Enhancing Cultural Competence In Counselor Education Through Sociolinguistic Awareness, Jessica Haas, Diane D. Walsh, Marisa Marroquin
Enhancing Cultural Competence In Counselor Education Through Sociolinguistic Awareness, Jessica Haas, Diane D. Walsh, Marisa Marroquin
Counseling Faculty Publications
Abstract
Language plays a central role in building a therapeutic working alliance. Language is essential in building trust, conveying empathy, and creating shared meaning between counselors and clients. Nevertheless, language can equally harm the working alliance if used insensitively or without awareness of cultural and social differences. Sociolinguistic awareness emphasizes the interpretational nature of language and how it can unintentionally perpetuate discrimination against marginalized identities. Counselor educators can utilize sociolinguistic principles to model and teach the significance of language in counseling and its relationship to multicultural competency and cultural humility. The article highlights how clients' language may connect to their …
Challenges Of Conceptualizing, Creating, And Researching The History Of South Louisiana Hospitals, Chandler D. Smith, Jennifer K. Lloyd
Challenges Of Conceptualizing, Creating, And Researching The History Of South Louisiana Hospitals, Chandler D. Smith, Jennifer K. Lloyd
Library Faculty Publications
Objective: To create a resource guide on closed and relocated historical hospitals in the southern region of Louisiana, documenting rural and urban hospitals with their address, years open, interesting facts, and photographs if available.
Methods: A reference question about a historical hospital in the area prompted the idea, as when doing research for information about the hospital, it was more challenging than initially thought it would be to find photos and other information. Information was collected from a wide range of sources such as directories, newspaper and magazine articles, government reports, etc. Using this information, we have built a public …
Revisiting Marcuse On Repressive Tolerance: A Twenty-First Century Retrospective, David Ingram
Revisiting Marcuse On Repressive Tolerance: A Twenty-First Century Retrospective, David Ingram
Philosophy: Faculty Publications and Other Works
Herbert Marcuse’s essay Repressive Tolerance (RP) has been praised by the Left and vilified by the Right for its alleged promotion of censorship targeting reactionary opinions and actions. I argue that this interpretation of the text is mistaken. According to my alternative reading of the text, RP should be understood as an exercise in provocation and irony aimed at defending civil disobedience and dissent. Marcuse’s defense of dissent, however, appeals to a critique of pure tolerance that exposes the unavoidably partisan practice of tolerance, which invariably favors the reigning undemocratic status quo. The choice whether to tolerate in a manner …

Place-based socio-economic and racial inequities contribute to health disparities among people with HIV (PWH). We used geographic ecological momentary assessment (GEMA) methodologies to explore the interplay between psychosocial outcomes in daily diaries and community spatial measures among PWH in New Orleans. PWH (N = 69) were recruited from a clinic-based cohort study. Micro-longitudinal data were collected via smartphone-based daily diaries and geospatial tracking over 14 days. First, correlations were run between diary derived outcomes (e.g., feeling safe in current location, stress), and spatial measures (e.g., violent crime, alcohol outlets, and vacant lots) within a half-mile buffer around each diary point …

Getting Started With Geographic Information Systems By Keith C. Clark, Shivaij Prasad
Getting Started With Geographic Information Systems By Keith C. Clark, Shivaij Prasad
The Geographical Bulletin
Since its first edition, this book has been an excellent contribution to the field of Geographic Information Systems (GIS). This fourth edition is considerably improved over the previous edition in terms of both extraordinary breadth of subject matter covered and the straightforward manner in which the information is presented. In four sections and 340 pages total, Getting Started With GIS covers the core of most GIS applications needed to address fundamental spatial questions such as where, what, and why. This very readable text is logically ordered with each chapter nicely balanced between GIS concepts and its practical applications. Throughout the …

Urban Street Systems In Nineteenth-Century Ohio Towns: An Analysis Of Diffusion, John M. Wegner
Urban Street Systems In Nineteenth-Century Ohio Towns: An Analysis Of Diffusion, John M. Wegner
The Geographical Bulletin
This study considers the possible “migration” of urban street patterns associated with discrete east coast culture regions to America’s trans-Appalachian interior during the 19th century. Also examined was the possibility that these street patterns became less “culturallybound,“ or more admixed, over time. Ohio, one of the first (and most culturally diverse) trans-Appalachian states, was the focus of the study. To ascertain answers to the above questions, data pertaining to town platting throughout the state (as well as for four distinct survey regions associated with discrete east coast migration) was culled from county atlases and histories. Variables were selected so as …
Human Rights Abuses On The U.S.-Mexico Border, Emily J. Salava
Human Rights Abuses On The U.S.-Mexico Border, Emily J. Salava
The Geographical Bulletin
INTRODUCTION This study examines the current human rights abuses found at the United States and Mexico border. For the purposes of this paper, human rights are defined as found in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, adopted by the United Nations in 1948, but other agreements may be cited for reference. What one person considers an abuse, another person may coin as a reality of life. The focus of this study is on the existence of human rights abuses, but does not specifically examine the historical causes. There are many agencies working in the region and abroad to protect the …
Gtu’S Conscience, Heart, And Soul: O. Orland Maxfield, A Mentor, Leon C. Hallman
Gtu’S Conscience, Heart, And Soul: O. Orland Maxfield, A Mentor, Leon C. Hallman
The Geographical Bulletin
A mentor is defined as a trusted advisor. One usually thinks of mentoring in the context of one person helping another. However, an institution can have a mentor—its conscience, heart, soul, and history. Gamma Theta Upsilon is such an institution and Dr. O. Orland Maxfield is such a mentor. This paper outlines and recaps the ways this mentor has aided this international geographical honor society. Mentoring: one of the oldest forms of influence. One generally thinks that mentoring began with Homer telling about the King of Ithaca asking his fiend Mentor to look after his son Telemachus while he fought …

Last Sunday afternoon I was at an auction out in the Boston Mountains, standing in line to get a bidder’s number while the man in front of me quarreled about giving information. Then the man behind me said, “I know my name but I don’t know who I am.” I feel a bit like that. It’s my name in the program but am I really the person being honored. I have spoken of this momentous event in my life as being the result of a conspiracy among friends. There is no way that I can thank them adequately for their …

Mentor—Mentoree, What Is In A Relationship?, Lawrence R. Handley
The Geographical Bulletin
What is a mentor? I serve as a mentor for two groups: one, to offer advice, to give counsel, and basically to help out new employees within the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS); and the other, as an advisor for the Louisiana Environmental Education Association working with new teachers. With USGS, the mentoring is a function of being designated a leader within the Bureau. Because of the size of the USGS, many individuals are mentored by long distance telephone conversations or email communication. These individuals are mostly interested in administrative issues, personal advancement, and misunderstood situations with their supervisors and co-workers. …

In Memoriam O. Orland Maxfield: A Biographical Sketch, Virgil Holder
The Geographical Bulletin
O. Orland Maxfield, born in 1925, was raised on a farm near Robinson, Illinois, and he always referred to Robinson as his home. His father was a Methodist minister who died when Orland was eleven. His mother, who graduated from Northwestern University, raised him in a disciplined manner. This shows in the fact that he earned his Bachelor’s degree at George Peabody College for Teachers in three years with a double major in Geography and English, graduating in 1945. He earned his Master’s of Arts degree in Geography at Ohio State University in one year.

The Geographical Bulletin
February 21, 2004 was a sad day for all of us acquainted with C. Nicholas Raphael. On that morning, at age 66, he passed away suddenly, leaving a community he loved and one which loved him. Nick had been our dear friend and colleague for more than three decades. He will be remembered by many in the geographical profession as the editor of Gamma Theta Upsilon’s The Geographical Bulletin, a position he proudly occupied since 1987. Nick began a productive and fruitful life as the son of R. George and Angela Raphael on September 3, 1937, in Detroit, Michigan. He …

Adapting To Drought And Floods In The Semi-Arid Landscape Of Santa Cruz County, Arizona, Cynthia L. Sorrensen
Adapting To Drought And Floods In The Semi-Arid Landscape Of Santa Cruz County, Arizona, Cynthia L. Sorrensen
The Geographical Bulletin
This paper analyzes the actions of key interest groups and major institutional regulatory agreements that influence land use change and water demand in Santa Cruz County, Arizona, in order to better understand the capacity of residents in the county to adapt to hydroclimatic hazards (drought and flooding). We found that there are strong special interest groups working in the region to ensure their own livelihoods and interests. At times, the actions of these groups enhance the adaptive capacity of the county, but their actions can also conflict with each other, producing a less-clear outcome for adaptation. We also note that …

Geographer At Work: Frank Salmon, Gis Manager, Leon Yacher
The Geographical Bulletin
Frank Salmon remembers to the day when he decided Geography was going to be his career. Frank had just taken his seat before his first Geography final exam at Gateway Community Technical College when the professor announced to the class that “any of you who liked this course and want to pursue this as a major at Southern Connecticut State, I will guarantee that you will have a career when you graduate.” Not that Frank really needed this persuasion; he had loved Geography since he was a child. This first Geography class simply articulated for him what he now believes …
Adaptation To The Effects Of Suburbanization And Drought In Central Massachusetts, Troy Hill, Colin Polsky
Adaptation To The Effects Of Suburbanization And Drought In Central Massachusetts, Troy Hill, Colin Polsky
The Geographical Bulletin
Central Massachusetts receives more than 1100 mm of precipitation each year on average, with little inter-annual variation. Despite this, water supply shortfalls have become increasingly common, demanding responses (adaptations) from community water systems. This paper examines the process of adapting to drought in a ten-town study area. A grounded theory approach to data collection and analysis was used. Methods consisted of archival work and interviews, which investigated how structural and agent-based forces affect adaptation to drought. Suburbanization revealed itself as a major stress on water systems, jeopardizing and complicating efforts to adjust to water shortages. Structural forces and local actors …
Water Woes: Structure And Agency Influences On Adaptive Capacity In Southwest Kansas, Rorik Ford Peterson
Water Woes: Structure And Agency Influences On Adaptive Capacity In Southwest Kansas, Rorik Ford Peterson
The Geographical Bulletin
Concerns over the continual reduction of available groundwater in southwest Kansas have been increasing. This concern is compounded by the high dependence on irrigated agriculture and the related agribusiness industry, which is a staple to the regional economy and employs a large labor force. Future climate variation may enhance the sensitivity of the region to limited water availability. Through archival research and interviews, this study examines the impact of both structural forces (such as policy makers and legal bodies) and individual agents (local farmers, ranchers, and other citizens) on the capacity of southwest Kansas to adapt to climate variation. Although …

Undergraduates are an integral part of many university research programs. We are very pleased to showcase the efforts of some of our undergraduate students in the papers that follow, and to introduce them within the larger context of our research, here in this introduction. The Human-Environment Regional Observatory (HERO) program is a five-year research program, funded by the National Science Foundation (through an infrastructure grant) and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (through the Office of Global Programs). Our goal is to develop a research approach to monitor ongoing human-environment relationships at the local scale as they interface with the …
A Veteran Mental Health Approach Sustaining Identity Post-Military Life: A Comprehensive Overview, Darren Sosa, Lindsay Gietzen
A Veteran Mental Health Approach Sustaining Identity Post-Military Life: A Comprehensive Overview, Darren Sosa, Lindsay Gietzen
Pacific Journal of Health
Veterans and their mental health face readjustment challenges based on veteran identity, intersectionality, and experiences from their time serving in the military. This comprehensive overview and PRISMA analysis investigate the current evidence-based practices of veterans' identity and intersectionality. Specifically, psychoeducation and evidence-based practices for veterans readjusting back into their communities. A gap identified in this research’s findings calls for suggestions for future research on the veteran population and intersectionality. No specific psychoeducation or evidence-based practices tailored for identity readjustment or veteran intersectionality were found. This research constructs a tailored framework of suggestions for current and future evidence-based practices for the …

The Efficacy Of The G.R.A.C.E Matrix® In Ptsd Treatment”, Maria Grace G. Wolk, Lindsay Gietzen
Pacific Journal of Health
The purpose of this study is to explore the efficacy of the G.R.A.C.E Matrix®, a step-by-step technique of treatment for post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). This study uses case studies that serve as portrayals of adults who struggle with PTSD. The three cases, referred to as "Jamal," "Isabel," and "Joel," are based on disguised aspects of real psychotherapy patients from a psychotherapy clinic. By detailing the treatment courses of these patients, the study highlights critical clinical issues in engaging patients with evidence-based therapy. The cases illustrate how the G.R.A.C.E Matrix® treatment, beginning with written assessments and culminating in trauma-informed interventions, has …

Relationship Between Enrollment, Retention, Alumni Giving, And Financial Health At Historically Black Colleges And Universities, Kenneth Mercury
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Decreasing financial health damages an organization’s reputation and economic viability to survive. Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) leaders must strive to improve their financial health to protect their institution’s reputation and risk of closure. Grounded in strategic enrollment management theory, the purpose of this quantitative ex-post facto study was to examine the relationship between student enrollment, student retention, alumni giving, and financial health of HBCUs. The participants were 101 HBCUs collected from the National Center for Education Statistics and the Voluntary Support of Education databases, from 2020 to 2022. The results of the multiple linear regression analysis showed that …
