The Impact Of Body Image On Self-Confidence In Elite Dancers, Carissa Bethel Jan 2024

The Impact Of Body Image On Self-Confidence In Elite Dancers, Carissa Bethel

Applied Sport & Performance Psychology | Literature Reviews

In athletics and the performing arts, athletes and performers are expected to maintain a healthy, strong, and athletic physique. Specific professions foster a thin body image amongst athletes, which are expected to be maintained. Pressure to maintain low weight or an athletic body has been considered a risk factor for developing body image dissatisfaction (Nascimento, Luna, Fontenelle, 2012). Previous research has shown that from a health perspective body satisfaction is one of the crucial factors in the prevention of unhealthy, weight related behaviors, especially in female athletes (Kantanista et al., 2018). The research addresses body image concerns in elite performance …

History In Fragments: What Does A Photogenetic Line Tell Us About Dialectical Images?, Santasil Mallik Jan 2024

History In Fragments: What Does A Photogenetic Line Tell Us About Dialectical Images?, Santasil Mallik

FIMS Publications

The essay explores how the composition of the photo-architectural installation A Photogenetic Line (2019) by the Mumbai-based CAMP studio redounds in stretching Walter Benjamin’s multiform conceptual schema of the ‘dialectical image’ on two essential fronts: the flash-like nature of its appearance and its monadic configuration. Decoding this function proffered by the installation, in turn, reveals a revisionary historical materialist approach that rearticulates the question of violence in light of resurgent authoritarian populisms in South Asia.

Perceiving Less But Wasting More: The Relationship Between Perceived Resource Scarcity And Consumer Food Waste, Bonnie Simpson, Rhiannon Macdonnell Mesler, Katherine White Jan 2024

Perceiving Less But Wasting More: The Relationship Between Perceived Resource Scarcity And Consumer Food Waste, Bonnie Simpson, Rhiannon Macdonnell Mesler, Katherine White

Management and Organizational Studies Publications

Consumers' food-related behaviors often culminate in significant food waste. Surprisingly however, limited attention has been given to psychological reasons why this occurs. Across four studies, this research suggests that, because perceived resource scarcity activates a resource acquisition goal, under conditions where product scarcity is not present it leads consumers to engage in inaccurate over-acquisition of resources (i.e., food), resulting in greater waste. Studies 1a (quasi-experimental field study) and 1b (lab experiment) test the role of perceived resource scarcity in predicting food acquisition and waste. Studies 2a and 2b are correlational and measure household food waste to demonstrate that resource acquisition …

Locally Greedy Characterizations Of Interim Allocations, Charles Z. Zheng Jan 2024

Locally Greedy Characterizations Of Interim Allocations, Charles Z. Zheng

Department of Economics Research Reports

The received characterizations of feasible interim allocations are mostly in the spirit of Border (1991): Fix a family of sets, each containing some player-types, and test the interim allocation under consideration against all these sets. In the published literature, such Border-like characterizations are known to be valid only in the paramodularity framework, which rules out combinatorial complexities such as matchings. This paper presents a necessity and sufficiency test for Border-like characterizations with or without paramodularity. It implies that the validity of the characterizations requires that any interim allocation about to become infeasible be locally greedy: that its domain be covered …

How Do Babies Come To Know What Babies Know?, David S. Moore, David J. Lewkowicz Jan 2024

How Do Babies Come To Know What Babies Know?, David S. Moore, David J. Lewkowicz

Pitzer Faculty Publications and Research

Elizabeth Spelke’s What Babies Know is a scholarly presentation of core knowledge theory and a masterful compendium of empirical evidence that supports it. Unfortunately, Spelke’s principal theoretical assumption is that core knowledge is simply the innate product of cognitive evolution. As such, her theory fails to explicate the developmental mechanisms underlying the emergence of the cognitive systems underlying that knowledge.

Many Hands Make Light Work: Reconciling Edu-Economical Debts For Black Males, Joyice Robinson Myers

Education Graduate Presentations

This study examines the relationship between family structure, educational attainment, and economic standing in shaping the developmental and life outcomes of Black males, especially marriage and fatherhood. Through a systematic literature review of 12 peer-reviewed studies, it explores how various family configurations impact Black males' academic achievement and economic mobility. The study applies the frameworks of Education Debt, African American Male Theory, and the Cultural Wealth and R3ISE Models to critically assess systemic barriers that contribute to cultural debt as a call for restoration. Findings emphasize the importance of family support systems and asset-based interventions that enhance cultural wealth while …

Initial findings reveal that Black women navigate dating with concerns about relationship quality and emotional depth, influenced by systemic racism …

Teaching For Transpersonal Learning, Paul Cunningham Jan 2024

Teaching For Transpersonal Learning, Paul Cunningham

International Journal of Transpersonal Studies Advance Publication Archive

This article addresses the “why,” “what,” and “how” of teaching for transpersonal learning. Why transpersonal education is relevant for addressing modern social problems and the global ecological crisis, what it is like to teach for transpersonal learning, and how transpersonal learning becomes transformative are discussed. Three promising options in technology and consciousness studies for transpersonal learning—transpersonal media, multistate studies, and entheogenic education—are described and the challenges of introducing transpersonal education into academic settings and assessing educational (student) learning outcomes are reviewed. The relevance of Mezirow’s Transformation Theory to transpersonal educational psychology, with special attention to ecological perspective transformation, is then …

Embody The Cause: Subaltern Body Protests As Resistance Tactics, Dipakshi Sarma Jan 2024

Embody The Cause: Subaltern Body Protests As Resistance Tactics, Dipakshi Sarma

Political Science Honors Projects

Gendered, classed, and racialized bodies differentially experience state-sanctioned violence and societal norms. Body protests — when the body manifests the political messages by drawing attention to itself — manifest in these intersections. Women engaging in body protests garner more attention; a body that is sexualized, controlled, and subjugated draws attention to itself as a political act. To understand this, I ask, what explains the specific tactics that women employ in acts of political resistance? By employing subaltern agency and feminist social movement theories, I use process tracing and comparative analysis of three body protest cases: the incarcerated Armagh women in …

What Do We Mean By Territoire?, Ceri Almrott

Other resources

This diagram explores the concept of territoire, illustrating its multidimensional nature as a dynamic socio-spatial system. It captures the interplay of human interaction, social structures, environmental factors, and cultural connections. The framework demonstrates how communities adapt to and shape their environments, integrating local knowledge, sustainable practices, and resource management. It highlights governance systems, traditions, and collective identity as essential for resilience and sustainability. The diagram also reflects on intangible elements like sense of place, identity, and heritage, which deepen emotional and cultural connections to the territoire. Together, these layers form a holistic approach to understanding sustainable community development.

Women’S Perspectives On Addressing The Decline Of Shea Trees In Northern Ghana, Cornelius Pienaah, Isaac Luginaah, Bipasha Baruah

Data and Test Instruments

The Shea tree holds significance in the socio-ecological landscape of northern Ghana. With the escalating impacts of climate change, the diminishing presence of Shea trees has emerged as a significant concern. From a feminist political ecology standpoint, this research focuses on understanding the factors contributing to this decline in the Upper West Region of Ghana and the adaptation and mitigation strategies women propose to address the decline. Findings from eight (8) Focus Group Discussions (FGDs) reveal an interaction between anthropogenic activities like illegal logging, mechanized farming, and recurrent bushfires and climate-related factors such as heightened prevalence of pests and diseases …

Paddlesport Safety Culture In Ireland: An Exploratory Study, John Pierce, Kevin O'Callaghan

Publications

Anecdotally, paddlesports (canoeing, kayaking, stand-up paddleboarding, and rafting) are seen as safe sports, though prior to this report little evidence was available to support this view in an Irish context. This report provides a summary of a research project exploring safety practices in Irish paddlesports. It includes the aim, objectives, research methodology, findings, and recommendations. Discussions early in the research process about how to investigate safety practices in Irish paddlesports brought a number of objectives into focus. It was agreed to compile empirical evidence on current safety practices across Irish paddlesports and to determine what, if any, additional supports may …

Developing A Conceptual Framework For Decolonizing Evaluation, Minji Cho Jan 2024

Developing A Conceptual Framework For Decolonizing Evaluation, Minji Cho

CGU Theses & Dissertations

The field of evaluation has been predominantly driven by Euro-Western perspectives, a result of their dominance in economic, geopolitical, and intellectual realms. This has led most evaluation approaches to be deeply rooted in Western worldviews. To avoid becoming instruments of neocolonialism, more decolonizing evaluation practices are necessary, emphasizing the needs of communities over the interests of donors. However, the field has a limited understanding of how decolonizing evaluation is being practiced and what the consequences are. The absence of clear guidance for decolonizing evaluation practices prevents evaluators from striving for more ethical practices. In response to these gaps, this dissertation …

Bone Traces And Modifications From Feeding By Dermestes Maculatus, B. V. Adams, Leon G. Higley Jan 2024

Bone Traces And Modifications From Feeding By Dermestes Maculatus, B. V. Adams, Leon G. Higley

School of Natural Resources: Faculty Publications

That Dermestes maculatus feeding can leave marks on bones is established in the literature - that D. maculatus routinely mark bones is not. Our results here, exposing fleshed bones to D. maculatus adults and immatures for almost two months after complete tissue removal, indicate that under natural conditions D. maculatus do not feed on bones. The key issue seems to be the ability of D. maculatus to seek new food sources versus being confined (and eventually starving) on bones. In a natural setting, once a food supply is exhausted, D. maculatus would seek new food …

Latin American Homicide (Chapter 3), Guillermo Escano Jan 2024

Latin American Homicide (Chapter 3), Guillermo Escano

School of Criminal Justice Other Graduate Student Scholarship

The urgency for studying Latin America and the Caribbean(LAC) emanates from violence rates that are remarkably higher than in most world regions. Global homicide rates have recently declined (Rogers & Pridemore, 2018; Tuttle et al., 2018). While LAC followed suit, its rates are still comparatively high, and it is home to less than 10% of the global population but about one-third of homicides. The World Health Organization defines violence as endemic if a nation reaches ten homicides per 100,000 residents. Over two-thirds of LAC, nations meet this threshold (World Health Organization, 2023), and the regional mean is above 10. The …
