Killjoy? Augustine On Pageantry, Peter Kaufman Mar 2024

Killjoy? Augustine On Pageantry, Peter Kaufman

Jepson School of Leadership Studies articles, book chapters and other publications

Augustine’s position on civic spectacles should be evaluated in connection with his fears about a resurgence of paganism in late Roman North Africa. Notwithstanding contemporary claims that those fears were cover for early fifth-century prelatical efforts to manage commercial and political culture, evidence suggests that paganism in North Africa survived and was seductive.

The Experience Of Knowledge Workers In Remote Environments During The Covid-19 Pandemic, Dale F. Knapp Mar 2024

The Experience Of Knowledge Workers In Remote Environments During The Covid-19 Pandemic, Dale F. Knapp

Doctor of Education Program Dissertations

When regional quarantine restrictions were rapidly implemented in March 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic, knowledge workers were forced to vacate their traditional shared office spaces and transition to remote work environments. This unprecedented mass exodus from traditional in-person physical workplaces was facilitated by existing and new software and technology that allowed workers to remain connected and working. This phenomenological study explored the lived experiences and perceptions of knowledge workers who experienced this transition to a full-time remote work environment. The study also examined how knowledge workers perceived work performance relative to their experience during the COVID-19 pandemic. Data were …

Does Anyone Have Any Questions? Encouraging Question-Asking Behaviors In Online And In-Person Graduate Student & Faculty Workshops, Hannah Gascho Rempel, Adam Lindsley, Clara Llebot

Transforming Libraries for Graduate Students

Academic libraries frequently offer workshops to graduate students and faculty as a way to develop their information literacy skills, including building skills with citation managers, literature review searching, and data management. In many academic libraries in-person delivery of workshops was the norm prior to the COVID-19 global pandemic, but during the pandemic online workshops were the only option. Workshop participants now appreciate being able to choose between the modality that works for them. In our library, we now regularly offer most workshops in both in-person and synchronous online modalities. This change in how we offer workshops allows us the opportunity …

Teaching Students To Read Regression Results: A Statistical Literacy Lesson Plan For Librarians, Giovanna Badia Mar 2024

Teaching Students To Read Regression Results: A Statistical Literacy Lesson Plan For Librarians, Giovanna Badia

Transforming Libraries for Graduate Students

Descriptive and inferential statistics are taught to students in many disciplines. More classroom time is often spent on the theory behind different statistical methods that investigate relationships between variables rather than on how to interpret the results obtained to answer the research question that started the process. While statistical software (such as R, Stata, and SPSS) has made it easier to undertake regression with any dataset, the output produced remains challenging to understand and explain to intended audiences. To address this issue, the author created a 90-minute workshop that teaches students how to read tables of descriptive statistics and linear …

Making Scholarly Publishing Work For You: Empowering Graduate Students To Understand The Scholarly Publishing Ecosystem Through A Graduate Academy Seminar, Haley Walton, Liz Milewicz, Will Shaw, Paolo Mangiafico, Kate Dickson

Transforming Libraries for Graduate Students

Understanding the landscape of scholarly publishing is an essential competency for graduate students, whether they publish during their studies or after they’ve entered their professional fields. But the scholarly publishing ecosystem can be complicated to navigate, and students cannot always rely on their advisors and colleagues to demystify the processes. To help graduate students achieve their goals when sharing their research, the ScholarWorks Center for Scholarly Publishing at the Duke University Libraries (https://scholarworks.duke.edu/) taught “Navigating Scholarly Publishing,” a five-day, interdisciplinary course introducing essential aspects of scholarly communication and empowering students to make informed, proactive decisions about sharing their …

Graduate Student’S Productivity Tools For Literature Review Research And Writing In The Age Of Ai, Carmen Orth-Alfie, Paul Thomas

Transforming Libraries for Graduate Students

In the fast-evolving world of academia, it is not hyperbole to say that generative AI and algorithm-based productivity tools like ChatGPT, Research Rabbit, and LitMap are quickly becoming transformative forces, reshaping the way graduate students (among many groups) approach the research and writing of thesis/dissertation literature reviews. But while the plethora of possibilities engendered by generative productivity tools is in many ways remarkable, the technology itself can often be overwhelming—not only for the graduate students, but also for us as librarians and information professionals supporting independent researchers from any discipline. Indeed, the ever-growing number of AI tools on the market …

Police Officer Perceptions Of Parenting Experience Changes Following An On-Duty Child Death, Jennifer Sellers Mar 2024

Police Officer Perceptions Of Parenting Experience Changes Following An On-Duty Child Death, Jennifer Sellers

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Law enforcement officers (LEOs) work in careers that can be demanding, stressful, and traumatizing. Although researchers have explored vicarious, or secondary, trauma as it relates to a LEO bringing their experiences at work into the home environment, influencing their spouse or partner’s mental and physical well-being, they have not yet investigated how a LEO’s experience of a child death while on-duty might affect their parenting styles. The purpose of this qualitative study was to better understand the parenting styles that LEOs use or change when they have experienced a traumatic incident at work, specifically a child death. The study was …

Clinicians’ Experiences Of Using Schema-Focused Therapy In Black Americans With Panic Disorder, Martin E. Akanaefu Mar 2024

Clinicians’ Experiences Of Using Schema-Focused Therapy In Black Americans With Panic Disorder, Martin E. Akanaefu

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Black Americans have a history of racism, oppression, subjugation, and discrimination, which could increase the risk of developing panic disorder. Because panic disorder and other chronic psychological problems resist Beck’s short cognitive therapy and other interventions that overlook the roots of psychological problems, schema-focused therapy has been adopted more conveniently over the most recent years for their effective treatment. In this study, clinicians’ experiences of using schema-focused therapy with Black Americans with panic disorder was explored. The concept that grounded this study was the integrated schema-focused model, a convenient clinical model that integrates several models of schema therapy. Generic qualitative …

School of Education Faculty Publications

Social interactions are crucial for many aspects of development. One developmentally important milestone is joint visual attention (JVA), or shared attention between child and adult on an object, person, or event. Adults support infants’ development of JVA by structuring the input they receive, with the goal of infants learning to use JVA to communicate. When family members are separated from the infants in their lives, video chat sessions between children and distant relatives allow for shared back-and-forth interaction (turn taking) across the screen, but JVA is complicated by screen mediation. During video chat, when a participant is looking or pointing …

Faculty Mentors' Influence On Latino/A/X Stem Undergraduates' Stem Identity Development, Sandy Cerda-Lezama

Dissertations and Theses

Despite Latino/a/x college student attendance rising substantially over the past decades, their graduation rates do not match the increased admission rates. In addition, Latino/a/x students are considerably under-represented in STEM. However, research suggests that when these students are encouraged by social partners to have meaningful participation and given resources such as mentoring, this eases the barriers they experience. The current study utilized interviews with 11 Latino/a/x STEM undergraduates (aged 18-29) to understand how faculty mentors influence their STEM identity development. Students shared answers about how faculty promoted and inhibited their STEM identity development through conversations about their sense of competence, …

This brief summarizes findings from a recent study that used data from SNAP offices across 10 states to examine the impact of SNAP interview waivers on SNAP caseloads from January 5th to April 30th of 2021. Findings reveal that counties that implemented the …

International Asylum Law In The U.S. Supreme Court, Lorin Utsch Mar 2024

International Asylum Law In The U.S. Supreme Court, Lorin Utsch

Undergraduate Honors Theses

The role of international law within the United States legislative system is unclear and fluctuating. The extent to which the United States keeps its international commitments is informed by the application of international law in the country’s highest court, the Supreme Court. The Court’s use of international law varies by case, but consistently applies international law so as to maximize domestic interests. These interests may be of strategic, legal, or ideological value. The Supreme Court cites international asylum law in order to clarify domestic statutes, safeguard domestic sovereignty, and to reemphasize the Court’s preference for domestic statutes over international legal …

Fostering Team Resilience Through Innovation Models In Healthcare Research & Development, Michael A. Vinegra

Seton Hall University Dissertations and Theses (ETDs)

This study evaluated the interaction between team climate, resilience, and innovation process. Studies of team resilience (within and outside of healthcare) have traditionally focused on the collective behaviors and activities of high resilience and high performing teams, and the process by which they purposefully fostered team resilience among their members. Many of the studies considered the macro-level environment in which a team operated, in other words, the culture or the climate of an organization, as a key factor or input into the potential resilience of a team. The majority of the literature examined these resilience behaviors in planned innovation process …

Fold In The Cheese? An Approach To Teaching Qualitative Data Analysis To Students, Jennifer Jackson Phd Mar 2024

Fold In The Cheese? An Approach To Teaching Qualitative Data Analysis To Students, Jennifer Jackson Phd

The Qualitative Report

There are many elements of qualitative data analysis that may appear intangible to novice researchers. In this article, I present an approach to a data analysis workshop with students, where I do my best to avoid the instruction to “fold in the cheese,” as per the television series Schitt’s Creek. Students attend 90-minute workshops where they use an assortment of buttons to practice different strategies of qualitative analysis. The tactile mechanism of sorting objects has proven invaluable in workshops, as it helps students to physically organize their thoughts and takes pressure off to find the “right” answer. The nature of …

Techno-Legal Solutionism: Regulating Children's Online Safety In The United States, Maria P. Angel, Danah Boyd Mar 2024

Techno-Legal Solutionism: Regulating Children's Online Safety In The United States, Maria P. Angel, Danah Boyd

Scholarly Works

Convinced that social media is directly harming children, policymakers have started to introduce legislation that requires technology companies to be safe by design through “duty of care” provisions. Unlike regulations that focus on product safety, these bills incorporate technosolutionist logics into regulation by presuming that technology companies can remedy complex harms like mental health duress and bullying if their products were only designed better. In this paper, we unpack the theory of change at the center of the “duty of care” included in the “Kids Online Safety Act” (KOSA). We argue that techno-legal solutionism is both ineffective as a framework …

Hiding In Plain Sight: How Corporations Can Save The National Park Service, Emily H. Rector Mar 2024

Hiding In Plain Sight: How Corporations Can Save The National Park Service, Emily H. Rector

Arkansas Law Review

Since its inception, the privatization of the National Park Service has been a concern amongst conservationists. Recently, the topic gained more attention as the Trump Administration advocated for privatizing certain aspects of the parks. The dual purpose of the National Park Service, that of conservation and recreational efforts, has created conflict throughout the years. This Comment argues that Congress should update how the National Park Service manages concessioners. Full privatization is not needed, nor do private companies need to be kicked out of the parks. Part II of this Comment will present a history of the National Park Service, focusing …

Setting The Record Straight: Why The Nba Needs To Officially Adopt Aba Statistics, Roy E. Brownell Ii

Arkansas Law Review

In the case of the legal settlement between the (merger of the NBA and ABA, one of those legacies is that the NBA chooses not to officially recognize the ABA’s statistics. By arguing in favor of the NBA officially adopting ABA statistics, this Article addresses a question that lies at the intersection of law, race, sports, history, and corporate policy. Part II discusses the 1976 legal settlement between the two leagues. Part III, in turn, analyzes concerns over morality and why they weigh heavily in support of the NBA acknowledging ABA records. Part IV offers an evaluation of historical factors …

Optimization Of Banks’ Value – Practical Challenges, Jan Koleśnik, Jacek Nadolski Mar 2024

Optimization Of Banks’ Value – Practical Challenges, Jan Koleśnik, Jacek Nadolski

Journal of Banking and Financial Economics

The aim of the article is to verify the conceptual model of integrated optimization of a bank’s value, which enables the integration of the risk management process with business processes while maintaining compromise between the safety (stability) of a bank’s operations and striving to maximize its value. The model is an attempt at a comprehensive solution to such dilemmas as shaping a bank’s value ex ante, not ex post. Verifi cation of the model has shown that the model works in accordance with the adopted assumptions and leads to the achievement of the basic goal for which it was constructed. …
