Fundraising For Idaho Foster Kids, Jodi M. Campbell Apr 2022

Fundraising For Idaho Foster Kids, Jodi M. Campbell

IPS/BAS 495 Undergraduate Capstone Projects

Idaho has an increasing number of children in the foster care system that are not able to be assigned to homes. The system is struggling for resources to provide basic necessities to these children. During my capstone project I created a fundraising event to raise funds to help support the children in the Treasure Valley. I created an online platform as well as an in person event selling my chocolate covered items from my personal business to raise these funds. My efforts were a success in raising $250 to help give these children some items that they need.

Gardening Blog, Ashley Pierce

IPS/BAS 495 Undergraduate Capstone Projects

For this project I chose to create a blog as a resource for new gardeners in the Southern Idaho area. I wanted to offer a free resource for people to be able to learn about something I enjoy, and share my knowledge and perspective with my readers. I found that many people do not know how to begin, and I wanted to offer an accessible resource for them to feel less intimidated and be successful in starting plants from seeds.

Gender Responsive Reentry: Supporting Mothers And Their Children, Michaela Bruder, Ally Malueg, Neve Patterson, Courtney Schallock Apr 2022

Gender Responsive Reentry: Supporting Mothers And Their Children, Michaela Bruder, Ally Malueg, Neve Patterson, Courtney Schallock

Master of Social Work Student Policy Advocacy Briefs

The unique needs and experiences of women with children are not reflected in Minnesota’s state reentry approach or federal reentry approach. The number of women in the correctional system has been steadily rising, which means more women, many of them mothers, are returning to their families and communities without the programming and supports needed to successfully resume their roles as parent and provider. Minnesota must invest in a gender-responsive reentry approach tailored specifically to the needs of women with children.

How Study And Test Formats Impact Foreign Language Vocabulary Learning: Pictures Vs. Words, Marie Pinzone Apr 2022

How Study And Test Formats Impact Foreign Language Vocabulary Learning: Pictures Vs. Words, Marie Pinzone

Celebration of Scholarship 2022

Background: The Revised Hierarchical Model suggests FL vocabulary acquisition is mediated and enhanced by native language vocabulary knowledge (Kroll & Stewart, 1994). The PSE, based on Paivio’s dual coding theory, holds that pictures are remembered better than words due to being encoded by both verbal and pictorial codes (Paivio & Csapo, 1973). Mixed evidence exists regarding whether the PSE obtains in FL vocabulary learning (Carpenter & Olson, 2012). Hockley (2008) found that the PSE for associative recognition occurs even when picture pairings are presented as words at test. Current Study: The present study seeks to replicate and extend …

The Social Science Of Institutional Transformation: Intersectional Change In The Academy, Shauna A. Morimoto Apr 2022

The Social Science Of Institutional Transformation: Intersectional Change In The Academy, Shauna A. Morimoto

Sociology and Criminology Faculty Publications and Presentations

This article examines intersectional praxis as an approach to institutional transformation, arguing that intersectionality is both a catalyst for and outcome of gender equity efforts in the social sciences and other academic STEM fields. As such, approaching gender equity intersectionally can be understood as a way that theory and practice are co-constitutive in social science and hence an important aspect of transforming academic institutions. Through a case study of the US National Science Foundation (NSF) ADVANCE program for gender equity in STEM, I look at the development of ADVANCE from an effort to support women in scientific fields to becoming …

The Impact Of Diet & Different Animal Advocacy Tactics, Andrea Polanco, Jo Anderson Apr 2022

The Impact Of Diet & Different Animal Advocacy Tactics, Andrea Polanco, Jo Anderson

Diet

Many different approaches to advocacy exist within the animal protection movement, from talking to people you know about animal suffering, to sharing social media posts, to protesting in public spaces. Currently, we do not fully understand how these approaches affect people’s behaviors, beliefs, and attitudes towards farmed animals, or even how common they are.

We conducted two studies in the U.S. to address this topic as fully and accurately as possible. The first was a retrospective survey. It explored people’s experiences with different advocacy types within the last five years and measured their current behaviors and attitudes. This tells us …

Plague! Public Health, Community Memory, And Hiv/Aids, Aidan M. Williams Apr 2022

Plague! Public Health, Community Memory, And Hiv/Aids, Aidan M. Williams

Sociology Honors Projects

How does individual trauma influence collective memory? Within queer communities, key social institutions are responsible for communalizing experiences of suffering, forming group narratives of trauma that are shared across vast spatial and generational gaps. These narratives continue to influence individual behavior years after the initial trauma, informing ideas of collective identity within the queer community. In my analysis of 10 interviews, I examined how experiences during the COVID-19 pandemic were influenced by understandings of HIV/AIDS. My interviewees were self-identified members of the queer community spanning many age groups; some of my participants were old enough to remember the height of …

This autoethnographic project extends the work of Argyris and Schön (1974); Houchens (2008); Houchens and Keedy (2009); Houchens, Hurt, Stobaugh, & Keedy (2012); and Houchens, Stewart, and Jennings (2017) by replicating an experiment in reflective practice using a self-coaching protocol as a means for mapping one’s own theories of practice. Economic Agency And Risk Mitigation Among The Classic Period Maya At Holtun, Guatemala, Dawn Crawford

Anthropology Theses and Dissertations

Research into social inequality among the Maya often focuses on how elites gained power, while my research sought to identify how both elites and non-elites used economic decision-making to maintain and/or augment their status. My research tested for economic agency and risk mitigation strategies among elite and non-elite households at a single Maya site, Holtun, in the Central Lowlands. Its purpose was also to test for conservation behavior during a period of abundance.

The data for this dissertation was collected through the excavation of civic ceremonial and domestic plazas, and through lithic analyses of obsidian and chert artifacts from the …
