The Paradoxical Policies, Politics Of Tastes, And Classic Indonesian Exploitation Cinema Of The New Order Regime, Ekky Imanjaya
The Paradoxical Policies, Politics Of Tastes, And Classic Indonesian Exploitation Cinema Of The New Order Regime, Ekky Imanjaya
Jurnal Wacana Politik
Although the New Order Regime (1966-1998) was widely known for its strict censorship and government control, there was a simultaneous rise in producing exploitation films with graphic and provocative images. This kind of cinema was exported internationally in the 1980s and re-released in the 2000s by transnational DVD distributors. This article analyzed the transformation of exploitation films, which were disregarded and undervalued by the Government, cultural elites, and cinema critics. It explored how these films became a battleground for the politics of taste and resulted in a series of contradictions within the political policies of the New Order. The study …

Supporting Students’ Physical Activity Self-Efficacy Within High School Physical Education, Ken Murfay, Aaron Beighle, Heather Erwin, Erin Aiello, Sarah Pyszczynski
Supporting Students’ Physical Activity Self-Efficacy Within High School Physical Education, Ken Murfay, Aaron Beighle, Heather Erwin, Erin Aiello, Sarah Pyszczynski
International Journal of Physical Activity and Health
Research examining physical activity (PA) is significant because of the known benefits of PA. Studying high school (HS) students is particularly important due to the consistent decline in PA as students age. One strategy to increase PA is to increase someone’s self-efficacy (confidence) to be physically active which is commonly positively associated with PA. Most of the research on how to support physical activity self-efficacy (PASE) comes from outside-of-school interventions with minimal literature on how to support students’ PASE within HS physical education (PE). This study attempted to identify and share practices that current HS PE teachers were implementing to …

The 2021 Kansas Rural Grocery Survey: Revaluating Extension’S Role In Rural Grocery Issues, Jacob A. Miller-Klugesherz, Jessica Ramirez, Rial Carver, Erica Blair, Leah J. Tsoodle, Lauren Scheufler
Journal of Extension
Kansas State University’s Rural Grocery Initiative, housed under research and extension, surveyed rural Kansas grocery stores in 2021 (N = 48). This is the second RGI survey, following up on the ownership and customer surveys in 2008. This survey broadly assesses owner characteristics, store features, and challenges. Using descriptive and thematic analyses, we identified two topline conclusions for grocers and their respective Extension services. First, grocers need to identify transition plans earlier and more often. Second, grocers can overcome competition and distribution challenges by diversifying their sourcing, supply, and offerings.

This paper explores humanitarian natural disaster response and recovery through an ecopsychological lens. The author proposes an ecopsychological approach to humanitarian natural disaster response and recovery to (that?) addresses structural and personnel challenges typical of mainstream humanitarian disaster response. Three main threads inform this proposed ecopsychological natural disaster framework. First, exploreing the roots of colonization in disaster contexts and offering different ways of knowing through Indigenous perspectives and traditional ecological knowledge. Second, examineing grief experienced by humanitarian workers. Third, offering ecopsychological tools and healing modalities to support healing and resiliency for humanitarian workers and communities on the frontlines of natural …

Ecopoetry As Mind Into Matter: Some Educational Possibilities
Ecopoetry As Mind Into Matter: Some Educational Possibilities
The International Journal of Ecopsychology (IJE)
In part, this work draws on the revisioning of curriculum in the context of the climate crisis that occupies Chapter 8 of the author’s book on Sense of Place, Identity, and the Revisioning of Curriculum (2023: Springer Nature). The focus here is the “genre” of ecopoetry, described by Walton (2018) as “contributing to the task of repairing divisions between humanity and the ecosystems that constitute and support us” (p. 393). As a response to the Anthropocene, ecopoetry is potentially polemical and activist. However, as it is argued, it can also operate in more covert means by modelling ways in which …

No. 02: Leveraging Food Remittances For Enhanced Food Security In Urban Africa, Jonathan Crush
Migration and Food Security (MiFOOD) Network
This policy brief highlights the critical yet underexplored role of food remittances in enhancing food security across Africa. While global attention has predominantly focused on cash remittances and their economic impacts, food remittances – defined as the transfer of foodstuffs by migrants to their home regions – play a vital role in ensuring the availability, accessibility, and stability of food supplies for both rural and urban households. These remittances help bridge the food security gap between urban and rural areas, with food produced in rural regions supporting the nutritional needs of family members in cities. The reciprocal flow of resources, …

Impact Of A Suicide Prevention Learning Module For Firearm Training Courses In Louisiana, Claire Houtsma, Lauren Reyes, Katherine Macwilliams, Gala True
School of Medicine Faculty Publications
Background: Firearm suicide is a leading cause of death in the United States. Suicide prevention experts have advocated for upstream interventions that can be implemented prior to the development of suicidal thoughts, particularly those that focus on lethal means safety (LMS; e.g., increasing secure firearm storage). To reach firearm owners with LMS messaging, researchers have developed suicide prevention training content which can be incorporated into firearm training courses. However, no study to date has evaluated impact of such training on firearm course students’ subsequent knowledge, attitudes, and openness related to secure firearm storage. Thus, the current study sought to examine …

INTRODUCTION: Structural racism plays a major role in reproductive health inequities. Colorism, discrimination based on skin color, may profoundly impact reproductive health access and service delivery. However, quantitative research in this area is limited.
METHODS: We administered an online survey of women (n = 1,299) aged 18-44 from Harris County, Texas to assess the relationship between skin color discrimination and reproductive health service avoidance. The survey included questions on demographics, self-reported skin tone, and dichotomous measures of previous discrimination experiences and avoidance of care because of perceived discrimination. Binary logistic regression was used to examine whether race/ethnicity, skin tone, and …

Imposter Participants In Online Qualitative Interviews: A Protocol For Trauma-Informed And Equitable Decision-Making, L. B. Klein, Caro Cruys
The Qualitative Report
Imposter participants are an emerging concern in qualitative research due to the recent increase in online recruitment and virtual interviews. Unfortunately, there is limited guidance on how to address imposter participants in an equitable, trauma-informed way. To bridge this gap, we share imposter participant red flags, challenges, and a protocol that provides questions to ask and possible activities to engage in throughout the research process from conceptualization through findings dissemination. We ground this guidance in examples from our recent study with LGBTQ+ (e.g., lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer) survivors of sexual and intimate partner violence.

Expanding On The Factor Structure And Construct Validity Of The Short-Term Assessment Of Risk And Treatability (Start), Haomin Chen
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Research finds better reentry/recidivism program outcome when individuals receive service that matches their risks and needs. It is thus essential to measure recidivism risks and needs appropriately. The Short-Term Assessment of Risk and Treatability (START) is a clinically-oriented instrument that assesses risks of future violence/offending and identifies areas for treatment. We see its potential use as an assessment tool for reentry/recidivism programming. More empirical evidence is needed to identify the psychometric properties of the instrument in this setting before it may be used in practice. The current thesis explored the factor structure of the START strengths and vulnerabilities scales using …

Nationalism And The Federal State’S Agricultural Policies; The Politics Of Cassava In Zambia, 1953-1963, Kaluba Jickson Chama
Zambia Social Science Journal
During the Federal era, cassava played an important role in political mobilisation in Luapula Province. Nonetheless, the crop has seldom received attention in the otherwise rich historiography on African nationalism and anti-Federation struggle in present-day Zambia. Drawing on archival sources and oral history, and a reading of secondary sources, this article attempts to contribute to the historiography of cassava in Zambia and its contribution to the nationalist cause. The article examines the position of cassava in political mobilisation by nationalist politicians. It explores the link between the politics of cassava and those of nationalism. This article’s key argument is that …
