Russia-Ukraine War Brings Nuclear Risk To Level Not Seen Since Cuban Missile Crisis, Erika Simpson
Russia-Ukraine War Brings Nuclear Risk To Level Not Seen Since Cuban Missile Crisis, Erika Simpson
Political Science Publications
The current Russian-Ukraine crisis is marked by escalating tensions and heightened nuclear threats, reminiscent of Cold War anxieties. Vladimir Putin's strategic maneuvers, including partial mobilization and veiled nuclear warnings, underscore a perilous geopolitical standoff. The risk of nuclear use, potentially greater than during the Cuban missile crisis, looms amid fears that Russia might resort to tactical nuclear weapons. International responses, from stark warnings by Western leaders to diplomatic appeals from global powers like China and India, emphasize efforts to prevent catastrophic escalation. Amidst military developments and societal opposition within Russia, the crisis underscores the delicate balance between deterrence and conflict …

Anthropology Faculty Publications and Presentations
Among mammals, the order Primates is exceptional in having a high taxonomic richness in which the taxa are arboreal, semiterrestrial, or terrestrial. Although habitual terrestriality is pervasive among the apes and African and Asian monkeys (catarrhines), it is largely absent among monkeys of the Americas (platyrrhines), as well as galagos, lemurs, and lorises (strepsirrhines), which are mostly arboreal. Numerous ecological drivers and species-specific factors are suggested to set the conditions for an evolutionary shift from arboreality to terrestriality, and current environmental conditions may provide analogous scenarios to those transitional periods. Therefore, we investigated predominantly arboreal, diurnal primate genera from the …

Language Style Matching In Older Couples And Marital Satisfaction, Benjamin Burke, Amy Rauer
Language Style Matching In Older Couples And Marital Satisfaction, Benjamin Burke, Amy Rauer
Journal of Social, Behavioral, and Health Sciences
Research on marital communication has focused on nonverbal behaviors (e.g., affect), leaving specific word use relatively unexplored. Recent work, however, suggests that similarity in function words (e.g., articles) may be associated with relational functioning in younger couples. We explored if this language style matching (LSM) also occurred in more established relationships and whether it was related to marital satisfaction within a sample of 64 older adult married couples. Using a dyadic, two-wave, observational research design, our results suggest that LSM is highly prevalent in older couples’ conversations across three different tasks (reminiscence, problem solving, and health support). Only LSM during …

“Khi Mô Về?” (When Will You Go Home?) Evocative Autoethnography On Death, Impermanence, And Time-Space Extension, Kien Nguyen-Trung
The Qualitative Report
This article is motivated by my personal wish to pay tribute to my beloved grandfather, who passed away during the COVID-19 pandemic while I was stranded in Australia. Relying on an evocative autoethnography of a grandson, a father, a PhD candidate and graduate, and a researcher, and in reference to the concepts of place-making theories such as time-space expansion, I tried to embrace my experience of grief and loss as well as to make sense of my feelings of distance, impermanence, and death during this chaotic period. The story I will tell below chronicles my emotional and spiritual journey from …

Objective:
Latinx asylum-seeking families report posttraumatic distress that is 161–204% higher than in non-immigrants, with adverse consequences for health and well-being. Recent U.S. policies have further embedded trauma in the asylum-seeking process by forcing families to remain in Mexico, enduring dire living conditions in tent encampments near the border while awaiting processing. These families are now entering the United States in large numbers. This article sheds light on their recent experiences and mental health needs, using a mixed methods-grounded theory design, presenting quantitative and qualitative data to describe the experiences of six asylum-seeking families who waited for 1–2 years in …

On Building Data Market Based On Supply Side, Chaochun Huang
Bulletin of Chinese Academy of Sciences (Chinese Version)
Data market is the foundation of digital economy. Following General Secretary Xi Jinping's thought on promoting the classification, grading and separation of data, defining the rights and ensuring proper use of data, this study focuses on the main theoretical and practical issues of building data market by answering three questions which are why to build it, what to build, and how to build. It finds that the digital economy shows three-stages of development. With the enterprise data becoming dominant, it puts forward realistic requirements and offers development opportunities for data market. To overcome the obstacles in the way of building …
Using Constructivist Grounded Theory To Examine The Experiences Of Black British Female Managers: A Worked Example, Denise A. Miller
Using Constructivist Grounded Theory To Examine The Experiences Of Black British Female Managers: A Worked Example, Denise A. Miller
The Qualitative Report
Staff working at children and young people’s services (CYPS) are often charged with the responsibility of restructuring, developing, and putting into effect policies and procedures that are supposed to safeguard their clients and their colleagues from the effects of institutional racism. However, there continues to be incongruences between some leaders’ espoused commitment to equality, diversity and inclusion, and their actions. In this paper, I draw on a larger research project to critically reflect on the usefulness of constructivist grounded theory (CGT) as a methodological approach for developing understandings about the experiences of 10 Black British female managers working for CYPS. …

Lived Experiences Of Former Stem Undergraduate Mentors Of An Afterschool Mentoring Program: An Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis, Pamela Martínez Oquendo, Kristin Vanwyngaarden, Christine E. Cutucache
The Qualitative Report
Studies have identified gaps in the development of undergraduate students in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM). Students lack communication and problem-solving, impeding employment opportunities post-graduation. It is essential to prepare students for employment in STEM fields, as these fields remain in high demand and offer competitive wages for economic stability. Research has revealed that students gain critical thinking and problem-solving skills through students mentoring experiences. Evidence surrounding the inclusion of active learning strategies for in-classroom pedagogy has expanded in recent years, but the support mechanisms beyond the classroom remain unclear. Herein, we followed students for a decade after participation …

Robust Testing For Explosive Behavior With Strongly Dependent Errors, Yiu Lim Lui, Peter C. B. Phillips, Jun Yu
Robust Testing For Explosive Behavior With Strongly Dependent Errors, Yiu Lim Lui, Peter C. B. Phillips, Jun Yu
Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers
A heteroskedasticity-autocorrelation robust (HAR) test statistic is proposed to test for the presence of explosive roots in financial or real asset prices when the equation errors are strongly dependent. Limit theory for the test statistic is developed and extended to heteroskedastic models. The new test has stable size properties unlike conventional test statistics that typically lead to size distortion and inconsistency in the presence of strongly dependent equation errors. The new procedure can be used to consistently time-stamp the origination and termination of an explosive episode under similar conditions of long memory errors. Simulations are conducted to assess the finite …

Inadequate consumption of healthy food is an ongoing public health issue in the United States. Food availability measures of supply versus consumption of healthy foods are disconnected in many studies. There is a need for an objective assessment of the food environment in order to assess how the food supply aligns with the Healthy Eating Index (HEI). Data were collected as part of the Healthy Community Stores Case Study Project, including a refined Nutrition Environment Measures Survey for Healthy Community Stores (NEMS-HCS) and an updated Healthy Food Availability Index that aligns with the Healthy Eating Index (HFAHEI). This paper will …

Public Diplomacy Of Indonesian Film Agency Through Film Industry As International Political Instruments, Ali Zahid Habibullah, Chandra Purnama, Teuku Rezasyah
Public Diplomacy Of Indonesian Film Agency Through Film Industry As International Political Instruments, Ali Zahid Habibullah, Chandra Purnama, Teuku Rezasyah
Jurnal Wacana Politik
Public diplomacy is one of the instruments commonly used in international political activities. More precisely, public diplomacy discusses diplomatic activities carried out by state and non-state actors towards foreign publics in order to fulfill the interests of the relevant state. Various instruments can be used in public diplomacy activities such as books, television programs, brands, festivals, products, and films. In fact, information obtained by the public regarding a country comes from non-government actors. If uncontrolled, information circulating, especially from non-government actors, can cause problems for the national interest of a country. The problem is related to the influence of information …

Redefining Wellness And Self-Care For Students From Diverse Backgrounds, Angela M. Yoder, Amina Feder, Kelsey Boll
Together We RISE (Making Excellence Inclusive)
The COVID-19 pandemic has been associated with unprecedented medical and mental health problems which have disproportionately affected those in young adulthood and those from disenfranchised and underrepresented communities (Tai et al., 2021). Creative expression activities have historically assisted individuals in addressing self-care in a way that provides opportunities for externalization and containment of uncontrollable problems (e.g. trauma, violence, consequences of systemic oppression, abuse) (Thomas & Morris, 2017). Although the promotion of self-care now occurs in many universities, few students have well-developed self-care plans (Stalnaker-Shofner et al, 2021). Creative expression self-care activities that incorporate concepts of self-compassion, emotional regulation, mindfulness, boundaries, …

The Power Of Healing From Educational Trauma: Transformative Experiences In An Adult Higher Education Degree Completion Cohort Program Through Circles Of Engagement, Participation, Self-Efficacy, And Nurturing, Wytress Richardson, Craig Mealman
Together We RISE (Making Excellence Inclusive)
Many adult students arrive at the doors of higher education institutions with an assortment of prior successes and failures in the educational systems. They have individual and family histories that can be both a strength and a source of trauma. Students report finding a home or place where they confront or challenge prior perceptions about their educational strengths and barriers. When students recognize their potential via successes in an adult-focused cohort learning, they frequently report experiencing a renewal or resurgence of personal power and self-efficacy.

Together We RISE (Making Excellence Inclusive)
According to the CDC, 2% (1.3 million) individuals, 0-17 identify as transgender. Individuals that identify as transgender have a higher incidence of mental and physical challenges, face health inequities, share a common need for specific types of support, and lack representation. Yet, there still remains a significant gap in strategies for the provision of services for this cohort. It is based on this note that this presentation is pursued.

Nestlé And The Right To Water, M’Ballou Yacine Sanogho
The Journal of International Relations, Peace Studies, and Development
Water scarcity is a significant social and environmental challenge that the world is facing today and which shows no sign of going away anytime soon. According to the Joint Monitoring Program (JMP) of the World Health Organization (WHO) and the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF), “26% of the global population or 2.0 billion people lacked safely managed drinking water.” 2 According to the California’s Bureau of Reclamation, Water covers about 71% of the earth’s surface. 3 97% of the earth’s water is in the oceans. However, this water is too salty for drinking, crops, and most industrial uses, except for …
Primitive Accumulation And Multinational Corporations: The Evolution Of Dispossession And Exploitation In The Rubber Industry, Matthew Rochat
Primitive Accumulation And Multinational Corporations: The Evolution Of Dispossession And Exploitation In The Rubber Industry, Matthew Rochat
The Journal of International Relations, Peace Studies, and Development
I examine how the process of primitive accumulation has led to evolving forms of dispossession and exploitation carried out by multinational corporations in the rubber industry. After a brief review of relevant literature, I outline a novel analytical approach to multinational corporations engaged in natural resource extraction, referred to as the Parasitic Extraction Model. I then demonstrate this approach using three case studies. The first, Leopold II’s Congo, showcases the barbaric underpinnings of primitive accumulation in the rubber industry in its crudest form. The subsequent section shifts to the interwar period with Fordlândia in the Brazilian Amazon where I analyze …

‘Xi Jinping Thought’: Lethal Autonomous Weapons Systems And Military Modernization With Chinese Characteristics, Aiden Warren, Alek Hillas
The Journal of International Relations, Peace Studies, and Development
The article seeks to appraise Beijing’s military modernization and positions on Lethal Autonomous Weapons Systems (LAWS). In examining the rhetoric of Chinese policy makers through a qualitative analysis of relevant policy documents and Chinese statements, the article begins by evaluating the relationship between military modernization and the advancement of China’s innovation and civil- military integration strategies in the Xi Jinping era. Secondly, the article considers, via an analysis of diplomatic statements, the context of Chinese discussions on LAWS under the framework of the Convention on Certain Conventional Weapons (CCW). The analysis proposes it is probable that China is seeking to …

Illinois’ Culturally Responsive Teaching and Leading Standards, approved by the Illinois State Board of Education in March 2021, will be part of teacher education programs throughout the state by the end of the 2022-2023 school year. To this end, we want to provide practical strategies for reflecting on teacher preparation coursework and incorporating the CRTLS in our work with preservice teachers. We will provide a quick review of the content within the standards, but most of the time will be spent on specific examples of what teacher education classrooms might look like with the CRTLS embedded.
