In a first part, this work focuses on the study of the place of the concept of justice in geographical approaches, as well as the relationship between space and society on the one hand, and justice on the other. Then, in the second part, the work exposes the foundations of spatial justice and fairness, and …

Contribution À L'Étude De La Marginalité Spatiale A Travers L’Analyse En Composantes Principales Cas De La Région Souss Massa, Mohamed Jadaoui, Lakbir Ouhajou, El Hassane Elmahdad, El Madani Mountasser

Dirassat

The study of socio-spatial disparities is one of the privileged areas of geographic research. It is based on a rich and evolving conceptual arsenal. In this sense, the notion of “marginality” is used to characterize a state of territorial “underdevelopment” that affects areas that are qualified as marginal, marginalized, peripheral, fragile, excluded, or even in crisis or delayed development, etc. These terms refer to paradigms such as the “centre/periphery” relationship. This article is therefore intended as a contribution to the debate on spatial marginality. This will be approached on the basis of the analysis of a set of indicators likely …

Les Relations Ville-Port : Essai Bibliographique, Atmane Hnaka, El Mati Ouarmassi

Dirassat

This article is an essay of theoretical synthesis on the state of the art of research concerning port cities and city-port relations. Beyond a conceptual approach, the article deals with an analysis of the historical evolution of relations between ports and their cities through modeling work developed by economic and geographic researchers.

Research on city-port relations is more and more abundant, but it is generally focused on the phenomenon of dissociation between the port and its city and the morphological analysis of the mutations of the city-port interface: revitalization of waterfront. While the other forms of interaction between the port …

Dirassat

In order to integrate more rapidly into the globalized economy, the Strait of Gibraltar is a predominantly political economic device. With its port facilities Tanger-Med, Algeciras and Gibraltar, this device configures the global economy and maritime traffic in a context of vertical economic regulation where African platforms like Tangier Med, constitute a gateway for development but at the same time a puzzle in a chessboard. What place then for Africa world in the field of logistics and shipping? What regional integration can result from a race for the production of vertical capital wealth? These are the fundamental questions on which …

Gender And Emotions At Work: Organizational Rank Has Greater Emotional Benefits For Men Than Women, Christa L. Taylor, Zorana Ivcevic, Julia Moeller, Jochen I. Menges, Roni Reiter-Palmon, Marc A. Brackett

Psychology Faculty Publications

The way people feel is important for how they behave and perform in the workplace. Experiencing more positive−and less negative−emotions at work is often associated with greater status and power. But there may be differences in how men and women feel at work, particularly at different levels in their organizations. Using data from a nation-wide sample of working adults, we examine differences in the emotions that men and women experience at work, how gender interacts with rank to predict emotions, if the association between gender and emotions is accounted for by emotional labor demands, and if this relationship differs according …

Webinar: Radar Point Cloud Segmentation Using Gmm In Traffic Monitoring, Siyang Cao

TREC Webinar Series

Intelligent transportation systems (ITS) change our communities by improving the safety and convenience of people’s daily mobility. The system relies on multimodal traffic monitoring, that needs to provide reliable, efficient and detailed traffic information for traffic safety and planning. How to reliably and intelligently monitor intersection traffic with multimodal information is one of the most critical topics in intelligent transportation research. In multimodal traffic monitoring, we gather traffic statistics for distinct transportation modes, such as pedestrians, cars and bicycles, in order to analyze and improve people’s daily mobility in terms of safety and convenience. In this study, we use a …

Musical Instrument Familiarity Affects Statistical Learning Of Tone Sequences., Stephen C Van Hedger, Ingrid Johnsrude, Laura J Batterink Nov 2021

Musical Instrument Familiarity Affects Statistical Learning Of Tone Sequences., Stephen C Van Hedger, Ingrid Johnsrude, Laura J Batterink

Brain and Mind Institute Researchers' Publications

Most listeners have an implicit understanding of the rules that govern how music unfolds over time. This knowledge is acquired in part through statistical learning, a robust learning mechanism that allows individuals to extract regularities from the environment. However, it is presently unclear how this prior musical knowledge might facilitate or interfere with the learning of novel tone sequences that do not conform to familiar musical rules. In the present experiment, participants listened to novel, statistically structured tone sequences composed of pitch intervals not typically found in Western music. Between participants, the tone sequences either had the timbre of artificial, …

Assessment Of Preference, Health Issues, And Spatial Dependence In A Solid Waste Management System, Mohammad Mashiur Rahman

Economics ETDs

The insurmountable population growth in developing countries, specifically in the urban cities, has posed numerous socio-economic and environmental challenges. The growth of household solid waste is one of them, creating environmental disruption and climate change from a broader perspective. This dissertation investigates three issues related to a solid waste management system; the health risks from improper waste management behavior, household's preference to participate in a waste management system, and the solution to a municipality for optimal allocation of waste disposal by multiple techniques. The first paper uses a primary survey data collected in 2016 to investigate the association between health …

Rural Counties Lost More Years Of Life Than Urban Counties In 2020, Yue Sun Nov 2021

Rural Counties Lost More Years Of Life Than Urban Counties In 2020, Yue Sun

Population Health Research Brief Series

Rural mortality rates have been higher than urban mortality rates for decades in the United States. Now, higher COVID-19 mortality rates in rural areas threaten to exacerbate the existing rural mortality penalty. This brief shows that rural counties had higher average years of potential life lost than urban counties in both 2019 and 2020. However, the increase in YPLL between 2019 and 2020 was largest in small rural counties and large rural counties adjacent to metro areas. Federal, state, and local governments must target social, structural, and policy determinants of health and premature mortality that disproportionately affect rural residents.
