Why Is Grant Lake A Reservoir? A Brief Geological And Human History, From The Pleistocene To The Present, Robert B. Marks

Eastern Sierra History Journal

Drawing on a range of archival resources and illustrative material, Prof. Marks probes why and how Grant Lake in the Eastern Sierra of California became a reservoir. The process is long and involved, and has much to do with a remote and ancient lake ultimately being developed to serve the water needs of the distant city of Los Angeles.

Epigenetics And Character Virtue Development, David S. Moore Jan 2024

Epigenetics And Character Virtue Development, David S. Moore

Pitzer Faculty Publications and Research

Current understandings of epigenetics offer some insights into the developmental origins of character virtues. Research on epigenetics has demonstrated that phenotypes depend on both genomic and non-genomic information for their development, and such is true for the development of character virtues as well. This conclusion offers significant support for the Developmental Systems perspective. Although researchers have not yet studied the role of molecular epigenetic factors in the development of character, the field of behavioral epigenetics has revealed how such factors contribute to psychological and other behavioral phenotypes in general. In particular, behavioral epigenetics research can highlight the plasticity of human …

Are Academia And Industry Listening To Each Other? A Citation Analysis Of Ux Research Methods Resources, Abigail Bakke, Leonard Dibono Jan 2024

Are Academia And Industry Listening To Each Other? A Citation Analysis Of Ux Research Methods Resources, Abigail Bakke, Leonard Dibono

English Department Publications

Technical and Professional Communication (TPC) has been facing concerns of viability, in both its relationship with industry and its ability to build a relevant and valid body of research. TPC’s disconnection with industry may be reflected in its relationship to UX as well, despite both fields’ shared values. To better understand how TPC and User Experience (UX) are relating to each other, we conducted a citation analysis of a sample of SIGDOC papers and a sample of Nielsen Norman Group (NN/g) practitioner articles focused on research methods. The SIGDOC papers tended to cite TPC sources, while the NN/g articles cited …

Evaluating Quoddy Region Archaeological Site Vulnerability To Sea Level Rise And Erosion Through The Integration Of Gis Modeling And Surveys (Data Files), Katelyn Dewater, Arthur Anderson, Gabriel Hrynick, William Kochtitzky

Geographic Information Systems Data Projects

Modeling coastal archaeological site erosion often depends on regional site databases that record sites accurately but with variable precision or do not define site extent. This case study examines the impact of sea level rise and erosion on 10 coastal archaeological sites in the Quoddy Region of Maine through the comparison of sea level rise models and field observations. Three sea level scenarios were modeled to predict the vulnerability of sites: current sea level, a 0.457 m increase (Low 2050 scenario), and a 0.914 m increase (High 2050 scenario), reflecting levels recommended by the Maine Climate Council for preparation efforts. …

Irrational Beliefs As A Mechanism Of Change In Rational Emotive Behavior Therapy, Miriam Motechin Jan 2024

Irrational Beliefs As A Mechanism Of Change In Rational Emotive Behavior Therapy, Miriam Motechin

Theses and Dissertations

This study investigated the mechanisms of change in Rational Emotive Behavior Therapy (REBT), a treatment developed by Albert Ellis that posits irrational beliefs contribute to emotional and behavioral distress. Prior research has shown REBT’s effectiveness, but the specific mechanisms remain underexplored. This research uses meta-analytic data to examine changes in irrational beliefs and their relationship to changes in emotions, behaviors and automatic thoughts. A moderately strong relationship was found in therapeutic intervention groups between changes in irrational beliefs and changes in emotions/behaviors. A similar relationship was found when looking at the long-term impact of changing irrational beliefs on emotional and …

Exploring The Drivers Of Internal Labour Migration For The Regions Of Great Britain, Heather Dickey, Maire Carroline Magante Jan 2024

Exploring The Drivers Of Internal Labour Migration For The Regions Of Great Britain, Heather Dickey, Maire Carroline Magante

Economics Department Faculty Publications

The role of internal migration in reducing regional inequalities is a common feature of classical economic theory and urban economics models. If regional migration is important in reducing spatial disparities, then understanding its causes, and barriers, is crucial. This paper explores the drivers of regional migration behaviour in Great Britain. Findings point to rigidities in housing that deter mobility across regions; and regional differences in the drivers and effects of regional migration. Our paper supports greater focus on spatial disaggregation, since migration studies conducted at the national level ignore important spatial differences in migration behaviour.

When East Meets West: Filial Modes And Family Functioning In Second-Generation Chinese-Americans, Johnny Kay Wong

Selected Full-Text Dissertations 2020-

Due to the global trend of population aging and the growing issue of elder care, research on filial norms are being conducted around the world (e.g., Lowenstein & Daatland, 2006). The current study is the first to examine filial piety in a sample of second-generation Chinese-Americans and added to the filial piety literature in four ways. First, the study confirmed both the two-factor structure of the Dual Filial Piety Scale (DFPS) with second-generation Chinese-Americans using a confirmatory factor analysis, with four items representing Reciprocal Filial Piety (RFP) and four items representing Authoritarian Filial Piety (AFP). Second, the study confirmed the …

Faculty Journal Articles

Throughout 2019 and 2020 the American University in Cairo (AUC) celebrated the centennial of its founding, supported extensively by AUC’s University Archives. This paper explores the opportunities that emerge for an archives playing the role of shaper of identity and memory when its parent organization reaches a major milestone, but also the challenges involved in such a commemoration. Beyond outlining the University Archives’ contributions to AUC’s 100th anniversary (including events, on-campus and online exhibitions and displays, and publications like magazines and a book) the paper will indicate how the run-up to such a commemoration can shape an archives’ program, for …

The Effect Of Socioeconomic Status Descriptors On Judgements About Unpunctuality, Tatiana Basáñez, Brittney Barcena, Vanessa Delgadillo, Icseel Ortiz Ayala, Angelica Ortiz, Samantha Andrade, Amber Fajardo, Cynthia Stewart

Papers from the International Association for Cross-Cultural Psychology Conferences

Three survey experiments examined the effect of cues describing a target’s socioeconomic status (SES) on participants’ judgements after the target transgressed the social norm of punctuality. Hypotheses were formulated based on Fiske’s (2018) stereotype content model. In Study 1 (N = 243) participants were randomly assigned to read a vignette describing a gender ambiguous student as low-SES (versus high-SES) arriving late to an exam and then judged the tardy student. Judges showed more leniency when the student was described as low-SES than high-SES. In Study 2 (N = 40), the target was a male job applicant arriving late …

Berta Szeps-Zuckerkandl: The Forgotten Woman In The Center Of Fin De Siècle Vienna, Riley Peterson

International ResearchScape Journal

The scholarship surrounding fin de siècle Vienna contains many cultural and intellectual cornerstones that are lauded even to this day. All participating in the Viennese coffeehouse culture of the time, artists like Gustav Klimt, musicians like Gustav Mahler, psychologists like Sigmund Freud, and authors like Arthur Schnitzler shaped their respective disciplines significantly. The social network for how these intellectuals and many others interacted is very complex. This study analyzes and maps the interactions of dozens of individuals from early 20th-century Vienna to pinpoint the social center of this culture. Intriguingly, the often-overlooked Berta Szeps-Zuckerkandl—whom leading scholar Carl Schorske only mentioned …

Social Media Management Strategies In Influencer Marketing: Lessons For Building Stakeholder Relations And Brand Crisis Management, Julia Hurt, Mary E. Beadle, Sejung Park

2024 Faculty Bibliography

Based on the two-step flow model, this study examines how social media influencers manage brands through three aspects, including content strategies, engagement, and interactivity. A content analysis was conducted to compare content marketing strategies and levels of engagement and interactivity between popular and unpopular creators. The results show popular creators post more often, post more promotional content, interact less, but receive positive praise from their followers. Their followers are more engaged. The Instagram posts tend to imitate celebrity sites and often use professional photographers rather than photos from mobile devices. Less popular creators used Instagram in a more personal fashion, …

Associations Of Blood Gas And Acid-Base Values With Motor And Language Outcomes In Preterm-Born Preschoolers, Christina Marie Dandar Jan 2024

Associations Of Blood Gas And Acid-Base Values With Motor And Language Outcomes In Preterm-Born Preschoolers, Christina Marie Dandar

Wayne State University Dissertations

Hypoxia and ischemia are of the most common causes of acquired brain injury in preterm infants and often results in damage to the periventricular areas of the preterm brain. Several biochemical indices are commonly associated with hypoxic-ischemic injury, including blood pH, base deficit (BD), oxygen, and carbon dioxide (pCO2). The aim of this study was to examine the contribution of early biochemical indexes of hypoxic-ischemic risk, particularly blood gas measures and acid-base balance measures, to neuropsychological outcome in preterm preschool-age children. I was particularly interested in the link between measures obtained either at birth, immediately after birth, or within the …

Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) is crucial for equipping individuals with the competences needed to address the pressing social, economic, and environmental challenges of our time. Despite the recognized potential of service-learning in cultivating competences that can promote sustainable development, there is a lack of empirical research exploring the development of these competences among students. Hence, this study examined the effectiveness of service-learning as a pedagogical approach to ESD in fostering essential competences among students. The research involved 43 groups of students, who engaged in addressing various sustainable development issues through service-learning. A thematic analysis of students’ written reflections revealed …

Department of Social Work - Faculty Scholarship

There are millions of street-connected children worldwide, with thousands estimated in Kenya. Many child-serving organizations - including Agape Children’s Ministry (Agape) in western Kenya - provide rehabilitation and family reintegration services to remove children from the streets and reunite them with their families. This study aims to elucidate barriers and facilitators of Agape’s Family Strengthening Program (FSP) and elicit feedback. Twelve children and 12 caregivers who participated in the FSP, as well as 11 Agape staff, participated in semi-structured, in-depth interviews for this study. Salient child/caregiver themes include: (1) spirituality/religion, (2) reflections on the FSP, (3) reflections on Agape, and …

Department of Social Work - Faculty Scholarship

Scholars and advocates are at odds about how to achieve higher levels of child safety and permanency. Calls for change include the recent upEND focus on eradication of child welfare services to a radical refocusing of the present system towards prevention/early intervention. To clarify the implications of reform over abolition, we seek to portray a future in which the abolition of child welfare has occurred, in juxtaposition to maintaining four core elements of established child maltreatment programmes around the world: (1) receiving and responding to community signals about the risk to children; (2) assessment of need coupled with a proportionate …
