Reflection On Wise Cities And Ai In Community: Sustainable Life Spaces And Kampung Storytelling, Mark Findlay, Li Min Ong Mar 2022

Reflection On Wise Cities And Ai In Community: Sustainable Life Spaces And Kampung Storytelling, Mark Findlay, Li Min Ong

Centre for Commercial Law in Asia

This short paper is a reflection following our presentation made at the ASEAN Law Research Network’s conference on Sustainable Development and Commerce in ASEAN Cities. We had wanted to introduce our thinking, given the strong interest in developing smart cities in the region. We want to emphasise the importance of multidisciplinary approaches in the sustainable development of cities, particularly the voice of social scientists which tends to get left out in discussions over technology. In the race towards “smart” urbanisation, there is a real risk that history and culture – things that give a city “life” – could get decimated …

Impact Of A Dyadic Intervention On Family Supporter Involvement In Helping Adults Manage Type 2 Diabetes, Margaret F. Zupa, Aaron Lee, John D. Piette, Ranak Trivedi, Ada Youk, Michele Heisler, Ann Marie Rosland

Faculty and Student Publications

Background: Family support for adults’ diabetes care is associated with improved self-management and outcomes, but healthcare providers lack structured ways to engage those supporters. Objective: Assess the impact of a patient-supporter diabetes management intervention on supporters’ engagement in patients’ diabetes care, support techniques, and caregiving experience. Design: Multivariate regression models examined between-group differences in support-related measures observed as part of a larger trial randomizing participants to a dyadic intervention versus usual care. Participants: A total of 239 adults with type 2 diabetes and either A1c >8% or systolic blood pressure >160mmHg enrolled with a family supporter. Intervention: Health coaches provided …

Longitudinal Implications Of Social Integration For Age And Gender Differences In Late-Life Physical Functioning, Masahiro Toyama, Heather R. Fuller, Jonix Owino

Psychology Faculty Research

Social integration has documented benefits for late-life health; yet, little is known about its impacts on trajectories of physical functioning. This study examines age and gender differences in the longitudinal associations between social integration and activities of daily living (ADLs) using a hierarchical linear model with three waves of survey data collected over 4 years from the Social Integration and Aging Study (N = 400; baseline mean age = 80.3). Findings indicated some interaction effects of age, gender, and/or social integration on ADL trajectories. Among those of more advanced age, women showed greater increases in ADL limitations than men, …

Toward An Environmentally Sustainable City In The Light Of Industrial Revolution 4.0: A Case Study Of Ho Chi Minh City, Tran Viet Dung Mar 2022

Toward An Environmentally Sustainable City In The Light Of Industrial Revolution 4.0: A Case Study Of Ho Chi Minh City, Tran Viet Dung

Centre for Commercial Law in Asia

Like other large cities in ASEAN, Vietnamese cities have been facing serious urban environment problems such as air pollution, land degradation, weak water drainage and lack of green spaces. These problems are caused by unsustainable patterns of development. City governments have failed to coordinate and integrate city planning consistently. Trends show that governments prefer to take short-term economic profit rather than focus on environmental protection.

Legal Challenges And Opportunities For Peer-To-Peer Electricity Trading In Thailand, Piti Eiamchamroonlarp Mar 2022

Legal Challenges And Opportunities For Peer-To-Peer Electricity Trading In Thailand, Piti Eiamchamroonlarp

Centre for Commercial Law in Asia

Electricity is a critical resource for a country as it powers devices and enables modern living with digital transactions, crypto mining, deployment of electric vehicles (EV) etc. Given these emerging activities, electricity demand is forecasted to keep rising. The peak electricity load in Thailand for 2018, 29,969 MW, will likely increase to 53,997 MW by 2037. However, Thailand, as a party to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change, must consider negative impacts on the environment from electricity generation. To meet these challenges, renewable resources are needed for cleaner electricity generation and ensuring security of electricity supply, while simultaneously …

Indonesia's Termination Of Bilateral Investment Treaties, Lucas Jun Hao Wong Mar 2022

Indonesia's Termination Of Bilateral Investment Treaties, Lucas Jun Hao Wong

Centre for Commercial Law in Asia

Indonesia holds a vast source of untapped potential in terms of its ability to influence global trade. While Indonesia has been a member of the World Trade Organization (WTO) since 1 January 1995, its integration into global value chains remains relatively weak, with the ratio of its trade in goods and services to GDP falling from 48.6% in 2013 to below 40% in 2019. Nonetheless, as Southeast Asia’s largest economy and a member of the G20, Indonesia possesses the capacity to become a key player on the world stage.

A Scoping Review To Inform Care Coordination Strategies For Youth With Traumatic Brain Injuries: Care Coordination Personnel, Cara Palusak, Brandy Shook, Susan C. Davies, Jennifer P. Lundine Mar 2022

A Scoping Review To Inform Care Coordination Strategies For Youth With Traumatic Brain Injuries: Care Coordination Personnel, Cara Palusak, Brandy Shook, Susan C. Davies, Jennifer P. Lundine

Counselor Education and Human Services Faculty Publications

Introduction & Importance: Effective, patient-centered care coordination has been shown to improve outcomes for children with special healthcare needs (CSHCN), who often have complex, long-term involvement with multiple service providers. Traumatic brain injury (TBI) can result in long-term physical, intellectual, social, and emotional disabilities that persist long after acute treatment. Yet, even though it is a chronic condition, TBI remains an area with scarce standardization and research surrounding the complex, long-term care coordination need in this population. The purpose of this scoping review is to summarize current research on outcomes in CSHCN after implementation of care coordinators, whether individual or …

Sweating The Energy Bill: Extreme Weather, Poor Households, And The Energy Spending Gap, Jacqueline M. Doremus, Irene Jacqz, Sarah Johnston Mar 2022

Sweating The Energy Bill: Extreme Weather, Poor Households, And The Energy Spending Gap, Jacqueline M. Doremus, Irene Jacqz, Sarah Johnston

Economics

We estimate the relationship between temperature and energy spending for both low and higher-income U.S. households. We find both groups respond similarly (in percentage terms) to moderate temperatures, but low-income households’ energy spending is half as responsive to extreme temperatures. Consistent with low-income households cutting back on necessities to afford their energy bills, we find similar disparities in the food spending response to extreme temperature. These results suggest adaptation to extreme weather, such as air conditioning use, is prohibitively costly for households experiencing poverty.

Trust In Robotics: A Multi-Staged Decision-Making Approach To Robots In Community, Wenxi Zhang, Willow Wong, Mark Findlay Mar 2022

Trust In Robotics: A Multi-Staged Decision-Making Approach To Robots In Community, Wenxi Zhang, Willow Wong, Mark Findlay

Centre for AI & Data Governance (2019-2025)

Pivoting on the desired outcome of social good within the wider robotics ecosystem, trust is identified as the central adhesive of the HRI interface. However, building trust between humans and robots involves more than improving the machine’s technical reliability or trustworthiness in function. This paper presents a holistic, community-based approach to trust-building, where trust is understood as a multifaceted and multi-staged looped relation that depends heavily on context and human perceptions. Building on past literature that identifies dispositional and learned stages of trust, our proposed Decision to Trust model considers more extensively the human and situational factors influencing how trust …

Global Climate Governance: Rising Trend Of Translateral Cooperation, Nataliya Stranadko Mar 2022

Global Climate Governance: Rising Trend Of Translateral Cooperation, Nataliya Stranadko

Public Affairs and Policy Faculty Publications and Presentations

The transformation from the Kyoto Protocol to the Paris Agreement has been analyzed by international relations scholars, international law, and transnational governance theory. The international relations literature looks at the climate regime from a perspective of power distribution, state interests, institutions, and multilateral negotiations. International law theory focuses on legal analysis and design of international climate agreements. The transnational governance literature examines the participation of transnational actors at different levels of governance. However, each of these theories overlooks a bilateral trend of cooperation in a multilateral setting that arises as part of the construction or reconstruction of the international regime. …

"They Will Change The Situation Immediately": Perpetrator Subgroups And Germany's Genocidal Practices In Southwest Africa, James Michael Thaxton Mar 2022

"They Will Change The Situation Immediately": Perpetrator Subgroups And Germany's Genocidal Practices In Southwest Africa, James Michael Thaxton

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

The genocide of the Herero tribe in German Southwest Africa illuminates the horrors of colonialism broadly and of German settler colonialism more specifically. I contend that the perpetrators of this event can be separated into two broad subgroups, the Old Africans and the Metropole Soldiers, distinguished by their intentions, exploitative and exterminatory respectively, concerning the indigenous tribes. Those intentions were formed over varying lengths of time but are the result of either firsthand experience with the racial hierarchy in the colony or relying on information and misinformation relayed to the metropole. Utilizing primarily letters, diaries, journals, and postcards, I argue …

Growing Tea With Subnational Roots: Tea Party Affiliation, Factionalism, And Gop Politics In State Legislatures, Stella M. Rouse, Charles Hunt, Kristen Essel Mar 2022

Growing Tea With Subnational Roots: Tea Party Affiliation, Factionalism, And Gop Politics In State Legislatures, Stella M. Rouse, Charles Hunt, Kristen Essel

Political Science Faculty Publications and Presentations

Most research has examined the influence of the Tea Party as a social movement or loose organization, but less is known about its influence within legislative party politics, especially at the state level. In this paper, we argue that in this context the Tea Party is primarily an intraparty faction that has caused significant divisions inside the Republican Party. Using an original dataset of legislators across 13 states for the years 2010 to 2013, we examine legislator and district-level characteristics that predict state legislators’ affiliation with the Tea Party. Our results reveal that in some respects legislators affiliated with the …

Is It Us? Is It Them? Or Is It This Place?: Predicting Civility In State Legislatures, Jaclyn J. Kettler, Luke Fowler, Stephanie L. Witt Mar 2022

Is It Us? Is It Them? Or Is It This Place?: Predicting Civility In State Legislatures, Jaclyn J. Kettler, Luke Fowler, Stephanie L. Witt

Political Science Faculty Publications and Presentations

While many scholars and analysts have observed a decline in civility in recent years, there have been few examinations of how political, economic, and institutional structures may partially explain inter-state differences in these trends. We suggest three potential explanations: (1) institutional structures, such as legislative professionalism and gubernatorial power, have created different contexts in which legislators build and maintain inter-personal relationships; (2) partisan competition has led to less bipartisan cooperation and contributed to strained relationships between members of different parties; and, (3) economic inequity and change has contributed to economic anxiety among citizens, contributing to conflict in legislative bodies as …

Evaluation Of A Hands-On Cooking Class And Its Effects On Self-Efficacy In Relation To Healthy Eating In Type 2 Diabetics, Codi A. Jenshak-Gorzinski Mar 2022

Evaluation Of A Hands-On Cooking Class And Its Effects On Self-Efficacy In Relation To Healthy Eating In Type 2 Diabetics, Codi A. Jenshak-Gorzinski

Doctor of Nursing Practice Scholarly Projects

The prevalence of Type 2 diabetes is alarming and poses a great threat to U.S. national health. Chronic diabetes can lead to serious conditions such as heart attack and stroke, and can result in premature mortality (World Health Organization, 2018). Diabetes can be prevented or treated by eating a healthy diet. Cooking classes are a potential way to improve American’s knowledge of nutritional principles and help them become confident that they have the capacity to eat a healthy diet. The purpose of this DNP project was to determine if participation in cooking classes enhanced self-efficacy as it pertains to healthy …

Understanding Cybercrime Offending And Victimization Patterns From A Global Perspective, Jin R. Lee Mar 2022

Understanding Cybercrime Offending And Victimization Patterns From A Global Perspective, Jin R. Lee

International Journal of Cybersecurity Intelligence & Cybercrime

Cybercrime research within criminology and criminal justice sciences has increased over the past few decades, improving the knowledge and evidence-base around cybercrime offending and victimization generally. While earlier cybercrime studies were based primarily in the United States, there has been a recent surge in studies using international samples and multidisciplinary approaches to understand cybercrime patterns. The current issue of the International Journal of Cybersecurity Intelligence and Cybercrime consists of four articles that seek to advance our understanding of cybercrime behaviors from a global perspective. To that end, the objective of this paper is to provide a brief overview of the …

The Spatial Organization Of Pre-Colonial African Kingdoms: The Empires Of Ethiopia & Mali, Victoria O. Alapo Mar 2022

The Spatial Organization Of Pre-Colonial African Kingdoms: The Empires Of Ethiopia & Mali, Victoria O. Alapo

Department of Geography: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Pre-Colonial kingdoms in Sub-Saharan Africa were many, and were organized in unique ways. The old Empires of Ethiopia and Mali were selected for this research because of their antiquity and for their contrasts: Ethiopia was an official Christian Empire for about two millennia, while Mali was the quintessential Sub-Saharan Islamic kingdom. Also, both empires possessed documentation written by traditional Africans, in the form of ancient indigenous manuscripts, which predate the colonial period (i.e., the coming of Europeans) by several centuries. In addition, the research analyzes work that has been done by historians and other academics, and incorporates the reports of …

Does Anxiety Moderate The Relationship Between Adhd Inattention Symptoms And Cognitive Flow States?, A. Shea Hall, Dorothie Cross Mar 2022

Does Anxiety Moderate The Relationship Between Adhd Inattention Symptoms And Cognitive Flow States?, A. Shea Hall, Dorothie Cross

Student Presentations

Background

  • Although some studies have found a positive correlation between ADHD symptoms and self-reported cognitive flow states, other studies do not find such a relationship.
  • ADHD is commonly comorbid with anxiety, which has been found to be negatively correlated with flow states.
  • It is possible that some of the inconsistencies across studies might be explained by level of anxiety.

Purpose

The purpose of the current study is to explore the relationships between self-reported Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) symptoms and cognitive flow states and whether anxiety moderates that relationship.
