Rationing Hunger: The Gendered Consequences Of India's Public Distribution System, Krisha Silwal Apr 2025

Rationing Hunger: The Gendered Consequences Of India's Public Distribution System, Krisha Silwal

Audre Lorde Prize

This paper examines how the Public Distribution System (PDS) in India, while introduced to address hunger and food insecurity, displaces women from traditional farming, weakens their nutritional autonomy, and erases their cultural roles in food systems. The focus on subsidized rice and wheat benefits male landowners and excludes women, especially Dalit and Adivasi farmers, from agricultural decision-making. Drawing on a grassroots initiative led by Dalit women in Zaheerabad, the paper highlights how community-driven, decentralized food systems rooted in women’s knowledge can improve food security and restore autonomy. It calls for a reimagined PDS that centers women’s lived experiences and leadership.

The disparity between physicians' preparedness to treat people with disabilities (PWD) and the prevalence of disabilities is a critical healthcare issue. The 2022 Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System reported that over 25% of U.S. adults have a disability, yet many healthcare providers feel unprepared. A poll found that only 40.7% of 714 physicians were confident in providing quality care to PWD, while 61% of 600 surveyed PWD indicated that their providers needed more training. Additionally, only 36% of medical schools included disability education in their curricula, often focusing on brief simulations rather than immersive experiences. To effectively address the diverse …

The Masculine Way, Jessica Asuquo

be Still

This painting was conceptualized after a particularly impactful patient visit. During the visit, the patient described a traumatic event in greater detail, stating that the doctor and I were the first people he had ever spoken to about the event.

I felt both honored and disheartened by this statement. I was honored that this man trusted us with this knowledge. Still, I was immensely sad that he dealt with the trauma of this event alone for decades. I believe he released some of the grief, pain, anger, fear, and hurt when he shared his burden with us, and I will …

Race And Greek Mythology: An Analysis Of A Racialized Hierarchy In Literary And Artistic Depictions Of The Line Of Io In Archaic And Classical Greece, Angie Pierre

History & Classics Undergraduate Theses

Following the emergence of the Greek alphabet in 8th century B.C.E, Greece produced literary works which demonstrated contemporary beliefs, customs, and practices. Additionally, pottery during this era began to be more expressive. The use of geometric shapes and imagery from Egypt were later used to create stories and induce emotions in pottery. Following the Archaic period, the Classical era has produced a plethora of literary and artistic material that expands on material from the Archaic era while simultaneously providing commentary on its own period. While not in a consistent manner, an underlying theme within the art and literature of the …

Engagement In Generalist Social Work Practice: Exploring Conceptual Theory And Textbook Pedagogy, Alice C. Fischer Apr 2025

Engagement In Generalist Social Work Practice: Exploring Conceptual Theory And Textbook Pedagogy, Alice C. Fischer

Social Work Doctoral Dissertations

Social work has a distinctive orientation to engagement that sets it apart from other helping professions. Engagement occurs both at the beginning and throughout every stage of social work practice with client systems. Despite its inherent and almost synonymous nature with social work practice, the profession has found it challenging to establish a theoretical conceptualization of engagement in social work or a definition of engagement in social work.

This study explored existing literature to establish a construct of engagement and a description of its underlying concepts, variables, and attributes. The construct informed the development of a methodology for comparing how …

Caring Across Borders: Demographic Shifts And Migrant Care In Asean-Korea Dynamics, Saqib Fardan Ahmada, Wahid Nur Kartiko

Jurnal Ilmu Kesejahteraan Sosial

This article aims to examine the migration policies and migrant care in the context of relations between ASEAN Member States (AMS) and Korea. As Korea is dealing with an aging population, an increase in female labour force participation, and an ultra low fertility rate, caregiving, especially for the elderly, has become a pivotal issue. Besides, the traditional nuclear family structure, which has historically served as the primary caregiver for the elderly, is also losing its prominence. In such demographic shift, migrant care workers from AMS are filling the demand for caregiving in Korea, leading to a cross-border international migration from …

Natural disasters in Central Sulawesi in 2018 damaged the onion and cocoa farming sectors, which are the main sources of livelihood for the local communities. Post-disaster economic recovery requires sustainable empowerment programs, such as access to capital, agricultural technology, and training to enhance farmers’ capacity. BAZNAS collaborated with PT Sarana Multi Infrastruktur (SMI) through SMI’s CSR program to implement an empowerment initiative for onion farmers in Guntarano Village (Tanantovea Subdistrict, Donggala Regency) and Duyu Subdistrict (Tatanga Subdistrict, Palu City), as well as cocoa farmers in Tuva Village (Gumbasa Subdistrict, Sigi Regency), areas affected by the Central Sulawesi earthquake. Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs) play a critical role in advancing societal welfare. However, while their numbers have increased, public trust remains low, as NGOs are often perceived to lack the capacity to design and evaluate programs effectively and fail to engage local stakeholders (Bodja, 2006). Previous research has predominantly focused on NGOs' roles in enhancing community participation and social networks, overlooking the importance of program management and stakeholder relations. This article examines the development of program frameworks, program organization, and the involvement of local organizations in Yayasan Nurani Dunia, an NGO that focuses on community development and dedicated to program innovation. …

Gender Differences In Perceived Organizational Support Among Veterans With Posttraumatic Stress Disorder, Elizabeth Gomez Apr 2025

Gender Differences In Perceived Organizational Support Among Veterans With Posttraumatic Stress Disorder, Elizabeth Gomez

Dissertations

Posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is a well-studied issue within the U.S. military, with data showing military personnel face a higher risk of trauma than the civilian population. Many veterans and service members suffer from PTSD related to their military experiences (Renshaw, 2011). As research has largely focused on protective factors such as social and familial support, little attention has been given to organizational support (Meredith et al., 2011). Perceived organizational support (POS) refers to how individuals perceive the support they receive from their employers, with the military as the primary employer for veterans. This study was designed to explore whether …

With health facilities closed for non-emergent patients, telemental health therapy offered the possibility of support for those experiencing mental health challenges (Chiauzzi et al., 2020; Cooke et al., 2020; Karimi et al., 2022; E. C. Lee et al., 2023; Racine et al., 2020). While numerous past studies conducted over several years confirmed the efficacy of telemental health counseling (e.g., Feijt et al., 2020; Gloff et al., 2015; …

The overarching research question for my study was: What are the perceptions of school staff regarding school safety and the support students with mental health issues receive? I used a quantitative research method for my study, collecting data through surveys of teachers and administrators. The survey …

A Phenomenological Study Of Licensed Social Workers’ Conceptualization Of Shame In Adolescents With Substance Use Disorders, Brent A. Basile

Social Work Doctoral Dissertations

Shame is a self-conscious emotion that has been referred to as both a master and a hidden emotion. Sociological and psychological researchers have neglected shame, although it has seen a resurgence in the past 20 years as a topic for research. Shame heightens during adolescence, a transitional period that bridges childhood and adulthood and involves psychological, social, physiological, and neurobiological changes. Adolescent substance use leads to academic, health and mental health, peer, and family difficulties. Additionally, adolescent substance use is associated with the leading causes of death, including suicide, unintended injury, and violence. Adolescent substance use disorders impact the individual, …

Is There A Librarian In The House? Researching Federal And Virginia State Health Law, Andrew J. Christensen

Library Scholarship

Health law is a complex and diverse practice area, encompassing issues ranging from insurance law and patient privacy to medical malpractice and vaccine law. Researching health law thus entails a combination of primary and secondary resources, statutory and regulatory updates, and often a nuanced or multijurisdictional understanding of healthcare policy. For both career specialists and lawyers who are new to the field, finding accurate, current information on both federal and state-specific health laws is critical.

Luckily, the librarian is in. This guide highlights key resources and practical strategies for effectively researching federal and Virginia health law, tailored to legal practitioners …

Podcast Assessment, Theresa Ryan, Bernadette Quinn

Case studies: Digital Education

The MSc Event Management is a conversion MSc programme and so students may have very little knowledge or experience of the event sector when they first join the programme. For this, and for several other reasons, experiential learning is prioritised in this module. When we experienced the Covid 19 pandemic, activities like site visits, fieldtrips and guest lectures were severely curtailed or eliminated and we needed to find alternative ways of encouraging student-practitioner interactions. We thus changed our assessment practice to include a requirement for students to individually secure an interview with a practitioner on a particular topic, and to …

2nd Place Research Paper: Aquí Y Ahora: The Role Of Us Spanish-Language Tv News In Financial Vulnerability, Cintya Felix

Kevin and Tam Ross Undergraduate Research Prize

In today’s world, the news we watch often does more than inform us; it shapes our perceptions of security and the future. In this paper, I examine the extent to which an individual’s consumption of particular Spanish-speaking TV news channels contribute to their sense of financial vulnerability. Using an original data set of responses to the questions in the 2020 American National Election Studies (ANES), I find a moderately strong relationship between the television news channel Aquí y Ahora, and the degree to which they are worried about their financial situation. While it is true that various factors such …

College Students And Families Navigate Recovery From Alcohol And Other Drugs, Leah Pylate, Alisha M. Hardman, Lori Staton, Laura Downey, Joe D. Wilmoth

Journal of Rural Social Sciences

Rural universities provide unique opportunities for public health services. For some college students, the environment may threaten a person’s recovery from a substance use disorder, yet navigating college, relationships, and recovery is manageable through supportive initiatives funded by higher education. This qualitative study utilized semi-structured interviews to gather a family system perspective on the recovery process from alcohol or other drugs. Recruited through a southern university-sponsored Collegiate Recovery Program, interviews were conducted with 5 individuals in recovery and 14 of their family members. The findings of this exploratory study suggest that families need support in different ways, including building a …
