What Freedom? Freedom-A Disease Without Cure. Slavoj Žižek. London: Bloomsbury Academic. 2023. Pp. 328., Edward Sankowski, Betty J. Harris

International Dialogue

Slavoj Žižek's outpouring of books continues, including the volume, Freedom-A Disease Without Cure (2023). The title is somber, but the contents do not signal an unrelievedly depressed attitude on the part of the author. Rather, the book manifests expanding curiosity and far-reaching originality. That is, however, supplemented by some self-criticism, e.g., when the author broods about the apathy in himself and others that he claims is a result of the hyperactivity enjoined by and observed in contemporary capitalism. We hope to go beyond critical interpretation and evaluation of Žižek, to express our own new insights beyond those formulated or hinted …

The Geopolitics Of Shaming: When Human Rights Pressure Works—And When It Backfires Rochelle Terman. Princeton: Princeton University Press, 2023. Pp. 216., Brett J. Kyle

International Dialogue

In The Geopolitics of Shaming: When Human Rights Pressure Works—and When It Backfires (Princeton University Press, 2023), Rochelle Terman takes on the important and interesting question of the effectiveness of states’ denunciation of each other in the enforcement of human rights. “Naming and shaming” states for their human rights abuses has long been a feature of international relations. Despite its consistent presence in the international arena, it is often met with skepticism by IR scholars and seen as nothing more than power politics in disguise. Rather than seeking to downplay or push back against this criticism of norm enforcement, Terman …

Ethnocratizing The “Holy Land” The Politics Of Sacred Places: A View From Israel-Palestine Nimrod Luz. London, New York And Dublin: Bloomsbury Academic, 2023. Pp. 223., Curtis Hutt

International Dialogue

In this review essay, I will engage with some critical issues raised by Nimrod Luz in his recent book, The Politics of Sacred Places: A View From Israel-Palestine. This is a follow up to earlier articles that I have written for ID: International Dialogue and elsewhere related to holy sites as well as pilgrimage to, from, and within what is commonly known in the Western Christian world for the last one thousand years as the “Holy Land.” 1 It is also a companion piece to a recent review I have written of Marshall J. Breger and Leonard M. Hammer’s landmark …

Revolution And Dictatorship: The Violent Origin Of Durable Authoritarianism Steven Levitsky And Lucan Way. Princeton: Princeton University Press, 2022. Pp. 656., Joseph L. Derdzinski

International Dialogue

W h y do s o m e ––a nd not other, of course— regimes survive? Surveying a comprehensive range of historical and more contemporary examples, Levitsky and Way's Revolution and Dictatorship: The Violent Origins of Durable Authoritarianism is an important contribution to scholarship that seeks to answer this fundamental question. While much of comparative political specifically, and political science more broadly, centers on democratic regimes and their fragility (and cases of stability, to be fair), why some authoritarian regimes "succeed" over multiple generations is less well understood. By focusing on the authoritarian regimes that emerge from social revolutions, Levitsky …

Using Pay-For-Performance Payment Methodology Framework For Medicaid Reimbursement Rate In State Government, Motunrayo S. Dindi Oct 2024

Using Pay-For-Performance Payment Methodology Framework For Medicaid Reimbursement Rate In State Government, Motunrayo S. Dindi

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Medicaid Home Community Based Services (HCBS) program reimbursement rate policy plays a critical role in the rate determination and influences the type of care services received by program recipients. This qualitative case study evaluated the impact of the reimbursement rate policy on the quality of care received by Medicaid HCBS program beneficiaries. The practice-focused question for this study was from the Office of Rates and Reimbursements management perspective on how the state can implement an effective alternative reimbursement rate policy to achieve value-based care services that would result in better healthcare outcomes. To achieve the desired result, thematic and narrative …

Climate Change Adaptation Through Economic Democracy, Shriraksha Mohan Oct 2024

Climate Change Adaptation Through Economic Democracy, Shriraksha Mohan

Student Papers in Local and Global Regional Economies

As global climate change poses a serious threat to humanity's survival, equitable and just climate change adaptation has become the focus of several climate movements, social justice groups, governments, and international organizations. Climate sciences and studies have concluded that climate change not only impacts the planet's natural ecosystems, but also has cascading negative consequences on society and the economy. The existing paradigm of economic development has created vast wealth and resource inequality. The inequality further exacerbates the ill effects of climate change and makes vulnerable communities bear a disproportionate amount of the burden of climate catastrophes. This necessitates replacing the …

Army operations rely on fuel-intensive vehicles and aircraft, which contribute substantially to global emissions and the looming threat of global warming. This study evaluates the potential of transitioning five key U.S. Army vehicles, the M1301 ISV, HMMWV M1165, JLTV M1280, LMTV M1078, and M3A3 Bradley, from traditional diesel and JP8 powertrains to electric vehicle (EV) and hydrogen fuel cell vehicle (FCV) technologies. Vehicle specifications including engine power, fuel efficiency, weight, and payload were gathered for each vehicle and compared. Efficiency was estimated for EV and FCV powertrains using linear regressions with data from the AFLEET Online tool, which provided national …

Reimagining Gettysburg: Enhancing Walkability And Bikeability In Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, Gabriella Germano, Elif Ozturan, Jeanne-Marie Thomas

Student Publications

The overall goal of this study was to assess 28 selected locations in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, score them for walkability and bikeability, and suggest changes to low-ranking locations to improve the infrastructure of the town. We selected these points by focusing on areas of target for residents (grocery shopping, routes to work, schools, etc.), and to ensure we covered a major portion of the town for proper representation. We scored each of our sites using our instrument, which was broken down into two main categories: walkability and bikeability. We also conducted on-site interviews with passersby to collect first-hand accounts about these …

Understanding the neurobiology of semantic knowledge is a major goal of cognitive neuroscience. Taxonomic and thematic semantic knowledge are represented differently within the brain's conceptual networks, but the specific neural mechanisms remain unclear. Some neurobiological models propose that the anterior temporal lobe is an important hub for taxonomic knowledge, whereas the TPJ is especially involved in the representation of thematic knowledge. However, recent studies have provided divergent evidence. In this context, we investigated the neural correlates of taxonomic and thematic confrontation naming errors in 79 people with aphasia. We used three complementary lesion-symptom mapping (LSM) methods to investigate how structure …

Many coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) positive individuals exhibit abnormal electroencephalographic (EEG) activity reflecting “brain fog” and mild cognitive impairments even months after the acute phase of infection. Resting-state EEG abnormalities include EEG slowing (reduced alpha rhythm; increased slow waves) and epileptiform activity. An expert panel conducted a systematic review to present compelling evidence that cognitive deficits due to COVID-19 and to Alzheimer’s disease and related dementia (ADRD) are driven by overlapping pathologies and neurophysiological abnormalities. EEG abnormalities seen in COVID-19 patients resemble those observed in early stages of neurodegenerative diseases, particularly ADRD. It is proposed that similar EEG abnormalities in …

Good Kid M.A.A.D City A Study Analyzing The Root Motivation For Why Jordanians Join Jihadi Salafist Groups, Vincent Tocci Oct 2024

Good Kid M.A.A.D City A Study Analyzing The Root Motivation For Why Jordanians Join Jihadi Salafist Groups, Vincent Tocci

Jordan: Geopolitics, International Relations, and the Future of the Middle East

This study examines the motives of Jordanians who join Jihadi Salafist groups. Particularly, the researcher focuses on social and economic factors that could motivate Jordanians to join these groups. Drawing from interviews with experts, a review of the 2018 Sociology of Extremism and Terrorism in Jordan study, and historical analysis, the researcher identifies three primary motivators: government failure, identity crises, and economic challenges. Key findings highlight that the failure of Arab states to provide adequate governance and public services to their people caused mistrust and a feeling of discrimination among the Arab people. Identity issues, a deep sense of isolation, …

Madre De La Nación: Confianza Ciudadana En La Democracia Y Participación Política De Las Mujeres Bajo La Presidencia De Dina Boluarte, Emma Ulvin

Peru: Indigenous Peoples and Globalization

Dina Boluarte's presidency marks a tumultuous chapter in Peruvian politics, as she faces the challenges of being the country's first female president against a backdrop of corruption scandals and widespread civil discontent. Her government has been characterized by a marked disconnect between her promises and the realities faced by Peruvians, who continue to struggle with systemic inequalities. Despite her attempt at fostering a “Mother of the Nation” image, Boluarte has struggled to translate her leadership into tangible improvements for marginalized groups and women. This situation has not only affected public perception, but has also raised critical questions about the effectiveness …

Unrealized Potential: South Africa’S Bill Of Inaccessible Rights: What Three Cape Town Human Rights Activist Have To Say About The Adequacy Of Three Clauses In South Africa’S Bill Of Rights, Saylor Wilkes Donaldson Oct 2024

Unrealized Potential: South Africa’S Bill Of Inaccessible Rights: What Three Cape Town Human Rights Activist Have To Say About The Adequacy Of Three Clauses In South Africa’S Bill Of Rights, Saylor Wilkes Donaldson

South Africa: Multiculturalism and Human Rights

The South African Constitution is often referred to as the most progressive constitution in the world by both locals and international academics. Its establishment would come after decades of racial abuse and discrimination which called for political and social rights for a population that had been neglected for years. Although, this sentiment quickly comes into question as soon as an individual travels more than ten kilometers outside of the Cape Town city center. This is where informal settlements and their lack of basic necessities such as clean water, proper housing structures, and consistent education become visible. The South African Bill …

In God’S Time: Pastoral Care And Migrant Faith In Mexico And The Borderlands Of The United States Of America, Katherine Rocky Marshall Oct 2024

In God’S Time: Pastoral Care And Migrant Faith In Mexico And The Borderlands Of The United States Of America, Katherine Rocky Marshall

Mexico: Migration, Borders, and Transnational Communities

Katherine Marshall, a student of Religious Studies, responds to the following question by recounting a series of interviews with professors and pastoral care practitioners from Mexico and the United States of America: “With a focus on the Catholic Church, what is the importance of pastoral care for people migrating through Mexico to the United States of America?” Pastoral care is a part of many religious traditions, but, in a Christian context, it is a practice that involves becoming a physical reminder of God’s constant presence. Pastoral care practitioners make deep listening the core of their work, responding to various needs …

Percepciones De La Migración: Corredor Interoceánico Del Istmo De Tehuantepec, Joaquin Villagran-Hernandez Oct 2024

Percepciones De La Migración: Corredor Interoceánico Del Istmo De Tehuantepec, Joaquin Villagran-Hernandez

Mexico: Migration, Borders, and Transnational Communities

Madhesi Dalit Women’S Experience With ‘Development’ And Its Limitations In Nepal, Chloe Peyton

Nepal: Development, Gender, and Social Change in the Himalaya

In the study of development, the thoughts, viewpoints, and overall experience of beneficiaries contribute a humanitarian viewpoint to an often abstracted and speculative realm of study. This research focuses on Dalit women in the Madhesh province of Nepal and their experiences with development, thereby providing context to beneficiaries' and non-beneficiaries expectations and desires regarding development, as well as the unresolved challenges faced by Dalit women despite development efforts. Madhesi Dalit women are the focus of this research as their intersectional identities place them in a uniquely challenging position to attain equal treatment and opportunity, and these women, in particular, are …

The Approaches And Implications Of English Medium Of Instruction In Nepal’S Private Schools, Vivian Ko Oct 2024

The Approaches And Implications Of English Medium Of Instruction In Nepal’S Private Schools, Vivian Ko

Nepal: Development, Gender, and Social Change in the Himalaya

In this report, I discuss how English Medium of Instruction (EMI) is approached by private schools in Nepal and its implications on larger society. Nepal’s increasing demand for EMI, and thus private schools, has contributed to a variety of social issues including inaccessibility and a dying culture. By situating EMI in Nepal’s education system, I explore how the privatization of schools and the wide implementation of EMI is both a result of neoliberalism and a contributing factor to such ideologies. Observations of EMI classes and non-academic spaces on school grounds, in addition to interviews and focus groups with students and …

Unpacking Migration: Education, Livelihoods, And Local Choices In Nepal’S Ilam District, Katherine Lipman Oct 2024

Unpacking Migration: Education, Livelihoods, And Local Choices In Nepal’S Ilam District, Katherine Lipman

Nepal: Development, Gender, and Social Change in the Himalaya

This research examines labor migration in Nepal, focusing on the Ilam district within Koshi Province, an area with high rates of outward migration. Drawing on a background in Industrial and Labor Relations, the study seeks to understand why some individuals choose to remain in communities characterized by extensive labor migration. By analyzing the impact of the "three U's"—unskilled, uneducated, and unaware—on migration decisions, the study investigates how local education systems, skill-building opportunities, and labor market alignment shape these choices. The research methodology blends qualitative and experiential approaches, including interviews with educators, community members, and workers, alongside immersive observation of daily …
