The Influence Of Generative Artificial Intelligence On Leadership: An Exploration Of Technology Professionals' Perceptions Regarding Leadership, Adaptation, And Organizational Culture In The Digital Age, Paul Thomas Herdman

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

The emergence of generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) has introduced new complexities for organizational leadership, requiring technology professionals to adapt in real time to evolving digital tools, strategic demands, and cultural dynamics. Although prior research has examined AI’s broad influence on business processes, few studies have explored how technology leaders experience and interpret the leadership challenges and opportunities arising from GenAI. This qualitative dissertation addressed that gap by investigating the perceptions of senior technology professionals regarding GenAI’s influence on leadership roles, competencies, decision making, and organizational culture. Using Lanigan’s (1977) phenomenological method of human science, this study explored the lived experiences …

A Cross-Cultural Analysis Of Violence Prevention Programs In Central Asia And The U.S. Education Systems, Nilufar Bobjonova

Graduate Research Papers

The rise of youth violence and aggressive behavior has become a significant public health concern, affecting individuals on multiple levels, including physical, economic, social, and psychological well-being. Given the national attention this issue has received in the United States, various prevention programs have been designed to equip children with essential knowledge, skills, and attitudes to minimize their involvement in violent activities (Higgerson et al., 2008). Preventing violence through structured programs is essential for creating safe and supportive educational environments. Schools serve as an ideal platform for implementing these initiatives, as they provide a consistent setting for teaching young individuals critical …

A Cross Attention Approach To Diagnostic Explainability Using Clinical Practice Guidelines For Depression, Sumit Dalal, Deepa Tilwani, Manas Gaur, Sarika Jain, Valerie L. Shalin, Amit P. Sheth

Psychology Faculty Publications

The lack of explainability in using relevant clinical knowledge hinders the adoption of artificial intelligence-powered analysis of unstructured clinical dialogue. A wealth of relevant, untapped Mental Health (MH) data is available in online communities, providing the opportunity to address the explainability problem with substantial potential impact as a screening tool for both online and offline applications. Inspired by how clinicians rely on their expertise when interacting with patients, we leverage relevant clinical knowledge to classify and explain depression-related data, reducing manual review time and engendering trust. We developed a method to enhance attention in contemporary transformer models and generate explanations …

A Grounded Theory Analysis Of Multiple Sclerosis Caregiver Interviews: Utilizing Pearlin’S Stress Process Model To Explore The Gender Effects Of Care, Jennifer C. Hughes, John Hughes, Elizabeth P. Talbot, James Carter

Social Work Faculty Publications

Multiple sclerosis (MS) affects more than two million people worldwide. Providing care for MS patients differs from providing care for other illnesses due to the early onset of the disease, a varying illness progression, and because MS patients are predominantly female. This qualitative research study applied Pearlin’s Stress Process Model (SPM) to explore MS caregiving in a homogeneous group of caregiver/patient dyads. Qualitative interviews were conducted with both MS patients and their caregivers utilizing grounded theory to explore the MS caregiving phenomenon. Pearlin’s SPM was used to evaluate the qualitative data, which provided insight into the gendered nature of the …

Adam Smith And Sympathetic Cosmopolitanism, Maria Pia Paganelli Jan 2025

Adam Smith And Sympathetic Cosmopolitanism, Maria Pia Paganelli

Economics Faculty Research

Is cosmopolitanism something to explain or is it the lack of cosmopolitanism that needs explaining? Is cosmopolitanism natural or something we need to try to achieve? Is cosmopolitanism an end result or a starting point? The answer depends on the anthropological assumptions one makes. If human beings are assumed to be isolated individuals, then cosmopolitanism is something to explain, something to be taught, a possible end result. But if human beings are assumed to be intrinsically and naturally social, then cosmopolitanism may be a starting point and what needs to be explained is its absence.

I suggest that for Adam …

Covid-19 In The History Of Capitalism, Victor Wallis Jan 2025

Covid-19 In The History Of Capitalism, Victor Wallis

Faculty Works

The obvious role of capital in generating poverty, war, and environmental breakdown has not led to a parallel recognition of how deeply it shapes the ideology and practice of healthcare. Progressives view access to healthcare as a matter of “right,” but with rare exceptions they do not focus attention on the wider determinants of health policy – from the life-conditions that shape public health to the prevalence, in capitalist countries, of market-inspired remedies. Looking at the US experience and noting how capitalist priorities have permeated official policies toward Covid-19, this essay discusses how medical objections to these policies have been …

Optimizing Advance Care Planning: Leveraging An Electronic Medical Record Prompt To Impact Advance Directive Documentation, Annette L. Meares Jan 2025

Optimizing Advance Care Planning: Leveraging An Electronic Medical Record Prompt To Impact Advance Directive Documentation, Annette L. Meares

Doctor of Nursing Practice Scholarly Projects

Abstract

Background: Advance Directives (ADs) support patient-centered care by documenting preferences for future medical treatment. While the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) incentivizes AD documentation through billing codes, national adoption remains low.

Local Problem: A rural Northern Illinois primary care practice had electronic referral capabilities for ACP; however, referrals remained low and inconsistent during Medicare Annual Wellness Visits (AWVs), limiting opportunities for AD completion.

Methods: This quality improvement project targeted Medicare AWV patients without ADs documented in the electronic medical record (EMR). During a 10-week pre-intervention period, baseline data were collected. In the subsequent 10-week intervention phase, an …

Part 3: Virginia's Workforce: Understanding Apprentices, Dragas Center For Economic Analysis And Policy, Old Dominion University

State of the Commonwealth Reports

This chapter examines the state of apprenticeship programs in the United States and Virginia, assessing their role in the labor market. We begin with an overview of national apprenticeship policy, tracing major laws and initiatives that have influenced the system’s evolution and expansion. We then review trends in apprenticeship participation, highlighting the states that lead in registrations and program growth. The discussion pivots to Virginia, where we analyze current occupation, wage and demographic data, and regional apprenticeship examples that connect education and industry. Finally, we consider whether apprenticeships represent a sustainable and scalable solution to the Commonwealth’s workforce challenges.

Part 1: Virginia's Economy Slows As Challenges To Growth Rise, Dragas Center For Economic Analysis And Policy, Old Dominion University

State of the Commonwealth Reports

As we near the end of 2025, we now have sufficient evidence that economic activity has slowed in Virginia. The civilian labor force and the number of individuals reporting they are at work has fallen in 2025. Weekly continued unemployment claims, which capture individuals who are unemployed, looking for work, but have not found work, have been higher for each week of 2025 when compared to 2024. Job growth has continued, but the economy is buffeted by tariffs and declines in federal employment.

Renewable Energy And Economic Growth: Evidence From A Global Panel Data Analysis Of Advanced And Emerging Economies, Ryan A. Campbell

Soaring: A Journal of Undergraduate Research

This study assesses the impact of renewable energy consumption on economic growth using a global panel dataset of 136 advanced and emerging and developing economies. Drawing on classifications from the International Monetary Fund, it employs econometric modeling to analyze the long-term effects of renewable energy consumption on economic output and development, while also examining how returns differ based on a country's level of economic development. The results indicate that while renewable energy consumption initially incurs costs for all economies, emerging and developing economies generally experience more moderate returns compared to advanced economies, which ultimately realize greater economic benefits in the …

Constructing Connections: A Phenomenological Explanation Of Loneliness In First-Year Undergraduates, Natalie S. Byrd, Sophia C. Mccabe, Jessica R. Robinson Jan 2025

Constructing Connections: A Phenomenological Explanation Of Loneliness In First-Year Undergraduates, Natalie S. Byrd, Sophia C. Mccabe, Jessica R. Robinson

Soaring: A Journal of Undergraduate Research

Loneliness is a pervasive phenomenon among college students globally, which has been previously explored in qualitative research. "Friendsickness,” focused on the preoccupation with lost or changed pre-college friendships, is linked to heightened social concerns, discrepancies between expectations and experiences, and loneliness in college (Paul & Brier, 2001). Additionally, pre-college romantic and familial relationships can impact first-year college students' social adjustment and loneliness levels (Calderon Leon et al., 2022; Paul et al., 1998). Guided by social constructivist theory, this phenomenological study explores the lived experiences of eight undergraduate students at a small liberal arts college in the Northeast United States. This …

Restored Wetlands Show Rapid Vegetation Recovery And Substantial Surface-Water Expansion, Thilina D. Surasinghe, Yin-Hsuen Chen, Kunwar K. Singh

Center for Geospatial Science, Education & Analytics Faculty Publications

Ecological restoration is essential for improving the ecological integrity of degraded ecosystems to enhance ecosystem services and biodiversity. In this study, we assessed the effectiveness of wetland restoration on retired cranberry farms by analyzing vegetation recovery and surface-water dynamics using the enhanced vegetation index (EVI) and normalized difference water index (NDWI) derived from Sentinel-2 satellite imagery. To quantify temporal dynamics of both vegetation recovery and surface-water cover, we identified the spectral distinctions among restored wetland plant communities. Our results indicated the emergence of distinct plant communities upon restoration. Restored wetlands in general showed significant and progressive vegetation recovery and expanding …

Theorizing Gender And Social Movements Beyond The Binary, Nancy Whittier Jan 2025

Theorizing Gender And Social Movements Beyond The Binary, Nancy Whittier

Sociology: Faculty Books

This innovative Handbook examines how gender shapes social activism and is shaped by activism. With a unique interdisciplinary focus, it explores the effects of the gender binary on experiences of activism, considering how different movements negotiate and, at times, challenge these traditional conceptions. It then moves beyond the binary to explore how gender is challenged by contemporary movements.

Expert authors discuss the impact and limitations of the gender binary, using examples such as the MeToo movement to demonstrate how viewing men and women as separate, monolithic categories results in countless differences being overlooked. Chapters present a range of global and …

The Green Advantage: An Analysis Of Open Access Publications At A Mid-Sized University, Lisa M. Rose-Wiles, Maria A. Barca

Library Publications

Introduction: The escalating cost of journals, loss of access to research results, and mandates by funding agencies favor Open Access (OA). The suggestion that OA publications are cited more than those behind paywalls should appeal to faculty where citations are critical for promotion and tenure. Further, the option to publish Green OA without cost would be advantageous to faculty who lack financial support for OA publications.

Methods: We used data from Scopus to analyze field weighted citation counts (FWCI) for OA publications over 20 years in terms of OA type, document type, subject area, and subject normalized impact factor.

Results: …

Equity Implications Of The Unchanged Federal Minimum Wage Since 2009, Yali Pang Phd, Nakeina E. Douglas-Glenn Phd, Cameron Williams, Research Institute For Social Equity Rise

Research Institute for Social Equity

This year marks 16 years since the federal minimum wage was raised in 2009. It is the longest period in its history without any increase. Even though over 20 states increased their minimum wage rates in 2025, there are still 20 states adhering to the federal minimum wage of $7.25. While the minimum wage at the federal level and in many states has remained stagnant, the prices of all life essentials have continued to increase across the country, with $1 in July 2009 having the same buying power of $1.46 in July 2024. Today, an individual needs an hourly wage …

What Causes Democratic Backsliding In Latin America? A Comparative Case Study Of Brazil, Chile, El Salvador, And Costa Rica, Samantha Foshee

Honors Program Theses

This study examines the causes of democratic backsliding in Latin America, comparing Brazil, Chile, El Salvador, and Costa Rica. Events like the January 8th, 2023 riot in Brazil and the use of intimidation tactics by President Bukele in El Salvador demonstrate the erosion that these two countries have faced. On the other hand, Chile and Costa Rica have maintained stable democracies. This study aims to understand what caused these countries’ different paths by examining the levels of political polarization, party deterioration, citizen dissatisfaction, and the presence of populist leaders. Overall, it was found that polarization and party deterioration increase the …

Playing Empathy: The Impacts Of Theatre On Empathy, Isabelle J. Daoust Jan 2025

Playing Empathy: The Impacts Of Theatre On Empathy, Isabelle J. Daoust

Honors Program Theses

The purpose of this study is to address a gap in the literature regarding the relationship between theatre and empathy; specifically, investigating how varying levels of participation in theatre may influence cognitive and affective empathy. This study examines whether empathy can be fostered through mere observation of theatre or whether active participation yields greater effects. Twenty-eight undergraduate participants, all of whom attend a small liberal arts college in the United States, either participated in three theatre games or observed their fellow participants playing them. The results did not support the primary hypotheses, as most empathy-related measures showed no statistically significant …
