Decolonising The School Library: Embedding Indigenous Authority, Advocacy, And Power In Information And Learning Spaces, Lana Alsabbagh
New Librarianship Symposia Series: Fall 2021
NZ is a country grappling with its history of settler-colonialism. The Ministry of Education considers indigenous Māori students ‘priority learners,’ as historically they have been severely neglected and harmed by the education system. As the school with the largest Maori student population in New Zealand, Manurewa High School is committed to decolonising and indigenizing the school’s curriculum, marking a radical departure from earlier, Western-controlled models of teaching in a collaborative effort to transform the school’s culture and lead to improved outcomes for Māori students. The school as a whole needs to ensure achievement as well as understanding of all its …

Background
Healthy movement behaviors in early childhood are believed to track to adulthood, potentially imparting protective benefits against non-communicable diseases. Highlighting the collaborative and complementary roles of parents and educators in promoting health of young children, this study aims to enable parents and teachers to successfully promote healthy movement behaviors in young children. Guidelines for physical activity, sedentary screen time, and sleep of children aged 2 to 6 years will be systematically disseminated to parents and teachers of children enrolled in early childhood education centers (ECECs) in Hong Kong. An evaluation will be conducted to assess the implementation process and …
Cultural Values As A Moderator Of The Emotion Suppression To Strain Relationship: A Comparison Of Two Dominant Theoretical Mechanisms, Roxanne C. Lawrence
Cultural Values As A Moderator Of The Emotion Suppression To Strain Relationship: A Comparison Of Two Dominant Theoretical Mechanisms, Roxanne C. Lawrence
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Although the relationship between emotion regulation and deleterious health outcomes is a robust finding in Western cultures, studies show that this effect is attenuated in non-Western cultures. The present study employed an experience sampling method to examine the mitigating effect of cultural values (i.e., individual-level collectivism) on the relationship between emotion regulation and employee strain (i.e., job satisfaction and anxiety) through the theoretical models of emotional dissonance and resource loss (operationalized as inauthenticity and emotional exhaustion). Using data collected from 182 adults working in the service industry, I ran a multilevel path analysis to test the study’s hypotheses. Results indicated …

The Sincerest Form Of Flattery: Nationalist Emulation During The Covid-19 Pandemic, John Givens, Evan Mistur
The Sincerest Form Of Flattery: Nationalist Emulation During The Covid-19 Pandemic, John Givens, Evan Mistur
Faculty Articles
As COVID-19 rapidly spread across the globe, every government in the world has been forced to enact policies to slow the spread of the virus. While leaders often claim responses are based on the best available advice from scientists and public health experts, recent policy diffusion research suggests that countries are emulating the COVID-19 policies of their neighbors instead of responding to domestic conditions. Political and geographic considerations play a role in determining which countries imitate one another, but even among countries that are politically or geographically distant, nationalist regimes seem to favor certain approaches towards the pandemic. We investigate …

A-02 The Development Of A Questionnaire To Measure The Perception Of Marital Dissatisfaction Among Nigerian Immigrants In North America: Immigrant Marital Disruption Questionnaire (Imdq), Jean A. Cadet, Jochebed Ade-Oshifogun, Augusta Y. Olaore
Celebration of Research and Creative Scholarship
The process of acculturalization of Nigerian immigrants is laden with challenges, including marital disruptions; however, we could not find any culturally sensitive tool available to measure marital disruption among this population. Therefore, we developed a tool to measure culturally sensitive factors leading to marital disruptions among Nigerians Immigrants in North America (NINA). A 17-item questionnaire was developed and tested on 160 subjects.
Five constructs derived from the analysis were Financial Stressors, Marital Relationship Deficits, Intercultural Conflicts, Spiritual Systems, and Others. The overall Questionnaire has high construct validity. However, the validity of the individual constructs ranged from Cronbach’s alpha of .54 …

P-13 Predictors Of General Education Teachers Self-Efficacy For Educating Students With Asd, Renette Portecop-Prentice
Celebration of Research and Creative Scholarship
This study examines the influence of ASD-specific training or professional development, peer observations, feedback from consultation/collaboration and teacher attitudes on general education teacher’s self-efficacy beliefs for educating students with ASD, as well as whether knowledge mediates the effect of professional development on teacher self-efficacy. It is hypothesized that the proposed theoretical model of teacher self-efficacy for educating students with ASD will fit an empirical model based on collected data. Data from 536 participants have been collected and are being analyzed. Preliminary results suggest that the hypothesized model does not fit the empirical model. However, the factors appearing to have the …

Engagement Under Pressure: The Impact Of Identity On Engagement During Times Of Crisis, E. Kobena Osam, Nicole Dillard, Dennia Palmer
Online Journal for Workforce Education and Development
Background: Whether it is by creating the conditions that lead to maximizing human capital or the outcomes of productivity, increased performance and work ethic (Karatepe & Olugbade, 2016; Zhong et al., 2015), employee engagement has consistently been linked to workforce development. However, this past year we saw this relationship challenged due to the global pandemic of COVID-19. Additionally, amid COVID-19 a second pandemic of racial injustice created twin crises that further complicated the experiences of employee engagement in the workforce. Purpose: As such, the purpose of this study was to explore how identity-based, qualitative research can provide insight to engagement …

Raising Awareness And Empowering Diverse Survivors: Addressing Mental And Physical Health Needs Among Lgbtqia+ Community Members Post-Sexual Assault, Daniel W. Oesterle, Leah Giorgini, Christopher Eckhardt
Purdue Journal of Service-Learning and International Engagement
Experiences of sexual violence are commonplace among individuals within the LGBTQIA+ communities, with more than 63% of sexual and gender minority (SGM) individuals experiencing victimization. Despite high rates of victimization, few individuals experiencing sexual assault seek services post-assault, with even fewer individuals within the LGBTQIA+ community accessing post-assault care. This is further exacerbated when considering the unmet treatment needs of sexual assault survivors and victims, where individuals commonly experience high rates of internalizing (i.e., post-traumatic stress disorder, depression, anxiety) and externalizing (i.e., substance use/misuse) symptoms for years after experiencing an assault. Although these experiences occur at alarming rates on college …

Impacting Community Well-Being In Lafayette, Indiana, In The Midst Of A Pandemic, Eli Coltin, Eric Flaningam, Jace Newell, Jason Ware
Purdue Journal of Service-Learning and International Engagement
For the past five years, Dr. Jason Ware has centered community-based research and service-learning courses around local community partners’ needs as they focused collectively on community well-being issues. The nature of their work has prioritized qualitative research methods such as narrative inquiry via in-depth interviews and ethnography via immersive observations within varying service-providing institutions such as the Hartford Hub and the Hanna Community Center. COVID-19 and the constant threat of its transmission meant that Dr. Ware, his students, and their community partners had to approach their work differently. They responded with a pivot. They turned to mining large publicly accessible …

Homelessness And Covid-19, Justin Macneill, Alexa Lahey, Nina Teo
Purdue Journal of Service-Learning and International Engagement
The COVID-19 pandemic has exacerbated the struggle of people experiencing homelessness (PEH) and presented new challenges to those serving this vulnerable population. To better understand and articulate how COVID has impacted both PEH and their ecosystem of support, we compared the national response - aggregated via a literature review of both gray and academic literature - to the statewide response in Indiana and the local response in Tippecanoe County.
Local homelessness providers emphasized that organizational partnerships are key - policy changes in one organization can have malignant effect extending throughout and putting additional strain on other organizations within the local …

Purdue Journal of Service-Learning and International Engagement
Black youth face systemic educational and social barriers that impede their development and achievement. Research shows that mentoring equips youth to tackle these barriers and use their racial background as an asset. Additionally, college students have limited opportunities to engage in long-term service to local communities. The Heads Up Teen Mentoring Program was begun in September 2019 to provide local Black teens access to Black role models committed to helping them achieve their goals. We currently serve five local Black teens and pair them with five Black graduate student mentors. We engage in monthly group and one-on-one sessions with our …

Laini Fluellen Charities And Know Your Lemons: Squeezing Out Breast Cancer And Winning The Fight, Kayla Vasilko
Purdue Journal of Service-Learning and International Engagement
Each minute, a woman dies from breast cancer somewhere in the world. The first and most important tool a woman needs to have to win a fight against this disease is the education to identify breast cancer symptoms as early as possible. Laini Fluellen Charities, Inc. (LFC) is an organization dedicated to aiding women in the fight of triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC), a highly aggressive form of breast cancer that characteristically affects young women, has fewer treatment options, and results in lower survival rates overall. Laini Fluellen combats TNBC by representing those most disproportionally affected: young African American and Hispanic …

Estimation And Inference With Near Unit Roots, Peter C. B. Phillips
Estimation And Inference With Near Unit Roots, Peter C. B. Phillips
Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers
New methods are developed for identifying, estimating and performing inference with nonstationary time series that have autoregressive roots near unity. The approach subsumes unit root (UR), local unit root (LUR), mildly integrated (MI) and mildly explosive (ME) specifications in the new model formulation. It is shown how a new parameterization involving a localizing rate sequence that characterizes departures from unity can be consistently estimated in all cases. Simple pivotal limit distributions that enable valid inference about the form and degree of nonstationarity apply for MI and ME specifications and new limit theory holds in UR and LUR cases. Normalizing and …
Robust Inference With Stochastic Local Unit Root Regressors In Predictive Regressions, Yanbo Liu, Peter C. B. Phillips
Robust Inference With Stochastic Local Unit Root Regressors In Predictive Regressions, Yanbo Liu, Peter C. B. Phillips
Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers
This paper explores predictive regression models with stochastic unit root (STUR) components and robust inference procedures that encompass a wide class of persistent and time-varying stochastically nonstationary regressors. The paper extends the mechanism of endogenously generated instrumentation known as IVX, showing that these methods remain valid for short and long-horizon predictive regressions in which the predictors have STUR and local STUR (LSTUR) generating mechanisms. Both mean regression and quantile regression methods are considered. The asymptotic distributions of the IVX estimators are new and require some new methods in their derivation. The distributions are compared to previous results and, as in …
Transportation Planning In Tribal Communities: From Plan Development To Implementation, Cole Grisham
Transportation Planning In Tribal Communities: From Plan Development To Implementation, Cole Grisham
PSU Transportation Seminars
Existing studies surveying transportation planners in Tribal communities have recognized two challenges: (1) that existing planning analysis tools do not always align with Tribal community context and needs, and (2) that it is not always clear what benefits planning provides to transportation project selection and delivery in Tribal communities. These challenges are outlined in a 2020 FHWA Research Needs Statement titled Making Transportation Planning Applicable in Tribal Communities.
This study, therefore, seeks to align available planning analysis tools to Tribal community needs based on a range of contextual factors, and to quantify the benefits of planning analysis in the project …
Limit Theory For Locally Flat Functional Coefficient Regression, Peter C. B. Phillips, Ying Wang
Limit Theory For Locally Flat Functional Coefficient Regression, Peter C. B. Phillips, Ying Wang
Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers
Functional coefficient (FC) regressions allow for systematic flexibility in the responsiveness of a dependent variable to movements in the regressors, making them attractive in applications where marginal effects may depend on covariates. Such models are commonly estimated by local kernel regression methods. This paper explores situations where responsiveness to covariates is locally flat or fixed. In such cases, the limit theory of FC kernel regression is shown to depend intimately on functional shape in ways that affect rates of convergence, optimal bandwidth selection, estimation, and inference. The paper develops new asymptotics that take account of shape characteristics of the function …
On Multicointegration, Peter C. B. Phillips, Igor Kheifets
On Multicointegration, Peter C. B. Phillips, Igor Kheifets
Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers
A semiparametric triangular systems approach shows how multicointegration can occur naturally in an I(1) cointegrated regression model. The framework reveals the source of multicointegration as singularity of the long run error covariance matrix in an I(1) system, a feature noted but little explored in earlier work. Under such singularity, cointegrated I(1) systems embody a multicointegrated structure and may be analyzed and estimated without appealing to the associated I(2) system but with consequential asymptotic properties that can introduce asymptotic bias into conventional methods of cointegrating regression. The present paper shows how estimation of such systems may be accomplished under multicointegration without …
Discrete Fourier Transforms Of Fractional Processes With Econometric Applications, Peter C. B. Phillips
Discrete Fourier Transforms Of Fractional Processes With Econometric Applications, Peter C. B. Phillips
Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers
The discrete Fourier transform (dft) of a fractional process is studied. An exact representation of the dft is given in terms of the component data, leading to the frequency domain form of the model for a fractional process. This representation is particularly useful in analyzing the asymptotic behavior of the dft and periodogram in the nonstationary case when the memory parameter d ≥ 1 2: Various asymptotic approximations are established including some new hypergeometric function representations that are of independent interest. It is shown that smoothed periodogram spectral estimates remain consistent for frequencies away from the origin in the nonstationary …

Previous research demonstrates that pandemics, including COVID-19, have disproportionate effects on communities of color, further exacerbating existing healthcare inequities. While increasing evidence points to the greater threat posed by COVID-19 to Latinx communities, less remains known about how identification as Latinx and migration status influence their perception of risk and harm. In this article, we use cross-sectional data from a large national probability sample to demonstrate a large positive association between ethnic identity and migration status and perceptions of harm from COVID-19 in the US. We find that individuals identifying as Hispanic/Latinx and first-generation immigrants report significantly greater risks of …
