Perceptions Of Conflict Management In Relationships, Shae Page
Perceptions Of Conflict Management In Relationships, Shae Page
Undergraduate Honors Theses
Managing conflict is something that is unavoidable, especially within romantic relationships. There are several factors that can i.nfluence how successfully a person manages conflict; such as the type of conflict involved, the conflict management strategy they employ, and possibly even their adult attachment style. The purpose of this study was to see if the perceived success of conflict management would be affected by a person's adult attachment style, and if certain conflict management strategies would be associated with certain attachment styles. Seventy seven participants read four sets of biographies and conflict scenarios and answered questions about perceived success of conflict …

Community-Based Hiv Prevention Strategies For African American Men Who Have Sex With Men, Dean Michael Aguon
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
The success of community-based organizations (CBOs) that provide HIV prevention services depends on strong evaluations to ensure the effective use of resources for HIV prevention strategies. However, there is lack of frameworks or process models to provide best practices for implementing HIV interventions by CBOs, and there is a gap in understanding regarding interventions focused on reducing HIV among African American men who have sex with men (MSM). This study addressed CBO employees’ lived experiences within a single organization in Las Vegas, examining program creation, implementation, and measurable outcomes for the African American MSM population, which the research question was …

Impact Of Culturally Diverse Leadership In Finance Organizations On Job Satisfaction And Turnover Intent, Yashica Bailey
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Finance organizations are taking on the challenges involved in keeping workers and determining the reasons why there is turnover within a certain time period. Leaders need to develop cultural knowledge to effectively understand and aid organizations in terms of job satisfaction and avoiding turnover intent. When workers are committed and loyal, companies save time and money. The purpose of the study was to determine the impact of culturally diverse leadership on job satisfaction and turnover intent. Herzberg’s two-factor theory was used to address behaviors and determine outcomes. The research addressed how culturally diverse leadership influenced job satisfaction and turnover intentions …

Critical Factors That Influence Job Attitudes Among Employees In The Disaster Management Sector, Leslie Myers Mccall
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Professional attitudes toward results-oriented performance cut across job sectors; however, they are pronounced among disaster management personnel. Within the disaster management sector (DMS), commitment to the organization is critical to retention and quality services and has been shown to be related to degree of work satisfaction; however, research remains lacking related to the specific needs of the DMS related to employee and volunteer worker attraction, engagement, and retention. The purpose of this study was to explore job attitudes among disaster management sector (DMS) workers to create and support a more effective solution to employee job attitude problems and to promote …

Resilience As A Mediator Of Perceived Organizational Justice And Turnover Intention For Licensed School Counselors, Autumn Warren Raffety
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
School counselor shortages and high turnover rates have been reported in school districts across the United States. These high turnover rates have led to critical problems for educational institutions as counselors serve a vital role in organizational success and stability. The purpose of this quantitative study was to investigate the relationship between organizational justice and turnover intention and whether resilience mediated this relationship for 102 licensed school counselors working in elementary and secondary schools in the United States. Equity theory provided the theoretical foundation for this study, and a nonexperimental correlational research design was used to examine the research questions. …

Effects Of Mindful Attentional Regulation On Illicit Opioid Use For Individuals Participating In Medication Assisted Treatment: A Pilot Study, Stephen Sooter
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
AbstractIllicit opioid use takes thousands of Americans’ lives each year, reduces the quality of life for affected individuals, and results in sizable socioeconomic costs. Existing research has supported medication-assisted treatment (MAT) for this condition; however, MAT participants often continue to experience opioid craving and using behaviors. Mindfulness based relapse prevention (MBRP) uses mindfulness meditation and cognitive behavioral therapy to reduce likelihood of substance use relapse. This study used a combination of physical dependence theory, positive incentive theory, and classical conditioning theory to evaluate the impact of MBRP on illicit opioid use and cravings in a quantitative randomized, controlled experimental design. …

Structured Training Programs For Direct Support Professionals On Behavior Intervention Support Plans, Melody Lane Barnes-Meisenhelder
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Direct support professionals work with developmentally disabled individuals and are responsible for implementing behavior intervention support plans (BISPs). Little is known about the efficacy of supplemental BISP training in these professionals. The purpose of this quantitative experimental study was to investigate the efficacy of BISP training to improve knowledge and applied understanding of BISPs in direct support professionals. Social validation, treatment fidelity, and change theories served as the foundations of the study. Seventy-three newly hired direct support professionals were randomized into an experimental group with a 2-day workshop training or a standard training group. BISP knowledge was assessed before and …

Large emergency management organizations are organizations in which women are known to be hindered from becoming leaders. However, the effects that lack of opportunities for advancement has on women’s motivation and workplace attitude have not been thoroughly addressed. The purpose of this qualitative study was to explore the experiences of women working at a large emergency management organization, specifically how perceptions of the glass ceiling affected their motivation and attitude in the workplace. The research questions were focused on gender limitations in career advancement, motivational factors, including extrinsic and intrinsic, and the morale of women who had experiences with gender …
Hospice Social Workers In The Death With Dignity Process, Lisa M. Carter
Hospice Social Workers In The Death With Dignity Process, Lisa M. Carter
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Hospice social workers are in an ethical conundrum due to the contrast between honoring clients’ self-determined life closure and hospice organization prescribed non-participation in requests for physician-assisted death. The National Hospice and Palliative Care Association and the International Hospice and Palliative Care Association have issued position statements that the hospice philosophy of care is to provide comfort and reduce suffering, not to hasten death. Social workers are bound by a code of ethics to honor patient choice in end-of-life decisions. This generic qualitative study gives voice to hospice social workers in the Pacific Northwest regarding their motivations and responses to …
Optimizing The Use Of Normative Data In Dementia Diagnostic Evaluations, Laurie Holler
Optimizing The Use Of Normative Data In Dementia Diagnostic Evaluations, Laurie Holler
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Cognitive tests are typically scored and interpreted using an appropriate normative reference group, often similar age individuals with similar levels of education. Psychometric testing theory presupposes that demographic correction is always beneficial, supporting the ubiquitous use of age and education correction in clinical practice. In the context of dementia, however, there is some evidence suggesting that demographic correction (specifically age correction) may reduce the sensitivity of cognitive tests to age-related cognitive decline. It was hypothesized that age correction would reduce the utility of cognitive tests for detecting cognitive change in individuals with mild cognitive impairment and mild dementia due to …

Addressing Work-Induced Stress And Depressive Symptoms In Police Officers, Demetrius Markey Latham Jr
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Police officers across the nation face a significant issue as it relates to work-induced stress and depressive symptoms. Specifically, the problem is the lack of preventative mental health services available to officers. This study aims to explore the perceived presence of work-induced stress and depressive symptoms in patrol officers employed by the Field Police Department (Pseudonym; FPD). To gather these data, the potential research participants were offered the ability to take an online anonymous survey. The results indicated that many of the survey participants were suffering from work-related stress and depressive symptoms. The research results further displayed many of the …
Examining Personal And Organizational Factors Leading To Police Officers’ Underutilization Of Employee Assistance Programs, Michael David Leary
Examining Personal And Organizational Factors Leading To Police Officers’ Underutilization Of Employee Assistance Programs, Michael David Leary
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Police officers routinely get exposed to stressful or traumatic events throughout the tenure of their careers, which can lead to a build-up of emotions and internal stress. Consequently, research has shown that police officers have a higher suicide rate than the general public. Previous studies demonstrated that the majority of police officers have little knowledge about their provided employee assistance programs (EAP), and fewer yet have used the programs. The purpose of this quantitative study was to determine whether a significant relationship existed between and among factors such as self-stigma of seeking help, social stigma of receiving psychological help, attitudes …

Stress Perceptions And Verbal Commands For Law Enforcement In High-Stress Situations, John Kenneth Gibson
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Acute stress can have a negative effect on the physiology and cognitive performance of peace officers when they are engaged in high-stress situations. This could lead to injury or loss of life if a mistaken perception occurs or incorrect decision is made by the officer or suspect. The purpose of this qualitative phenomenological study was to explore the perceptions of stress for peace officers who issue verbal commands to an aggressive role-playing suspect in a use-of-force scenario. The theoretical framework was Lazarus and Folkman's transactional theory of stress and coping. Data were collected from observations, field notes, and semi-structured interviews …
Understanding The Role That The Internet And Social Media Plays In Suicide Survivor Bereavement, Catherine Merle Perusse
Understanding The Role That The Internet And Social Media Plays In Suicide Survivor Bereavement, Catherine Merle Perusse
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Every year more than 47,000 individuals die by suicide in the United States, leaving behind numerous family and friends who become suicide survivors. While there are prodigious amounts of research on suicidal behavior, little research has focused on what the surviving family members, friends, and community members need after the loss. Many suicide survivors use social media to address their grief and pain in a very public manner. A constructionist social theory of grief and existential phenomenology provided the framework for this qualitative study to examine the use of the Internet and social media as a forum for those grieving …

The Impact Of Community Churches And Barbershops On Preventive Care Utilization Among African American Men, Quiante Chappell Hager
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Preventive health care screening plays an essential role in reducing chronic diseases and mortality rates; yet, even as health care access has increased, African American men’s utilization of preventive screenings remains low in rural areas. The purpose of this qualitative case study was to investigate why African American men are not utilizing preventive care services and ascertaining the impact that social determinants may have on their utilization of these services. The theoretical framework of this research study comprised the social-ecological modal and health belief model to investigate the barriers to preventive care utilization in the African American community. Twelve African …
Attitudes Toward Seeking Counseling Of Women Residing In Public Housing, Belinda M. Newkirk
Attitudes Toward Seeking Counseling Of Women Residing In Public Housing, Belinda M. Newkirk
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Women living in public housing projects experience adverse outcomes because they do not seek treatment for mental illness. It is unclear whether such women have attitudes toward voluntarily accessing mental healthcare services affected by their optimism, experienced stigma, self-efficacy, and resilience. The purpose of this quantitative study was to determine whether the individual determinants of resilience, self-efficacy, experienced stigma, and optimism predicted attitudes toward seeking professional mental health services of women living in public housing based on the self-efficacy, resilience, stigma, optimism, and help-seeking behavior theories. The first research question focused on bivariate correlations among resilience, self-efficacy, experienced stigma, and …

Integrating Diverse Perspectives For Managing Neighborhood Trees And Urban Ecosystem Services In Portland, Or (Us), Lorena Nascimento, Vivek Shandas
Urban Studies and Planning Faculty Publications and Presentations
Municipalities worldwide are increasingly recognizing the importance of urban green spaces to mitigate climate change’s extreme effects and improve residents’ quality of life. Even with extensive earlier research examining the distribution of tree canopy in cities, we know little about human perceptions of urban forestry and related ecosystem services. This study aims to fill this gap by examining the variations in socioeconomic indicators and public perceptions by asking how neighborhood trees and socioeconomic indicators mediate public perceptions of ecosystem services availability. Using Portland, Oregon (USA) as our case study, we assessed socioeconomic indicators, land cover data, and survey responses about …

Glass Beadmaking And Enamel Lampwork In Paris, 1547-1610: Archival And Archaeological Data, Élise Vanriest
Glass Beadmaking And Enamel Lampwork In Paris, 1547-1610: Archival And Archaeological Data, Élise Vanriest
BEADS: Journal of the Society of Bead Researchers
This article presents beadmaking in Paris during the second half of the 16th century as seen through period documents and artifacts. Parisian archives document beadmaking by artisans called patenôtriers who made a wide range of glass buttons and jewelry, including beads. Records of the patenôtriers’ guild provide an idea of the number of artisans engaged in this activity, while notarial contracts and estate inventories reveal individual careers and the material dimension of beadmaking in Paris. Patenôtriers obtained their materials – soda glass and enamel supplied as tubes, rods, or ingots – from glassmakers in rural France, Altare in Italy, and …
A Chemical Comparison Of Black Glass Seed Beads From North America And Europe, Danielle L. Dadiego
A Chemical Comparison Of Black Glass Seed Beads From North America And Europe, Danielle L. Dadiego
BEADS: Journal of the Society of Bead Researchers
Analysis of the elemental composition of glass has gained traction over the past few decades. The growing interest and utilization of non-destructive and micro-destructive analytical techniques has allowed for a more in-depth understanding of glass production, distribution, and consumption. The analysis of glass trade beads in particular has led to the development of a chronological sequencing for non-diagnostic seed beads opacified with metal oxides as well as ore sourcing for cobalt-blue and red beads. There is deficient research on 18th-century glass bead composition, including black manganese-colored beads. This article explores the elemental composition of 162 black seed beads from three …

The Trade Beads Of Fort Rivière Tremblante, A North West Company Post On The Upper Assiniboine, Saskatchewan, Karlis Karklins
BEADS: Journal of the Society of Bead Researchers
The archaeological investigation of Fort Rivière Tremblante, a North West Company post that operated from 1791 to 1798 in what is now southeastern Saskatchewan, Canada, yielded 20,119 glass beads representing 63 varieties, as well as seven wampum. While the bulk of the collection is composed of drawn seed beads, it also contains an exceptional variety of fancy wound beads. A comparison with bead assemblages recovered from other contemporary fur trade sites in western Canada reveals that both the North West Company and the Hudson’s Bay Company carried much the same bead inventory in the region around the turn of the …
