Cultural Identity Development, Acculturation, And Unhealthy Risky Behaviors Among Adolescents Of Latino Origin: A Secondary Data Analysis., Arielis V. Perez Arias

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Ethnic identity, a cultural identity component, and acculturation strategies (also known as acculturation patterns) play a significant role in the lives of Latino adolescents in the U.S. and have been associated with unhealthy risk behaviors (URBs). However, research has yet to fully understand the complex relationship between ethnic identity, acculturation strategies, and certain URBs such as fighting involvement and alcohol use. The purpose of this study was to add to the scant research by examining the association between Latino adolescents’ ethnic identity, and acculturation strategies and their impact on Latino youth’ fighting involvement and alcohol use. This study employed correlation …

The Discursive Representations Of Africanness And Blackness In Chinese Cyberspace : A Critical Discourse-Historical Analysis, Jiapei Gu

Lingnan Theses (MPhil & PhD)

Recent years have seen deepened Sino-African ties. However, unlike friendly rhetoric at the state level, racial issues at the individual level are becoming increasingly salient. This study aims to enrich our current understanding of racial issues in China by examining the digital discursive representations of Africanness and Blackness produced by Chinese Weibo users. It investigates three African/Black people-related racial occurrences in China from 2020 to 2021. Those include the release of the draft of the Permanent Residence Law for Foreigners in 2020, the Okonkwonwoye case, where Okonkwonwoye physically assaulted a nurse during quarantine in 2020, and the Abdulmatten murder case …

Observing Cairene Narratives And Subjectivities Towards Covid-19: Reflections On The First Year Of The Pandemic, Sarra Moneir

Future Journal of Social Science

Theoretical and methodological toolkits already existing in the field of political science and social science in the grand sense have been challenged by the tremendous impacts of waves and movements of social change since 2010 in the Arab Region. While political and social scientists were, and still remain, engaged in unravelling questions of how to apprehend the forms of social movements (re-)born, not just in the Arab world but also through the Occupy movements in the US and Europe, they soon had to redirect their focus on issues of migration and refugees, only to find themselves once again confronted with …

Back To The Future? How The Global Powers And The Local Militias Hindered Un Multi-Dimensional Mediation In The Libyan And Syrian Civil Wars After 2011, Ahmed S. Mahdi, Melissia Shapib, Noura Gamie

Future Journal of Social Science

UN mediation efforts in the Libyan and Syrian civil wars, which followed the Arab Revolutions of 2011, were hampered by the great power intervention, and by the belligerents' insistence on solving the problem through military victory instead of negotiation. There is a shortage in the literature which examines an alternative, or how UN mediation can be improved. One of the few models to assess, and improve, UN mediation in civil wars is the so-called Kane Model (2022). Using the model presented by Kane to assess the procedures of a powerful UN mediation process in internationalized civil wars, this paper argues …

It also searches for clarifying the convergent and divergent zones that could help in finding, analyzing and criticizing the basic concepts on which arguments and debates are constructed. This study concluded that the differences between the Islamic and the Western perspective are a human requirement for acquainting and integrating based on a crucial notion, which is identity. Identity is treated in details in many discourses and occupies a large place in the Western literature on …

Contestation And Consensus Over Davutoğlu’S Conception Of Turkish Regional Power Role In The Middle East (2002-2016), Shaimaa Magued

Future Journal of Social Science

In light of ebbs and flows in Turkish foreign policy in the Middle East, this study examines intra-elite disagreement and consensus over former Turkish Minister of Foreign Affairs and Prime Minister Ahmet Davutoğlu’s conception of regional power role since 2002 until 2016. While National Role Conception (NRC) literature has discounted intra-elite disagreements and variations, this study unravels contestations over Turkish regional power role within the AKP leadership and disagreements among the state bureaucracy, the opposition, and civil society from 2002 until Davutoğlu’s resignation in 2016. Building on factors of national role analysis, this study argues that Davutoğlu’s conception of regional …

Optimizing Associative Memory In Autistic And Non-Autistic Adults: Retrieval Practice, Post-Retrieval Feedback, And Gesture, Brianna E. Cairney

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Associative memory—or the ability to form a memory representation linking two previously unrelated concepts—is a critical aspect of learning. This work provides insight into strategies that can be used to support associative memory, their underlying mechanisms, and their effectiveness in autistic and non-autistic learners. Chapter 1 demonstrates that iconic gestures can be used as a tool to enhance associative memory by increasing word concreteness and imageability. This effect was eliminated when the iconic gestures were interspersed with ambiguous nonsense gestures, suggesting a boundary on these benefits that depends on listener expectations regarding gesture clarity. However, it remains unknown whether gestures …

Kompost*Klang*Küche*: Telematic Worlding With Glitch, Hannah Vyborg Walter, Robert Torche, Cedric Spindler, Eric Larrieux, Patrick Muller

Journal of Network Music and Arts

This paper explores concepts and practices of telematic performances, particularly through the lens of the project kompost*klang*küche*. It emphasizes spatial discontinuity within networked artistic collaborations, as opposed to immersive continuity.

Telematic performance formats utilize network technologies to facilitate low latency artistic endeavors across geographical divides, creating a complex interplay between local, remote, and intermediary spaces. In this context, we interpret spatial configurations from a phenomenological point of view as telematic SPACE in which technical components are in place in three spaces (local, remote and intermediary space) while practiced, embodied and inhabited in an anthropological space, where the overlay and dynamics …

How To Be In Two Places At Once: A Search For The Immersive Experience In Renaissance Music And Visual Arts., Andrew Hallock Jul 2024

How To Be In Two Places At Once: A Search For The Immersive Experience In Renaissance Music And Visual Arts., Andrew Hallock

Journal of Network Music and Arts

Immersion is a hot topic, but it is often invoked in a vague or shallow way. This essay aims to arrive at a more nuanced consideration of the immersive experience by presenting some perhaps surprising arguments from the past—from Renaissance music and visual arts—drawing parallels with our own time, and positing that the Network Arts can take inspiration from this history to enhance its own immersive endeavours. Four interrelated topics serve as the basis for this investigation: miniature devotionalia, polyphonic canons, anamorphic puzzles, and early cosmology. By using perspective to disclose hidden meanings, ideas, and realities, these varied practices draw …

“Who All Gon Be There?”: On Blackness, Transness, And K-12 Pedagogies For [Black] Trans Futures, Shea W. Martin

Journal of Queer and Trans Studies in Education

Grounded in trans-of-color critique and Black trans studies, this theoretical meditation reckons with the impossibility of Black trans safety, recognition, and futurity within our U.S. K-12 educational landscape. Situated in a “post-Transgender Tipping Point” sociopolitical landscape, I explore how these limitations contribute to Black trans youth’s disparate experiences in today’s schools, particularly with attention to the [in]effectiveness of existing queer and trans pedagogies. In an attempt to locate what is deemed possible for Black trans youth in imagined educational futures, I discuss trends within select K-12 trans pedagogical scholarship through which I explore questions related to authorship, reflexivity, and intersectional …

Investigating The Role Of Betrayal Blindness Between High Betrayal Trauma And Dating Violence Among Young Mothers Maltreated As Children, Lauren Catherine Wallace

Theses and Dissertations

Young mothers experience greater rates of dating violence (DV) victimization and perpetration compared to their non-parenting, female peers as well as older mothers (Joly & Connolly, 2016). Child maltreatment is a salient predictor of DV victimization and perpetration (Li et al., 2019; Murphy et al., 2020). According to Betrayal Trauma Theory (BTT), child maltreatment perpetrated by a close loved one, such as a parent or primary caregiver, is defined as a high betrayal trauma (Freyd, 1996). Young mothers who experienced a high betrayal trauma may endorse betrayal blindness as a way to cope with abuse from their caregiver (Freyd & …
