An Empirical Analysis Of The Status Of Income Inequality New England In 2022, Aidan Wilkinson May 2024

An Empirical Analysis Of The Status Of Income Inequality New England In 2022, Aidan Wilkinson

Empirical Economic Bulletin, An Undergraduate Journal

This paper investigates the status of income inequality within the New England states in 2022. The empirical analysis conducted within this paper uses a similar model within Fadi Fawaz et al. for high income countries to analyze and predict the Gini coefficient within the six New England States. More specifically, the model that is tested analyzes monthly unemployment rate, the labor force participation rate, welfare spending, and the top 1% wealth distribution. The results show that Rhode Island and Maine Gini indexes could only be described by the top 1% wealth distribution and welfare spending, respectively. We also find that …

Digital Currencies And Macroeconomic Performance: A Global Perspective, Tirimisiyu F. Oloko, Ahamuefula E. Ogbonna, Idris A. Adediran

Bulletin of Monetary Economics and Banking

In this study, we explore the IS-LM-BP framework in analysing the effect of digital currencies on macroeconomic performance from a global perspective. We augment the global macroeconomic dataset by Mohaddes and Raissi (2020) with digital currencies, and analyse the relationship between 2010Q1 and 2019Q4. Overall, we find digital currencies to have significantly positive short-run and no long-run impact on global output, inflation rate, interest rate, and equity stock return. Our results suggest that digital currencies have enhanced global macroeconomic performance, on average. Thus, we recommend that appropriate regulations, rather than an outright ban on digital currencies, should be implemented.

When Cultural Expressions Exploited By The Right-Wing Groups: A Comparative Analysis Between The Case Of Indonesia And Germany, Yosua Praditya May 2024

When Cultural Expressions Exploited By The Right-Wing Groups: A Comparative Analysis Between The Case Of Indonesia And Germany, Yosua Praditya

Journal of Terrorism Studies

Culture is the expression of life that has been held by society for centuries, but it is possible for it to be hijacked by right-wing groups for their own purposes. Since it is an essential component in the formation of collective identities, it is misappropriated by the group to cultivate its ideology and to fragment social cohesion. The case between Indonesia and Germany has been chosen to analyse the similarities of right-wing characters in exploiting culture, including music, through the lens of Margareth Archer's cultural theory and Ulrich Beck's risk society theory, and later compared using Midlarsky’s extremism perspective. …

Psychology Faculty Articles and Research

Adverse early-life experiences (ELA) affect a majority of the world's children. Whereas the enduring impact of ELA on cognitive and emotional health is established, there are no tools to predict vulnerability to ELA consequences in an individual child. Epigenetic markers including peripheral-cell DNA-methylation profiles may encode ELA and provide predictive outcome markers, yet the interindividual variance of the human genome and rapid changes in DNA methylation in childhood pose significant challenges. Hoping to mitigate these challenges we examined the relation of several ELA dimensions to DNA methylation changes and outcome using a within-subject longitudinal design and a high methylation-change threshold. …

A Naturalistic Examination Of Dietary Lapses In Low-Income, Treatment-Seeking Families With Obesity, Anne Claire Grammer

Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations

Socioeconomic disparities in childhood obesity prevalence and treatment response are well-documented and may be partially explained by moments of non-adherence to dietary intentions (i.e., dietary lapses). The current study employed a naturalistic design to characterize the frequency and momentary context of parent dietary lapses and explore their effects on child dietary lapses and parent-child weight change among low-income families participating in 3-month family-based behavioral obesity treatment (FBT). 19 parent-child dyads completed 3 separate 1-week periods of ecological momentary assessment to examine socioenvironmental and intrapersonal cues of parent dietary lapses as well as the frequency of parent-child dietary lapses throughout 3-month …

Capital Flow And Bank Lending Channels In A Small Open Economy: Evidence From Indonesia, Advis Budiman, Solikin M. Juhro, Sugiharso Safuan

Bulletin of Monetary Economics and Banking

This paper investigates the implication of macro-financial linkages to explain the interaction of the financial and business cycles as the primary contributor to understanding the fluctuations in the Indonesian economy. It attempts to capture the interaction of the global financial and domestic business cycles through portfolio flow by incorporating investor behavior through a preference for domestic asset classes. Furthermore, due to information asymmetries between lenders and borrowers, we include the monitoring cost to explain the transaction cost in the credit market as a factor that drives macroeconomic fluctuations. Our findings demonstrate how financial imperfections can amplify the impact of global …

Trade Uncertainty And Bank Credit Growth: Evidence From China And The European Union Countries, Nazrul Hazizi Noordin, Mohamed Eskandar Shah Mohd. Rasid

Bulletin of Monetary Economics and Banking

This paper examines the relationship between trade uncertainty and bank lending using a sample of commercial banks in China and the European Union (EU) countries. Using a sample of commercial banks in China and the European Union (EU) countries during the period of heightened trade uncertainty from 2017Q1 to 2021Q3 measured by Ahir et al.’s (2018) World Trade Uncertainty (WTU) index, we show that trade uncertainty slows bank credit growth. We find no significant difference in the lending response to trade uncertainty between Chinese and EU banks. Our additional analyses indicate that the credit-reducing effect of trade uncertainty is stronger …

What Gives? Trust, Risk, Altruism, And Reciprocity Across 76 Countries, Sherwin Mosavat

Master's Theses

Abstract:

The decades-long literature pertaining to gender-specific preferences lies at the intersection of economics and psychology with a primary focus on the correlation between economic development and gender-specific preferences. Better understanding of this correlation has helped researchers understand how individuals make decisions for their education, finances, and occupation. Falk & Hermle (2018) assess the correlation between GDP and various gender-specific preferences including trust, risk, altruism, and reciprocity. In order to better understand the relationship between economic development and gender-specific preferences, I expand on the Falk & Hermle 2018 framework by introducing new macroeconomic, prosocial, and cultural variables as additional explanatory …

The Impact Of Age On Second Language Vocabulary Learning, Steven J. Dessenberger May 2024

The Impact Of Age On Second Language Vocabulary Learning, Steven J. Dessenberger

Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations

Second language (L2) vocabulary learning is challenging for many would-be language learners, regardless of their cognitive abilities. The volume of to be learned vocabulary can be a roadblock to language fluency (Nation, 2006), especially for older adults who have diminished memory capabilities due to age-related memory decline, a degradation in our ability to remember information that naturally occurs as we age (Salthouse, 2009; Schaie, 1993). The process of L2 vocabulary acquisition can be separated into three components, the native language (L1) meaning of the new word (cat), the new L2 word form itself (gato) and the connection between the new …

The Nuanced Relationship Between Mindfulness, Racial Prejudice, And Policy Support, Jared Michael Cutler May 2024

The Nuanced Relationship Between Mindfulness, Racial Prejudice, And Policy Support, Jared Michael Cutler

Dissertations and Theses

Researchers have investigated the relationship between mindfulness and prejudice, although the findings have been somewhat inconsistent. Two broad factors may be responsible for these mixed findings: different conceptualizations of mindfulness across studies, and ideological differences among participants. Attention monitoring and acceptance, together, are proposed to be responsible for the psychological benefits of mindfulness, including reduced emotion rumination. Attention alone, however, strengthens rumination, which predicts prejudice. Additionally, prejudice hinders the endorsement of equitable policy. As such, mindfulness measures and interventions that capture attention alone, then, may be positively related to prejudice and negatively associated with support for equitable policy, whereas mindfulness …

Exploring Consumer Value Of Certified Sustainability Labels Of Local, Independent Versus National Coffee Brands, Mary Olivia H. Broussard

LSU Master's Theses

Local, oftentimes independent, coffee shops in the US now measure over 38,000. These shops must differentiate themselves from chain coffee brands in order to compete in the bagged coffee market. Research shows consumers value certified labels, and these labels have the potential to help differentiate independent shops. This paper will look at coffee drinkers’ willingness to pay for certifications (Fairtrade, USDA Organic, Rainforest Alliance, Carbon Trust) and how it differs between national brands (Dunkin, Folgers, Starbucks) and a local provider specified by the individual respondent. Data collection took place in spring of 2024. Results indicated a preference for branded bagged …

Streets Are For People! Livable Streets 2.0 And Five Decades Of The Conflict, Power And Promise Of Our Streets, Bruce Appleyard

PSU Transportation Seminars

Streets constitute the majority of our urban public spaces, yet we struggle everyday with how they should be designed and operated for travel, safety, and livability. In 1969, when Dr. Bruce Appleyard was 4 years old, he was hit by a car and nearly killed. Around that time his father, Donald Appleyard, started work on what would become Livable Streets, published in 1981 – a ground-breaking and seminal work, the product of more than a decade of rigorous research and thoughtful analysis that would uncover the ill effects of traffic and laying out the seminal arguments that streets are for …

Dangerous Ambition: Character Analysis Of Major General Horatio Gates, Harold Allen Skinner Jr. May 2024

Dangerous Ambition: Character Analysis Of Major General Horatio Gates, Harold Allen Skinner Jr.

Bound Away: The Liberty Journal of History

Historian Robert Middlekauff describes Revolutionary War-era America as a society of the twice-born, people profoundly influenced by both radical English Whig ideology and the reformed Protestantism of the Great Awakening.[1] Historians have studied the influence of Christianity on many of the leading figures of the American Revolution, with the notable exception of Major General Horatio Gates. Gates’ military career presents a paradox to military historians: how could the victor at Saratoga in 1778 suffer ignominious defeat at Camden in August 1780? This paper will argue that Horatio Gates’ misfortunes during the American Revolution were due principally to his unregenerate …
