Voices From The Margins: Women Of Color On Diversity Policies And Workplace Culture, Aparna Kasturi May 2025

Voices From The Margins: Women Of Color On Diversity Policies And Workplace Culture, Aparna Kasturi

Electronic Theses, Projects, and Dissertations

Women of Color (WoC) in corporate leadership experience distinct problems that stem from the intersection of race, gender, and class. Despite the extensive implementation of diversity, equality, inclusion, and accessibility (DEIA) policies in companies, these initiatives often emphasize quantitative metrics over genuine lived experiences. Many of the DEIA policies seem cosmetic and do not tackle the fundamental challenges faced by WoC such as the "glass ceiling," "sticky floor," and exclusion from sponsorship networks; how the lack of an intersectional approach in policy development might overlook the subtle biases. By placing the voices and lived experiences of WoC at the center, …

What Is The Correlation Between 9-1-1 Emergency Psychiatric Calls In San Bernardino County And Mental Health Services, Lea M. Munoz

Electronic Theses, Projects, and Dissertations

It is important to address the mental health crisis in the United States to understand the effects it has on individuals, families, and communities and promote better access to mental health services. The mental health crisis has led to an increase in demand for mental health care and economically the U.S. has not been able to satisfy this demand. This paper raises awareness about the issue by emphasizing the need for better access to mental health, reducing the stigma in mental illness, building resilience in individuals, and connecting people to resources that will create a safer and more welcoming environment. …

Understanding Household Financial Stability: Examining The Effects Of Inflation And Income, Cyndy E. Gutierrez-Fierros May 2025

Understanding Household Financial Stability: Examining The Effects Of Inflation And Income, Cyndy E. Gutierrez-Fierros

Electronic Theses, Projects, and Dissertations

This study aims to investigate the impact of inflation on US household financial stability from 2013 to 2023. As inflation rises, individuals’ purchasing power erodes leading to influence economic behaviors. Behaviors such as spending, saving, and borrowing should be a priority concern in the US economy. Results of this study reveal that inflation does not affect financial well-being and its direct impact on household stability is statistically weak. Regression testing shows that income emerges as the most significant factor. Most noticeably income influences savings and debt management in a positive way. As per these results, economic policies should be focused …

Navigating Nagpra: Respecting The Indigenous Ancestors, Anjuli Latchmansingh, William Kennedy

Transformations: Presentation Slides

In this presentation we explain the importance of NAGPRA federal legislation and its critical importance regarding how institutions of research and learning interact with Indigenous peoples and their cultures in the United States. We then describe, in narrative format, the initial investigation process that is required, in accordance with NAGPRA law, if an institution possesses anything that may potentially be considered sacred to Indigenous ancestors. We will outline what we learned through this experience, and demonstrate how institutions of research and learning can use this legislation to acknowledge the past and ongoing offenses against local Indigenous populations, and strengthen relations …

Rhetorics Of Vigilance: Refracting Discourses In Technologies Of Self-Managed Health & Wellness, Haley Swartz May 2025

Rhetorics Of Vigilance: Refracting Discourses In Technologies Of Self-Managed Health & Wellness, Haley Swartz

All Dissertations

Rhetorics of Vigilance explores the limits of feminist health rhetorics by examining technologies that promote women’s self-managed health and wellness practices. By establishing a corpus of personal health technologies and associated texts including mobile health applications, pelvic floor training devices, and perimenopause information shared on social media, this dissertation analyzes how discourses refract––redirected and often distorted––to implicate women in persistent self-monitoring. Drawing from interdisciplinary scholarship on women’s health from feminist rhetorical studies, rhetorics of health and medicine, science and technology studies, and digital studies, I theorize rhetorics of vigilance as a framework through which women understand and interpret issues …

Operationalizing Quality Youth Leadership Programs Within The Context Of Summer Camps, Leslie E. Heffington May 2025

Operationalizing Quality Youth Leadership Programs Within The Context Of Summer Camps, Leslie E. Heffington

All Dissertations

Positive youth development (PYD) exists in a variety of out-of-school time settings. Research has demonstrated that PYD occurs when there is an alignment between ecological assets and individual capabilities (Lerner et al., 2005). Participation in youth programs can be a successful strategy for promoting PYD because they can offer youth relationships with supportive adults (Henderson, 2007) who provide opportunities for skill building and community connection (Lerner, 2004). More specifically, the camp setting has been shown to offer a variety of positive outcomes for youth by providing developmental opportunities across social, physical, cognitive, and spiritual domains of adolescent development (Garst et …

Toward The Application Of Natural Language Processing In Electronic Health Record Analysis For Taxonomy Development, Latoya Mcdonald May 2025

Toward The Application Of Natural Language Processing In Electronic Health Record Analysis For Taxonomy Development, Latoya Mcdonald

All Dissertations

Electronic health records (EHRs) are pivotal resources for nurse practice because they increase the timeliness and reliability of patient information at the point of care and support access by multiple healthcare providers and the individual patients themselves. However, it is widely recognized that data extraction from EHRs is challenging due to the variability in the language used in clinical care notes and the lack of standardized terminology across healthcare systems. The broad objective of this dissertation is to develop taxonomy-based classification models for nursing care by applying feature engineering approaches to EHRs that include nursing care of ostomy patients following …

All Dissertations

This study contributed solutions to the youth mental health crisis by providing effective options for mental health awareness training (MHAT) that can be utilized in youth sport for increasing mental health literacy (MHL) among adults. Widely implementing MHAT has the potential to improve youth mental health status through increased help-seeking behaviors by adults. This study first evaluated whether mental health status and MHL are correlated in a youth sport setting with significant results indicating that investing time and resources into MHAT is worthwhile. Next, two MHAT modules were evaluated to determine their effectiveness for increasing MHL among this audience, i.e., …

An Examination Of The Role Of Recreational Therapy In Forensic And Correctional Settings, Sarah R. Fischer May 2025

An Examination Of The Role Of Recreational Therapy In Forensic And Correctional Settings, Sarah R. Fischer

All Dissertations

The estimated prevalence of adults, age 18 and older, with serious mental illness (SMI) in the United States is approximately 6% (NIMH, 2022a). Having a mental illness places individuals at higher risk for arrest and incarceration (NAMI, n.d.b) where they receive treatment, including recreational therapy (RT) in state hospitals, jails or prisons. The purpose of this multi-method study was to gain a better understanding of the role of RT in treating adults with SMI in forensic and correctional settings. A non-standardized 122-item cross-sectional survey (n=49) was used to identify what interventions recreational therapists are using, for what intended outcomes; and …

Emergency Sheltering For Unhoused Populations During Extreme Winter Weather Events: A Comparison Between Guidance Documents And Local Planning, Shannon A. Bakke

Capstone Experience: Master of Public Health

In a world experiencing drastic climate changes, extreme winter weather is a present and future concern. Regardless of geographic location, extreme winter weather has detrimental effects on communities across the United States. Exposure to extreme winter weather may result in cold-related injuries or death, disproportionately impacting populations that spend more time outside, such as people experiencing homelessness. Gronlund concluded that there is "a higher risk of hypothermia, hyperthermia, and mortality among the homeless vs. non-homeless during periods of extreme heat or cold (Gronlund, 2018)." Communities across the United States routinely combat the effects of cold weather by implementing various disaster …

Tax Increment Financing: A History And Analysis Of Its Success And Failure, Justin Cederlof May 2025

Tax Increment Financing: A History And Analysis Of Its Success And Failure, Justin Cederlof

All Graduate Reports and Creative Projects, Fall 2023 to Present

Tax increment financing (TIF) is used by cities and towns to subsidize projects within their jurisdictions. The name derives from the growth in the tax base that a (re)development is theoretically responsible for. The increase in tax revenue is directed to funds to pay for the project. TIF is used in 49 U.S. states and each state has unique legislation for its use of it, though there are large similarities between states on how it’s implemented. Research suggests mixed results with whether or not the increase in the tax base is enough to pay off how much money went toward …

How Does Fiscal Decentralization Shape Corruption?, Sharandy G. Appiah May 2025

How Does Fiscal Decentralization Shape Corruption?, Sharandy G. Appiah

All Graduate Reports and Creative Projects, Fall 2023 to Present

In this paper, I offer a comprehensive review of the impact of fiscal decentralization on corruption. Corruption has been a big hindrance to development, it undermines the inflow of foreign direct investment and even affects education. The literature on fiscal decentralization and corruption has conventionally argued that fiscal autonomy for local officials lowers corruption whereas most recent papers have found that fiscal decentralization increases corruption. I identify four possible pathways through which fiscal decentralization affects corruption and address possible reasons for the difference in findings in the literature. Understanding the mechanisms through which fiscal decentralization shapes corruption at the national …

“Gang, We Have A Mystery On Our Hands!”: A Folkloristic Approach To Conspiracy Thinking In Scooby-Doo! Mystery Incorporated, Sydney K. Brooks May 2025

“Gang, We Have A Mystery On Our Hands!”: A Folkloristic Approach To Conspiracy Thinking In Scooby-Doo! Mystery Incorporated, Sydney K. Brooks

All Graduate Reports and Creative Projects, Fall 2023 to Present

In this thesis I examined how the 2010 children’s television show Scooby-Doo! Mystery Incorporated both utilizes and critiques conspiracy, embedded within its mystery-solving structure. Through a close analysis of the members of the gang—Fred, Daphne, Velma, Shaggy, and Scooby-Doo—I broke down their individual behaviors, interactions, and contributions to conspiratorial belief. I then transitioned into a case study of the episode “Where Stalks the Scarebear,” showcasing its connection to larger real-world conspiracy narratives, particularly those related to corporate and environmental cover-ups. Finally, I examined the show as a complete narrative, reflecting on its complex, serial exploration of conspiracy through the framework …

Correlative Assessment Of Demographic Markers And Health Insurance On Self-Reported Health Status, Ismat Ara Sharin Sajnee May 2025

Correlative Assessment Of Demographic Markers And Health Insurance On Self-Reported Health Status, Ismat Ara Sharin Sajnee

All Graduate Reports and Creative Projects, Fall 2023 to Present

This study investigates whether known demographic groups report poorer health status even after adjusting for health insurance. Research analyzes the factors that correlate with poor reported health status and demographic markers associated with inequitable healthcare access. Sealy-Jefferson et al. (2015) explores the rate of health insurance as a primary mechanism to mitigate the financial risk of accessing health care, but significant racial and ethnic health disparities continue to exist among insured populations.

This study uses pooled cross-sectional data from the National Health Interview Survey (NHIS) from 2019 to 2023 and simple linear regression models to examine the relationship between demographic …

“Floptok Is Not A Trend. It’S A Lifestyle”: Camp, Performativity, And Community Dynamics In An Adolescent Tiktok Subculture, Drake Hansen

All Graduate Reports and Creative Projects, Fall 2023 to Present

Floptok is an online meme-sharing community or subculture that began to take shape in 2021, united by a particular sensibility and set of memetic materials. To outsiders, Floptok is seen as a loud, brash, and often abrasive community whose memes, characterized by low-quality audio and video, often feature “icons”—a range of invented characters and real people—and audio of pop songs heavily edited to feature hypersexual lyrics from the rapper CupcakKe, as well as portions of the 2019 Chinese pop song “Yěhuāxiāng.” This thesis built on scholarship in digital and young people’s folklore in an ethnographic case study of Floptok’s humor …

The Impact On Life-Cycle Consumption, Saving, Labor Supply, And On Bequests When Individuals Possess Time-Inconsistent Preferences, Barna Bose May 2025

The Impact On Life-Cycle Consumption, Saving, Labor Supply, And On Bequests When Individuals Possess Time-Inconsistent Preferences, Barna Bose

All Graduate Reports and Creative Projects, Fall 2023 to Present

This study examines how the presence of time-inconsistent preferences affects a representative individual's decisions about how much to consume, to save, and how intensively to work, in addition to the size of a bequest to leave behind at death. The model is used to analyze the behavior of both time-inconsistent individuals (characterized by a hyperbolic discount function) and the behavior of time-consistent individuals (characterized by an exponential discount function). The model demonstrates how these two representative types of individuals make intertemporal choices over time. While the model distinguishes between time-inconsistent and time-consistent individuals with respect to using alternative discount functions, …

Tuning Out The Dark: Music As A Defense And Folk Solution, Melanie Kimball May 2025

Tuning Out The Dark: Music As A Defense And Folk Solution, Melanie Kimball

All Graduate Reports and Creative Projects, Fall 2023 to Present

Music across cultures and throughout history is a tool for engaging with the supernatural. It shares similarities with apotropaic magic. Through research and ethnographic fieldwork, I argued that even in modern times, individuals use music as an apotropaic remedy for fear and negative emotions. These remedies reflect strategies identified by Jeannie Thomas, including companionship, magical substance, neutralization, and displacement. Modern apotropaic music regulates emotions, re-establishes personal relationships, creates safe environments, and provides a means of control.

Contributors used music to combat various negative feelings, selecting genres that matched their emotional needs. In the absence of family and friends, music reaffirmed …

The Desert Shall Rejoice: Lds Relational Values And Multispecies Justice In The Intermountain West, Sarah A. Woodbury

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Fall 2023 to Present

In the American West, climate change is shifting weather and climate patterns in ways that may dramatically change lands, livelihoods, and communities. In the face of these threats, conservationists and local communities must work collaboratively to ensure that environmental and human communities are healthy enough to weather approaching shifts. Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saint (LDS) values, practices, and histories strongly influence the Intermountain West, yet there is little research on LDS environmental values and perceptions. This study seeks to answer questions that work in this gap. It documents the knowledge and values of communities in the Intermountain West …

Changing Climate, Changing Minds: Social Media's Role In Shifting Climate Change Beliefs, Rachel M. Clarke May 2025

Changing Climate, Changing Minds: Social Media's Role In Shifting Climate Change Beliefs, Rachel M. Clarke

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Fall 2023 to Present

This study explores how social media messages influence individual beliefs, attitudes and behaviors related to climate change. Despite widespread exposure to social media, there is concern about its effectiveness in shaping beliefs and actions regarding climate adaptation and mitigation. Research indicates that many people in the United States show limited concern for climate change, underscoring the need for targeted communication strategies. By designing and implementing a survey experiment with random participants within the United States, this study examines how sharing first- person experiences of climate-related hazards on social media affects opinions about climate change, in comparison to traditional third-person news …

The Impact Of Visually Presented Distractor Taboo Words During A Bilateral Attention Task, Chloe Taylor May 2025

The Impact Of Visually Presented Distractor Taboo Words During A Bilateral Attention Task, Chloe Taylor

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Fall 2023 to Present

Attention is a limited resource. Some events are able to capture one’s attention more efficiently than others, such as swear or sexual words. These events have preferential access to attentional resources and increase our arousal levels due to the activity of a neurotransmitter called norepinephrine. We investigate how well swear/sexual words capture peoples’ attention and interpret these effects in terms of norepinephrine activity.

Participants performed a visual task where they responded to different shapes presented while ignoring neutral or swear/sexual words presented on opposing sides of the computer screen.

Participants were significantly more inaccurate in identifying the shape present when …

Declining Democracy Amid Historical Legacies: Democratization Across The Maghreb, Jacob Sagers May 2025

Declining Democracy Amid Historical Legacies: Democratization Across The Maghreb, Jacob Sagers

Undergraduate Honors Capstone Projects

Institutions and security forces are vital in determining democratization’s success or failure, but how do they interact with civilians to counteract, or support, existing regimes? Hopes for a fourth wave of democratization were dismantled over the past decade as the Arab uprisings have had inconclusive results, posing a threat to the ideological basis for U.S. foreign policy and Western states' legitimacy. Broad economic and Western foreign policies applied worldwide over the past few decades have also been ineffective at supporting this process and producing sustainable democratic transitions. But what specifically about these factors in the Maghreb gave way to Tunisia’s …
