory mixed-method approach with two phases (Phase 1: descriptive, cross-sectional design; Phase 2: phenomenological design) to provide an evidence-based framework to tailor treatment according to …

Factors Influencing Successful Community Reentry For Formerly Incarcerated Men Who Have Received Supportive Services: A Qualitative Study, Ryan W. Fechner
Theses and Graduate Projects
The current study examined reentry experience among men following incarceration to determine salient protective and risk factors. The study reviews the impacts of incarceration, previous factors of recidivism identified in research, and qualitative research conducted on justice-involved individuals. Using a grounded theory qualitative approach, nine men recruited from a substance use treatment program who were released from prison within the past five years were interviewed to explore protective and risk factors. Findings from the current study were consistent with previous research in identifying barriers to reentry, such as difficulties finding housing, employment, and transportation. Additional findings indicate the importance of …

Examining The Relationship Between Stigma And Physical Disability Through Lived Experiences, Apphia M. Donoghue
Student Journal of Occupational Therapy
The primary objective of this study is to examine the relationship between stigma and physical disability, to discover the impact that perceived stigma has on several factors in a person’s life including overall health, well-being, and quality of life. A qualitative research design was used. Six semi-structured interviews were conducted to examine the relationship between stigma and physical disability, and to discover the impact of stigma on overall health and well-being. Three themes are identified: stigma narratives, shifts in awareness, and factors inhibiting quality of life. Stigma narratives contained three subthemes: experiences with stigma, frequency of stigma, and settings where …
Listening To Facilitate Change: Youth And Indigenous Voices Call For Critical Environmental Justice At Great Salt Lake, Sarah Woodbury, Christina Morgan
Listening To Facilitate Change: Youth And Indigenous Voices Call For Critical Environmental Justice At Great Salt Lake, Sarah Woodbury, Christina Morgan
Transforming Communities
As Great Salt Lake faces rapid ecological decline, nearby communities face serious environmental injustices. Yet, despite threats ranging from toxic dust to migration inequality, state actions have been insufficient to maintain recommended water levels and ecological health at the lake. Our critical commentary uses the lens of critical environmental justice to consider human values connected to the lake. We briefly describe current advocacy efforts for the lake including a 2023 gathering and resultant panel at the 2024 Community Engagement Conference in Moab, Utah. Ultimately, we argue that braiding together multiple types of knowledge encourages the growth of new approaches to …

"Fulfilling Work With A Sufficient Salary": Resident Librarians' Perceptions On Compensation, Courtney Shareef
"Fulfilling Work With A Sufficient Salary": Resident Librarians' Perceptions On Compensation, Courtney Shareef
POC in LIS Summit
Because of its low pay and slow salary growth, the master’s in library and information science was once ranked by Forbes.com as the worst degree for jobs. For the resident librarian, this can be particularly troubling, given the precarious nature of the temporary position. Although there is a growing body of literature on various aspects of resident librarian experience, virtually nothing exists on views of their compensation. How does the resident librarian’s perception of compensation impact their residency experience? How does that perception also impact the librarian’s decision to remain in librarianship at the residency’s conclusion? This lightning talk will …
Building Community In The Workplace, Jawahir Javaid
Building Community In The Workplace, Jawahir Javaid
POC in LIS Summit
Using research in relational sociology and personal experience, I would like to present on how relational interactions help prevent alienation and isolation in the workplace. I chose to work at an academic library due to its commitment to Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI), yet the absence of empathy and mutual respect in workplace culture made it increasingly difficult to feel valued. Department transactions felt dehumanizing and exploitive, and DEI principles felt abstract rather than lived experiences. I turned to relational sociology for a broader understanding of why I felt excluded in a work environment priding itself in DEI values.
Relational …
Interesting Times And Interesting Internships: A Case Study Of Mlis Internships, Megan Bauerle
Interesting Times And Interesting Internships: A Case Study Of Mlis Internships, Megan Bauerle
POC in LIS Summit
Library and information science professionals work in diverse sectors, from academic, corporate, and data management fields, each requiring specific professional knowledge alongside librarianship skills. While an MLIS degree often provides a strong theoretical understanding of librarianship, many degree programs do not require internship or practicum experience (Torres et al., 2022). The COVID-19 pandemic additionally changed the format of many library internships, which became hybrid or virtual. This presentation reflects on student outcomes in a case study of three library science internships held between 2024 and 2025, including a remote academic library OER internship (Loyola Marymount University), an in-person corporate library …

Teaching Black Digital Humanities: Making Space In The Age Of Big Tech, Kiran Mohammadi-Williams
POC in LIS Summit
In the age of "Big Tech", where companies like Amazon, Google, Meta, and Apple own a joint monopoly over most tech products, tools, and digital interfaces, data by and about Black people are stolen and erased or used in ways that actively target and harm them. In order to defray this, we must create more Black spaces on the Internet, more digital projects centering Black people and Black experiences, and make digital tools and methods for research accessible to Black students and communities. In this talk, I will briefly discuss three approaches to teaching about/with Black Digital Humanities and their …
Using Inclusive Language In Library Instruction To Foster Equitable Spaces, Dominique Dozier
Using Inclusive Language In Library Instruction To Foster Equitable Spaces, Dominique Dozier
POC in LIS Summit
In this session, I’ll share how I’ve used the inclusive language strategies I learned in the ACUE Inclusive Teaching for Equitable Learning course to improve library instruction and create more equitable spaces for students. Language is powerful, and the way we speak can either open doors or unintentionally create barriers for students from diverse backgrounds. By using inclusive language, we can ensure all students feel respected, valued, and supported in the library.
I’ll walk through simple, practical examples of how inclusive language can be applied in library workshops, one-on-one research appointments, and everyday interactions with students. Whether it’s using gender-neutral …
Immediate Sites For Change: Transforming Librarian Burnout Into Hope And Finding Liberation, April Ibarra Siqueiros
Immediate Sites For Change: Transforming Librarian Burnout Into Hope And Finding Liberation, April Ibarra Siqueiros
POC in LIS Summit
As a tenure-track librarian specializing in user experience, I have faced significant barriers contributing to burnout and mental health challenges. Placing hope in library-wide or systemic level changes often left me feeling powerless and hopeless. However, exploring and focusing my attention to the “immediate sites” where I do have agency (the spaces, relationships, and practices within reach) opened pathways to possibility and hope.
In this presentation, I will share how identifying and working within these immediate sites and pairing them with radical imagination, creative practice, joy, curiosity, and the support of collaborative allies allowed me to begin reclaiming a sense …
Glimmer Gathering: Healing And Reciprocity, Maria Rios
Glimmer Gathering: Healing And Reciprocity, Maria Rios
POC in LIS Summit
Glimmer gathering is a trauma-informed list making practice; an excavation and unearthing of what already exists inside of you. As library and information science professionals--we, especially Black, Indigenous, POC women-- are tasked with being the expert, exceptional, and overextended---and ultimately led to burn out. Capitalism relies on us being disconnected from our bodies so that we remain pliable to extractive, depleting, and harmful cycles. Rather than giving you a prescriptive list of "what to do" to heal and break these cycles; I will offer a few suggestions and invite us to co-create a shared body of creative knowledge. Gather for …

Power Mapping: A Personal Tool For Navigating Hierarchy Power Structures, Noelle Leong
POC in LIS Summit
It can feel particularly overwhelming to keep track of and read dynamics between colleagues, especially when it comes to being strategic about who you can rely on for support or not. Ideally, we wouldn’t have to consider subtext, passive aggression, or empty politeness, but as we know, the people around us do not all have our best interests at heart. This knowledge can make or break any of the changes you are trying to make, big or small, to better serve your patrons or to improve your workplace. For those who can benefit from an organizational tool to best analyze …
