The Changing Power Dynamics And Emerging Multipolarity In Wto, Ruishi Zhang
The Changing Power Dynamics And Emerging Multipolarity In Wto, Ruishi Zhang
Switzerland: International Studies and Multilateral Diplomacy
This paper examines the evolving power dynamics within the WTO since its creation and provides an in-depth analysis of how the changing power dynamics has impacted the multilateral institutions within the WTO. The analysis is divided into three sessions, each talking about a phase of power dynamics. The first phase explores how power imbalances between developed and developing countries have prompted the latter to form coalitions to counterbalance developed country dominance. The second phase stresses the growing multipolarity and multilateralism driven by the rising influence of developing countries, which is reflected by divergent trade interests within developing countries and the inability …
Drones And Ai In Modern Warfare: A Security Analysis, Tze Fung Kao
Drones And Ai In Modern Warfare: A Security Analysis, Tze Fung Kao
Switzerland: International Studies and Multilateral Diplomacy
Artificial intelligence’s (AI) rapid development and integration into drone systems is reshaping modern warfare, with significant implications for international security. As seen in the 2022 Russo-Ukrainian and the 2023 Israel-Hamas war, AI-enabled drones are increasingly employed for intelligence, surveillance, reconnaissance (ISR), loitering munitions, and swarm formations. The use of AI for autonomous target identification and decision-making raises both operational advantages and ethical concerns, particularly concerning accountability and the potential for unintended escalation. This paper explores the capabilities of AI drones, focusing on their implication for global security and stability and the growing challenge of regulating such systems. The proliferation of …
Building Effective Partnerships Between International Aid Organizations And Civil Society: An Integrated Approach To Tackling Stunting In Indonesia , Nayla Punjabi
Switzerland: International Studies and Multilateral Diplomacy
This study examines the dynamics of collaboration between international aid organizations and civil society, using stunting in rural Indonesian communities as a case study. Stunting, caused by chronic malnutrition during early childhood, leads to irreversible physical and cognitive impairment. Addressing the cultural nuances of this issue requires integrated efforts, highlighting the need to evaluate how international organizations can contribute effectively. This investigation draws on four primary interviews and relevant literature to analyze the factors that enable and hinder successful partnerships. The findings identify significant barriers to collaboration, including top-heavy organizational …

Power Politics And Nuclear Weapons: A Geopolitical Analysis Of Iran’S Nuclear Program, Jade Matthias
Switzerland: International Studies and Multilateral Diplomacy
Iran's nuclear program has long been a central concern in global security, influencing both regional power dynamics and international relations. This paper examines how geopolitical factors shape Iran's pursuit of nuclear technology, particularly in relation to its national security, regional dominance, and diplomatic leverage. While Iran’s nuclear ambitions are often analyzed in isolation, this study situates them within the context of the evolving global power landscape, particularly the rise of China and the perceived decline of U.S. influence. The paper argues that Iran’s nuclear program functions as both a defensive measure and a strategic tool in power politics, serving to …
The Green Divide: Investigating Possible Socioeconomic Inequities In Public Green Space Quality In Lisbon, Portugal, Paul Coffield
The Green Divide: Investigating Possible Socioeconomic Inequities In Public Green Space Quality In Lisbon, Portugal, Paul Coffield
Portugal: Sustainability and Environmental Justice
Public green spaces are an essential element of urban design, providing numerous environmental, social, and health-related benefits to urban populations. This study assesses the quality of public green spaces across four neighborhoods of varying socioeconomic status in Lisbon, Portugal, asking ‘Are socioeconomic inequities in park quality present in Lisbon?’ While previous studies have assessed the spatial distribution of urban green space in Lisbon, this study focuses on the quality of Lisbon’s green spaces, as quality determines to what extent a green space benefits the community in which it is located. Four Lisbon parishes were selected based on their median gross …
Geothermal Best Practices And Economic Development: The Case Of Iceland And São Miguel Island, Walker Briggs
Geothermal Best Practices And Economic Development: The Case Of Iceland And São Miguel Island, Walker Briggs
Portugal: Sustainability and Environmental Justice
Throughout human history, geothermal energy has been used for practical purposes, religious purposes, as a form of community engagement and as a natural heating system. Since the industrial revolution, the global community has relied on fossil fuels for energy production. Not only is the large-scale use of fossil fuels widely accepted internationally, but it is also extremely profitable for fossil fuel companies. This has had catastrophic impacts on climate change and the environment. Nations have recognized the dangers and negative impacts of the reliance on fossil fuels for energy production. Nations have been funding extensive research regarding renewable energy infrastructure …
The Impact Of The Nitrates Directive On The Portuguese Agricultural Sector, Ben Mayes
The Impact Of The Nitrates Directive On The Portuguese Agricultural Sector, Ben Mayes
Portugal: Sustainability and Environmental Justice
The European Union’s 1991 Nitrates Directive was designed to mitigate agricultural nitrogen pollution to ground and surface waters, thereby alleviating its damaging effects to natural environments and human health. This study confirmed that its purpose and goals were justified by the positive linear relationship that exists between levels of agricultural fertilizer application and nitrogen ecosystem surplus. However, this policy has had several second-hand impacts on the Portuguese agricultural sector, such as imposing infrastructure implementation costs and forcing methodology changes. These impacts were examined in the context of the Esposende-Vila do Conde action program, which is within a Nitrate Vulnerable Zone …
Evaluating The Efficacy Of The Albufeira Convention In A Time Of Water Uncertainty: The Case Of The Guadiana Basin, Hudson Sizemore
Evaluating The Efficacy Of The Albufeira Convention In A Time Of Water Uncertainty: The Case Of The Guadiana Basin, Hudson Sizemore
Portugal: Sustainability and Environmental Justice
This study evaluates the Albufeira Convention’s effectiveness in managing transboundary water resources in the Guadiana River Basin under increasing water scarcity. The primary objectives are to assess the Convention's capacity to balance ecological preservation with competing agricultural and municipal water demands, and to identify areas for improvement in its implementation. The research uses a qualitative methodology, relying on a systematic review of media, policy, and academic sources, supplemented by a structured SWOT analysis to organize findings and provide actionable insights. The analysis reveals that while the Convention fosters cooperation between Portugal and Spain, it falls short in addressing evolving hydrological …

Correcting Misperceptions About Very Low Nicotine Cigarettes For Cigarette-Only Smokers, Dual/Poly Smokers, Other Tobacco Users, And Non-Tobacco Users, Rui Shi, Robert Feldman, Jiaying Liu, Pamela I. Clark
College of Communication & Creative Arts Departmental Research
Background
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration authorized the sale and marketing of two very low nicotine cigarettes (VLNC) as modified risk tobacco products. The misperception that VLNC are healthier than regular cigarettes is common. This study explores effective message strategies to inform the public about health risks associated with VLNC use, encourage cigarette smokers to try VLNC, and prevent other tobacco users and non-users from product initiation. Methods
Following the Reasoned Action approach, a VLNC educational message was developed based on the salient beliefs associated with behavioral intention. The message was tested in an online survey conducted in 2018, …Closest To The Harm, Closest To The Solution: Indigenous Resistance To Colonial Capitalism Through Female Leadership In Financial Inclusion, Grace Evans
Washington Semester Program
Channeling the strength of the culture, identity, and people who came before them, Indigenous women are countering the racism and sexism inherent in ongoing colonialism through their return to leadership. When it comes to caring for their communities, Native women are dedicated, determined change-makers. This devotion, grounded in the cultural centrality of Indigenous women, has remained strong throughout the tribulations of relatively recent history, marked by atrocities such as invasion, assimilation, and attempted genocide. Colonization is an institution of violence. The United States, in creation and evolution, has been no exception. Particularly targeted through this process have been the bodies, …

Immigrant Integration In Akureyri, Iceland: Identifying Ways To Cultivate A ‘Sense Of Belonging,’ From The Perspective Of Foreigners, Eliana Goldstein
Immigrant Integration In Akureyri, Iceland: Identifying Ways To Cultivate A ‘Sense Of Belonging,’ From The Perspective Of Foreigners, Eliana Goldstein
Iceland: Climate Change and The Arctic
Iceland has experienced significant demographic changes since the 1990s. As climate change intensifies, raising the global temperature, migration to cooler climates such as Iceland will increase. To minimize ‘othering’ and rhetoric conducive to anti-immigrant environments, Iceland must work on integration issues, especially while opportunities and perceptions of other groups are still manageable. Through a series of interviews and discussions with foreigners in Akureyri and a focus group with employees from the University Centre of the Westfjords, integration was defined as a ‘sense of belonging’ and the ability to communicate with the native majority. To aid integration, this study identified a …

Outcomes Of Alcohol-Associated Hepatitis In Hospitalized Patients With Prior Bariatric Surgery: A Nationwide Analysis, 2016-2020, Sarpong Boateng, Prince A. Ameyaw, Karthik Mathialagan, Basile Njei
Posters
Alcohol-associated hepatitis (AAH) is a severe liver condition often necessitating hospitalization and has a one-year mortality of 40%. The increasing prevalence of obesity has led to a rise in bariatric surgery (BS), which can alter the outcomes of various comorbid conditions. There are some concerns about possible increased risk and severity of alcohol related disorders in patients with a history of BS due to alteration in alcohol metabolism after surgery.

We live in a day of fast information, fast fingers, fast food, fast shipping, fast words, fast anger, and fast judgment. Our fight-or-flight impulses keep us on high alert, aided by mobile devices that vibrate each time another crisis strikes. All this fastness can easily interfere with a slow, intentional life grounded in God’s love.
Christian faith has deep treasures and practices to offer us. How will we live, and who will we be in this highly charged era where politics, economics, environment, and social norms are under significant duress?
Come explore quieter, more intentional ways of being, and how …

Reforming Community Structures: The Public Library's Impact On The Midwestern Author, Mary Sabo
Reforming Community Structures: The Public Library's Impact On The Midwestern Author, Mary Sabo
English: Student Scholarship & Creative Works
Public libraries, though increasingly overlooked, are pivotal spaces for Midwestern communities. Public libraries are fundamental institutions for those in their community and have consistently remained this way, due to the safety they provide as constant outlets for public life. Established in the late 1800s, the emerging public library system developed itself with the foundational goal of reforming society and addressing issues of “public vice” such as “drinking, gambling, and prostitution” (Goldstein 214). The following research discusses public libraries and librarians' continuous support for the moral health of society and how the public library has influenced Midwestern literary careers, specifically that …
