Exploring Diversity In Booth Library, Madeline Reiher, Dionne Lipscomb, Jacob Mueller, Kirstin Duffin, Ellen Corrigan

Together We RISE (Making Excellence Inclusive)

The first sentence in the mission statement for Eastern Illinois University’s Booth Library states “Our mission is to collaboratively empower the intellectual and creative growth of our diverse campus and community.” This commitment to the promotion of diversity has led the librarians and their DEI committee to ask an important question, are students of diverse backgrounds comfortable using our facilities? This research used a mixed-methods study to survey and interview numerous African American undergraduate EIU students to learn more about their experiences with Booth Library, specifically how it is used, when it is used, and changes they would like to …

Beyond Outdated Magazines And Motivational Posters: How To Make Offices Safer And More Assessable, Danessa A. Carter, Kelsey Boll, Amina Feder Oct 2022

Beyond Outdated Magazines And Motivational Posters: How To Make Offices Safer And More Assessable, Danessa A. Carter, Kelsey Boll, Amina Feder

Together We RISE (Making Excellence Inclusive)

Office spaces are the first in-person introduction for individuals to access services. However, these spaces are frequently, even if unintentionally, biased against marginalized and underserved populations. Cuthbert and Taylor (2019) noted the importance of inclusive language and heightened awareness of physical requirements for spaces as ways to impact a sense of connectedness to an environment. Hartal (2018) encourages open communication among staff regarding issues related to diversity and celebrating individual differences. These discussions and trainings can help dismantle microaggressions and empower employees to address othering behavior in an assertive and meaningful way (Fox & Ore, 2010). This presentation will address …

Do Islamist Parties Help Or Hinder Women? Party Institutionalization, Piety And Responsiveness To Female Citizens, Mounah Abdel-Samad, Lindsay J. Benstead Oct 2022

Do Islamist Parties Help Or Hinder Women? Party Institutionalization, Piety And Responsiveness To Female Citizens, Mounah Abdel-Samad, Lindsay J. Benstead

Political Science Faculty Publications and Presentations

Does electing Islamist parties help or hurt women? Due to Ennahda winning a plurality in the 2011 elections and women from all parties winning 31% of seats, Tunisia offers an opportunity to test the impact of legislator gender and Islamist orientation on women's representation. Using original 2012 surveys of 40 Tunisian parliamentarians (MPs) and 1200 citizens, we find that electing female and Islamists MPs improves women's symbolic and service responsiveness by increasing the likelihood that female citizens are aware of and contact MPs. Electing Islamist female MPs has a positive impact on women's symbolic and service responsiveness, but decreases the …

Systematic Reviews On Hai Topics: A Look At Reporting Practices, Jane Kinkus Yatcilla, Kelly Weigand Oct 2022

Systematic Reviews On Hai Topics: A Look At Reporting Practices, Jane Kinkus Yatcilla, Kelly Weigand

Libraries Faculty and Staff Scholarship and Research

Human-animal interactions (HAI) are being studied with increased frequency, evidenced by a steady increase in the number of published articles and the number of journals publishing them. Evidence synthesis methods like systematic review (SR) provide a stronger level of evidence than individual studies and are often used to inform practice guidelines. To ensure SR accuracy and reliability, they must follow rigorous, prescribed methodologies. Objectives: This study of HAI SRs was designed to determine the characteristics of HAI SRs in terms of publication patterns, human subjects, animal(s) of interest, and outcomes, and to answer: (Q1)Which methodological guideline was followed? Was a …

Artificial Intelligence And The Situational Rationality Of Diagnosis: Human Problem-Solving And The Artifacts Of Health And Medicine, Michael W. Raphael

Publications and Research

What is the problem-solving capacity of artificial intelligence (AI) for health and medicine? This paper draws out the cognitive sociological context of diagnostic problem-solving for medical sociology regarding the limits of automation for decision-based medical tasks. Specifically, it presents a practical way of evaluating the artificiality of symptoms and signs in medical encounters, with an emphasis on the visualization of the problem-solving process in doctor-patient relationships. In doing so, the paper details the logical differences underlying diagnostic task performance between man and machine problem-solving: its principle of rationality, the priorities of its means of adaptation to abstraction, and the effects …

Food Insecurity In Broome County And Its Effect On Adolescent Academic Performance, Aidan J. Gajewski

Binghamton University Undergraduate Journal

Food insecurity is a growing concern among children within the U.S., as the number of households who are food insecure has grown in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic. Food insecurity in children can lead to a multitude of cognitive complications. My research investigates the relationship between food insecurity and academic performance in elementary schools in Broome County. To uncover how food insecurity and academic performance are linked, interviews were conducted with school staff (teachers, administrators, a food service manager), the area's socioeconomic status was analyzed, standardized testing scores were compiled, and the food offerings in the area were explored. …

Empty Apologies: Canada’S Missing And Murdered Indigenous Women And Girls Crisis, Clementine D. Sherman Oct 2022

Empty Apologies: Canada’S Missing And Murdered Indigenous Women And Girls Crisis, Clementine D. Sherman

Binghamton University Undergraduate Journal

The Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls (MMIWG) crisis is a human rights crisis that demands swift and concrete action from the Canadian government. Indigenous women and girls in the United States and Canada are disproportionately affected by violence due to racist, white supremacist, colonialist values ingrained in society and the federal government. This paper looks into the findings of Canada’s 2016 National Inquiry into the MMIWG crisis and determines the progress that the Canadian government has made toward ending the crisis. The paper concludes that the Canadian government has used the COVID-19 pandemic as an excuse for delayed …

Analyzing The Contribution Of Western Acculturation To The Socio-Economic Disenfranchisement Of Pakistani Expatriates In The United Arab Emirates, Muhammad Murtaza Ali Oct 2022

Analyzing The Contribution Of Western Acculturation To The Socio-Economic Disenfranchisement Of Pakistani Expatriates In The United Arab Emirates, Muhammad Murtaza Ali

Binghamton University Undergraduate Journal

The impact of acculturation on the West has primarily been explored through the favorable and adverse effects of immigration. However, the conversation surrounding the impact of western acculturation on the rest of the world is relatively undeveloped. Here, on the basis that acculturation is the adoption of cultural practices and can exist without the physical presence of a dominant culture, the impact of western acculturation will be associated with the socioeconomic disenfranchisement of an overseas population: Pakistani expatriates in the United Arab Emirates. More specifically, free education and western media are identified as mechanisms of western acculturation. Both media induced …

Interpreting Global Urban-Rural Political Divides: A Literature Review, Jobim Steyermark Oct 2022

Interpreting Global Urban-Rural Political Divides: A Literature Review, Jobim Steyermark

Binghamton University Undergraduate Journal

Is the familiar urban-rural political divide a universal phenomenon, or is it conditional on institutional, cultural, or historical factors? In places where such a divide does exist, does it always manifest as a contest between progressive urban centers and conservative rural areas, or is this polarity sometimes reversed? Drawing on the insights of political scientists, sociologists, and historians, a review of the literature suggests resilient patterns of political geography that have their roots in the cleavage formation processes of the 19th and early 20th centuries. In particular, the legacy of agrarian politics and patterns of land tenure during this critical …

The Impact Of Cannabis On Motivational Processes For Smoked Tobacco And Cigarettes, Claire M. Gorey Oct 2022

The Impact Of Cannabis On Motivational Processes For Smoked Tobacco And Cigarettes, Claire M. Gorey

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Cannabis and tobacco are very commonly used across the United States. Given the high prevalence of their dual use, an important health consequence of cannabis is its impact on tobacco usage rates. After all, cigarettes are a leading cause of death in the United States. Theoretical models of drug abuse suggest that cannabis cues and intoxication may be responsible for enhanced smoked tobacco/cigarette motivation. Therefore, the present research sought to assess these routes via two studies. In study 1 (validation & cross-drug cue effects), researchers validated a set of realistic cannabis images among a sample of participants residing in the …

Economic Prospects Of Gilgit Baltistan - Part Iii, Ishrat Husain Dr.

Faculty Research - Newspaper and Magazine Articles

The recent initiative taken by the GB government to introduce STEM subjects right from the school level is highly commendable. This initiative is quite unique and far sighted. Instead of the traditional recruitment of teachers the government is engaging a private sector provider (PSP) through an open competitive process for imparting digital learning at 34 selected schools to begin with. The PSP would post a resource person in each school to establish complete e-learning environment in schools including servers, routers, power back ups, etc. They would use the Learning Management system (LMS) to deliver the content, set up centralized data …

Understanding Costa Rica's Response To The Covid-19 Pandemic: Competing Explanations, Lise Charles

The Journal of International Relations, Peace Studies, and Development

As the COVID-19 pandemic continues to have major impacts on the world, careful study of successful health systems is essential. Costa Rica has been identified as a country that has responded well to the pandemic with the proportion of death rates compared to infection rates being the lowest in comparison to other countries in Central America. This paper examines Costa Rica’s relatively successful response to the COVID-19 pandemic as a case study in good public healthcare management. This study also highlights the importance of theory for addressing urgent, practical development challenges to explore what theoretical frameworks can best explain the …

Shifting Geopolitics: Reimagining Globalization And Spatial Representation In The Post Covid-19 Era, Victoria H. Bergström Oct 2022

Shifting Geopolitics: Reimagining Globalization And Spatial Representation In The Post Covid-19 Era, Victoria H. Bergström

The Journal of International Relations, Peace Studies, and Development

Abstract: Since the emergence of the COVID-19 pandemic, the utilisation of maps has been at the forefront. Maps have informed policymakers, governments, and citizens of the distribution and spread of the disease. Although these maps have been used for various purposes, from border closures to curfews, there is an inherent danger in this widespread usage. Aside from the intricacy of these spatial representations, these widely distributed representations encourage isolationism and the reconception of borders in an increasingly globalised world. Furthermore, new connectivities through digital means have created a potential solution to international exchanges amidst physical limitations. Nevertheless, elitism prevents the …

Intersectionality And Impact Of Covid19: Politics Of The Private Sphere And Gender-Based Violence, Sabah Hussain Oct 2022

Intersectionality And Impact Of Covid19: Politics Of The Private Sphere And Gender-Based Violence, Sabah Hussain

The Journal of International Relations, Peace Studies, and Development

One of the primary contradictions in the administration of power consists of inequalities between women and men. The attitudes, behaviours, and roles which societies prescribe as congruous for the construction of ‘gender’ can be the consequence, the root, and structure of power relations, involving the very intimate domain of the domestic to the utmost levels of the political sphere and decision-making. As the COVID-19 crisis deepens economic and social strain combined with social isolation measures and constricted movement, the instances of gender-based violence also started to rise exponentially. Many women were being forced to 'lockdown' in the domestic setting with …

The Role Of Academic Libraries In Restoring Quality Teaching And Learning In Education For Sustainable Development In Nigeria, Muhammad Kabir Abubakar Oct 2022

The Role Of Academic Libraries In Restoring Quality Teaching And Learning In Education For Sustainable Development In Nigeria, Muhammad Kabir Abubakar

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)

The quality of teaching and learning is the key to sustainable development. This has inspired innumerable educational stakeholders to search for means of restoring quality teaching and learning in Nigeria’s education system. To accomplish this, significant epistemological efforts have been made over the years on teaching methods/models, student learning styles, and curriculum content reforms. However, the role of academic libraries has not been given any significant consideration. It is, therefore, the conviction of this paper that sustainable development depends profoundly on the availability of information provided and accessed through a well-managed library for effective teaching, learning, and research. So, using …

The Impact Of Covid-19 Pandemic On Undergraduate Students’ Interest In The Stem Field, Zaheen Rashed '24, Yuchen Jiang, Zimo Ma, Pamela M. Propsom

Annual Student Research Poster Session

The deadly consequences of COVID-19 have been well documented, as have the social, emotional, and cognitive effects. These sequelae extend to the educational system. Much less investigated have been the potential positive outcomes of the pandemic. Given that STEM education relies heavily on hands-on laboratory experiences, STEM students may have been especially impacted by pandemic-imposed remote instruction. We surveyed 392 students at one liberal arts college querying why they continue studying in STEM or leave the STEM disciplines. Because the literature indicates that people of color and those from lower socioeconomic groups were more negatively affected by COVID-19, we hypothesized …

Diagnosing The Present With An Ecotopian Lexicon, Chirag Giri, Adam Liebman Oct 2022

Diagnosing The Present With An Ecotopian Lexicon, Chirag Giri, Adam Liebman

Annual Student Research Poster Session

The book An Ecotopian Lexicon (2019) presents a collection of thirty terms and concepts from speculative fiction, anthropology, and the sociology of subcultures, each explored by a different author. The lexicon intends to address our collective “poverty of imagination” when it comes to avoiding global environmental collapse and building a different world, evidenced by the increasing dominance of apocalyptic narratives in popular culture. Although the book’s primary aim is to explore diverse concepts for imagining better futures, we have analyzed the form and content of the book for what they tell us about the present.

Investigating Conflicts In Mind Wandering And Neural Oscillation Studies, Mahnoor Zahid, Robert West Oct 2022

Investigating Conflicts In Mind Wandering And Neural Oscillation Studies, Mahnoor Zahid, Robert West

Annual Student Research Poster Session

When presented with a repetitive or an undemanding task, our mind tends to disengage from the external environment to focus on the inner trains of thought. This phenomenon, commonly known as "zoning out" is termed as Mind Wandering. Across various literature', this effect has been mainly studied under two states: while performing a low-demand task, or under a meditative state. Neural oscillations such as alpha, beta, delta and theta waves were studied to observe varying effects of mind wandering and to distinguish how and when a human mind goes into this state. It was hypothesized that one wave would prove …

Environmental And Social Conflict In The Urban Context: An Analysis Of Waste Management In Hanoi, Nam Hoang Oct 2022

Environmental And Social Conflict In The Urban Context: An Analysis Of Waste Management In Hanoi, Nam Hoang

Student Research

The resistance movement regarding the operation of Nam Sơn Waste Processing Center – one of the main landfills in Hanoi – has for over twenty years been a significant challenge to the city. Considering the resistance among local communities as a natural and environmental conflict, this project will attempt to discover the sources, dynamics, and outcomes of the conflict. The continuing reproduction of local resistance despite authority’s efforts to mitigate through negotiations and promises has revealed the complex nature of the conflict, which then required a more comprehensive approach not solely to the direct conflict but also to the system …
