Pakistan@2050: Demographic Change, Future Projections, And Development Opportunities, Population Council

Population Policy and Demographic Analysis

Pakistan@2050 is a unique volume that provides comprehensive evidence and insights into the linkages between population dynamics and development. It illustrates Pakistan’s position regarding demographic transition and offers a regional comparison. The study highlights how population trends and dynamics significantly shape development outcomes, emphasizing the need to integrate these factors into both short-term and, most importantly, long-term planning and policy decisions. Long-term planning in Pakistan has faced persistent challenges related to poverty, climate change, and a tendency towards reactive rather than proactive interventions. These approaches often overlook the impact of high population growth on development gains.

It is vital to …

Libraries Faculty & Staff Publications

The authors attended the 2024 annual meeting of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) as part of a cohort of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) librarians sponsored by the partnership between the Association of College and Research Libraries (ACRL) and AAAS. We describe two sessions, one on combating misinformation and one on open science. For these topics especially, hearing the perspectives of scientists was particularly valuable and interesting to us as librarians. We share our reasoning for attending a science disciplinary conference rather than a library conference in these days when one must carefully weigh a …

No one left behind! Diversity and inclusion! Level-playing field!

Clichéd or fact?

This is a fact at Singapore Management University (SMU) as student demographics have started to change and classrooms have become more intergenerational, comprising first-generation adult learners, students returning from National Service, increasing enrolment of IB graduates, international students, and those wanting to pursue a higher degree beyond a polytechnic diploma. This diverse learner profile warrants the need to ensure that no one is left behind. SMU’s Holistic Student Development Framework (HSDF) emphasises inclusivity beyond the classroom to recognise out-of-classroom learning through a variety of learning programmes focusing on …

Wherefore Art Though Competitors? How Situational Affordances Help Differentiate Among Prosociality, Individualism, And Competition, Yi Liu, Adam W. Stivers, Ryan Murphy, Niels Van Doesum, Jeff Joireman Nov 2024

Wherefore Art Though Competitors? How Situational Affordances Help Differentiate Among Prosociality, Individualism, And Competition, Yi Liu, Adam W. Stivers, Ryan Murphy, Niels Van Doesum, Jeff Joireman

Psychology Faculty Scholarship

The Triple Dominance Measure (choosing between prosocial, individualistic, and competitive options) and the Slider Measure (“sliding” between various orientations, for example, from individualistic to prosocial) are two widely used techniques to measure social value orientation, that is, the weight individuals assign to own and others’ outcomes in interdependent situations. Surprisingly, there is only moderate correspondence between these measures, but it is unclear why and what the implications are for identifying individual differences in social value orientation. Using a dataset of 8021 participants from 31 countries and regions, this study revealed that the Slider Measure identified fewer competitors than the Triple …

Active Ageing : Pension System And Older Workers Policies In Hong Kong And Japan, Hin Yau Tsang

SOC 605 Comparative Social Policy Research Project - Student Works

Since the growing trend of aging is now a threat around the globe, there is more and more attention being devoted to the right of the elderly to participate and engage in the workplace. In order to provide policy recommendations for government departments to expedite the work environment for older people and support their integration into or return to the workplace, this paper investigates the difference of the pension system and older workers policies present in Hong Kong and Japan by secondary research methods. Currently, there are multiple investigations on the older workers’ working reasons and challenges, however, there are …

An Exploration Of The Psyche-Cosmos Interconnection By Correlating Jungian Archetypes With Universal Phenomena, José Luis Díaz Dr. Nov 2024

An Exploration Of The Psyche-Cosmos Interconnection By Correlating Jungian Archetypes With Universal Phenomena, José Luis Díaz Dr.

Journal of Conscious Evolution

This paper systematically explores the correlations between Jungian archetypes and observable phenomena in the universe, aiming to deepen the understanding of the interconnectedness between human consciousness and the cosmos. I identify the core Jungian archetypes—including the Self, the Shadow, the Anima and Animus, the Hero, and others—and establish direct correlations with specific universal phenomena such as the cosmological singularity, dark matter and dark energy, matter-antimatter symmetry, supernovae, and universal physical laws. These correlations suggest that the fundamental structures of the human psyche mirror those of the universe, supporting philosophical concepts like the microcosm-macrocosm analogy and ontological monism. The proposed correlation …

Implementing Open Educational Resources In Colleges And Universities: A Literature Review, D. Laverne Hill, Taralynn Hartsell, Jamie L. Workman, Amy Smith

Georgia Library Quarterly

The use of Open Educational Resources (OER) is becoming increasingly widespread in higher education institutions as the ease of use, equitable access, and the cost-free availability makes OER a viable option for classroom materials. Incorporating OER into the curriculum can be both beneficial and challenging for faculty. Because librarians are skilled and efficient in finding adequate resources to supplement learning, they prove to be an asset when striving to implement an OER initiative in the institution. While faculty would be the primary group to introduce many of the OER to students, it takes a collaborative effort between faculty and librarians …

Impacts Posed By Recreational Marijuana Legalization : A Global Comparison In Jurisdictions With Different Marijuana Control Policies, Weizhou Zhu

SOC 605 Comparative Social Policy Research Project - Student Works

As marijuana legalization is adopted by more and more countries, there have been a lot of debates about its benefits and downsides. Around the world, the majority of countries maintain their illegality, a few are fully open, while some decriminalize or do not enforce the prohibition laws. However, few studies have examined the different impacts brought by district cannabis control policies. This study uses the systematic review method to investigate the impacts of marijuana legalization in 5 domains and compare them on a global basis. A total of 51 articles published between January 2019 to June 2024 were selected. Policy …

Unveiling The Relationships Between Household Labor And Maternal Well‐Being, Meghan M. Bennett, Debra L. Oswald, Astrida S. Kaugars

Psychology Faculty Research and Publications

In this study, we investigated whether mothers' engagement in household labor, and perceptions of their own and partner's increased household labor, relate to maternal well-being (burnout and flourishing) and mental health (anxiety and depression). Mothers of children under the age of 18 (N = 213) completed online questionnaires. Mothers' total time spent on household labor was associated with increased odds of having clinically significant levels of anxiety and depression and lower levels of flourishing. Similarly, mothers' perceptions that they had increased their household labor was associated with burnout and increased odds of having clinically significant levels of anxiety. However, …

Uncovering Merchants’ Willingness To Wait In On-Demand Food Delivery Markets, Jian Liang, Ya Zhao, Hai Wang, Zuopeng Xiao, Jintao Ke Nov 2024

Uncovering Merchants’ Willingness To Wait In On-Demand Food Delivery Markets, Jian Liang, Ya Zhao, Hai Wang, Zuopeng Xiao, Jintao Ke

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

While traditional on-demand food delivery services help restaurants reach more customers and enable doorstep deliveries, they also come with drawbacks, such as high commission fees and limited control over the delivery process. White-label food delivery services have emerged as an alternative, ready-to-use platform for restaurants to arrange delivery for customer orders received through their applications or websites, without the constraints imposed by traditional on-demand food delivery platforms or the need to develop an in-house delivery operation. Although several studies have investigated consumer behavior when using traditional on-demand food delivery services, there is limited research on merchants’ behavior when adopting white-label …

This study aims to compare Latine men and women’s perceptions of hostile and benevolent sexist behaviors, while also examining the associations between these perceptions and Latine cultural values. Participants who identified as Latine (55 men, 57 women; Mage = 32.05, SD = 10.63) were presented with 14 scenarios reflecting hostile and benevolent sexist interactions and were asked to rate their perceptions of these interactions as sexist and caring. The findings suggest that Latine men and women perceive benevolent sexist behaviors as less sexist and more caring than hostile sexist behaviors. Latine women were also more likely than Latine men …

Emotion socialization is the process by which a child’s caregivers teach them how to understand and appropriately express emotions (Eisenberg et al., 1998). We investigated the relationship between the emotion socialization strategies experienced in childhood and mental health outcomes in young adulthood. Additionally, we examined how this relationship may differ as a function of socioeconomic status (SES).

A Fisher Information Theory Of Aesthetic Preference For Complexity, Sébastien Berquet, Hassan Aleem, Norberto M. Grzywacz Nov 2024

A Fisher Information Theory Of Aesthetic Preference For Complexity, Sébastien Berquet, Hassan Aleem, Norberto M. Grzywacz

Psychology: Faculty Publications and Other Works

When evaluating sensory stimuli, people tend to prefer those with not too little or not too much complexity. A recent theoretical proposal for this phenomenon is that preference has a direct link to the Observed Fisher Information that a stimulus carries about the environment. To make this theory complete, one must specify the model that the brain has about complexities in the world. Here, we develop this model by first obtaining the distributions of three indices of complexity measured as normalized Shannon Entropy in real-world images from seven environments. We then search for a parametric model that accounts for these …
