In The Shadow Of The Carceral State: The Evolution Of Feminist And Institutional Activism Against Sexual Violence, Bethany Munyeen Gen
In The Shadow Of The Carceral State: The Evolution Of Feminist And Institutional Activism Against Sexual Violence, Bethany Munyeen Gen
Honors Papers
This paper aims to trace the development of carceral feminist politics within United States institutions and feminist movements. I first define and describe Modern Carceral Feminism. I then argue that the development of Modern Carceral Feminism hinged on two different political moments: the development of a homogenous understanding of women’s oppression in the second wave feminist movement, and the rising political salience of racialized crime leading to punitive policies nationwide in the mid-to-late 1970s and 1980s. As a result, carceral feminist logics became pervasive within institutional and feminist activism against sexual violence. By the 1980s, reactionary feminist anti-violence movements, like …

Lack Of Access To Quality Healthcare In Peru, Spencer Hart
Lack Of Access To Quality Healthcare In Peru, Spencer Hart
Ballard Brief
The current healthcare systems in Peru leave millions without easy access to medical attention, many of whom are also living in poverty. It is difficult for the governing bodies to include everyone in healthcare coverage plans and make the necessary medical resources accessible. The lack of qualified medical professionals. in part due to a migration of doctors out of the country to seek better opportunities elsewhere, also contributes to the problem. As can be expected, these and other factors lead to greater amounts of illness and deaths than other countries that have more developed healthcare. These problems have also caused …

Child Labor Trafficking In The Volta Region Of Ghana, Cadee Wambolt
Ballard Brief
Ghana's Lake Volta region is home to over 20,000 child slaves. Due to a combination of preexisting social problems and a distortion of old cultural practices. a dangerous cycle of human trafficking and child labor is occurring. Most of the child slaves on Lake Volta are doing work that is considered hazardous. In fact, Lake Volta attracts a lot of attention for its reputation as an especially traumatic and abusive avenue for child trafficking. Due to its particularly dangerous and abusive nature. these victims of child trafficking are subject to extreme levels of abuse. trauma. death and disease. and a …
Lack Of Menstrual Hygiene Management Among Women And Girls In East Africa, Lizzie Kearon
Lack Of Menstrual Hygiene Management Among Women And Girls In East Africa, Lizzie Kearon
Ballard Brief
Women and girls in East Africa, as well as many other parts of the world, live in a culture where menstruation and reproductive health are not discussed. This is because menstruation and anything related to it is considered taboo. Both women and girls often do not understand the reproductive cycle of their bodies or know how to manage their menstruation. Girls commonly miss or drop out of school because they do not understand what is happening to them or are unaware of how to hygienically manage their natural cycle. The issue is perpetuated by menstrual hygiene products being expensive and …
Lives Well-Lived: My Danish American Ancestors In Shelby And Audubon Counties, Iowa, Cindy Larsen
Lives Well-Lived: My Danish American Ancestors In Shelby And Audubon Counties, Iowa, Cindy Larsen
The Bridge
My childhood was filled with my parents’ voices describing their love of history and knowledge of their Danish heritage in conversations that linger in my memory. My mother, Elizabeth Aagaard Larsen, and dad, Chester B. Larsen, were both children of Danish immigrants to the communities of Elk Horn and Kimballton, Iowa.

From Bornholm To Jamestown: C. C. Beck And The Settlement Of Danish Immigrants In Chautauqua County, New York And Warren County, Pennsylvania, John Everett Jones
The Bridge
One of the earliest Danish immigrant settlements in North America was a community in western New York and northwestern Pennsylvania called Jamestown. Marcus P. Jacobsen has been recognized as the first person from Bornholm to settle in the Jamestown area1 in 1855 or 1856, and early on, members of this community came almost exclusively from Bornholm. However, histories have not recognized the importance of Charles C. Beck in the origin of this community. Emigration from Bornholm has been written about by Henning Bender2 this article adds to that research by situating Beck within the larger community of Danish immigrants who …

Nordlyset And The New York City Danish Community, 1891-1953, Catrine Kyster Giery
The Bridge
The Danish community in New York City was never more than a speck on the Big Apple. At the same time, however, New York City and the surrounding area was for decades—and still is—home to a larger number of Danish-born people than most other places in the United States. Unfortunately, New York City’s popularity among Danes has not translated into a large amount of historical research about the city’s Danish community.

Population Health
Rural areas of the United States may be vulnerable to an HIV or hepatitis C (HCV) outbreak among persons who inject drugs. Researchers at the University of Southern Maine’s Rural Health Research Center examined the capacity of rural public health systems to prepare for, identify, control, and respond to an HIV or HCV outbreak. Through semi-structured interviews with 36 state and local public health professionals from six rural states, we sought to understand the challenges related to HIV, HCV, and serving rural persons who inject drugs and to identify strategies to address those challenges. Challenges limiting the public health capacity …

Nueva Cadiz Beads In The Americas: A Preliminary Compositional Comparison, Heather Walder, Alicia Hawkins, Brad Loewen, Laure Dussubieux, Joseph A. Petrus
BEADS: Journal of the Society of Bead Researchers
Nueva Cadiz and associated beads are among the earliest categories of European glass beads found in the Americas. Named after the site in Venezuela where they were first identified, these tubular, square-sectioned beads occur in regions of 16th-century Spanish colonial trade. A similar style occurs around Lake Ontario in northeastern North America in areas of 17th-century Dutch and French colonial trade. We compare the chemical composition of beads from South America and Ontario, Canada, to explore their provenience and technology. Differences in key trace elements (Hf, Zr, Nd) strongly indicate separate sand origins for the two bead groups. Comparison with …

Grateful To Be There But The Nightmare Continues: Life In A German Refugee Camp, Eckhard Rolz
Grateful To Be There But The Nightmare Continues: Life In A German Refugee Camp, Eckhard Rolz
School of American and Global Studies Faculty Publications with a Focus on Modern Languages and Global Studies
Over 2 million refugees have come to Germany over the past few years. When the first wave of refugees arrived, Germany and German authorities were utterly unprepared for the task at hand. As a result, many new arrivals suffered needlessly. Students from South Dakota State University had the opportunity to work with refugees in southern Germany and learn about their plights, their hardships, their perilous trek to Germany, and the problems they faced after their arrival. They also investigated living conditions, support systems, the general treatment by government officials, and conducted interviews to learn about their treacherous journey to Germany. …

An Ardl Approach In Studying The Impact Of Asf And Selected Factors On The Philippine Pork Market Retail Price, Lara Paul A. Ebal
Journal of Economics, Management and Agricultural Development
This study aimed to explore the impact of the farmgate price of hogs, the volume of hog production, the volume of imported pork, the market retail price per kilo of dressed chicken, the quantity of pork consumed by the population, the GDP per capita, and African Swine Fever (ASF) on the pork market retail price in the Philippines. The Autoregressive Distributed Lag (ARDL) approach was implemented to model the pork price using quarterly data from 2000 to 2020. The long-run model showed that farmgate price, hog production, and imported pork during the presence of ASF could affect pork price. Moreover, …

Investigating The Intention To Work Overseas Among Filipino Engineering Students By Testing A Structural Equation Model Based On An Extended Theory Of Planned Behavior, John Lester Remot, Maria Liezel P. Caroche, Alan Marco S. Mercado, Marc Joseph S. Villanueva
Journal of Economics, Management and Agricultural Development
This study examined the antecedents of Filipino engineering students’ intention to work overseas, applying the theory of planned behavior (TPB) (involving attitude, subjective norm, and perceived behavioral control) extended with migration push and pull factors (PPF) (involving salary and compensation, career prospects, and quality of life). Structural equation modeling using 1,706 questionnaire responses proved that the PPF dimensions were indistinguishable, while another factor distinct from attitude, evoking the perceived enjoyment of working overseas (PEJ), emerged. The TPB and PPF were identified as important antecedents of intention (R2 = 0.667). PEJ had no direct effect on it but was significant along …

Mothers In A 'Strange Land': Migrant Women Farmers' Reproductive Health In The Brong-Ahafo Region Of Ghana, Bipasha Baruah, Jemima Nomunume Baada, Isaac Luginaah
Data and Test Instruments
As a coping strategy towards climate variability, smallholders from the Upper West Region (UWR) migrate to rural farming areas in the Brong- Ahafo Region (BAR) of Ghana in search of better livelihoods. Although previous migrations were seasonal and male dominated, recent migrations have become permanent and involve more women migrating. Despite these changing dynamics, little is known about the effects of internal migration on women’s reproductive health in rural migration destinations. Using qualitative methods, we explored migrant women farmers’ reproductive health experiences in BAR. Findings from our study reveal that migrant women face limited autonomy in family planning decisions, lack …
Closing The Gender Gaps In Energy Sector Recruitment, Retention And Advancement, Bipasha Baruah
Closing The Gender Gaps In Energy Sector Recruitment, Retention And Advancement, Bipasha Baruah
Data and Test Instruments
Globally, women represent only 22 per cent of the oil and gas industry and 32 per cent of the renewable energy workforce. Women are particularly underrepresented in the energy sector in jobs that require science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) training (28 per cent) compared to non-STEM technical jobs (35 per cent) and administrative positions (45 per cent). In this chapter, we complement secondary knowledge synthesis of peer-reviewed and practitioner literature with primary interview data from Canada to understand barriers and opportunities for women’s entry, retention and advancement in the energy sector in Canada and other Organisation for Economic Cooperation …
Next Generation Of Knowledge Partnerships For Global Development. Introduction, Bipasha Baruah
Next Generation Of Knowledge Partnerships For Global Development. Introduction, Bipasha Baruah
Data and Test Instruments
Despite the rich potential benefits to be had from collaborations amongst practitioners and academic communities in the Canadian global development field, there is a general sense that such exchanges happen much less frequently than they could. The Next Generation programme, which underpins this special issue, presented an opportunity to address knowledge gaps in the current ecosystem of academic-civil society organization (CSO) collaborations, producing new research presented in this issue. Between 2016 and 2019, the NextGen Program sought to test and foster different ways and models of facilitating cross-sectoral collaboration between academics and CSOs in Canada. This introduction takes a reflexive …
The Impact Of Covid-19 On The Use Of Academic Library Resources, Ruth S. Connell, Lisa C. Wallis, David Comeaux
The Impact Of Covid-19 On The Use Of Academic Library Resources, Ruth S. Connell, Lisa C. Wallis, David Comeaux
Library Faculty Publications
The COVID-19 pandemic has greatly impacted higher education, including academic libraries. This paper compares the use of library resources (including interlibrary loan, website and discovery tool pageviews, database use, patron interactions, etc.) at three university libraries before and after the pandemic. The latter part of the 2019 and 2020 spring semesters are the timeframes of focus, although two control timeframes from earlier in those semesters are used to determine how the semesters differed when the coronavirus was not a factor. The institutions experienced similar patterns of use across many metrics.
Political Partisanship And Female High School Students Who Physically Fight On Campus, Chance Honeycutt, Wayne L. Davis
Political Partisanship And Female High School Students Who Physically Fight On Campus, Chance Honeycutt, Wayne L. Davis
Lincoln Memorial University Journal of Humanities and Social Sciences
Democrats and Republicans have different platforms on how to modify the social learning environment. According to the social learning theory, people learn to be aggressive through their life experiences. These experiences include personally observing the behaviors of others and modeling them. Personal behaviors are a product of learning the norms, values, and behaviors of society. Indeed, learning is a by-product of the interaction with others and is influenced by perceptions of the legal code. Because people experience culture conflict when they are exposed to different and opposing attitudes of acceptable behaviors, and because Democrats and Republicans have different attitudes toward …

Servant Leadership As A Framework For Building University Community: The Intersecting Missions Of Faith Partners And Public Higher Education Institutions, Katie B. Gooch, Elizabeth Roderick, Meghan Z. Gough Ph.D., Lynn E. Pelco Ph.D.
L. Douglas Wilder School of Government and Public Affairs Publications
As community engagement approaches continue to expand in urban-identified public colleges and universities, so have innovative community-university partnerships that now span a wide range of public and private sector organizations. Partnerships between public universities and faith-based institutions, however, have sometimes lagged because public universities have yet to appreciate ways in which their public missions align with those of local faith-based organizations. This paper examines the partnership established between a large, urban-identified, public research university and one of its campus ministries to implement a servant leadership model and asset-based community development methodology designed to enable the university community to work collaboratively, …
