Habitat Characterization Of American Badgers (Taxidea Taxus) Of Northern California, Mitchell Victoria Jan 2024

Habitat Characterization Of American Badgers (Taxidea Taxus) Of Northern California, Mitchell Victoria

Master's Theses

American badgers (Taxidea taxus) are a semi fossorial mammal that lives in grassland and open prairie ecosystems as well as coastal prairies, agricultural fields, deserts, and deforested habitats. Many researchers have published work on badgers, but we still require more information on their ecology. The American badger is a semi fossorial, solitary, predatory mammal of grassland ecosystems. They are classified as mesopredators when compared to larger apex predators such as brown bears, wolves, and pumas. However, when larger carnivores are absent, Badgers become apex predators of their ecosystems. Los Vaqueros Watershed in Brentwood, California, was my study site because badgers …

Heart Rate Variability Biofeedback As A Treatment For Military Ptsd: A Meta-Analysis, Jordan Kenemore, Grant Benham, Ruby Charak, Juventino Hernandez Rodriguez

Psychological Science Faculty Publications

Introduction: Emerging research has provided tentative support for the use of heart rate variability biofeedback (HRVB) as a treatment for several psychological disorders, with meta-analyses providing compelling evidence for HRVB as a promising treatment for anxiety, depression, and PTSD. Given the prevalence of PTSD in military veterans and the comparatively lower benefit and higher attrition rate of traditional psychological treatment for PTSD relative to civilian counterparts, it is important to examine complementary and alternative treatment approaches such as HRVB in this population. Although studies of HRVB for PTSD have been conducted with military veterans, they have involved relatively small sample …

Pediatric Chronic Pain And Anxiety And Depression Symptoms: The Association With Parenting Stress, Alison Vrabec Jan 2024

Pediatric Chronic Pain And Anxiety And Depression Symptoms: The Association With Parenting Stress, Alison Vrabec

Theses - ALL

As many as 38% of children experience chronic pain, and of these children about 26% have a comorbid mental health diagnosis. Parents of children with a chronic health condition demonstrate elevations in stress when compared to parents with healthy children. It is likely that when chronic pain is comorbid with mental health disorders, parents may experience greater stress. Social isolation and financial burdens may be associated with parenting stress, which may be even higher in parents of children with chronic pain compared to parents of children without chronic pain. While most pediatric chronic pain literature focuses on how parenting behaviors …

Relationship Between Resting-State Frontal Alpha Asymmetry And Autism Characteristics Among Neurotypically Developing And Autistic Children And Adolescents, Jarryd Osborne Jan 2024

Relationship Between Resting-State Frontal Alpha Asymmetry And Autism Characteristics Among Neurotypically Developing And Autistic Children And Adolescents, Jarryd Osborne

Theses - ALL

Autism is a heterogenous neurodevelopmental diagnosis associated with deficits in social communication and the presence of repetitive behaviors and sensory differences. While diagnostic criteria are behavioral, these behaviors are thought to arise from atypicalities in the brain. While many studies investigating autism have focused on understanding the neural processes underlying task performance, few have focused on understanding the brain at rest. This is critical, however, as the state of the brain before a stimulus is presented (i.e. its resting state) impacts how it responds to incoming information. Frontal alpha asymmetry, the comparison between alpha frequency power in the left and …

A Cross-Sectional Study Of Hpv Vaccination Intentions Among College Students, Lyric Tully Jan 2024

A Cross-Sectional Study Of Hpv Vaccination Intentions Among College Students, Lyric Tully

Theses - ALL

Human papillomavirus (HPV) is the most prevalent sexually transmitted infection in the United States, however only 10 to 48.92% of college students aged 18-26 report being vaccinated against HPV. Although constructs within the Health Belief Model (HBM) and the Theory of Planned Behavior (TPB) have been shown to explain variance in HPV vaccine intentions, theory-based interventions to increase HPV vaccination intentions have not yielded promising results. The 5C model of vaccination readiness was developed to understand vaccine hesitancy and contains a unique construct, collective responsibility, previously not used to examine HPV vaccine behavior. This cross-sectional, internet-based survey study with college …

Discrimination, Sleep Disturbances, And Drinking Frequency Among Racially Diverse Adolescents: A Follow-Up Prospective Study, Emma Schillinger

Theses - ALL

Previous research has highlighted the role of discrimination experiences in the development and escalation of sleep disturbances and alcohol use among diverse adolescents. However, few studies have examined the role of discrimination experiences in the reciprocal sleep-alcohol relationship prospectively. The present study examined the prospective relationship among discrimination experiences, sleep disturbances, and alcohol use, and tested racial disparities within this risk pathway. Secondary analyses were conducted on the data drawn from a two-wave (Years 1 and 2; Y1 and Y2, respectively) online survey study of 414 high school students (Mage = 15.07 [SD = 1.19]; 57% female; 41% Black; 22% …

Morphodynamic Diversity Of Alluvial River Systems In The Upper Yellow River Watershed, Qinghai-Tibet Plateau, Xiwei Guo Jan 2024

Morphodynamic Diversity Of Alluvial River Systems In The Upper Yellow River Watershed, Qinghai-Tibet Plateau, Xiwei Guo

Dissertations - ALL

Alluvial rivers exhibit diverse forms and dynamic processes based on the physiographic configuration and in response to the interactions between water flow, sediment transport, and channel morphology. The current understanding of the formative and evolutionary processes controlling channel morphology and the dynamics remains incomplete, as it falls short of explaining and predicting a variety of channel forms and processes. Using data derived from remote sensing analysis and field measurement, this dissertation investigates the morphological characteristics, lateral adjustment, and channel-floodplain interactions of meandering and anabranching rivers in a pristine, high-altitude environment in the source watershed of the Yellow River, eastern Qinghai-Tibet …

Dissertations - ALL

This dissertation examines the changes in China's social and demographic landscape and their effects on adult children's relationships with their elderly parents. It focuses on how modernization, urban migration, lower birth rates, and an aging population have transformed traditional filial piety norms and intergenerational expectations in Chinese society. The first paper aims to investigate the association between children’s economic status and parents’ self-rated health and examine the potential mediating mechanisms for this relationship. Utilizing the 2014 wave of the China Longitudinal Aging Social Survey (CLASS), this study predicted parent’s self-rated health from children’s economic status using inverse probability of treatment …

Preference For Online Psychotherapy: A Comparison Study Of Stigma, Attitudes, And Intentions, Travis Stewart

Dissertations - ALL

Abstract Objective: There is clear evidence that rates of mental health disorders among college students are increasing, and many students experiencing mental health difficulties do not engage in treatment. Some evidence suggests that telehealth may be a way to increase access to care. Research conducted prior to the pandemic suggests that students generally favor in-person treatment over online treatment, but little data has been collected following the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic to clarify if this trend persists. The proposed research sought to understand how treatment perceptions may have shifted following the COVID-19 pandemic. Methods: Data was collected from 350 …
