Coal In Modern Japanese History, Tomoki Shimanishi
Coal In Modern Japanese History, Tomoki Shimanishi
Japanese Society and Culture
This study investigates the relationship between coal and the modern Japanese economy from a historical perspective. Because Japan has utilized coal since the dawn of industrialization, we focus on various aspects, such as a primary energy source, a trade good, and a substance of environmental burden.
(1) Coal was not only an export good but also the most important primary energy source for Japan’s industrialization. However, coal imports grew after WWI. After all, the amount of imported coal surpassed domestic coal production in the late 1960s. (2) In the end of the 19th century, major coal mines abandoned the butty …
Density In The Coastal High Hazard Area: How Florida Local Governments Regulate New Residential Development In Flood Zones, Abdul Samad Agha
Density In The Coastal High Hazard Area: How Florida Local Governments Regulate New Residential Development In Flood Zones, Abdul Samad Agha
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
This research examines Florida local government policies that address residential development in the places where people, property, and infrastructure are most at risk from both coastal as well as inland storm surges with a purpose of identifying policy norms and variations. In Florida, these at-risk areas are categorized as Coastal High Hazard Areas (CHHA). Under Florida Statutes, the CHHA is defined as the area below the elevation of a Category 1 storm surge line and are those places most likely to be significantly damaged or submerged by sea water. Florida requires that local governments designate CHHA areas within the local …
Sociocultural Factors, Definitions, And Experiences Of Intimate Partner Violence Among Latina And Hispanic Women, Vanessa Centelles
Sociocultural Factors, Definitions, And Experiences Of Intimate Partner Violence Among Latina And Hispanic Women, Vanessa Centelles
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Intimate partner violence (IPV) is a pressing public health concern in the United States (US), particularly for women. Some studies have shown that Hispanic and Latina women are at an elevated risk of experiencing IPV due to a notable passiveness of violence among traditional Hispanic and Latina women. Thus, it is crucial for research to examine the effects of sociocultural variables—such as cultural orientation, gender norm beliefs, and ethnic identity—on IPV within this demographic, particularly for women in the US. Furthermore, while the experiences of IPV victimization among Hispanic and Latina women have begun to be recognized in the broader …

Barriers: Location, Functionality, And Method Of Access In Childhood Pool/Spa Submersion Incidents, United States, 2000-2017, Alison Miller, Kristina R. Anderson, William D. Ramos
International Journal of Aquatic Research and Education
Drowning is a leading cause of fatality among children in the United States, and residential pools/spas currently account for as much as 80% of these submersion incidents. This study reviewed narrative case reports obtained from the United States Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) to understand barrier location, type, and functionality as methods of pool/spa access for childhood submersion incidents. Retroactive analysis of 1,523 fatal and non-fatal submersion incidents among children aged 13 years old and younger was conducted using the CPSC in depth investigation dataset from 2000-2017. Narrative descriptions were coded according to the attributes of barrier location, functionality, and …
Perceived And Real Water Competency And Drowning Risk Among Adults, Teresa Stanley, Kevin Moran, Dawn Garbett, Alan Ovens
Perceived And Real Water Competency And Drowning Risk Among Adults, Teresa Stanley, Kevin Moran, Dawn Garbett, Alan Ovens
International Journal of Aquatic Research and Education
Traditionally, public understanding of drowning survival has focused on swimming capacity, often measured by how far a person can swim. With respect to the high incidence of adult drowning in high-income countries, using the more inclusive concept of water competency may yield a more comprehensive explanatory framework for understanding the reasons behind these drownings. Any competency base required to survive a drowning situation is dynamic, complex, and multi-faceted. Furthermore, perceptions of risk and capacity to cope with that risk are likely to be pivotal to the avoidance of drowning. Adults’ perceived water competence was measured against their actual water competence …
Mapping The Jurisprudence Of The Facebook Court, Tao Huang
Mapping The Jurisprudence Of The Facebook Court, Tao Huang
Buffalo Law Review
The Oversight Board of Facebook (now Meta) has been described as a “court.” Acting like a judicial body, it adjudicates disputes about content moderation decisions of Meta. In some sense, the Board is a great experiment: it enables us, for the first time, to observe, analyze, and assess how private platforms can borrow the model of judicial review to enhance their governance, how the new platform laws have differed from and interacted with the old State laws, and what new principles, rules, and methods will emerge in this process of interaction, accommodation, and innovation. These developments constitute a crucial part …
Demystifying Shibboleth: Adapting To Web Browser Privacy Changes, Simon Robins, Ben Daigle
Demystifying Shibboleth: Adapting To Web Browser Privacy Changes, Simon Robins, Ben Daigle
Roesch Library Faculty Publications
University of Dayton Libraries added Shibboleth as an additional form of authentication for its licensed e-resources beginning in summer 2023. A major impetus for pursuing Shibboleth are the upcoming web browser changes that will obfuscate users’ IP addresses, set to occur in later 2023 and 2024 and something which will likely disrupt on-campus IP range access via EZproxy. Implementation of Shibboleth for an initial round of fifty-five e-resource platforms was relatively quick as a result of the University of Dayton’s participation in the InCommon Federation of U.S. higher education institutions, also known as an “authentication federation.” Methods for achieving the …

Environmental Policy And Audit Pricing, Monika K. Rabarison, Ibrajim Siraj, Bin Wang
School of Economics and Finance Faculty Publications
This paper examines the effect of environmental policy stringency (EPS) on audit pricing. By exploiting the exogenous variation in environmental policies across 26 countries, we find that firms in countries with more stringent environmental policies incur lower audit fees. The inverse association is more pronounced in common law countries, in countries with a higher level of public enforcement of regulations and in countries with more investor protection. The lower audit fees are also more prominent for firms that are followed by more analysts and firms that have a greater institutional ownership. Furthermore, we find that firms in countries with strong …

After The Storm: Associations Of Hope And Post-Traumatic Growth In Hurricane Ida Recovery In Younger And Older Adults, Piper J. Bordes
LSU Master's Theses
In recent years, there has been an increase in interest among researchers to understand the impact of severe weather events on measures of health and well-being across the adult lifespan. Previous studies have shown that older age and state hope may act as protective factors that are associated with reduced mental health impacts of hurricanes and flooding. While most prior studies have examined the physical and mental health impacts of severe weather events, very few studies have examined post-traumatic growth in a disaster context, and virtually no prior studies have directly compared younger and older adult samples. Therefore, the present …
The Effects Of The Mystery Motivator On Attendance In An Undergraduate Population, Hannah Eriksen
The Effects Of The Mystery Motivator On Attendance In An Undergraduate Population, Hannah Eriksen
Honors College Theses
The present study sought to determine the effects of the Mystery Motivator behavioral intervention on attendance in an introductory psychology course. At a medium sized university in the Midwest, one class participated in the study. Ultimately, the Mystery Motivator was ineffective at increasing the percentage of enrolled students that attended class each day, however other notable findings were observed. For example, social validity measures indicated that of the students who voluntarily completed the survey, mostly liked the intervention and would want other classes to implement similar programs. There were several limitations identified in the current study and future research should …

Whoever You Want Me To Be: Personality And Incentives, Andrew Mcgee, Peter Mcgee
Economics Faculty Publications and Presentations
What can employers learn from personality tests when applicants have incentives to misrepresent themselves? Using a within-subject, laboratory experiment, we compare personality measures with and without incentives for misrepresentation. Incentivized personality measures are weakly to moderately correlated with non-incentivized measures in all treatments. When test-takers are given a job ad indicating that an extrovert (introvert) is desired, extroversion measures are positively (negatively) correlated with IQ. Among other characteristics, only locus of control appears related to faking on personality measures. Our findings highlight the identification challenges in measuring personality and the potential for correlations between incentivized personality measures and other traits.
Spatial Patterns Of Building Damages And Associated Socio-Economic Factors By Hurricane Ian, Md Zakaria Salim
Spatial Patterns Of Building Damages And Associated Socio-Economic Factors By Hurricane Ian, Md Zakaria Salim
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Literature shows that communities with different socio-economic conditions suffer from different levels of damage in disasters. In addition to the physical intensity of hazards, such disparities are also related to varying abilities to prepare for and respond to natural hazards. The study analyzes the spatial patterns of building damage in Hurricane Ian in 2022 and investigates the socio-economic disparities related to building damage. Specifically, this study employs NASA’s Damage Proxy Map (DPM2) to analyze Ian's spatial patterns of building damage. Then, it uses statistical analysis to assess the relationship between building damage and various physical and socio-economic variables at building …

Mean-variance analysis and the capital asset pricing model provide many useful insights for investors who want to measure and manage risk. However, their focus on short-term returns is of limited use and potentially misleading for investors with long horizons. A value investing approach suggests that risk might be better measured by long-run uncertainty about asset income than by short-run uncertainty about asset prices.

Black Students’ Perceived Socioemotional Safety On College Campuses, Mia Nobrega-Jason, Martha-Grace Abel, Peter Cannella
[Archive] Belmont University Research Symposium (BURS)
Research indicates that Black students experience college differently than their white counterparts; often, their minority racial status exposes them to discrimination and unfair treatment (Eschemann, 2020; Griffith et al., 2019; Pyke, 2018; Stotzer et al., 2012). These racialized incidents contribute to perceived socioemotional safety among Black students, including fear and experiences of bullying, exclusion, intolerance, hate speech, mental health, academic performance, and opportunities (Eschemann, 2020; Garces et al., 2022; Griffith et al., 2019; Pyke, 2018; Stotzer et al., 2012; Woldolff et al. 2011). The goal of this research is to explore the correlations between racial marginalization and discrimination and the …

Heteronormative Hegemonic Gender Performances On Dating Apps, Mary E. Mcintosh, Chase Robbins, Ethan Kleveter
[Archive] Belmont University Research Symposium (BURS)
Gender is the socially constructed norms, expectations, and roles assigned based on biological sex. Thus, gender is the actions and behaviors expected of men and women, while sex is a set of biological checkboxes used to categorize bodies into the male/female binary (Lewontin, 1991; Lorber, 1993). Both sex and gender are continually constructed, maintained, and reinforced through social interactions and formative gender performances (Martin, 2004; Schwalbe, 1998; West & Zimmerman, 1987). Contemporarily, these hegemonic expectations of doing gender are perpetuated by modern technology, such as online dating and/or dating apps. When reinforcing gender norms, most dating apps establish a space …

Background Theory and correlational research indicate organizational leadership and climate are important for successful implementation of evidence‑based practices (EBPs) in healthcare settings; however, experimental evidence is lacking. We addressed this gap using data from the WISDOM (Working to Implement and Sustain Digital Outcome Measures) hybrid type III effectiveness‑implementation trial. Primary outcomes from WISDOM indicated the Leadership and Organizational Change for Implementation (LOCI) strategy improved fidelity to measurement‑based care (MBC) in youth mental health services. In this study, we tested LOCI’s hypothesized mechanisms of change, namely: (1) LOCI will improve implementation and transformational leadership, which in turn will (2) mediate LOCI’s …

Dopamine is a versatile neurotransmitter with implications in many domains, including anxiety and effortful control. Where high levels of effortful control are often regarded as adaptive, other work suggests that high levels of effortful control may be a risk factor for anxiety. Dopamine signaling may be key in understanding these relations. Eye blink rate is a non-invasive proxy metric of midbrain dopamine activity. However, much work with eye blink rate has been constrained to screen-based tasks which lack in ecological validity. We tested whether changes in eye blink rate during a naturalistic effortful control task differ as a function of …

17O-excess is a relatively new water isotope parameter that could potentially provide useful information about the hydrological cycle. Previous works focusing on 17O-excess in polar regions suggest that it primarily tracks moisture source relative humidity, but little is known about how to interpret 17O-excess data in lower latitudes. Here we present quasi-hourly triple oxygen isotope data of precipitation collected from two tropical cyclones in Texas and Louisiana in 2020 to understand the impacts of environmental and meteorological processes on the 17O-excess of low-to mid-latitude precipitation. We find that at both hourly timescales and the event scale, 17O-excess is strongly correlated …

Images in the Charles Clarke Circus Photographs Collection document the Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus in the 1920s. Clarke, a leaper in the world-renowned aerial act, The Clarkonians, would have been in a relatively unique position to capture views of the circus from the vantage point of an insider. The resulting images carry the weight of that perspective. The photographs document important aspects of the circus, showing performers like Lillian Leitzel and May Wirth, spectacle wardrobe, practices and performances in the ring, and quieter moments behind the big top.

Introductory Geology Laboratory Students' Learnings From And Perceptions Of Physical And Virtual Polarizing Light Microscopes – An Exploratory Mixed Methods Study, Christy M. Bebeau
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Undergraduate geoscience laboratory courses provide hands-on learning about earth materials. However thin section analysis is not typically included in introductory geology laboratories, likely due to the polarizing light microscope (PLM) costs. Therefore, there is a lack of research about the educational outcomes of novices learning these skills.
In this inquiry, I conducted mixed methods research about novice students' learning of thin section analysis in an introductory geology laboratory and evaluated learning and perception differences between students who used a virtual PLM and those who used a physical PLM. I collected data from Creative Exercise (CE) assessments in student midterm and …
