Geophysical Survey Of North Kakalin Village On Wisconsin Site Ou-0115, Kaukauna, Peter N. Peregrine Feb 2021

Geophysical Survey Of North Kakalin Village On Wisconsin Site Ou-0115, Kaukauna, Peter N. Peregrine

Archaeological Reports

Between September and November 2020 Lawrence University conducted a geophysical survey in the area immediately northwest of the historic Grignon Mansion. The survey was undertaken to follow up on a previous geophysical survey, conducted in 2018, that identified possible prehistoric structures in that area. A combination of high-resolution magnetic, soil resistivity, and ground penetrating radar surveys were conducted over a 40 meter by 40 meter area in anticipation of better resolving these structures. The survey identified a number of features that appear to support the results of the 2018 survey, thus strengthening the case for the presence of undisturbed prehistoric …

Student Debt In The Mountain West, Class Of 2019, Kristian Thymianos, Eshaan Vakil, Olivia K. Cheche, Caitlin Saladino, William E. Brown Jr.

Higher Education

In 2020, Americans collectively owed $1.6 trillion in student debt, making it the second-largest consumer debt category nationwide. 1 However, this debt is not distributed evenly across the country. This fact sheet reports data on the amount and prevalence of student debt in Mountain West states (Arizona, Colorado, Nevada, New Mexico, and Utah), as originally reported by the Institute for College Access and Success (ICAS) study, Student Debt and the Class of 2019.2 This fact sheet also reports figures relating to the amount and prevalence of student debt for graduates from Nevada’s two public research universities: the University of Nevada, …

The Use Of Coping Skills In The Juvenile Justice System, Alexandria Stepka Feb 2021

The Use Of Coping Skills In The Juvenile Justice System, Alexandria Stepka

Master of Arts in Criminal Justice Leadership

The juvenile justice system doesn’t have the proper rehabilitation tools. Inside private companies, there are different coping skills, methods and practices that continue to change with society. A few years down the road, people will continue to adapt but need to know the best options to do so. Ethically, a company will fail without structure. Each one has their own set of morals in need of a leader and group of followers. History has proven the inaccuracy in punishment and false documentation. By constant change and confidence, society can avoid these issues and make stronger delinquent counseling programs. Inside these …

Using Verb Extension To Gauge Children’S Verb Meaning Construals: The Case Of Chinese, Weiyi Ma, Roberta Michnick Golinkoff, Lulu Song, Kathy Hirsh-Pasek

General Human Environmental Sciences Faculty Publications and Presentations

Verb extension is a crucial gauge of the acquisition of verb meaning. In English, studies suggest that young children show conservative extension. An important test of whether an early conservative extension is a general phenomenon or a function of the input language is made possible by Chinese, a language in which verbs are more frequent and acquired earlier. This study tested whether 3-year-old Chinese children extended a group of familiar verbs that specify various ways to carry objects. Shown videos that portrayed typical, mid-typical, or atypical carrying actions (as verified by Chinese adults), children were asked to judge whether they …

Parental Relationship Quality, Shyness, And College Academic Success, Nathan M. Fields Feb 2021

Parental Relationship Quality, Shyness, And College Academic Success, Nathan M. Fields

Undergraduate Research (Journal)

The goal of this study was to investigate how positive parental relationships and shyness affect the academic performance of college students. A total of 123 first year college students reported on the quality of their relationships with a father and mother figure and their shyness during the fall of their first year. The students’ cumulative grade point average (GPA) and retention information (graduated versus not graduated) was provided by the college registrar’s office five years later. Positive relationships with fathers predicted higher GPA and greater likelihood of graduation. In contrast, shyness and positive relationships with mothers did not significantly predict …

This review paper provides an integrative account regarding neurophysiological correlates of positive emotions and affect that cumulatively contribute to the scaffolding for happiness and wellbeing in humans and other animals. This paper reviews the associations among neurotransmitters, hormones, brain networks, and cognitive functions in the context of positive emotions and affect. Consideration of lifespan developmental perspectives are incorporated, and we also examine the impact of healthy social relationships and environmental contexts on the modulation of positive emotions and affect. The neurophysiological processes that implement positive emotions are dynamic and modifiable, and meditative practices as well as flow states that change …

Import Restrictions By Eco-Certification: Quantity Effects On Tropical Timber Production, Matthew T. Cole, Jacqueline M. Doremus, Stephen F. Hamilton Feb 2021

Import Restrictions By Eco-Certification: Quantity Effects On Tropical Timber Production, Matthew T. Cole, Jacqueline M. Doremus, Stephen F. Hamilton

Economics

Eco-certification standards are increasingly used by industrial countries to restrict imports of foreign goods produced using unsustainable practices. Import restrictions on eco-certified goods limit the trade of goods to the home country, but also serve to segment global demand into separate regions for conventional goods and certified goods, altering market structure and equilibrium prices in a manner that can work against sustainability goals. In this paper, we examine the effect of recent import restrictions in the US, EU, Canada, and Japan that require tropical timber products produced in Central Africa to be eco-certified. Using panel data of timber production in …

Participating artists: Ashley, Claudia, Daniel, Izenia, Jennifer, Keyleth, Musta'an, and Perla.

Photography is a tool that can help us to “SEE.” What does this mean? If we are not visually impaired, we can, of course, physically see. But how much do we miss seeing? How much do we take for granted unless we take the time to look? With assignments that hope to inspire careful observation, we can use the camera to observe things in our familiar surroundings in quite extraordinary ways. Photography can help us become more observant and help us have a fulfilling visual life. During this time …

Occupational Licensing And Immigrants, Hugh Cassidy, Tennecia Dacass Feb 2021

Occupational Licensing And Immigrants, Hugh Cassidy, Tennecia Dacass

Economics Faculty Scholarship

This study examines the incidence and impact of occupational licensing on immigrants using two sources of data: the Current Population Survey and the Survey of Income and Program Participation. We find that immigrants are significantly less likely to have a license than similar natives and that this gap is largest for men, workers in the highest education level, and nonnaturalized immigrants. The licensing rate increases with years since migration and shows large variation by immigrants’ region of origin. A lack of English proficiency reduces the probability that an immigrant has a license. The wage premium from having a license is …

Invitational Vulnerability: Practices That Increase Communal Resiliency By Nurturing Belonging Across Difference, Jenn Rombeek Burnett Feb 2021

Invitational Vulnerability: Practices That Increase Communal Resiliency By Nurturing Belonging Across Difference, Jenn Rombeek Burnett

Doctor of Ministry

The mental health crisis, rising individualism, polarization and conflict aversion are key factors preventing Canadians from building the bonds necessary for individual and communal flourishing. Communal Christian resilience will be characterized by love across differences. Drawing on psychology and neuro-theology, this paper suggests communal practices of eating, play, service and prayer will contribute to reducing anxiety, moving responses from the sympathetic to the parasympathetic region of the brain. By activating neurogenesis and utilizing storytelling to encourage neuro-coupling, collaborative meaning-making can effectively build resilient communities.

The table facilitates exchange that encourages personal histories and cultural expressions to be shared. It provides …

Bracing For Impact: A Review Of Ontario Municipalities’ Budgeting & Alignment To Asset Management, Jonathon Graham Feb 2021

Bracing For Impact: A Review Of Ontario Municipalities’ Budgeting & Alignment To Asset Management, Jonathon Graham

MPA Major Research Papers

The purpose of this paper is to investigate emerging best practices in the municipal sector arising from the implementation of Ontario Regulation 588/17 – Asset Management Planning for Municipal Infrastructure and to assess the extent to which these best practices have been adopted by Ontario municipalities. The sample pool consists of three municipalities, falling into two tier levels of municipal government. Tiers are defined by characteristics such as population and density, which often correlates to a municipalities asset inventory. The lower tier municipalities in the sample are the Town of Minto and the Town of Petrolia. The single tier sample …

Schrödinger Filtering: A Precise Eeg Despiking Technique For Eeg-Fmri Gradient Artifact, Gabriel B. Benigno, Ravi S. Menon, Hacene Serrai Feb 2021

Schrödinger Filtering: A Precise Eeg Despiking Technique For Eeg-Fmri Gradient Artifact, Gabriel B. Benigno, Ravi S. Menon, Hacene Serrai

Brain and Mind Institute Researchers' Publications

In EEG data acquired in the presence of fMRI, gradient-related spike artifacts contaminate the signal following the common preprocessing step of average artifact subtraction. Spike artifacts compromise EEG data quality since they overlap with the EEG signal in frequency, thereby confounding frequency-based inferences on activity. As well, spike artifacts can inflate or deflate correlations among time series, thereby confounding inferences on functional connectivity. We present Schrödinger filtering, which uses the Schrödinger equation to decompose the spike-containing input. The basis functions of the decomposition are localized and pulse-shaped, and selectively capture the various input peaks, with the spike components clustered at …

Cracking The Code Of Place Value: The Relationship Between Place And Value Takes Years To Master, Pierina Cheung, Daniel Ansari Feb 2021

Cracking The Code Of Place Value: The Relationship Between Place And Value Takes Years To Master, Pierina Cheung, Daniel Ansari

Brain and Mind Institute Researchers' Publications

Place value, which underlies the meanings of multidigits, encompasses the principle of position and base-10 rules. To understand 65, one needs to know that the digits 6 and 5 occupy different positions and thus represent ordered values of different magnitudes (i.e., the principle of position) and that the value of each position is determined by base-10 rules (i.e., the rightmost position is 100, followed by 101, 102, etc.). Without the principle of position, children cannot construct meanings for multidigits. Previous studies have shown that children do not know the exact value of digit positions until the early elementary school years, …

Capacity Of Rural Counties To Address An Hiv Or Hepatitis C Outbreak, Jennifer Lenardson Mhs, Jaclyn Janis Rn, Mph, Amanda Burgess Mppm, Karen Pearson Mlis, Ma, Martha Elbaum Mpa

Population Health

HIV and hepatitis C (HCV) are major public health concerns in the United States and are a focus of significant federal health policy attention. Rural counties may be potentially vulnerable to an HIV or HCV outbreak among persons who inject drugs due to greater prevalence of high-risk injection practices as well as limited public health capacity to prevent, prepare for, and respond to an HIV or HCV outbreak. This study identified states potentially at risk for an HIV or HCV outbreak and used data from the 2016 Association of State and Territorial Health Officials (ASTHO) Profile Survey, 2016 National Association …

Is There Any Relationship Between Child Labour, Crime Rates And Country Income Per Capita?, Cheick Wague, Nandakumar P. Warrier Feb 2021

Is There Any Relationship Between Child Labour, Crime Rates And Country Income Per Capita?, Cheick Wague, Nandakumar P. Warrier

International Review of Business and Economics

Child labour exists in varying degrees in virtually all countries aspiring to reach high income status. The prevalence of child labour and associated criminal activities have been portrayed in the 19th century novels of Charles Dickens, perhaps most vividly in the character ‘Fagin’ in the novel ‘Oliver Twist’. It seems clear that the early years of the industrial revolution in Britain gave rise to demand for increased child labour and also provided fertile ground for criminal activities. However, it is also evident from the experience of the high-income countries that the hallowed peaks of the development process witness an end …

An Empirical Analysis Of Dimensional Trust In Online Group Buying Sites, Varinder Sharma Feb 2021

An Empirical Analysis Of Dimensional Trust In Online Group Buying Sites, Varinder Sharma

International Review of Business and Economics

Building websites that generate adequate perception of ability, integrity, and benevolence dimensions of trust amongst even the first-time visitors is critically important for online group buying (OGB) sites; otherwise, visitors may be reluctant to transact. Current literature suggests that certain website features can induce overall trust perception (TP); however, their impact on specific trust dimensions has received little attention resulting in scholarly and managerial lacunae to precisely diagnose and remedy the problem with TP. To address this knowledge gap, this study first categorizes the trust-inducing features and then explores their impact on the trust dimensions of an OGB website in …

A Study On Sustainability Of Payment Banks In India Using Technology Acceptance Model, Thilak Venkatesan, Samitha Ss

International Review of Business and Economics

Payment banks are new era banks that provide limited services but with simple access. The Reserve Bank of India established it with an aim to offer remittance services to migrant labor workforce, low-income households, small businesses, and other unorganized sector entities. Awareness plays a major role in the mindset of the people towards the digitalized mode of the payment system. Payment banks are currently facing many challenges as they are not allowed to lend money. Their major source of income comes only from the interest of the government securities in which they can invest. Despite all these, payment banks are …
