Exploring The Use Of Trauma-Informed Care Practices In Extension, Caitlin O'Brien, Martie Gillen Apr 2024

Exploring The Use Of Trauma-Informed Care Practices In Extension, Caitlin O'Brien, Martie Gillen

Journal of Human Sciences and Extension

A content analysis of 63 land-grant Extension university websites was conducted to examine the promotion of trauma-informed care (TIC) through the sharing of resources, providing instructive webinars and/or in-person events, and offering comprehensive programs. While many Extension universities are sharing resources, only nine universities (14%) featured robust TIC Extension programs, and 40% shared no TIC information. Additionally, we found no indication of internal education programs across the universities on adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) and TIC practices for Extension faculty and staff. These findings highlight opportunities to increase efforts with the public as well as internally within Extension.

Digital Comics Subscription Service Usage And Its Impact On Printed Comic Buying Habits: The Digital Comics Subscription Loop, Isaac Swindle

Book Publishing Final Research Papers

This study developed a digital comics subscription loop that borrows from consumer loyalty research done in publishing and marketing studies. The proposed loop uses comic publisher’s proprietary subscription platforms as a “book showroom” to allow consumers to sample titles, driving physical sales. Original survey data was then gathered about comic book consumers’ usage of digital subscription platforms and what drives them to make physical purchases. The data was then compared to the proposed model, finding significant cross-medium consumption, as well as many reported completions of the Digital Comics Subscription Loop. The survey data found that over 80 percent of respondents …

Addressing Workplace Violence In Healthcare, Eric Crane

M.S. in Leadership

This research paper explores the prevalence, consequences, and mitigation strategies for workplace violence in healthcare. The literature focuses on the importance of leadership’s involvement of the implementation of change, providing programing, and obtaining buy-in from staff to combat what has consistently been a factor leading to employee burnout, assaultive behavior, and compromised patient safety. It shows that workplace violence has been a constant in healthcare, however, has escalated post COVID-19 pandemic. Research and statistics show that workplace violence in healthcare is more prevalent than in other fields and is on the rise. A multiple-choice survey was conducted using Survey Monkey, …

Aesthetic Exclusion Within American Capitalist Culture: Lgbtq Students At Gettysburg College And The Creative Reappropriation Of Clothing To Forge Personal And Communal Identity, James M. Mikulski

Student Publications

For LGBTQ individuals whose identity expression transgresses heteronormative aesthetic values, mass production and its prioritization of a heteronormative consumer base for profit create feelings of otherness and ostracism. Previous anthropological theory on mass production and advertising recognizes the transference of meaning onto material culture through marketing and identifies the generic symbolic meaning that carbon-copy, mass-produced products hold. Theory and research surrounding colonial encounters attest to power imbalances wherein material culture is imposed on a powerless group, and marginalized individuals react through rejection or creative reappropriation of the material culture, which provides a basis for examining the power imbalance between corporations …

On Fire And Water: The Intersection Of Wetlands And Burning Strategies In Managing The Anthropogenic Plant Communities Of Yosemite National Park, Douglas Deur, Rochelle Bloom Apr 2024

On Fire And Water: The Intersection Of Wetlands And Burning Strategies In Managing The Anthropogenic Plant Communities Of Yosemite National Park, Douglas Deur, Rochelle Bloom

Anthropology Faculty Publications and Presentations

The existing literature confirms that Native American tribes historically enhanced culturally preferred plant communities through periodic burning in what is today Yosemite National Park; in turn, beginning with nineteenth-century park development, fire suppression contributed to conifer and shrub encroachment on anthropogenic meadows and other culturally significant habitats. However, we contend that traditional burning practices cannot be understood without considering the pronounced cultural role of wetland habitats and species, and the intersection between burning practices and wetland plant communities among tribes of the Sierra Nevada Range. Our ethnographic investigations revealed that a majority of culturally important plants identified by tribal members …

Changes in land-use practices have been a central element of human adaptation to Holocene climate change. Many practices that result in the short-term stabilization of socio-natural systems, however, have longer-term, unanticipated consequences that present cascading challenges for human subsistence strategies and opportunities for subsequent adaptations. Investigating complex sequences of interaction between climate change and human land-use in the past—rather than short-term causes and effects—is therefore essential for understanding processes of adaptation and change, but this approach has been stymied by a lack of suitably-scaled paleoecological data. Through a highresolution paleoecological analysis, we provide a 7000-year history of changing climate and …

The X-Minute Commute City As A Planning Paradigm: An Evaluation Using Commute And Wellbeing Data From The Singapore Life Panel, Sock Yong Phang, Yeng Cong Wong, Stephen Hoskins

ROSA Journal Articles and Publications

The x-minute city has emerged as a popular concept in transport planning in the past decade. Usually associated with planning for 15-minute neighbourhoods, cities such as Sydney and Singapore have expanded the concept to include setting time targets for commutes. In Singapore, transport planners have committed to long term goals of 20minute neighbourhoods and a 45-minute city (for commuting trips) by 2040. This paper uses a dataset for 2,535 Singapore residents aged 55 to 75 years to investigate three related questions important for evaluating the 45-minute city goal: the predictors of long commutes; the relationship between commute time and life …

Winners And Losers: Emotional Shifts Across Elections Are Conveyed By A Politician’S Smile, Carl Senior, Patrick A. Stewart, Erik Bucy, Nick Lee

Political Science Faculty Publications and Presentations

The human smile can convey both rewarding and affiliative social intent and thus has significant utility in politics, where the ability to bond with and reassure voters is vital to electoral success. We examine experimental evidence from the 2019 UK general election to investigate the influence of a politician’s reward or affiliative smile on voter emotions. It was hypothesised that the winner’s affiliative smile would engender positive affect across all partisan groups compared to the winner’s reward smile display. Participants from a nationally representative sample were shown campaign footage containing both types of smiles from the leaders of the main …

Limb Stiffness Increases With Hopping Frequency And Sprinting Speed In Elite Sprinters, Laurent Dorvilier Apr 2024

Limb Stiffness Increases With Hopping Frequency And Sprinting Speed In Elite Sprinters, Laurent Dorvilier

ALL - Honors Theses

During sprinting and hopping, the lower limbs act as a mechanical spring as it compresses and recoils to store and release elastic potential energy during each step. This is important because for individuals such as high performing sprinters, the stiffer the spring acting limb is, the more efficient it will be for the sprinter to maintain maximal velocity and optimal performance. The basis of this experiment lies in the fact that the mechanics of the lower limbs are modeled using to the mechanics of a spring, therefore, to calculate an approximate limb stiffness, Hooke’s Law can be used. Hooke’s Law …

School Choice: An Analysis Of State And Federal Level Data And Conversations, Tyler Lindner

ALL - Honors Theses

In this paper, I will attempt to answer two questions: 1) why has school choice legislation been successfully passed at the state level, but not the federal level; and 2) have the school choice programs implemented at the state level been successful? To answer the first, I will conduct a political analysis of state governments and our current federal government. To answer the second, I will analyze two different school choice programs (Florida’s and Wisconsin’s) and consider success based on academic achievement, standardized test scores, level of competition in area public schools, enrollment in 2 and 4 year colleges and …

Unraveling Cuban Exceptionalism: Cold War Dynamics And Lobbying Strategies, Zoe Hovde Apr 2024

Unraveling Cuban Exceptionalism: Cold War Dynamics And Lobbying Strategies, Zoe Hovde

Research Honors

Immigrant inequality becomes most apparent with the privileges granted to the Cuban-American expatriate community. Cuban exceptionalism was fostered most explicitly through the Cuban Adjustment Act of 1966 and has remained in effect since. The preservation of this exceptionalism brings forth the question of the conditions continuing to support it. Previous studies give theoretical approaches, including “policy capture” and “new Cuban” negligence, to exceptionalism, as well as argue for human rights considerations by the United States. However, they fail to observe the collective influence of anti-Communist sentiments, comparisons to Venezuelans, attitudes of Cuban-Americans, and lobbying. This study achieves just that. It …

Functionality Appreciation And Male Body Image: An Exploration Of Expand Your Horizon, Self-Objectification, And Male Role Norms In College Men, Jayden Erie

Research Honors

Expand Your Horizon (Alleva et al., 2015) is a writing intervention that asks participants to reflect on the functional capabilities of their bodies, and it has been shown to be effective at improving body image and reducing self-objectification in groups of women. However, this intervention has never been applied to men. The current study sought to investigate the efficacy of the Expand Your Horizon (EYH) intervention at improving body image in a sample of college men and to examine correlations between functionality appreciation, body appreciation, self-objectification, and endorsement of traditional male role norms. Male-identifying students were recruited from Illinois Wesleyan …

Impacts Of Ride-Hailing On Energy And The Environment: A Systematic Review, Tamara L. Sheldon, Rubal Dua Apr 2024

Impacts Of Ride-Hailing On Energy And The Environment: A Systematic Review, Tamara L. Sheldon, Rubal Dua

Faculty Publications

Ride-hailing has expanded substantially around the globe over the last decade and is likely to be an integral part of future transportation systems. We perform a systematic review of the literature on energy and environmental impacts of ride-hailing. In general, empirical papers find that ride-hailing has increased congestion, vehicle miles traveled, and emissions. However, theoretical papers overwhelmingly point to the potential for energy and emissions reductions in a future with increased electrification and pooling. Future research addressing the gap between observed and predicted impacts is warranted.
