Social Media And The Court: Exploring Impacts, Challenges, And Legal Considerations In The Digital Age, Jordan Gruce

University Honors College

Social media has become a greater concern to the judicial system as mistrials and overturned convictions continue to take place because of internet-related juror misconduct. This paper sought to understand the implications of social media on the criminal justice system through its use by jurors, judges, attorneys, and individuals outside of the courtroom. It was found that information regarding criminal cases presented online is often negative, biased, and sensationalized, and frequently contains prejudicial evidence that can undermine a defendant’s right to a fair trial by an impartial jury. Jurors may commit misconduct by researching a case online or by communicating …

“It’S Your Fault”: The Overcriminalization And Self-Fulfilling Prophecy In The Imprisonment Of African American Males In America, Jonnishae Bennett

University Honors College

African American men have been subjected to the abuse and neglect of America’s Criminal Justice System for centuries. Such subjection has made them victims of systematic racism and prejudice; however, they have been depicted as everything other than victims. Societies’ continuous rejection of them as anything other than criminal, has forced them into the confines of imprisonment. The basis of their imprisonment can be directly connected to history’s congestion of the African American community. The utilization of the prison system has become a new-found version of enslavement. Labels attached to African American men have remained consistent with America’s overcriminalization of …

This research paper provides a closer insight at the wide-ranging impacts of incarceration. Reviewing interviews, data analysis, and long-term studies provides a clear perspective of how damaging incarceration can be to the incarcerated, their families, friends, and community. The findings show that prison takes a significant toll on someone's mental health, both during their time inside and even after they are released. Keeping The Light On: Academic Librarians And Burnout, Jason D. Phillips, Laura Pitts, Jessica Riedmueller, Joanna Warren May 2024

Keeping The Light On: Academic Librarians And Burnout, Jason D. Phillips, Laura Pitts, Jessica Riedmueller, Joanna Warren

The Southeastern Librarian

There is substantial research about sources of burnout among academic librarians; however, very little addresses the impact of the local environment. Responding to regional and institutional shifts while still trying to uphold the values of librarianship such as providing confidential and free access to information can quickly lead to mental, emotional, and physical exhaustion, classic symptoms of burnout. A panel discussion was presented at the Arkansas Library Association (ArLA) / Southeast Library Association (SELA) Joint Conference, on Saturday, October 14, 2023. Academic librarians from different Southern states discussed their local environments, their libraries’ responses to recent events, and their strategies …

Effects Of Ethanol On Gaba Transaminase, Mary Corrigan May 2024

Effects Of Ethanol On Gaba Transaminase, Mary Corrigan

Master's Theses

Ethanol is the primary active ingredient in alcoholic beverages, and functions in the body as a central nervous system (CNS) depressant. The overt effects ethanol has on the body, e.g. diminished cognitive ability, loss of motor control, slurred speech, impaired balance, etc., are well documented. While the behavioral consequences of consumption are well understood, how ethanol actually functions on a mechanistic level to elicit those effects has yet to be satisfactorily elucidated.

The structural homology between ethanol and the C3 and C4 carbons of gamma-hydroxybutyric acid (GABA), the major inhibitory neurotransmitter in the mature CNS, has led us to hypothesize …

Faking Being Well: Evaluating The Everyday Experiences Of University Students With Chronic Pain, Hannah Ditzenberger

Master's Theses

The purpose of this project is to learn how University of Northern Colorado students with chronic pain understand their identity formation considering three intersecting factors: their transition to college, their experience of chronic pain, and their ability to engage in common practices associated with university life. Sociology is rich in literature surrounding the experiences of people with chronic illness and pain and their understanding of themselves, but the experiences of college students with chronic pain are limited. This phenomenological study relies on social psychology theories related to illness narratives, biographic disruptions, and, more broadly, self-narratives and self-presentation in its analysis. …

A Geospatial Analysis Of Patterns In Neighborhood Characteristics And United States Professional Sports Stadium Relocations From 1922-2022, Kara Logan

Master's Theses

In the United States of America, 135 stadiums for new or relocating teams have been constructed between 1970 and 2020 (Bradbury et al., 2022, p. 3). Within those years, researchers, journalists, and community members have examined the impact of those new stadiums on local communities, including economic, environmental, and residential impacts. However, the current scope of literature consists of a considerable number of case studies that examine a single stadium or mega-event, such as the Olympics.

This study will determine what patterns, if any, exist between the demographic and housing characteristics between the stadiums that major league United States professional …

How To Get Away With Insider Trading And How To Stop It?, Blade H. Kisler

Honors Theses

The realm of investing, while promising, is often clouded by complexity and opacity, exacerbated by the prevalence of insider trading. This unethical practice allows select individuals to amass vast fortunes by exploiting confidential information unavailable to the public. Particularly alarming is the possibility of insider trading within Congress, where lawmakers wield privileged access to non-public information and could possibly engage in lucrative stock transactions. This paper delves into specific coincidences of Congressional stock trading to underscore the systemic nature of this phenomenon among influential figures.

Honors Theses

This literary review examines the different psychological perspectives on the relationship between social media usage and empathy. Specifically, it discusses the association by expanding on the fields of cognitive psychology, neuropsychology, clinical psychology, and some evolutionary psychology. I define empathy and discuss its developmental journey, its cognitive functions, its neurobiological processes, its possible damage caused by social media usage, and its effects on physical and mental health. Lastly, I argue that research focusing on high levels of social media usage and its relationship with levels of empathy should focus on creating an elaborate longitudinal study to gain more information on …

Potential For United States Participation In The European Union’S Digital Services Act, Catherine Hatfield May 2024

Potential For United States Participation In The European Union’S Digital Services Act, Catherine Hatfield

Honors Theses

The regulation or lack thereof of social media has become a hot-button issue in the majority of the Western world. Although the United States has made several attempts to pass widespread regulation of misinformation online, they have seen little success. Contrastingly, the European Union's recently passed Digital Services Act has already seen some success and is shaping up to be an effective piece of legislation. As such, it is worth exploring the possibility of the United States adopting this legislation, and examining how a potential partnership could aid both the United States and the European Union in furthering their goals …

A Study Of The Relationship Between Interoceptive Sensibility And Distress Tolerance In Community And College Samples, William Moore

Honors Theses

Interoceptive sensibility (IS) involves the detection, integration, and interpretation of internal bodily signals, primarily from cardiovascular, pulmonary, or gastrointestinal systems. Dysfunction in interoceptive processing has been increasingly recognized as a clinically relevant factor in numerous neurological, psychiatric, and behavioral disorders. This thesis aimed to elucidate the relationship between interoceptive sensibility and distress tolerance, hypothesizing that individuals with heightened interoceptive sensibility may exhibit poorer distress tolerance, potentially influencing emotional regulation and maladaptive coping mechanisms. To explore these relationships, two studies have been conducted utilizing self-report measures of interoceptive sensibility and distress tolerance in community and college samples. In a study of …

Promoting Self-Acceptance Among Lgbtq+ Individuals: Investigating The Impact Of Religious, Spiritual, And Mystical Experiences, Makayla Hall

Honors Theses

Religiosity, spirituality, and mysticism centered around inclusivity may possess the potential to promote self-discovery and acceptance among those who identify as LGBTQ+. For people within this community, the journey to self-acceptance may involve embracing one’s sexual orientation and personal identity, overcoming internalized stigma and hardships, and cultivating a healthy connection with oneself (Camp et al., 2020). Prior researchers have found LGBTQ+ individuals to have a conflicted relationship with differing religious ideals and spiritual beliefs (Barton, 2010; Kubicek et al., 2009). For some within this population, religion, spirituality, and mysticism may be sources of benefit, enabling a sense of strength and …

Exploring Interoception - An Essential Skill Of Exceptional Self-Leadership, Suzanne Dameron

Creativity and Change Leadership Graduate Student Master's Projects

Research into interoception, the awareness of the body’s inner state, suggests that the body is the true star in the mind-body relationship. Interceptive findings suggest that when we pay attention to our physical sensations – twinges, tingles, a quickening heartbeat – we have a depth of information now available to us that enhances our self-awareness and self-leadership. This paper is the result of exploring the theory and practice of developing interoceptive awareness and its implications for self-leadership.
