Alzheimer's disease (AD) and other classes of dementia are important public health problems with overwhelming social, physical, and financial effects for patients, society, and their families and caregivers. The pathophysiology of AD is poorly understood despite the extensive number of clinical and experimental studies. The brain's lipid-rich composition is linked to disturbances in lipid homeostasis, often associated with glucose and lipid abnormalities in various neurodegenerative diseases, including AD. Moreover, elevated low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol levels may be related to a higher probability of AD. Here, we hypothesize that lipids, and electronegative LDL (L5) in particular, may be involved in the …
Working Memory Performance: Is Subjective Measurement A Better Predictor Than Cognitive Load?, Megan Mccray
Working Memory Performance: Is Subjective Measurement A Better Predictor Than Cognitive Load?, Megan Mccray
Dissertations and Theses
We rely on our capacity for rapid attention switching to conduct multiple tasks simultaneously. Leading working memory models assume that memory maintenance and attention-demanding secondary task processing cannot coincide. Any reduction in memory maintenance activities occurring due to secondary task processing leads to impaired recall. This temporal relationship is typically characterized through the proportion of time spent attending to the concurrent processing task, also called cognitive load. Although the primary determinant of forgetting in leading models, recent findings show limitations to cognitive load effects in multitasking. We investigated whether the effects of cognitive load are a byproduct of subjective task …
The Meaning Of Optimum And Chosen Method Of Optimization Are Individually Defined, Jeffrey Yi-Lin Forrest, Lawrence Shao, Jun Liu, Brian Sloboda
The Meaning Of Optimum And Chosen Method Of Optimization Are Individually Defined, Jeffrey Yi-Lin Forrest, Lawrence Shao, Jun Liu, Brian Sloboda
Pennsylvania Economic Review
Finding the true meaning of the assumption of rationality has attracted the attention of many scholars and brought forward major changes to the discipline of economics. However, the vast amount of literature shows that such attention has not only led to inconsistent interpretations, but also contradictory ones. To clear up these inconsistencies and contradictions, this paper looks at this assumption from a different angle – natural endowments of individuals and business firms, respectively. To do so successfully, this research goes far beyond all well-adopted methods of analysis and employs systems methods and such a logical reasoning that is parallel to …
College Students' Emotional Response To Social Distancing Measures During The Covid-19 Pandemic: A Qualitative Diary Study, Jaycie Clerico
College Students' Emotional Response To Social Distancing Measures During The Covid-19 Pandemic: A Qualitative Diary Study, Jaycie Clerico
West Chester University Master’s Theses
Our qualitative diary study explores the emotional responses of college students to the social distancing protocols in place in the USA during the Covid-19 pandemic. Given the psychological benefit of social connection, it is important to examine how Covid-19 social distancing measures affected well-being. We focused on impacts on young adult college students. As part of an undergraduate senior capstone course at a medium-sized public university in the Eastern USA, psychology seniors were asked to keep diaries of their thoughts and feelings about the Covid-19 pandemic. This offered a unique opportunity to understand their first-person, real-time accounts and reactions to …
Investigating How Empathy And Other Receptive Communication Abilities Are Inter-Related And Their Association To Maladaptive Personality Outcomes And Relationship Outcomes, Julia Linden-Chirlian
Investigating How Empathy And Other Receptive Communication Abilities Are Inter-Related And Their Association To Maladaptive Personality Outcomes And Relationship Outcomes, Julia Linden-Chirlian
West Chester University Master’s Theses
Abilities such as empathy, perspective taking, emotional intelligence, and mentalization are fundamental aspects of successful interpersonal relationships. However, distinguishing empathy from related constructs is difficult because these constructs seemingly conceptually overlap. In the present thesis (n=230), I used several self-report measures of empathy and related constructs, first examining their inter-relationships through factor analysis, and then examining their associations to various self-reported outcomes (maladaptive personality traits, relationship satisfaction, relationship communication styles). I found that most empathy and related measures are highly correlated and might be well represented through a single factor. I further found support that higher empathy and related constructs …
Two Models Of Protecting Democracy: Federalism And The U.S. Deviation, David Landau
Two Models Of Protecting Democracy: Federalism And The U.S. Deviation, David Landau
Scholarly Publications
This Article contrasts two different models for protecting democracy. The first model, which is common globally, relies on insulated, apex-level independent institutions to protect sensitive democratic functions like administering elections and prosecuting wrongdoing by high level governmental officials. The United States largely eschews this approach and instead relies much more heavily on a second approach, which decentralizes sensitive functions among a large number of state and local officials, who are often not very insulated from politics. This Article describes the benefits and costs of each model in light of recent attacks on electoral administration in the United States. Moreover, it …
Parental Instincts: The Neurological And Biological Factors Associated With Parenthood, Jared Reeder
Parental Instincts: The Neurological And Biological Factors Associated With Parenthood, Jared Reeder
Undergraduate Honors Theses
The following project involves a systematic review of the scientific literature on neural and biological changes of mothers and fathers in parenthood. Until very recently, little scientific research was devoted to studying how bearing children affects a man or woman’s long-term biology. Over the last twenty years, studies of neuroplastic changes in new mothers show specific neural mechanisms responsible for altering the behaviors of mothers during and after pregnancy. These changes in neuroplasticity alter behavior in such a way that led to mothers requiring less sleep and being more prone to hearing the cries of their children. In addition to …

What Is Catholic Psychotherapy And How Should It Move Forward?, Thomas G. Plante
What Is Catholic Psychotherapy And How Should It Move Forward?, Thomas G. Plante
Psychology
Catholic psychotherapy is a critically important specialization that under-scores the need for culturally competent best practices. It integrates state-of-the-art psychotherapeutic professional services with the rich religious, spiritual, and cultural contributions and traditions of the Roman Catholic Church. Since the Church is the single largest religious denomination in the world and represents about a quarter of the United States population, there is ample need for Catholic-informed and engaged psychotherapists with expertise in working thoughtfully and sensitively with Catholic clients, including laypersons and clerics, and with Church institutions such as schools, hospitals, and charitable groups. While the Catholic Psychotherapy Association has been …

Shifting Students Toward Testing: Impact Of Instruction And Context On Self-Regulated Learning, Patricia M. Simone, Lisa C. Whitfield, Matthew C. Bell, Pooja Kher, Taylor Tamashiro
Psychology
Much of the learning that college students engage in today occurs in unsupervised settings, making effective self-regulated learning techniques of particular importance. We examined the impact of task difficulty and supervision on whether participants would follow written instructions to use repeated testing over restudying. In Study 1, we found that when supervised, instructions to test resulted in changes in the self-regulated learning behaviors such that participants tested more often than they studied, relative to participants who were unsupervised during learning. This was true regardless of the task difficulty. In Study 2, we showed that failure to shift study strategies in …

Mediational Effect Of Teacher-Based Discrimination On Academic Performance: An Intersectional Analysis Of Race, Gender, And Income/Class, Eric Kyere, Saahoon Hong, Carolyn Gentle-Genitty
Founder’s College - Scholarship and Professional Work
Drawing on prior research, this study applies an intersectional framework to investigate discrimination in the context of teacher–student relationships and its influence on students’ academic outcomes. Outcomes assessed were inclusive of self-efficacy, school attendance, and grade point average (GPA). For this analysis, structural equation modeling was used with a cross-sectional sample of the Maryland and Adolescent Development in Context Study (MADICS) and the youth self-administered (YSA) questionnaires administered when the youth were in 8th grade (Wave 3). A total of 1182 students completed the survey, of whom 704 were selected for this study. Findings show teacher discrimination as a mechanism …
The Effects Of Screen Time On Children, Jacqueline Valdepenas
The Effects Of Screen Time On Children, Jacqueline Valdepenas
Nursing | Senior Theses
With the development of technology continuing to grow at a fast-paced pace in society, children are now becoming exposed to such technology at a younger age. The introduction of smartphones and tablets, which is defined as screen time in this paper, are being introduced to children as young as 6 months of age. Instead of children playing with toys recommended for their age, they use screen time for their play needs and entertainment. Some parents use screen time as a distraction and/or relief for their own needs when the child is upset or they’re unable to tend to the child. …
Understanding Language Barriers And Its Implications On Patient Outcomes In The Urgent Care Situation, Nicolo Co
Nursing | Senior Theses
Background
A common goal for healthcare is healthcare for all, through which can be achieved when communication between the client and healthcare team is established. There are millions of immigrants worldwide who are not granted the healthcare that they deserve simply because of a lack of understanding in a country’s dominant language.
Patients with a limited language proficiency in a new country can have difficulty in understanding the care that they receive, which leads them to toil with understanding their healthcare options, let alone establishing expectations. This issue also stretches onto the risks of patient safety, in which urgent needs …
A Literature Review Evalating Ptsd Rates Among Healthcare Professionals Working In Emergency Transport And Critical Care Settings, Keenan Mai
Nursing | Senior Theses
Background: The occupational stressors experienced by nurses and assistive personnel working in critical care settings can be extremely detrimental to their overall mental health. Employees in specialized units such as the Intensive Care Unit (ICU), cardiac intensive care unit (CICU), surgical trauma intensive care unit (STICU), pediatric intensive care unit (PICU), medical intensive care unit (MICU), neonatal intensive care unit (NICU), Emergency Department (ED) or Emergency Room (ER), and Critical Care Transport (CCT) settings are responsible for patients requiring a higher level of care, and consequently, have more to worry about throughout their workday. Research Question: Climbing rates of Post-Traumatic …

The Complications Of People In Diplomacy, Kiner Kwok
The Complications Of People In Diplomacy, Kiner Kwok
BYU Asian Studies Student Journal
In the late 18th century and early 19th century, European embassies eagerly interacted with Qing China (1644–1912). In 1792, Lord George Macartney (1737–1806) led the first British mission to Qing China. During this mission, even though Lord Macartney met with the Qianlong emperor (r. 1735–1796), his goal of establishing free trade and diplomatic relations with the Qing court was rejected. A few years later, in 1795, a mission, sent out by the Dutch East India Company (VOC), arrived at the Qing court to congratulate the Qianlong emperor’s 60th anniversary of his governance. Then again, in 1805, a Russian mission, led …

Investigating The Potential For Industrial Dairy Farms To Move Towards Sustainability In Western Michigan, Kendra Kay Slater, Rebecca Williams
Investigating The Potential For Industrial Dairy Farms To Move Towards Sustainability In Western Michigan, Kendra Kay Slater, Rebecca Williams
Student Summer Scholars Manuscripts
Industrial dairy farms, also referred to as concentrated animal feeding operations (CAFOS) or factory farms, are often known for the negative effects they have on the environment and animals. However, these farms are the backbone of our food systems supplying 99% of our dairy and meat in the United States. In this qualitative case study, we conduct in-depth interviews and farm transect walks with five industrial dairy farmers in Western Michigan to examine how they view and define sustainability, how they incorporate sustainable practices on their farms, and what they perceive as the barriers to industrial dairy sustainability. To analyze …
Deep Ecology, Nature Spirits, And The Filipino Transpersonal Worldview, Carl Lorenz Cervantes
Deep Ecology, Nature Spirits, And The Filipino Transpersonal Worldview, Carl Lorenz Cervantes
International Journal of Transpersonal Studies
Many Filipinos today still believe that the world is filled with invisible entities who can affect their lives in a tangible way. These beings usually reside in nature as the souls of ancestors or other mysterious spirits. This indigenous transpersonal worldview implies that the individual is part of a living world. The modern term “deep ecology” seems to be aligned with this worldview. This paper looks at the implications of the Filipino transpersonal worldview on policies related to the care for environment and biodiversity.
Is Biological Death Final? Recomputing The Drake-S Equation For Postmortem Survival Of Consciousness, Adam J. Rock, James Houran, Patrizio E. Tressoldi, Brian Laythe
Is Biological Death Final? Recomputing The Drake-S Equation For Postmortem Survival Of Consciousness, Adam J. Rock, James Houran, Patrizio E. Tressoldi, Brian Laythe
International Journal of Transpersonal Studies
This participatory team science project extended Laythe and Houran’s (2022) prior application of a famous probabilistic argument known as the "Drake equation" to the question of postmortem survival. Specifically, we evaluated effect sizes from peer-reviewed, empirical studies to determine the maximum average percentage effect that ostensibly supports (i.e., "anomalous effects") or refutes (i.e., "known confounds") the survival hypothesis. But unlike the earlier application, this research included a study-specific estimate of the hypothesized variable of "living agent psi" via a new meta-analysis of empirical studies (N = 17) with exceptional subjects vs participants from the general population. Our updated analysis found …
Two Dimensions Of A Bodhisattva, Douglas Duckworth
Two Dimensions Of A Bodhisattva, Douglas Duckworth
International Journal of Transpersonal Studies
This paper presents two dimensions of a bodhisattva, the ideal of Maha- ya- na Buddhism. One dimension involves contemplative practices that disclose a pure nature that is always already present; this reality is unveiled after the obscurations that cloud it are removed. I refer to this as a “top-down” approach because it is based on qualities of awakening that are already there, yet lie beyond an ordinary being’s comprehension. The second dimension, which I refer to as a “bottom-up” approach, involves directed training and discipline. Unlike the top-down approach, this is not about “going with the flow” or simply letting …
