Engaging The Heart And The Mind: Mindfulness In Service-Learning, Tevin Monroe
Engaging The Heart And The Mind: Mindfulness In Service-Learning, Tevin Monroe
Community Engagement Student Work
Service-learning is a pedagogy which allows students to test their classroom knowledge in real- world scenarios, while also serving a greater good. Students may find that guided reflection of service-learning provides additional context to their classroom knowledge. Without proper guided reflection, students may not experience deep learning, or may not be critical of the role they play in communities. Mindfulness is one suggested practice to guide students’ reflection, and to promote the more equitable practice of critical service-learning. Through an interactive virtual workshop, students in a civic engagement fellowship program were taught principles of mindfulness and how they may be …

This Fence Makes No Sense: Developing A Community Engagement Curriculum For Swampscott, Ma, Elana Zabar
Community Engagement Student Work
This project sought to understand the best way to integrate non-exclusionary community engagement into Swampscott, Massachusetts. A curriculum that would encourage municipal officials of Swampscott, MA to develop a more inclusive community engagement process was built and presented to local community engagement practitioners, both affiliated and not affiliated with the municipality, for their feedback. The curriculum suggests creative engagement solutions the town can offer to community members throughout a project's timeline, from idea generation to problem definition, to project development, to post-implementation feedback. These methods of engagement, written under the lens of the Transformative Paradigm, were specifically designed to reduce …
Modernization, Inclusion, And Intersectionality: Affordable Housing Policy And Discriminatory Characteristics Of The Fair Housing Act Of 1968, Heath Pitt
Community Engagement Student Work
Housing discrimination and affordability are ongoing issues in the United States; especially for marginalized populations like cisgender women, low-income families and individuals, and the transgender community. These three groups lack adequate protection and acknowledgment under the 1968 Fair Housing Act (FHA). In order to provide them with sufficient protection, the FHA must improve its level of inclusion and be updated and modernized to adapt to today’s society. The purpose of this paper is to highlight the importance of enhancing the FHA, while discovering discriminatory practices under the FHA and the causes and solutions of affordable housing issues. With the use …

Substance Use Awareness: A Unique Look At Social Policy For Children And Families, Malik Hamm
Community Engagement Student Work
This work is a collection of substance use and addiction research gathered in order to assess substance abuse treatment and services in regard to equity and inclusion. The history of the U.S. government’s approach to substance use policy has led to stigma, criminality, and marginalization between groups in our community. Youth and families of all demographics are looking for ethical, informed mental health and substance use services to provide the best outcomes. Stigmatizing language, overly marketed tobacco and alcohol products, restrictive policy, and rigid law-enforcement tactics promoting the criminality of both adults and juveniles for possession, trafficking, and operating under …
Storytelling And Its Role In Cultural Heritage, Jacob Barker, Katrina Powers
Storytelling And Its Role In Cultural Heritage, Jacob Barker, Katrina Powers
Ethnographies of Parkland Student Life
In our research, we wanted to explore how storytelling connects people to cultural heritage. Specifically, we were interested in how mythology, folklore, and religion are displayed. In one case, we explored how mythology and folklore in popular fictional novels connected readers to cultural heritage. Our second focus examined how storytelling amongst immigrant communities connected them to their cultural heritage.

Community Engagement Student Work
Lawrence, Massachusetts is home to a vibrant creative community. The work of artists and art- based organizations has a positive impact within the city. Municipal support in the form of a City Arts Planner or Arts and Culture Department can deepen the reach and impact of the work of these creatives, establish sustainable systems of support, and yield both social and economic benefits. This project is a case for municipal support of the arts in Lawrence. The case for municipal support was presented as a proof of concept to three interviewees, all of whom have ties to Lawrence, and experience …
A Monte Carlo Analysis Of Seven Dichotomous Variable Confidence Interval Equations, Morgan Juanita Dubose
A Monte Carlo Analysis Of Seven Dichotomous Variable Confidence Interval Equations, Morgan Juanita Dubose
Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
Department of Psychological Sciences Western Kentucky University There are two options to estimate a range of likely values for the population mean of a continuous variable: one for when the population standard deviation is known and another for when the population standard deviation is unknown. There are seven proposed equations to calculate the confidence interval for the population mean of a dichotomous variable: normal approximation interval, Wilson interval, Jeffreys interval, Clopper-Pearson, Agresti-Coull, arcsine transformation, and logit transformation. In this study, I compared the percent effectiveness of each equation using a Monte Carlo analysis and the interval range over a range …
An Investigation Of Perceived Authenticity Of Diversity And Black Lives Matter Statements And Their Influence On Applicant Attractiveness, Shelby Nicole Davis
An Investigation Of Perceived Authenticity Of Diversity And Black Lives Matter Statements And Their Influence On Applicant Attractiveness, Shelby Nicole Davis
Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) (i.e., organizations’ diversity and social justice [Black Lives Matter] statements) influences applicant attractiveness to organizations. Using Fortune-500 companies’ diversity and Black Lives Matter statements as indicators of CSR activities, I examined the relationship between CSR activities, perceived authenticity, organizational attractiveness, and person-organization fit. It was hypothesized that diversity statements that specifically mention race and actions taken to promote diverse workplaces (i.e., strong) will be seen as authentic and those organizations will be the most attractive. Additionally, it was hypothesized that social Black Lives Matter (BLM) statements that specifically mention systemic racism/ racial inequality and/or actions to …
Metacognition, Working Memory Capacity, And Recall Performance, Brandi Michelle Glass
Metacognition, Working Memory Capacity, And Recall Performance, Brandi Michelle Glass
Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
Metacognition is beneficial for helping individuals understand their own learning and retrieval processes. Self-explanation is a metacognitive strategy that uses metacognitive skills to guide students through learning activities. Therefore, I predicted that participants who were more metacognitive during self-explanation would be able to recall more information than those who were less metacognitive. As expected, those who scored high in metacognition also scored higher on a recall test. I also expected those with higher working memory capacity to produce more metacognitive statements. This hypothesis was not supported. There was no difference between those with high or low working memory and the …

Valuating The Evidence Base Of Physician Reported Assessment Measures Used In Childhood Adhd Diagnosis, Sarah Ewen
Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
An accurate Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) diagnosis is essential as there are substantial social and functional costs associated with misdiagnosis. Data collected from a 2014 National Survey suggested that one-half of the children diagnosed with ADHD were diagnosed by a pediatrician or family health provider through unstructured behavioral observations or using a checklist that may not adhere to diagnostic guidelines. Additionally, clinicians providing ADHD diagnoses have admitted to possessing limited knowledge on the disorder itself and denied attending continuing education courses on ADHD. The current study sought to answer two research questions: 1) are measures reported for diagnosis by pediatricians evidence-based …
Investigating If Changes In Cannabis Expectancies Mediate Driving After Cannabis Use Intervention Outcomes, Sarah Nicole Elder
Investigating If Changes In Cannabis Expectancies Mediate Driving After Cannabis Use Intervention Outcomes, Sarah Nicole Elder
Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
Driving after cannabis use (DACU) has become an increasing public health concern specifically for the states that have legalized cannabis use. In a 2018 survey, 4.7% of U.S. residents reported driving while impaired by cannabis (Azofeifa et al., 2019). Previous research suggests that several skills are impaired following cannabis use, such as increased lane weaving, slowed reaction time, and distorted perceptions about external stimuli. This effect was seen to extend to frequent cannabis users who also demonstrated driving impairments despite heightened cannabis tolerance (Hartman & Huestis, 2013). With the increase in DACU it is crucial to understand the factors that …

Differences In Growth On Typed And Written We-Cbm, Connor East
Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
Writing is an essential skill for students to have now and later in life. Many students’ writing skills are not proficient for their grade level due to writing being overshadowed by other core academic subjects/areas. Written Expression Curriculum-Based Measurement (WE-CBM) is used to identify those at-risk for poor writing performance, as well as to monitor students’ progress towards reaching an academic goal. This study examined how student performance changed from fall to winter on typed and written responses using WE-CBM. Results show that performance change significantly differed by response type for several scoring metrics for both fourth and fifth grade …

Trust In Government And The Ideological Center Of The American Public, Madison Crenshaw
Trust In Government And The Ideological Center Of The American Public, Madison Crenshaw
[Archive] Belmont University Research Symposium (BURS)
In the age of extreme political polarization, the American public stands more divided and more distrustful of government than ever before. Although polarization continues to persist, the average ideological center of the American public has continued to move to the left as distrust has continued to fall. This paper looks to establish a significant relationship between the American public's trust levels and the average ideological center of the American public from 1994-2017. By analyzing survey data means from Pew Research Center, this paper hopes to determine the influence of the ideological center on levels of trust in the American Public.

Psychology: The Effect Of Guided Meditation And Meditation History On False Memory Susceptibility, Caroline G. Firmin, Jessica Dahm, Khalil Dabdoub, Benjamin Brown
[Archive] Belmont University Research Symposium (BURS)
Meditation is a practice that has been around for thousands of years with numerous benefits ranging from stress reduction to decreases in stress and anxiety. Research also suggests there may potentially be negative consequences of meditation. However, research has not assessed how long-term practitioners of meditation differ from those with less experience. Our study looks at long-term and short-term practitioners’ susceptibility to false memories. To do this, participants were randomly assigned to either a guided meditation or a mind-wandering condition and then tested on the DRM paradigm. Meditation history was also recorded through a questionnaire.

What level of influence do the actions and rhetoric of governors have on constituents' response to vaccination? In this paper, I analyze how the rhetoric of governors and their efforts to combat the coronavirus pandemic has influenced the progression of coronavirus vaccination amongst their constituents. If governors take significant statewide steps and mitigation measures to combat coronavirus and vigorously enforce and advocate for vaccines, those who are of the same political party will become more opinionated in favor of vaccination, and those of opposite parties will become more resistant to vaccination.

The benefits of exercise are clear; they include better overall health, better mood, and less stress (Schultchen et. al., 2019). However, exercise motivations vary (Pate, 1995). Some of these motivations include: health and fitness benefits, social/emotional benefits, weight management, stress management, enjoyment, and appearance (Dacey, 2008). When exercising, many are exposed to an environment of comparison, which has been shown to foster social physique anxiety (Chen, Ku, & Wang, 2012), defined as the “feeling of distress associated with the perceived evaluation of one's physical self” (Frederick & Morrison, 1996). Exercise behavior has been found to change in people with higher …
The Relationship Between Moral Foundations And Substance Abuse Attitudes, Olivia Haffey, Christina Duncan, Samantha Driggers
The Relationship Between Moral Foundations And Substance Abuse Attitudes, Olivia Haffey, Christina Duncan, Samantha Driggers
[Archive] Belmont University Research Symposium (BURS)
Individuals who abuse substances are often morally judged and disregarded in society. The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between moral values and attitudes towards substance abuse. Participants were recruited from introductory to psychology courses at Belmont University and given a modified version of the Perceived Substance Abuse Scale and a scale to measure how they value certain domains of morality (harm, ingroup, purity, authority, reciprocity) using the Moral Foundations Questionnaire. We expect to find positive correlations between the harm, purity, ingroup, and authority domains of morality with negative attitudes towards substance abuse. We also expect there …

Abstract
Gratitude is the quality of being thankful and readily showing appreciation for opportunities in life. Gratitude in an individual can be experienced on two levels: trait and state. Trait gratitude involves a predisposition, interpersonal experience that an individual holds on a daily basis. State gratitude is context based and is experienced during specific events. In past research there seems to be a relationship between meditation practice and levels of trait gratitude, but there is little literature investigating this same connection with state gratitude (Chen et al., 2017). For our research, we wanted to expand on this research and test …

An Exploration Of Online Sex Work, Olivia Haffey, Carolyn Miller, Emily Isbell
[Archive] Belmont University Research Symposium (BURS)
Sex work is deemed one of the world’s most ancient professions, but it has undergone substantial changes within even the last 20 years (Kipling 1888; Jones 2015; Sanders, Connelly and King 2016). The emergence of the Internet has shifted the work locations of sex work from saunas, brothels, and street work to online platforms as well as the use of the Internet as a mediator for in-person sex work (Jones 2015; Jonsson, Sveden and Hyden 2014). This migration in the nature of sex work has changed its delivery and interaction for both workers and clients. The appeals of online sex …
Community Policing: The Foundation Of Trust Between Police And Society, Thomas Crowley
Community Policing: The Foundation Of Trust Between Police And Society, Thomas Crowley
Criminology Student Work
Police officers wear many hats such as protecting people, preventing crimes, and responding to other calls for help. Policing is under a microscope in the current climate of the country with debates about police brutality, body-worn cameras, and the overall trust between police and the public. The most universally accepted way to improve trust between the police and public is through community policing. Studies show the community policing policies have improved community-police relations in the United States. I plan to use this knowledge in my career as a police officer by making sure that every interaction I have with the …
