The Impact Of The Covid-19 Pandemic And Associated Restrictions On Children’S Play: A Systematic Literature Review, Aidan H. Fielding Mr, Emma Harding Oct 2024

The Impact Of The Covid-19 Pandemic And Associated Restrictions On Children’S Play: A Systematic Literature Review, Aidan H. Fielding Mr, Emma Harding

International Journal of Playwork Practice

Play is recognised for its essential role in children’s development and, as such, the right to play has been internationally ratified through the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child. However, during the COVID-19 pandemic, people’s day-to-day lives were universally disrupted by restrictions and children’s ability to play as usual was impacted. The aim of this review was to examine the ways in which the COVID-19 pandemic affected children’s play around the world, and whether this differed as a function of their national context. Database searches were conducted between August 2022 and February 2023, whereby a total of …

An Analysis Of Wage Determinants And Gender Wage Inequality In The Daily Labor Market Of Bangladesh: A Quantile Regression Approach, Al Mamun Oct 2024

An Analysis Of Wage Determinants And Gender Wage Inequality In The Daily Labor Market Of Bangladesh: A Quantile Regression Approach, Al Mamun

Arab Economic and Business Journal

This study investigates wage determination and gender-based wage disparities in Bangladesh's daily labor market using HIES 2010 and 2016 datasets and OLS and Quantile Regression methods. Results reveal a substantial gender wage gap, with females earning 22.9% less than males in 2010, increasing to 62.2% in 2016. The gap lessens across quantiles, indicating a sticky floor effect in both years. Various determinants, including human capital and social factors, affect wages differently. Policy implications underscore the need for equal pay advocacy, shared familial responsibilities, and targeted interventions to rectify gender-based wage disparities. The study offers nuanced insights crucial for fostering an …

The focus of the redesign process was on effectively transmitting information on standards to the RIT community at the point of need, detailing what standards are available through library and other sources, how other standards can be requested and acquired, and how engineers and engineering students can work with standards.

Changing Minds And Methods: Providing Health Science Faculty With Optional Systematic Reviews Assignments, Laura Lipke, Neyda Gilman Oct 2024

Changing Minds And Methods: Providing Health Science Faculty With Optional Systematic Reviews Assignments, Laura Lipke, Neyda Gilman

Upstate New York Science Librarians Conference

Background

Health science librarians frequently engage in discussions about the proper assignment of systematic reviews for graduate students. Such reviews are often assigned as a way to build the research skills students will need in a clinical environment and provide them with a publishable deliverable. In the assignment of these reviews, it has become apparent that health science faculty are often not familiar with the standardized methodologies required. Incorrect methodologies can contribute to research waste and produce evidence that cannot be applied for its intended purpose.

Case presentation

Health science librarians at an R1 institution decided to address the systematic …

Gen Z + Scientific Information Literacy —> A Catalyst For Change, Sherry Larson-Rhodes Oct 2024

Gen Z + Scientific Information Literacy —> A Catalyst For Change, Sherry Larson-Rhodes

Upstate New York Science Librarians Conference

In the last decade, the traditional college-aged population (ages 18–22) has shifted from Millennials to Gen Z. This generational shift has necessitated pedagogical change, as discovered w/the changing response to a long-used lesson on scientific information literacy. The lesson, which had been used since 2013, specified a pre-class assignment of reading three different types of scientific articles & an in-class discussion about various aspects of the articles, led by the sciences research instruction librarian. Up until about 2018/2019, students had readily responded to the in-class discussion questions w/answers from their pre-class work. However, at that time, & especially upon the …

Let’S Have A Serious Talk About Generative Ai: How Stem Librarians Should Be Leading A Conversation, Juan Denzer Oct 2024

Let’S Have A Serious Talk About Generative Ai: How Stem Librarians Should Be Leading A Conversation, Juan Denzer

Upstate New York Science Librarians Conference

As the initial interests in Generative AI tools has moved from something new and unclear to familiar tools that are already being adopted by STEM faculty and students. Vendors such as Elsevier and Clarivate are working on new AI tools that will be incorporated into their existing databases and products. Unlike other 3rd party Generative AI startups, who mostly are trying to monetize their tools by providing a solution to a problem that may or may not exist. Publishers are more cautious in providing an enhanced tool that compliments their existing products. These vendors also have a long history with …

Enhancing Public Library Staff's Responses To Socially Vulnerable Patrons Experiencing A Psychological Crisis, Brianne Hanson Oct 2024

Enhancing Public Library Staff's Responses To Socially Vulnerable Patrons Experiencing A Psychological Crisis, Brianne Hanson

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Social workers and other specialized staff employed at U.S. public libraries work daily to de-escalate and provide crisis response to socially vulnerable patrons. However, there was a gap in cohesive and generalizable information regarding how specialized program staff respond to patrons’ psychological crises. The aim of this qualitative force field analysis study was to identify and document a model procedure for library staff to implement during a customer crisis. A secondary aim was to inform the actions and de-escalation approaches taken by staff members during these incidents. Study participants included 12 specialized staff members currently working in public library programming …

Cognitive Landscapes: Argument Evaluations, Misinformation Corrections, And Racial Attitudes In Modern Media, Dominique Lockett Oct 2024

Cognitive Landscapes: Argument Evaluations, Misinformation Corrections, And Racial Attitudes In Modern Media, Dominique Lockett

Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation explores three critical aspects of communication that significantly impact how individuals process information and form opinions in today's polarized media landscape. While the experiments in each chapter do not directly interact, they collectively illuminate the complex interplay of cognitive biases, misperceptions, and counter-normative speech in shaping public discourse. The first chapter examines argument congruency bias, demonstrating how individuals evaluate arguments based on their alignment with pre-existing beliefs while still distinguishing between strong and weak reasoning. It also investigates the potential of objectivity priming to mitigate these biases, yielding insights into the challenges of overcoming ingrained cognitive patterns. The …

The study employed a multiple baseline design across participants to evaluate the effect of function-based self-monitoring on FCR, task engagement, and problem behavior. Following a 30-min training, the students and staff independently implemented the function-based self-monitoring procedure with fidelity which led to desired changes in student …

Evidence Synthesis In My Discipline: Yes, No, Maybe So?, Lindsay Bahureksa Oct 2024

Evidence Synthesis In My Discipline: Yes, No, Maybe So?, Lindsay Bahureksa

Upstate New York Science Librarians Conference

In the noisy information landscape, evidence synthesis projects provide unbiased information needed to make big decisions. Evidence synthesis, which includes systematic reviews, comprehensively collects information across resources to ensure that the literature synthesis is both unbiased and reproducible. These types of projects have traditionally been run in medical fields, where evidence synthesis informs best practice in high-stake environments. In recent years, however, evidence synthesis projects have begun to grow beyond the medical fields. This presentation will focus on summarizing the shift of evidence synthesis projects in the past ten years—covering the numbers of projects published, the disciplines covered, or the …
