First-Gen Voices: Creative and Critical Narratives on the First-Generation College Experience

Through a first-person perspective, we travel along to Costa Rica with LMU’s First To Go students. Utilizing a long format, home video style, the goal is to communicate the authentic experiences that occurred during the trip. It’s one thing to be a young adult getting the chance to explore new parts of the world, but it’s a different privilege to get to do it with others that you can connect with. So much so that in the couple months preceding the trip, I found myself dealing with that post-trip depression. However, in that state, I found the beauty of being …

On My Heart, Chaylah Williams

First-Gen Voices: Creative and Critical Narratives on the First-Generation College Experience

I never thought that when I would start traveling internationally that it would be alone I always imagined it with my family, but never did I imagine traveling to really interact with the communities either I always thought of traveling as leisure. I guess I could say this impression was not implemented when OI started traveling as I started to notice how I didn’t want to do touristy things and I really just wanted to be. To be there to be present to be aware and I think that is what I enjoyed the most about my trip to Costa …

Global Parallels: A Reflection On Civil Rights And Ethical Consumerism In Costa Rica, Anonymous

First-Gen Voices: Creative and Critical Narratives on the First-Generation College Experience

This reflection on the First to Go trip to Costa Rica examines the civil rights issues faced in the country. In particular, it highlights the significant parallels with the United States, especially concerning immigrant communities. During our time there we specifically talked about the exploitation of immigrant labor on pineapple plantations by corporations like Del Monte. This trip underscored my understanding of ethical consumerism and a new approach to mindful purchasing.

First-Gen Voices: Creative and Critical Narratives on the First-Generation College Experience

This free-write poem was written with a purpose of making meaning of the Blue Morpho butterfly I continuously saw abroad in Costa Rica. Being able to have captivating conversations with locals all while being comforted by the country’s blanket of communal love was an unforgettable experience. As a metaphor for change, growth, and transformation, I found this remarkable butterfly to be a highlight of my time in Costa Rica. As a symbol of my late father, it called for reflection and sitting with suppressed emotions. For that reason, I wanted to depict how its reappearing presence became a hopeful reminder …

Development Of A Severe Winter Index: Buffalo, New York, Theodore Mcinerney, Stephen Vermette Oct 2024

Development Of A Severe Winter Index: Buffalo, New York, Theodore Mcinerney, Stephen Vermette

The Geographical Bulletin

Climate indices provide a useful way to characterize climate. The objective of this study is to rank the past 37 winters (1970-1971 to 2006-2007) in Buffalo, New York using a ‘Severe Winter Index’ (SWI) that incorporates a number of winter-related elements. Five elements were chosen to reflect varying aspects of a winter season: snowfall amount, number of days with 12 inches or greater of snow on the ground, heating degree days (HDD), number of days with temperatures at or below 0o F, and percent cloudiness during daylight hours. Data were obtained from the Buffalo Forecast Office of the National Weather …

Spatial Patterns Of Methamphetamine In North Dakota, Alex Feidler, Roni Mayzer, Kevin Romig, Douglas Munski Oct 2024

Spatial Patterns Of Methamphetamine In North Dakota, Alex Feidler, Roni Mayzer, Kevin Romig, Douglas Munski

The Geographical Bulletin

In the last decade, the methamphetamine situation has become critical in North Dakota, which has the third-highest rate of clandestine meth lab seizures in the country. This study addresses two questions: 1) What is the spatial pattern of meth–related arrests in North Dakota? and 2) What geographic factors account for the increased prevalence of meth use and production in the state? This study employs GIS overlay and multiple regression analysis to determine the spatiality of the phenomenon. The findings reveal that meth-related arrests tend to take place in the more urban southeast and central counties while meth lab seizures tend …

Displacement And Development: The Paradoxes Of India’S Tehri Dam, Jason Newton Oct 2024

Displacement And Development: The Paradoxes Of India’S Tehri Dam, Jason Newton

The Geographical Bulletin

The town of Old Tehri, India has been inundated by a lake created by the construction of the Tehri Hydroelectric Dam, one of the Indian government’s newest modernization and development projects. This dam is beset by a paradox: it attempts to bring modernization and development to the far reaches of the territory, while creating displacement conflicts which can change a relatively few people’s lives for the potential benefit of millions of others. A new city designed for the displaced residents, New Tehri, has been presented by the government as a solution for the displaced people. However, by conducting fieldwork onsite …

Growth-Liberating Technology Meets Fragmented Regulation: Decentralized Wastewater Systems In Wilson County, Tennessee, Kendrick J. Curtis Oct 2024

Growth-Liberating Technology Meets Fragmented Regulation: Decentralized Wastewater Systems In Wilson County, Tennessee, Kendrick J. Curtis

The Geographical Bulletin

Conventional sewage disposal technologies have long been a critical limiting factor of growth patterns. However, the advent of decentralized wastewater systems is weakening their influence. No longer constrained to areas where sewers can be economically extended or limited by the siting constraints of septic systems, developers are free to pursue projects wherever opportunities arise. In this paper, I examine what happened when this spatially liberating technology was introduced into an existing suite of regulations, jurisdictions, and actors involved in the development process. I found that while local governments are making rational decisions, they are doing so within limited spatial bounds. …

The Impact Of Nudge On Tax Compliance: A Study Of Taxpayers In Lebanon, Abdallah Ficani, Sélim Mekdessi Oct 2024

The Impact Of Nudge On Tax Compliance: A Study Of Taxpayers In Lebanon, Abdallah Ficani, Sélim Mekdessi

Arab Economic and Business Journal

This study explores the complex area of tax compliance in Lebanon, using the principles of behavioral economics and nudges as intervention tools. The central problem is to understand how nudges can positively influence the tax behavior of Lebanese taxpayers and improve tax collection. This study tends to investigate how can nudges modify taxpayers' tax behavior in Lebanon. To achieve those objectives, questionnaires were administered to a randomly selected sample of 500 Lebanese taxpayers. The results show that nudges have a significant positive impact on tax compliance. The study underscores the need for continuous evaluation and adaptation of nudge strategies to …

Estimation And Inference In A Possibly Multi-Cointegrated System With A Fixed Number Of Instruments, Yixiao Sun, Peter C.B. Phillips, Igor Kheifets Oct 2024

Estimation And Inference In A Possibly Multi-Cointegrated System With A Fixed Number Of Instruments, Yixiao Sun, Peter C.B. Phillips, Igor Kheifets

Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers

This note shows that the mixed normal asymptotic limit of the trend IV estimator with a fixed number of deterministic instruments (fTIV) holds in both singular (multicointegrated) and nonsingular cointegration systems, thereby relaxing the exogeneity condition in (Phillips and Kheifets, 2024, Theorem 1(ii)). The mixed normality of the limiting distribution of fTIV allows for asymptotically pivotal F tests about the cointegration parameters and for simple efficiency comparisons of the estimators for different numbers K of instruments, as well as comparisons with the trend IV estimator when K → ∞ with the sample size.

Oer As Transformation Tool: How Colorado's Oer Community Creates Change Beyond Textbooks, Jennifer Mayer, Chealsye Bowley, Katie Brown, Teresa Connolly, Nicholas Swails

University Libraries Publications

OER is used to transform the affordability of education, but OER can also be used as a tool for cultural change across an institution or state. In Colorado, the open education community has used OER as a tool to advance justice, equity, diversity and inclusion; disciplinary, institutional, and state-level cultural change; and to advocate for student interests. Presenters representing a two-year college, four-year universities, and state government will discuss how their individual institutions and the state OER Council have leveraged OER to cultivate change from implementing state government-level funding for the development of OER to OER being used to lay …

Racial Residential Segregation And Covid-19 Health Outcomes: Evidence From The State Of Georgia, Palak Patel, Simon Medcalfe, Catherine P. Slade Oct 2024

Racial Residential Segregation And Covid-19 Health Outcomes: Evidence From The State Of Georgia, Palak Patel, Simon Medcalfe, Catherine P. Slade

Journal of the Georgia Public Health Association

ABSTRACT

Background:

According to the Georgia Department of Public Health (GDPH), the state of Georgia reported 563,658 cumulative COVID-19 cases and 9,845 total deaths in 2020. Decades of research on racial disparities in health outcomes suggest we should not be surprised with the disproportionate number of cases, hospital visits, and deaths of non-white and Black Georgia residents. Racial disparities in health are often defined by a Social Determinants of Health (SDOH) model. One understudied SDOH is racial residential segregation. In this study we explore the relationship between racial residential segregation and COVID-19 health outcomes. Our paper addresses critical challenges for …

Understanding The Role Of Perceived Racial Discrimination On Adolescent Mental Health During The Covid-19 Pandemic, Jill V. Klosky, Delia Lang, Briana Woods-Jaeger, Julie Gazmararian

Journal of the Georgia Public Health Association

Abstract

Background: Adolescent mental health declined during the COVID-19 pandemic. Racial discrimination, which may negatively affect adolescent mental health, has increased. This study sought to understand whether pre-pandemic reports of racial discrimination predicted changes in adolescent depression, anxiety, and self-esteem from before to during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Methods: Two online surveys were administered at two public high schools in semi-rural, north-central Georgia; one in Spring 2020, just before the closing of public schools due to COVID-19; the other to the same students in Fall 2020.

Results: Most participants were White (62%) and the majority (88%), reported the same or better …

Posters, Proceedings, and Presentations: CTR Library

The University of Nebraska at Kearney( UNK) is completing an extensive renovation to the Calvin T. Ryan Library. Nebraska’s 1% for Art Law requires that 1% of all state-funded projects be set aside for a public art commission. The Nebraska Arts Council spearheaded UNK’s search and out of over 100 submissions the successful applicant was Leslie Iwai, an accomplished artist with a history of creating thought-provoking pieces in public spaces, galleries and museums. Together with Nebraska’s State Poet Matt Mason, serving as cumulate’s Poetry Curator, she designed and created an interdisciplinary art project aimed at sparking curiosity and interaction …
