Archives & Special Collections Finding Aids
The Helen “Nordie” Nordquist Collection is very large and diverse. Much of the material is original to the All American Girls Professional Baseball League such as artifacts, photographs, ephemera, documents, and much more. Nordquist played in the final four seasons of the league, from 1951-1954. Nearly all of the photographs in the collection have all the players identified in them. She had a sense of the significance of what the league represented and what she was a part of and collected and kept all she could. She dedicated decades later in life to researching and reconstructing the AAGPBL history down …
The Link Between Social Media And Body Image Issues Among Youth In The United States, James Krzymowski
The Link Between Social Media And Body Image Issues Among Youth In The United States, James Krzymowski
Ballard Brief
Social media has a pervasive impact on body image in the United States, influencing one’s mental, physical, and social health. Body image issues encompass negative feelings and experiences related to one's physical appearance and are characterized by a preoccupation with perceived physical defects. This occurrence is especially common among youth. The harmful effects of constant exposure to idealized images, unrealistic beauty standards, and the influence of social media influencers are wide-ranging and severe. This brief focuses on the United States because of the competitive culture, the high cosmetic surgery rates, and leadership in social media use. Contributing factors such as …
Obstetric Fistulas In Sub-Saharan Africa, Katie Whitcomb
Obstetric Fistulas In Sub-Saharan Africa, Katie Whitcomb
Ballard Brief
An obstetric fistula is a hole in the vaginal canal, either to the bladder or the rectum. It is a childbirth complication caused by obstructed, prolonged labor. Sub-Saharan African mothers are particularly vulnerable to fistulas if they are poor, rural living, or young. Additionally, cultural barriers, distrust of Western health facilities, and birthing traditions play a role in the pervasiveness of obstetric fistulas in modernity. A hole in the bladder or rectum leads to loss of control over urination or defecation. However, there are secondary consequences, such as mental illness and social stigma, that cause just as much suffering as …
Millennium School: An Experiment In Transpersonal Education For Early Adolescents, Jenny Wade
Millennium School: An Experiment In Transpersonal Education For Early Adolescents, Jenny Wade
International Journal of Transpersonal Studies Advance Publication Archive
This article describes the design, curriculum, culture, and values of an experiment in transpersonal education for young adolescents, the Millennium middle school in San Francisco, CA. The overarching design of the school was to help children exiting the latency period of child development, who exhibit the rudiments of Wade’s Authentic consciousness or Maslow’s Self-actualization motive stage, consolidate that level rather than losing it, as the vast majority do, because of social pressures that make earlier stages of development more adaptable in most contemporary societies. Early adolescence is a time when peer pressure, individuation from the family, and puberty are strong …
Lack Of Access To Quality Education For Rural Indigenous Communities In Chiapas, Mexico, Elizabeth Sanchez
Lack Of Access To Quality Education For Rural Indigenous Communities In Chiapas, Mexico, Elizabeth Sanchez
Ballard Brief
The Mexican state of Chiapas has the highest indigenous population in the country and the least educated population of any state. The confluence of historical government neglect (in infrastructure and politics), gender inequality, language barriers, and low family income of these populations seriously hinders indigenous Chiapanecos from receiving a high-quality education—if any education at all. A history of indigenous marginalization and government unwillingness to recognize and remedy this creates a serious roadblock to any permanent change in indigenous education levels. These low levels of education lead to an increase in reproductive health illiteracy, lower occupational attainment and advancement, and decreased …

Senatus Exesa: Explaining the Abuse of Procedure in the U.S. Congress
Abstract
On October 3rd, 2023, Rep. Kevin McCarthy became the first Speaker of the House of Representatives to be forcibly removed from his position as Speaker of the lower chamber of Congress. Though dramatic, this episode is indicative of the current state of American politics. At a time when political polarization between the two parties has never been higher, norms that were once considered the nuclear option are now understood as the norm. Cynicism and distrust of Congress is at an all-time high, with many Americans disabused …
Island Blue Spaces: A Deeper Exploration, Nicole Kras
Island Blue Spaces: A Deeper Exploration, Nicole Kras
Publications and Research
Preliminary research has shown that blue spaces provide many benefits to health and well-being. In response to the call for a deeper investigation into this area of inquiry, the current study seeks input from those (N=37) who live on islands in the Northeast region of the United States. Previous findings about the significance of having access to nature, identifying it as a favorite part and most influential reason for living on an island, were rearmed. Distinctions between island and mainland life were highlighted, emphasizing the importance of community. This study also brought to light participants’ grave concerns about issues such …

Strategy Committees On European Public Boards: Characteristics And Tasks, Małgorzata Kuczara
European Management Studies
Purpose: Despite the extensive debate over the years about the involvement of boards in strategy, little is known about special committees dedicated to strategy. This paper aims to enhance understanding of strategy committees (SCs) within European public boards by addressing two key questions: What are the characteristics of SCs, and what tasks do they undertake?
Design/Methodology/Approach: Document analysis from 81 SCs established by boards of directors and supervisory boards in companies listed on nine major European stock exchanges.
Findings: We find that SCs predominantly focus on tasks aligned with the board’s strategic role. These tasks involve shaping …
The Relationship Between Innovation Strategy And Performance With The Moderating Role Of Environmental Dynamism, Patryk Dziurski
The Relationship Between Innovation Strategy And Performance With The Moderating Role Of Environmental Dynamism, Patryk Dziurski
European Management Studies
Purpose: This study aims to investigate the relationship between innovation strategy and performance with a moderating role of environmental dynamism in Poland. Innovation strategy and performance are popular topics of many studies, but the relationship between them is complex, as previous research reports mixed results. On the one hand, exploration, exploitation and ambidexterity innovation strategies have positive effects on performance, but on the other hand some research indicates a negative relationship. These mixed results are often explained by the dynamism of environment.
Design/methodology/approach: The paper presents the results of a quantitate research that uses CAWI techniques (Computer-Assisted Web …

Purpose: This study seeks to demonstrate the relationship between the components that form employee engagement using the IT services industry, which faces specific issues due to its constantly changing environment and reliance on skilled talent.
Design/Methodology: A structural equation modelling (SEM) with an importance performance map analysis (IPMA) was used to examine answers to surveys from 221 IT executives.
Findings: The study reveals that there is a strong positive effect of psychological ownership (β = 0.457) on employee engagement than OCB (β = 0.404) through POS. The IPMA supports the results that OCB’s importance and performance are high …
Differentiation Versus Denial: Impact Of Messaging About Player Transactions On Team Reputation, Ticket Sales, And Sports Channel Subscriptions, Joseph R. Blaney, Stephen K. Hunt
Differentiation Versus Denial: Impact Of Messaging About Player Transactions On Team Reputation, Ticket Sales, And Sports Channel Subscriptions, Joseph R. Blaney, Stephen K. Hunt
Faculty Publications - Communications
Part of a concerted effort to quantitatively test claims made throughout image repair research, this study provides a greater understanding of the effectiveness of the differentiation strategy over simple denial and provides further clarification for related claims made in image repair research. Sports teams who differentiate major roster changes from a team rebuild score higher on measures of reputation, intent to purchase tickets, and intent to subscribe to premium sports channels. On behalf of practitioners, scholars should consider the conditions under which the ability to claim differentiation is plausible with a loyal clientele or customer base.

Re-Evaluating The Land Use Impacts Of Utility-Scale Solar Energy Development In Virginia, Damian Pitt, Aaron R. Berryhill, Jennifer M. Ciminelli
L. Douglas Wilder School of Government and Public Affairs Publications
Utility-scale solar energy is the fastest-growing source of energy in the United States, and it provides many benefits related to climate change mitigation, pollution reduction, and tax revenue for the impacted localities. However, the rapid expansion of this technology raises some concerns, including the possible loss of farmland, forest land, and sensitive ecosystems, as well as potential environmental justice impacts from concentrating these facilities in low-income and/or minority communities.
In Virginia, 94 utility-scale solar facilities – defined as systems with a generating capacity of 5 megawatts (MW) AC or greater – have been built since December 2016. Hundreds more projects, …

Not All Staying Is The Same: Unpacking Retention And Turnover In Academic Libraries, Samantha Guss, Jennifer Stout, Sojourna Cunningham
Not All Staying Is The Same: Unpacking Retention And Turnover In Academic Libraries, Samantha Guss, Jennifer Stout, Sojourna Cunningham
VCU Libraries Faculty and Staff Publications
Although the academic libraries profession recognizes that retention is a complex and important issue, especially for advancing diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) initiatives and supporting BIPOC librarians, the library literature largely avoids defining or providing a measurement for retention at all. In this paper we propose an original nuanced definition of retention. We draw from existing research on workplace dynamics and library culture and our qualitative exploration of academic librarians who have left jobs before they intended. Our research investigated what it was like for them to stay at those jobs after they realized they didn’t want to stay long-term. …

Beyond The Stacks: The Modern Evolution Of Law Libraries, James Wier
Beyond The Stacks: The Modern Evolution Of Law Libraries, James Wier
About the Buildings
There is a certain timelessness to the sensory experience of the Reading Room: the scratching and shuffling of paperwork, the muffled thump of a closing book, the dull hum of fans in the warmer months. But in recent years, something decidedly more modern has joined in the chorus: the quiet staccato of laptop keyboards.
The emergence of computers and the internet has reshaped nearly every aspect of how libraries operate. At the same time, trends in legal education and the profession have led to changes in collections management, research-based curriculum, scholarship, the student experience, and other aspects of how law …

Teaching There...And Back Again: Building A Practice Of Reflective Teaching, Amanda Crego-Emley, Alicia G. Vaandering, Chris Cassaday
Public Services Faculty Presentations
How do you move forward to improve your teaching approaches and pedagogical decisions over time? Research has shown that reflective teaching provides instructors with opportunities to examine their classroom teaching, learning objects, and assessment. This reflection can inspire strategic new approaches, guide changes that improve student learning, and promote a holistic evaluation of instructional practice. For academic library instructors, dedicating time to reflective work can be challenging, but participating in this work as part of an iterative practice, either independently or within a community, can improve accountability, strengthen departmental collaboration, and foster exciting new ideas.

The Inclusion Of Metacognition In Source Evaluation Instruction, Anthony Tardiff
The Inclusion Of Metacognition In Source Evaluation Instruction, Anthony Tardiff
Foley Library Scholarship
Though the ACRL Framework holds metacognition as crucial to exercising information literacy, its emphasis was reduced from prominence in early drafts to a single mention in the final document. At the same time, few of the frequently-taught sets of source evaluation criteria include a step for self-awareness. This raises the question: do librarians explicitly teach metacognitive concepts when they teach source evaluation? Online library guides about source evaluation from various colleges and universities in Washington state were analyzed, and librarians who taught source evaluation were surveyed to determine whether and to what extent metacognitive concepts were included as part of …

The Effects Of Empathic Reactions To The Overturning Of Roe V. Wade On Campaign Participation And Voter Turnout: Evidence From The 2022 U.S. Midterm Elections, Cigdem Sirin, José Villalobos
Selected Works Temporary Series
In June 2022, the U.S. Supreme Court’s Dobbs ruling overturned Roe v. Wade, reversing the nearly 50-year-old landmark decision that affirmed a woman’s constitutional right to abortion. Several months later, voters turned out in record numbers for the 2022 midterms, though a widely predicted “Red Wave” vote did not materialize. There has since been speculation that overturning Roe v. Wade played a crucial role in the midterms, generating a “Blue Tsunami” or “Roevember” driven largely by young, pro-choice women voting out of self-interest. We posit instead that group empathy was the key motivational mechanism in the link between opposition to …
Which Dimensions Of Entrepreneurial Orientation Drive Firm Performance In Hostile Environments? Lessons From The Pandemic Crisis, Marcin Suder
European Management Studies
Purpose: This study aims to analyze the roles of dimensions of entrepreneurial orientation (EO) – risk- -taking, proactiveness, and innovativeness – within the context of a crisis. Specifically, it evaluates the perspectives of entrepreneurs and managers regarding the impact of these dimensions on firm performance in the hostile environment created by the COVID-19 pandemic. The study adopts a unique perspective, focusing on retrospective assessments by entrepreneurs and managers rather than traditional econometric measurement techniques.
Design/methodology/approach: A quantitative study was conducted, collecting data from 145 owners, managers, and supervisors of small companies in the printing industry in Poland. Respondents …
