UK CARES Faculty Publications

Background and Objectives Physician burnout is rampant, and physician retention is increasingly hard. It is unclear how burnout impacts intent to leave an organization. We sought to determine how physician burnout and professional fulfillment impact pediatric physicians’ intent to leave (ITL) an organization.

Design and Methods We performed 120, 1:1 semi-structured interviews of our pediatric faculty and used the themes therefrom to develop a Likert-scale based, 22-question battery of their current work experience. We created a faculty climate survey by combining those questions with a standardized instrument that assesses burnout and professional fulfillment. We surveyed pediatric and pediatric-affiliated (e.g. pediatric …

Exploring The Interrelationship Between Anxiety, Academic Apathy, And Avoidance In Community College Students, Katey R. Leverson

Education Doctorate Dissertations

The purpose of this quantitative study was to investigate aspects of mental health and the approaches students take when coping with stress. Specifically, this study sought to understand the interrelationship between anxiety levels, feelings of academic apathy, and the use of avoidance coping strategies. Students from seven public, two-year colleges within a Midwest college and university system served as this study’s sample. Data collection took the form of a non-experimental self-report structure and included the use of three empirically established and valid measures: The Self-rating Anxiety Scale (SAS), Bresso’s Academic Burnout Questionnaire, and the Coping Inventory for Stressful Situations (CISS). …

Loose Purse Strings, Loose Cultures: How Resource Increase Affects Cultural Tightness-Looseness And Creativity In Large And Small Organizations, Caleb Chun Kwan Chu Apr 2024

Loose Purse Strings, Loose Cultures: How Resource Increase Affects Cultural Tightness-Looseness And Creativity In Large And Small Organizations, Caleb Chun Kwan Chu

Dissertations and Theses Collection (Open Access)

For over a decade, cultural tightness-looseness (TL) has established itself as a culture construct that is useful in diverse contexts at multiple levels. While most TL research has focused on TL consequences, less attention has been paid to TL antecedents. This dissertation proposes resource increase as a TL predictor and uses a resource-based perspective to review and extend extant TL literature. I empirically examine the effect of resource increase on incremental and radical creativity as mediated by TL at the team level. I also explore the moderating effect of organizational size on these team-level relationships. The data were drawn from …

Ceo Polychronicity And Firm Resilience, Qianliang Xia Apr 2024

Ceo Polychronicity And Firm Resilience, Qianliang Xia

Dissertations and Theses Collection (Open Access)

In my dissertation, I examined the effect of CEO polychronicity on firm resilience. Building on the upper echelons theory, I argue that polychronic CEOs could divide their attention to multitask, which might prevent firms with extreme risk with more information acquired and backup plans reserved; in addition, polychronic CEOs should be more capable of handling the threats and disruptions. Thus, polychronic CEOs help build firm resilience. In addition, I propose the six moderators that could influence the effect of CEO polychronicity on firm resilience including market competition, market complexity, innovation capability, financial slack, TMT size and CEO duality. I collected …

Prevalence Of Adverse Childhood Experiences And Its Dose-Response Association With Anxiety-Related Stress Symptoms In Young Adults Ages 18 To 44 Years Old In The United States, Kenechukwu O. Nwosu

Dissertations and Theses (Open Access)

Introduction: Adverse childhood experiences are common in the United States with about 64% of the population affected. Adverse childhood experiences are predictors of many chronic diseases including mental illnesses like anxiety. Though non-Hispanic whites are mostly afflicted by anxiety compared to their racial counterparts, minority races like non- Hispanic Black/African Americans disproportionately suffer more dire consequences due to the chronicity of untreated conditions which often result from lack of access to care among other barriers. Methods: This is a retrospective cross-sectional study. BRFSS 2022 data set was used to identify 56,598 respondents, ages 18 to 44 years old for analysis. …

Controlling The Narrative: The Effects Of Media Coverage On Fear Of Crime And Socio-Political Ideology, Andrew Koppelman Apr 2024

Controlling The Narrative: The Effects Of Media Coverage On Fear Of Crime And Socio-Political Ideology, Andrew Koppelman

Theses

Several decades of study have established an understanding that media have a unique power to influence the perspectives and worldviews of audiences. This phenomenon has been explored through the lenses of Social Learning and Cultivation theory, wherein media appeal to base human tendencies of self-preservation and teaches audiences how to maximize rewards for their actions by acting as a sort of instructor or friendly warning from members of the community. While prior studies have suggested the presence of this effect, little research has been devoted to understanding the ways that this may influence behaviors in viewers. My research seeks to …

An Evaluation Of The Teach-Back Method For Training Functional Analysis Methodology, Bethany Christie Apr 2024

An Evaluation Of The Teach-Back Method For Training Functional Analysis Methodology, Bethany Christie

Theses

Behavior analysts conduct functional analyses to identify the environmental contingencies maintaining challenging behavior, which allows them to develop a function-based treatment plan. Behavioral staff must be fully trained on functional analysis methodology before conducting the analysis. A common way to train staff to conduct a functional analysis is through behavioral skills training (BST), but BST is time consuming and includes numerous materials. Teach-back, a widely used training method in healthcare settings, requires less time and no materials. Currently, there is little research on the effectiveness of the teach-back method for teaching behavioral techniques, and there is no research on the …

Rural Parent Viewpoints Of What Makes College Possible: A Q Methodology Study, Carol Cutler White, Diane D. Chapman

The Rural Educator

Prior research on college choice indicates parents are the preferred source of information about college, yet little research exists from the viewpoint of parents, and even less research from the viewpoint of rural and minoritized parents. Using Q methodology, this study explored rural parent viewpoints of what makes college possible. The study was framed in social capital, community cultural wealth, and Perna’s conceptual model of college choice. Factor analysis showed five distinct viewpoints and three consensus viewpoints among the parents. The five distinct factor viewpoints focused on academic achievement, college costs, the influence of family and friends, hard work, and …

The Relationships Between Personality, Perceived Social Support, And Structure Of Friend Groups, Carolyn Lowe, Ella Marks, Maddie Wiseman, Emma Sarin Apr 2024

The Relationships Between Personality, Perceived Social Support, And Structure Of Friend Groups, Carolyn Lowe, Ella Marks, Maddie Wiseman, Emma Sarin

[Archive] Belmont University Research Symposium (BURS)

Friendship formation has been studied by many psychologists, focusing predominately on connectedness within the friendship and less focused on variation of characteristics within the group that influence group dynamic (Laakasu et. al., 2016). Personality traits are a large contributing factor when determining relationship satisfaction, specifically Neuroticism and Extraversion. Having high Neuroticism has shown to be a consistent predictor of low relationship quality (Finn, Mite, & Neyer, 2013). On the contrary, Extraversion’s positive affect (i.e. characterized as being cheerful, energetic, and social) is associated with better relationship outcomes (Lyubomirsky, King, & Deiner, 2005). Undergraduate students (N = 50) completed a survey …

Animal Biographies: Measuring The Efficacy Of Empathy Adjacent Language, Mackenzie R. Bennett

Boise State Graduate Student Projects

With the guidance of a 2019 briefing document from the Seattle Aquarium, Zoo Boise created a new type of exhibit signage meant to encourage personal connection with its animals and empathetic engagement that will hopefully translate to more concern for wildlife conservation in zoo visitors. This new signage provides personal information, such as names, birth dates, and life histories, on the individual animals at Zoo Boise. This is in contrast with traditional zoo exhibit signage, which lists impersonal, species-level information alone. In order to test the efficacy of the new signage in eliciting empathetic engagement, we conducted a comparative study …

How Does This End?: The Ukraine War And The Future Of Russia, Jonathan M. Acuff, Hannah N. Clegg

Intelligence and Security Studies

We analyze a range of future scenarios for Russia related to the Ukraine War. Although regime change is a publicly-stated objective for several leaders of NATO countries, we find very little prospect for it. The Russian economy has largely evaded the effects of the sanctions. Despite enormous casualties and incompetence in the management of the war, both Putin and the war remain popular with the Russian public. Contrary to most analysis to date, the Wagner Group mutiny of June 2023 is not an indication of Putin’s weakness, but his strength. The coercive mechanisms of the Russian state remain intact. Indeed, …
