A Survey Of And Site Treatment Plan For The Belle Creek Mounds Archeological Site, 21gd0072, In Goodhue County, Minnesota, Alexander T. Anton
All Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Other Capstone Projects
The Prairie Island Indian Community (PIIC) recently purchased property, on which a portion of a prominent archeological site, encompassing 67 formerly documented burial mounds, resides. In order to better protect the burial mounds and other culturally significant material on the site, as well as on sites residing on the remainder of their new property, the PIIC enlisted the support of Minnesota State University, Mankato’s Earth Science, Archeology, Resources, and Terrestrial Hazards (EARTH) Systems Research Laboratory in developing a site treatment plan. Developing a useful site treatment plan necessitated conducting a geoarcheological survey of a portion of the archeological site, known …
No Future For Academic Crips: An Autoethnographic Crippling Of Academic Futurity, A. Adams
No Future For Academic Crips: An Autoethnographic Crippling Of Academic Futurity, A. Adams
All Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Other Capstone Projects
No Future for Academic Crips attempts to situate crip theory, critical disability studies, and communication theory squarely in the context of academia, problematizing the constraints placed on autistic identity by the demands of a graduate education. Utilizing autoethnographic vignettes along with theoretical writings regarding the creation and consolidation of crip identity, this thesis theorizes what a “neuroqueer future” looks like for academics. Six vignettes are presented to demonstrate strategies for survival employed in academic spaces, followed by analysis contextualizing and criticizing those strategies. Finally, implications for neuroqueer futurity and identity are discussed.
The Impact Of Covid-19 On The Use Of Academic Library Resources, Ruth Connell, Lisa Wallis, David Comeaux
The Impact Of Covid-19 On The Use Of Academic Library Resources, Ruth Connell, Lisa Wallis, David Comeaux
Faculty Publications
The COVID-19 pandemic has greatly impacted higher education, including academic libraries. This paper compares the use of library resources (including interlibrary loan, website and discovery tool pageviews, database use, patron interactions, etc.) at three university libraries before and after the pandemic. The latter part of the 2019 and 2020 spring semesters are the timeframes of focus, although two control timeframes from earlier in those semesters are used to determine how the semesters differed when the coronavirus was not a factor. The institutions experienced similar patterns of use across many metrics.
The Balancing Act Is Magnified: U.S. Mothers’ Struggles Amidst A Pandemic, Grace Ellen Brannon, Molly Wiant Cummins
The Balancing Act Is Magnified: U.S. Mothers’ Struggles Amidst A Pandemic, Grace Ellen Brannon, Molly Wiant Cummins
Communication Faculty Publications - Archive
Successes are often noticed in reflection after an event; struggles are felt in the moment. When COVID-19 was recognized as a public health emergency in the United States (US), many mothers felt their struggles more acutely. Much of 2020 feels like a pressure cooker for mothers, where the steam valve does not fully relieve the mounting pressure they felt because of COVID-19. Most families are experiencing additional stress due to COVID-19, but in heterosexual couples, that work disproportionately falls to women, as they are spending, on average, fifteen hours more per week on education and household tasks (Cohen and Hsu). …
Issues Of Elder Care Among Migrant Workers In Contemporary Rural China: Filial Piety Redefined From A Foucauldian Perspective, Longtao He, Kate Van Heugten, Maria Perez-Y-Perez, Yongqiang Zheng
Issues Of Elder Care Among Migrant Workers In Contemporary Rural China: Filial Piety Redefined From A Foucauldian Perspective, Longtao He, Kate Van Heugten, Maria Perez-Y-Perez, Yongqiang Zheng
Faculty Publications - College of Social Work
This article reports on research that explored rural migrant workers’ experiences of returning to their hometown to provide care for elderly parents diagnosed with cancer. The authors used a culturally integrated approach to Foucauldian discourse analysis to consider how 24 participants narrated their experiences of care in China. The discourse of care demonstrated a strong commitment to filial piety despite their unique care challenges, and this commitment was bolstered by discourses that emphasized how much parents had sacrificed, as well as by a persistent forgetting of experiences or background details that suggested any lack of parental sacrifice in recent Chinese …

Spirituality Integrated Interventions For Caregivers Of Patients With Terminal Illness: A Systematic Review Of Quantitative Outcomes, Yongqiang Zheng, Anna Cox Cotton, Longtao He, Leslie Wuest
Faculty Publications - College of Social Work
This systematic review of published quantitative research was conducted to explore the effects of spirituality-integrated interventions for informal caregivers of terminally ill patients. Multiple databases were searched for articles published between January 2004 and November 2019. Twelve randomized controlled trials were identified. Methodological quality was assessed using the revised Cochrane Collaboration’s tool for assessing risk of bias. Studies were notably diverse in terms of spiritual background, intervention design, technology used, and outcomes measures. Spirituality-integrated interventions were found to show positive outcomes for caregivers. However, methodological flaws negatively affected the quality of most studies, warranting further and rigorous research into the …
Symposium: Expanding Compassion Beyond The Covid-19 Pandemic, Jenny Roberts
Symposium: Expanding Compassion Beyond The Covid-19 Pandemic, Jenny Roberts
Scholarly Articles in Law Reviews & Journals
Compassionate relief matters. It matters so that courts may account for tragically unforeseeable events, as when an illness or disability renders proper care impossible while a defendant remains incarcerated, or when family tragedy leaves an inmate the sole caretaker for an incapacitated partner or minor children. It matters too, as present circumstances make clear, when public-health calamities threaten inmates with literal death sentences. It matters even when no crisis looms, but simply when continued incarceration would be "greater than necessary" to achieve the ends of justice.
Competition And Technical Efficiency For General Medical And Surgical Hospitals In Georgia, Nathan Ekow Davies
Competition And Technical Efficiency For General Medical And Surgical Hospitals In Georgia, Nathan Ekow Davies
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
The primary aim of this study was to enhance understanding of the fundamental socioeconomic problem associated with inefficient hospital competition in the United States in terms of demand and supply of services as well as the efficiency of hospitals. The relationship between market competition and hospital efficiency was investigated among general medical and surgical hospitals in Georgia. The X-efficiency theory was used which defines efficiency as the degree of effectiveness that an organization can maintain while operating in imperfect competition. The theory is most applicable in terms of addressing imperfect market characteristics of the healthcare industry. Correlations between efficiency and …
Examining The Dunning-Kruger Effect In Autism Knowledge, Information Sourcing, And Endorsement Of Vaccination Policy, Alexandra Reed
Examining The Dunning-Kruger Effect In Autism Knowledge, Information Sourcing, And Endorsement Of Vaccination Policy, Alexandra Reed
PCOM Psychology Dissertations
The purpose of this study was to further examine the Dunning-Kruger effect as it relates to knowledge of autism, source of information, and endorsement of vaccination policy. Specifically, the study assessed the relationship between confidence in autism awareness and the belief that vaccines cause autism. It also examined the relationship between the source of information regarding autism and vaccines and vaccination attitudes. Last, it assessed whether individuals with higher confidence levels in the internet would be more likely to have both anti-vaccination attitudes and lower awareness of autism facts. Adult participants (N = 199) were surveyed on various social media …
Executive Functioning In Persons Undergoing Hemodialysis, Alexandria Diguiseppe
Executive Functioning In Persons Undergoing Hemodialysis, Alexandria Diguiseppe
PCOM Psychology Dissertations
Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is a condition in which damaged kidneys cannot properly filter blood throughout the body. This results in excess fluid and waste products to remain in the bloodstream, which can lead to other health complications if not treated. Kidney failure occurs when an individual has 10-15% of optimal kidney functioning, resulting in toxic levels of waste in the bloodstream. Recent literature has demonstrated that individuals receiving dialysis have poorer cognitive functioning compared to the general population, especially in regard to executive functioning. The purpose of the current study was to identify the executive functioning abilities in a …
Predictors Of Postdeployment Distress In Female Veterans, Shalonda C. Griffin
Predictors Of Postdeployment Distress In Female Veterans, Shalonda C. Griffin
PCOM Psychology Dissertations
The female veteran population is expected to increase over the next few decades, representing approximately 16.3% of the living population by the year 2042. Although research exists in regard to the entire veteran population, research relating to female veterans is lacking. The purpose of this study was (a) to identify factors associated and predictive of postdeployment distress and (b) to identify and explore stressors specific to female veterans’ experiences once they separate from the military. Findings from the study revealed significant relationships between the predictive factors (i.e., Life Events, Support, and Family Experiences) and criterion variables (i.e., Perceived Stress and …
The Relationship Between Locus Of Control, Affective Disorders, And Weight Loss Expectations In Adults Seeking Bariatric Surgery, Rachel Brookland
The Relationship Between Locus Of Control, Affective Disorders, And Weight Loss Expectations In Adults Seeking Bariatric Surgery, Rachel Brookland
PCOM Psychology Dissertations
Bariatric surgery is the most effective long-term treatment for severe obesity. Although bariatric surgery results in significant weight loss for many patients, variability exists in expectations surrounding postoperative outcomes. Therefore, this study examined two psychosocial factors that may contribute to variability in weight loss expectations among adults seeking bariatric surgery: affective disorders and locus of control. Specifically, it was hypothesized that individuals scoring higher on external measures of locus of control would report lower weight loss expectations for surgery than those scoring higher on internal measures of locus of control (as measured by the Levenson’s Multidimensional Locus of Control Scale, …
The Association Between Sluggish Cognitive Tempo, Big Five Personality Factors, And Comorbid Clinical Syndromes In Adults Seeking Treatment For Adhd, Lauren Truskey
PCOM Psychology Dissertations
Sluggish cognitive tempo (SCT) is a cluster of symptoms, including daydreaming, mental confusion, slowed thinking, and hypoactivity, that are believed to overlap and be frequently comorbid with attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). Research examining the relationship between personality and symptoms of SCT in adults with ADHD is limited. The purpose of the current study was to determine whether a relationship exists between SCT, Big Five personality factors, and ADHD, after accounting for comorbid anxiety and depression in a clinical adult sample. Archival data from a university-based outpatient clinic specializing in the assessment and treatment of adult ADHD were collected from an …
The Effects Of Child-Adult Relationship Enhancement (Care) Training In Reducing Restraints And Staff Injuries, Pali Payne-Storey
The Effects Of Child-Adult Relationship Enhancement (Care) Training In Reducing Restraints And Staff Injuries, Pali Payne-Storey
PCOM Psychology Dissertations
Inpatient hospitalization provides a way to treat and stabilize children and adolescents with mental health issues, including externalizing behavioral problems. However, little research exists concerning effective evidence-based approaches to treating externalizing behaviors in inpatient psychiatric settings. Physical restraints, chemical restraints, and seclusion are often used to calm violent outbursts by patients, despite evidence indicating such measures cause psychological and physical trauma to patients and employees. The Child–Adult Relationship Enhancement (CARE) program is an alternative approach designed to reduce externalizing behaviors by fostering better relationships between patients and staff. CARE is based on the premise that when adults create positive interactions …

Do The Age And Drama Type Of Individuals Affect Their Perceived Social Status?, Bradly A. Mcginnis
Do The Age And Drama Type Of Individuals Affect Their Perceived Social Status?, Bradly A. Mcginnis
College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations
Drama is a type of performative, interpersonal conflict where traditional victim/aggressor dynamics seen in most types of bullying does not always appear. Different personalities display different types of drama, which may have different levels of usefulness across development. I am interested in discovering whether the level of target social status changes for different drama types across the lifespan. This interaction between target social status and drama type was analyzed by a 2 x 3 design with an expected 2 x 2 interaction. Overall, there were non-significant main effects and a non-significant interaction in the 2 x 3 between subjects ANOVA. …
Exploring Preservice Teachers’ Practices And Perspectives On Whiteness: Development And Initial Validation Of The Whiteness Components Scale, Falynn Amor Thompson
Exploring Preservice Teachers’ Practices And Perspectives On Whiteness: Development And Initial Validation Of The Whiteness Components Scale, Falynn Amor Thompson
Theses and Dissertations--Educational, School, and Counseling Psychology
For decades, educational scholars have considered and investigated a number of factors (e.g., teacher beliefs and expectations, racism, and inadequate school resources) that maintain the negative schooling experiences of Black students. Recently, scholars have identified components of whiteness as factors informing the adverse educational experiences of these students. To date, however, few researchers have empirically examined attitudes, behaviors, and perspectives of whiteness in educational settings and among educational stakeholders. In addition, no study has explored an association between whiteness components and Black students’ overall educational experiences. The dearth of these studies in the educational and psychological literatures is due in …
“I Knew I Wanted More For Myself”: Sexual Minority Men’S Narratives About Getting Help For Intimate Partner Violence, Jonathan Ryser-Oatman
“I Knew I Wanted More For Myself”: Sexual Minority Men’S Narratives About Getting Help For Intimate Partner Violence, Jonathan Ryser-Oatman
Theses and Dissertations--Educational, School, and Counseling Psychology
Sexual minority men experience intimate partner violence (IPV) at rates similar to, if not higher, than heterosexual individuals (Finneran & Stephenson, 2013). IPV is associated with a range of negative health outcomes in this population, such as increased risk for depression and anxiety (Miller & Irvin, 2017) and increased sexual risk-taking and subsequent HIV acquisition (Craft & Serovich, 2005; Houston & McKirnan, 2007). Many barriers prevent sexual minority men from getting help for IPV including stigma-related stressors, socioeconomic status, HIV status, perceived lack of helping resources, and a lack of knowledge about IPV (Duke & Davidson, 2009; Edwards, Sylaska, & …
When Worlds Collide: An Intersectional Approach To Understanding The Relationship Experiences Of Bisexual-Identifying Asian Men With Same And Different Gender Partners, Cheryl Kwok
Theses and Dissertations--Educational, School, and Counseling Psychology
The relationship experiences of bisexual-identifying men of color have been neglected in psychological studies of race, gender, and sexuality. Few studies, if any, have examined the relationship experiences of Asian bisexual men, even though this population’s multiple marginalized and stigmatized social identities increase their health risks (Bryant-Davis, 2007; Carter, 2007; Ching et al., 2018). Bisexuality is commonly defined by an individual’s intimate partner attraction and/or behavior (e.g., Swan & Habibi, 2018), making relationship experiences fundamental to bisexual identity. More generally, intimate relationships can contribute to and/or pose challenges to psychological well-being (Feinstein, et al., 2016; Whitton et al., 2018), yet …
"Now Thinking About It, It's Freedom": Conceptualizing Sexual Pleasure For Fat, Queer Women, Carolyn Elizabeth Meiller
"Now Thinking About It, It's Freedom": Conceptualizing Sexual Pleasure For Fat, Queer Women, Carolyn Elizabeth Meiller
Theses and Dissertations--Educational, School, and Counseling Psychology
Research considering the positive aspects of sexuality, such as pleasure, within a cultural context is especially important for groups of people that are often seen as separate from the experience of sexuality, such as fat, queer women. Due to perceptions of their bodies and how their sexuality goes against traditional heteronormativity, fat, queer women's experiences with sex and pleasure are under represented. Using a critical sexuality framework, the present study sought to explore the definitions and experiences of sexual pleasure for fat, queer women.
In the present study, constructivist grounded theory methods (Charmaz, 2014) were used to analyze the definitions …
Effects Of Mass Shootings On Life Satisfaction Of First Responders, Hanna M. Garza
Effects Of Mass Shootings On Life Satisfaction Of First Responders, Hanna M. Garza
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Mass shootings are devastating events that occur in many communities in the United States. Mass shootings bring significant psychological distress and contribute to the development of trauma. The communities affected by mass shootings rely on an effective and efficient response from first responders who assist survivors by providing psychological and physical assistance. Because first responders are the first to deal with the aftermath of mass shootings, they assume immediate secondary trauma. The purpose of this quantitative correlational study was to examine whether a statistically significant relationship existed between the independent variables of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), anxiety, and the three …
Street-Level Bureaucracy And Perceptions Of Juvenile Prostitution, Leshian J. Lockwood
Street-Level Bureaucracy And Perceptions Of Juvenile Prostitution, Leshian J. Lockwood
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Juveniles in the United States continue to be arrested for prostitution even though the U.S. Federal law recognizes them as victims of sex trafficking. The purpose of this cross-sectional, quantitative study was to explore what factors law enforcement officers consider when encountering a juvenile involved in prostitution that influences their judgment on whether the juvenile is a victim of sex trafficking or a juvenile delinquent. Each of the 50 U.S. states has laws that address juvenile sex trafficking. The research questions for this study centered around the Trafficking Victim Protection Act (TVPA) and factors that influence officers' use of discretion …
Exploring The Value Of Technology Within Cross-Departmental Communications, Brian J. Luckey
Exploring The Value Of Technology Within Cross-Departmental Communications, Brian J. Luckey
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
While many midsized businesses have invested in technology to support business operations, most have not realized the potential value of using technology to collaborate cross-departmentally. There is a lack of knowledge concerning strategies for using technology to facilitate effective organizational communications, which has resulted in operating technology investments being made without corresponding investments in communication technologies. The purpose of this qualitative case study was to fill the knowledge gap concerning the impact of technology for cross-departmental communications. The theoretical foundation for this study was based on systems theory, organizational theory, and stakeholder theory. The key research question involved the impact …
Military Wives’ Perspectives Of The Impact Of Deployment On Marital Satisfaction, Karla A. Morton
Military Wives’ Perspectives Of The Impact Of Deployment On Marital Satisfaction, Karla A. Morton
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
With the inception of the Global War on Terror in 2001, over one and a half million United States military soldiers have deployed overseas to combat zones. Consequently, soldiers and their spouses have undergone numerous psychological challenges as well as a shift in the marital dynamics during a deployment. Difficulties in relationships created by the demands of deployment may lead to the dissolution of a marriage. Hence, the purpose of this study was to quantitatively examine the impact of military deployment on marital satisfaction as experienced by military spouses. This study was grounded in the family systems theory and involved …
Educator Perceptions Of Restorative Justice Practices That Provide Academic Support For Students With Adverse Childhood Experiences, Brigid Sullivan Ripley
Educator Perceptions Of Restorative Justice Practices That Provide Academic Support For Students With Adverse Childhood Experiences, Brigid Sullivan Ripley
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
The phenomenon of adverse childhood experiences (ACE) has been of interest to scholars since the late 1990s when their impact on life outcomes concerning physical and mental health was first acknowledged. Educators are challenged to support students who have experienced ACE, but many have implemented alternative practices such as restorative justice (RJ) to support students’ academic needs. There is insufficient empirical evidence to determine how elements of RJ support high school students who have experienced ACE. The purpose of this qualitative case study was to investigate the RJ practices that teachers, administrators, and other school personnel have implemented to support …
Journalism Graduates’ Perceptions And Experiences Of Internships And Employment, Breanne L. Ahearn
Journalism Graduates’ Perceptions And Experiences Of Internships And Employment, Breanne L. Ahearn
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Graduates who do not have an internship show greater difficulty in obtaining gainful employment compared to those who do have an internship. However, simply believing that internships may translate into employment does not explain how students perceive the role of the internship in obtaining employment in the field. The purpose of the study was to investigate the graduates’ perceptions and experiences of how internships might affect journalism majors’ gaining employment in the field within 6 months of graduation. Kolb’s four stages of experiential learning theory was used as the conceptual framework to investigate how journalism-related major graduates described their journalism …

Insider Threats' Behaviors And Data Security Management Strategies, Gladys C. Cooley
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
As insider threats and data security management concerns become more prevalent, the identification of risky behaviors in the workplace is crucial for the privacy of individuals and the survival of organizations. The purpose of this three-round qualitative Delphi study was to identify real-time consensus among 25 information technology (IT) subject matter experts (SMEs) in the Washington metropolitan area about insider threats and data security management. The SMEs participating in this study were adult IT professionals and senior managers with certification in their area of specialization and at least 5 years of practical experience. The dark triad theory was the conceptual …
Exploring African American Women’S Transition From High School To A Postsecondary Setting, Keniesha Johnson
Exploring African American Women’S Transition From High School To A Postsecondary Setting, Keniesha Johnson
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
AbstractAfrican American women encounter obstacles that diminish the effectiveness of mental health treatment received through postsecondary school-based service. Consequently, there is a reduction in the population’s socioeconomic outcomes. The purpose of the study was to increase awareness of the mental health treatment experience of African American women and identify strategies that would be helpful to prepare African American women for the postsecondary setting. Black feminist theory was used to guide the research questions for the study, which examined the experiences of African American female students and identified strategies used by certified school social workers, that African American women thought prepared …
