Cultural Betrayal Trauma Theory In A Sexual Orientation Minority Context, Zenaida Rivera
Cultural Betrayal Trauma Theory In A Sexual Orientation Minority Context, Zenaida Rivera
Wayne State University Dissertations
Sexual orientation and gender minority groups experience trauma at higher rates than their heterosexual peers (Brown & Pantalone, 2011). Additionally, studies of sexual minority individuals have shown that they experience more severe posttraumatic stress relative to heterosexual counterparts (Roberts et al., 2010). To date, efforts to explain these disparities have centered on: (1) trauma theories concerned with characteristics of the individual or their relation to the perpetrator or (2) the broader repercussions of discrimination, stigmatization, and oppression on sexual minorities. Several LGB scholars have argued that more careful and culturally competent research on the relationships between trauma exposure, LGB identity …
The Factors Causing High Food Insecurity Rates In U.S. Undergraduate Students, Natalie S. Byrd
The Factors Causing High Food Insecurity Rates In U.S. Undergraduate Students, Natalie S. Byrd
Soaring: A Journal of Undergraduate Research
The cliché of a college student surviving off ramen noodles sheds light on a deeper issue — high rates of food insecurity among undergraduate college/university students in the United States. There have been countless studies in recent years exploring the hidden causes of why an estimated 40% of students experience food insecurity as of 2022. These studies conclude three main reoccurring factors causing these high rates: costs, accessibility, and demographic characteristics. Food insecurity rates are important for higher education officials to address due to the countless physical and mental health, academic, and equity implications for the students.
Pride In Health: An Investigation Into How The Affordable Care Act, Public Accommodation Anti-Discrimination Statutes, And Other Pro-Lgbtq+ Laws Affect Health, Healthcare Affordability, And Healthcare Accessibility For The Lgbtq+ Community, John Kirkley

This study investigates the influence of pro-LGBTQ+ legislation, specifically the Affordable Care Act (ACA) Medicaid Expansion and LGBTQ+ Public Accommodation Anti-Discrimination Statutes, on general health, healthcare affordability, and accessibility among LGBTQ+ individuals in the United States. The research delves into historical and present policy impacts on health disparities within the LGBTQ+ community, offering a systematic analysis of data sourced from the Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance Survey. The research utilizes comparative statistical analysis to discern changes in health outcomes over the years 2014 to 2022, focusing on differences in general health, healthcare affordability, and accessibility between LGBTQ+ and non-LGBTQ+ respondents, as …
Using Ai For Qualitative Labeling: Consistency And Comparisons, James Mcintyre
Using Ai For Qualitative Labeling: Consistency And Comparisons, James Mcintyre
Honors Program Theses
This paper details a research study evaluating AI's ability to perform qualitative deductive coding. Multiple AI models were utilized and compared against three human coders and one expert coder. A series of 107 statements were sourced from a group discussion for a qualitative impact assessment of an organization. The AI models were provided these statements and directed to code them using the Community Capitals Framework. Two generations of AI models were evaluated. Overall, the AI achieved a fair level of agreement with the human annotators, but the alignment was far from perfect. Newer AI models did not increase agreement with …
The Voice Of Reason: The Rhetoric Of Women Politicians In A Polarized U.S. Congress, Ingrid Ryan
The Voice Of Reason: The Rhetoric Of Women Politicians In A Polarized U.S. Congress, Ingrid Ryan
Honors Program Theses
Political rhetoric can be utilized as a divisive tactic in the modern polarized age to separate the Democratic and Republican public in U.S. congressional speeches. Once holding an educational purpose in the 1980s, U.S. House representatives and senators now must focus on their political party’s issue goals to ensure their re-election. This research investigates common political rhetoric tools – while evaluating women politicians’ speeches about abortion, the 2020 U.S. Presidential election, and Donald Trump’s two impeachments – to find if they encourage partisan polarization or anti-democratic behavior. This research focuses on these speeches from U.S. House Representatives Ilhan Omar and …
Using Ai For Qualitative Labeling: Consistency And Comparisons, James Temple
Using Ai For Qualitative Labeling: Consistency And Comparisons, James Temple
Honors Program Theses
This paper continues research that evaluates the capacity of artificial intelligence (AI) to perform qualitative coding tasks. The previous study found that AI models lacked consistency with themselves and did not agree with human coded data. Since that study, AI’s general level of intelligence has increased. Hence, this study re-evaluates how well the newest set of AI models (Claude 3 and Gemini) can perform qualitative coding tasks. When tested, the new AI models perform about the same or better than previous models depending on the metric tested. While Gemini and Claude 3 do not agree with human output any more …

State of the Region Reports: Hampton Roads
This is Old Dominion University’s 25th annual State of the Region Report. While it represents the work of many people connected in various ways to the university, the report does not constitute an official viewpoint of Old Dominion, its president, Brian Hemphill, Ph.D., the Board of Visitors, the Strome College of Business, or the generous donors who support the activities of the Dragas Center for Economic Analysis and Policy.
The news, especially when compared to the previous decade, is mostly good. The region’s economy grew in 2023 and will likely grow for a fourth consecutive year in 2024. Even after …

Part 1: As Good As It Gets? The Economy Of Hampton Roads, Dragas Center For Economic Analysis And Policy, Old Dominion University
State of the Region Reports: Hampton Roads
Hampton Roads’ economy was a study in contrasts in 2024. For the first time in almost two decades, the regional economy grew in four consecutive years. A record number of individuals were in the civilian labor force and employed, and employers reported a record number of jobs. Job growth, however, lagged our peers. Now is the time to invest in key industry clusters to spur private-sector job growth in the region and build upon our recent economic fortunes.

Part 2: Defense, The Port, And Tourism: The Pillars Of The Economy, Dragas Center For Economic Analysis And Policy, Old Dominion University
State of the Region Reports: Hampton Roads
There was (mostly) good news to report about the pillars of the Hampton Roads economy in 2024. More defense spending flowed into the region. While cargo traffic declined at the Port of Virginia in 2023, the declines were mainly driven by outbound cargo traffic. The declines at the Port were also proportionally less than many other ports across the nation. Nominal hotel revenues continued to climb, but real hotel revenues fell in 2023 as occupancy rates dipped slightly. The hotel industry, however, continued to outperform the state and the nation.

Part 3: If You Zone It, They Will Come: Housing Supply In Hampton Roads, Dragas Center For Economic Analysis And Policy, Old Dominion University
State of the Region Reports: Hampton Roads
The recent rise in housing prices in Hampton Roads has priced many families out of the American dream of owning a home. Even though fewer houses sold in 2023, median single-family prices continued to rise. In this chapter, we discuss how policies and regulations may influence decisions to build and ask what can be done to increase the supply of housing in Hampton Roads.

Part 4: Public Libraries: Enriching Lives In Hampton Roads, Dragas Center For Economic Analysis And Policy, Old Dominion University
State of the Region Reports: Hampton Roads
Hampton Roads is home to 63 public libraries across 13 library systems. These public libraries do much, much more than simply lending books. Access is free, and everyone is welcome. This chapter provides an overview of Hampton Roads’ public libraries—how they function and how they are funded, and the diversity of services and resources they offer to our residents. We focus on the innovative ways that public libraries have evolved to meet their communities’ changing needs.

Part 5: Are Disability Rates Rising In Hampton Roads?, Dragas Center For Economic Analysis And Policy, Old Dominion University
State of the Region Reports: Hampton Roads
In this chapter, we examine one particular corner of a much larger disability story – those individuals who have a work history and subsequently seek to receive income from the Social Security Administration because of that disability. Contrary to what many people believe, both the number of applications for worker disability and rates of approval of those applications have trended downward in recent years. We explore the differences in disability rates and workers across Hampton Roads.

Part 6: The Graying Of Hampton Roads, Dragas Center For Economic Analysis And Policy, Old Dominion University
State of the Region Reports: Hampton Roads
In 2010, the median age of the resident population of Hampton Roads was 35.7 years. By 2019, the median age had increased to 36.8 years, rising to 37.1 years in 2021 and 37.3 years in 2022. The number of residents aged 65 and over continued to rise. How is Hampton Roads aging compared to Virginia and the United States? In this chapter, we explore how the region is aging, how it may age in the future, and how this may impact the region’s economic prospects.

The Role Of Local Knowledge In Climate Change Research, Ryan E. Mccoy
The Role Of Local Knowledge In Climate Change Research, Ryan E. Mccoy
Theses and Dissertations--Philosophy
This dissertation addresses the growing need within climate research for improvements in regional and local climate information. I argue that knowledge gaps in regional climate information constitute a form of climate injustice in which harm largely falls on regions most vulnerable to climate change. Moreover, I show that our current methods for garnering regional climate information fail to provide information on place-specific factors, such as local culture, socio-economic systems, and ecology, which mediate climate change impacts. In order to address these knowledge gaps, as well as provide information necessary for effective mitigation and adaptation, I argue for the inclusion of …

It's Worse If Superman Does It: Perceptions Of Moral Transgressions Committed By Superheroes And Supervillains, Justin Martin, Hansika Kapoor
Psychology Faculty Scholarship
Superheroes are distinguished from supervillains due to their morally relevant behavior. However, what happens when they both engage in immoral behavior? This study examined how individuals perceive moral transgressions by their favorite superhero/villain in a quasi-experimental design. In line with Social Cognitive Domain Theory and Moral Foundations Theory, transgressions related to harm and justice were assessed. Specifically, participants (N = 363, predominantly White/Caucasian and South Asian) assessed characters’ likability, character traits, and moral evaluations. In line with hypotheses, results suggested that (a) superheroes were liked more than supervillains; (b) transgressions by superheroes were more morally impermissible than those by supervillains, …

The digital landscape continually evolves with multimodality, enriching the online experience for users. Creators and marketers aim to weave subtle contextual cues from various modalities into congruent content to engage users with a harmonious message. This interplay of multimodal cues is often a crucial factor in attracting users' attention. However, this richness of multimodality presents a challenge to computational modeling, as the semantic contextual cues spanning across modalities need to be unified to capture the true holistic meaning of the multimodal content. This contextual meaning is critical in attracting user engagement as it conveys the intended message of the brand …

Family systems theory has played a primary role in the clinical development of family therapy. This study was conducted to explore the relationship between the variables, level of differentiation of self, and birth order. The researcher wanted to understand and explore the applicability of family systems theory in collectivistic cultures like India. Data from 136 participants from India, aged 18-29 was collected. DSI(R) is a self-reporting questionnaire that was filled up by the participants along with their demographic details and birth order. The results inferred that there was no significant relationship between the studied variables, indicating there are other confounding …
Physiological Indices Of Anxiety And Self-Regulation Under Task Demands And Talk Aloud, Zachary Gerber
Physiological Indices Of Anxiety And Self-Regulation Under Task Demands And Talk Aloud, Zachary Gerber
All Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Other Capstone Projects
Anxiety shows differential reactions to stress across two distinct constructs: anxious apprehension and anxious arousal. Differences are related to bilateral resting state activity differences as measured by ECG and MRI studies, cognitive coping strategies measure via mismatch between anticipated and actual outcomes and across behavioral performance measures. Of note is the lack of extension of these terms to physiological domains other than measures of brain activity. It has been posited that the brain interacts in a top-down regulatory fashion with the autonomic nervous system to coordinate bodily reactions with environmental information to bring about changes in behavior. Given brain and …
