Emoting In Context: Lived Narratives Of Filipino Health-Care Frontliners During The Early Days Of The Covid-19 Pandemic, John Martin Bernard Gappy

Sociology & Anthropology Department Faculty Publications

The current SARS-CoV-2 pandemic has placed the entire world in a liminal position whereby our well-rehearsed and predictive practices have been deeply shaken. Within this context of liminality, studies point to potential distress among healthcare workers who are taking care of COVID-19 patients. Most studies focus on emotional distress of frontline healthcare workers as fixed entities. The current approach perceives emotion as a type of connection with social worlds. This article focuses on contextual acts of emoting and is organized around personal, situational, and cultural features of nine frontline medical doctors affiliated with ten hospitals in Metro-Manila who were taking …

The Rhino Horn Trade And Radical Inequality As Environmental Conflict, Elizabeth Lunstrum, Nícia Givá, Francis Massé, Filipe Mate, Paulo Lopes Jose Jan 2023

The Rhino Horn Trade And Radical Inequality As Environmental Conflict, Elizabeth Lunstrum, Nícia Givá, Francis Massé, Filipe Mate, Paulo Lopes Jose

Global Studies Faculty Publications and Presentations

The illegal wildlife trade (IWT) is one of the most acute global conservation challenges. This paper examines what is driving young men to enter the rhino horn trade while advancing theory on environmental conflict. We show how the illicit rhino horn economy is a telling instance of environmental conflict—largely between ground-level hunters and increasingly militarized state conservation forces—that emerges from a context of radical inequality. We examine how practices ranging from labor migration and sidelining rural development to biodiversity conservation itself have profoundly transformed the Mozambican-South African borderlands from which many hunters originate, in turn generating poverty, exclusion, and vulnerability …

Ethnic Difference At The Center Of Land Struggles In The Americas: A Complex History Of Marginalization And Multidimensional Challenges Among The Garifuna In The Northern Honduras, Kaitlyn Bellamy, Victoria Garcia, Saleh Ahmed, Adriana Archila

Global Studies Faculty Publications and Presentations

Across the world, natural resources play a critical role in shaping livelihoods among the ethnic and indigenous communities. This article highlights the struggles Garifuna in northern Honduras face regarding land ownership, despite being constitutionally recognized yet ignored by the government. For them, land struggles are also their racial struggles. Contested land ownerships are the outcomes of historical discriminations, leaving Garifuna vulnerable to violence. This article addresses the multidimensional aspects of land-based struggles that have resulted in social, cultural, and environmental damage, creating insurmountable pressures on local Garifuna livelihoods.

Adaptation Outcomes In Climate-Vulnerable Locations: Understanding How Short-Term Climate Actions Exacerbated Existing Gender Inequities In Coastal Bangladesh, Saleh Ahmed, Elizabeth Eklund, Elizabeth Kiester Jan 2023

Adaptation Outcomes In Climate-Vulnerable Locations: Understanding How Short-Term Climate Actions Exacerbated Existing Gender Inequities In Coastal Bangladesh, Saleh Ahmed, Elizabeth Eklund, Elizabeth Kiester

Global Studies Faculty Publications and Presentations

Adverse climate impacts present a significant challenge for the majority of the world’s population. It is especially true for smallholder farmers in coastal Bangladesh, where some adaptation initiatives appeared to be short-sighted and reproduced further inequity, poverty, and food insecurity. Based on empirical insights, this paper shows how short-sighted climate responses can adversely affect gender equity, illustrated through three adaptation strategies. First, agricultural institutions have traditionally and historically linked with gender roles. Outmigration from the region is gendered as males leave first. This forces increased household and farm responsibilities onto female household members and increased vulnerability. This gendered vulnerability becomes …

Local News Deserts In China: The Role Of Social Media And Personal Communication Networks, Zixue Tai, Bai He, Jianping Liu

Journalism and Media Faculty Publications

The field of local news is often associated with news deserts, commonly defined as geo‐based communities without news‐ papers or other legacy media as providers of locally oriented news and civic information. This phenomenon is expanding in global society due to the diminishing presence of newspapers at moments of accelerated digitization. This study examines the multiplex nature of news deserts in rural and suburban areas in China. Data were collected through a multi‐methods approach combining two focus groups and 44 semi‐structured in‐depth interviews. Patterns of engagement among inter‐ viewees reveal that smartphone‐based social media applications and digital platforms function as …

Queer Mediated Practices As A Method To Center And Sustain Critical Health And Media Literacies, Alexander N. Vera, Vanessa Kitzie, Travis L. Wagner

Faculty Publications

Queer communities experience challenges when accessing accurate and comprehensive health information. These challenges span across media and information environments and threaten queer health promotion. This paper explored how 11 queer community health workers (CHWs) in a Southeastern US state respond to, subvert, and resist these challenges when creating digital health information resources for their queer communities. This longitudinal action research occurred over two years and included multiple qualitative data types. We analyzed these data using qualitative coding, following deductive and inductive strategies. Findings demonstrate how queer CHWs: 1) identified risks and barriers to health promotion their communities experienced; 2) created …

Economies Of Scale: Late-Antique Bakeries Outside Large Urban Centers, Jared Benton Jan 2023

Economies Of Scale: Late-Antique Bakeries Outside Large Urban Centers, Jared Benton

Art Faculty Publications

[First paragraph] The study of Roman bakeries sometimes has a tendency to treat them as somewhat different from other crafts and trades in terms of the scale of their production. Helmuth Schneider, for example, posits that Roman workshops "were not elaborately fitted out and it was quite cheap to set up a workshop; a craftsman usually needed only a few tools for his craft and often practiced it in a shop connected with his living quarters. There were some crafts, however, which were dependent on bigger production sites with more expensive equipment: bakeries had their ovens and mills... Bakers and …

Institute for Educational Development, East Africa

In Tanzania, the mass media is a primary means of communicating health information to urban and rural populations. While unsafe abortion is the leading cause of maternal deaths and complications in Tanzania, this has increased the high unintended pregnancy rate. Journalists, editors, program managers and producers play a significant role in determining the health-related issues reported. In the present study, the views, and opinions of mass media key informants on coverage of issues related to maternal, newborn and child health in Lake Zone were investigated. This qualitative study was conducted with key informants from 24 mass media outlets that covered …

Reading Critically From The Archives: James Merrill Linn’S Diary As A Gateway To The Past, Carrie M. Pirmann, Courtney Paddick

Faculty Contributions to Books

Archival research and reading from the archives have long been embraced as a scholarly research practice in humanities disciplines. While scholars may spend weeks or months poring over hidden treasures found in archives, undergraduate students are often not exposed to these materials in a hands-on way. However, college and university libraries often have archival collections tucked away that can facilitate learning when used in thoughtfully crafted assignments. In this chapter, we discuss how we used Text Encoding Initiative (TEI) and archival materials to provide students with an opportunity to engage in a close and critical reading of excerpts from the …

The Relationship Between Religiosity And Mental Health During The Covid-19 Quarantine, Luisauny Gomez, Jeremiah Sullins Jan 2023

The Relationship Between Religiosity And Mental Health During The Covid-19 Quarantine, Luisauny Gomez, Jeremiah Sullins

Modern Psychological Studies

Social isolation has become a public policy under the current circumstances. This isolation can lead to a life imbalance that is believed to affect physical, psychological, and spiritual well-being. Previous research shows that both, a defined sense of religiosity or affirmative secularity, can yield progressive emotional outcomes due to multiple factors such as community support, sense of structure, life guidance, mindfulness and a sense of unity with the world. However, a gap exists in the extant literature regarding the relationship between mental health and religiosity during global pandemics. To address this gap, this study sought to answer the following question: …

Investigated, also, is the extent to which dimensional moderators of social anxiety play an intermediary role in levels of social anxiety. The present study follows a between subjects, repeated measures, randomized control trial design. All experimental data was derived from self-report measures conducted prior to, during, and at the conclusion of a two-week aerobic exercise regimen. Data analysis was conducted via means comparisons, within subjects and between groups, on various metrics. Our results suggest a greater efficacy of dyadic aerobic exercise over both …

Expectations In Film Relationships: The Suffocation Model In Motion Pictures, Rachel Mcneil, Lindsay C. Morton Jan 2023

Expectations In Film Relationships: The Suffocation Model In Motion Pictures, Rachel Mcneil, Lindsay C. Morton

Modern Psychological Studies

The suffocation model states that marriage expectations in American culture have changed across time (Finkel et al., 2014). To test whether or not the tenets of this model appear in popular media, we examined the representation of love, belonging, esteem, and self-actualization needs in romantic relationships of films from the companionate era (1850-1965) and the self-expressive era (1965-present). Participants (N = 56) rated need fulfillment and expectations within the main romantic relationship in an assigned film. The results suggest that the shift in needs posited by the suffocation model was reflected in high-grossing romance films from the past 100 years. …

Lao Local Government, Sutida Tonlerd, Vethang Masong Jan 2023

Lao Local Government, Sutida Tonlerd, Vethang Masong

Asian Review

Before the promulgation of the first constitution of the Lao state in 1991, Laos was perceived by a number of Thai scholars as barbaric and lawless. The information about Lao politics during the Cold War was very limited to the outside world. The objective of this article is to reflect on the political system from Lao perspectives by using the analysis of local government in Lao People’s Democratic Republic (PDR). From 2 December 1975 onwards, historiography and document analysis suggest that Lao local government has been one mechanism in the structure of the state that moves towards socialism. It argues …

Democratization, Conflict And ‘Act East’ Policy: Challenges To Mediate Non-State Armed Actors Of Northeast India In Southeast Asia, Athikho Kaisii Jan 2023

Democratization, Conflict And ‘Act East’ Policy: Challenges To Mediate Non-State Armed Actors Of Northeast India In Southeast Asia, Athikho Kaisii

Asian Review

Non-state actor in Northeast India is a pre-independence phenomenon, and with the exception of Assam, the seed of institutionalizing violence was sown prior to the formation of the states. In course of time non-state actor has turned into non-state armed actor. Experience has proved that the formation of states as the process of democratization is yet to soothe the conflict in the region. With this salient reality, “Act East” seen as a path-breaking policy with a multi-prong strategy aiming to overhaul the image of the Northeast through rebuilding India’s historical ties with Southeast Asia, needs to embed a viable action-oriented …

Cambodia Watching Down Under, Geoffrey Gunn Jan 2023

Cambodia Watching Down Under, Geoffrey Gunn

Asian Review

With Cambodia Watching Down Under published by the Institute of Asian Studies then under the direction of Dr. Khien Theeravit at a time when the push for conflict resolution to the “Cambodia problem” reached a critical mass, three decades later this article looks back at the reception and impact of the book in a double sense. First, the question is posed as to the relevance of the book already made partly redundant by the signing of the landmark Paris Peace Agreements on Cambodia of October 23, 1991, several months after publication. Second, the article reflects upon the major thesis of …

From Government-Centric To People-Centered Government: A Reform Of The Administrative Services In Zhejiang Province, China (1992-2018), Orachorn Saechang

Asian Review

The government plays a critical role in providing public services and serving the interests of the public. However, the traditional government-centric mentality tends to prioritize what the government can do rather than considering the needs of the public. This article aims to explore the transformation of the Chinese government from a government-centric approach to a people-centric approach and evaluates the reform efforts. Based on a content analysis of both Chinese and English literature, this study reveals that the Zhejiang government has been engaged in a continuous administrative reform process since 1992, consisting of five distinct phases, leading to a gradual …
