The coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic impacted socio-economic stability and food systems in the U.S. and worldwide. To better understand food access challenges and needs of those significantly impacted by the pandemic, an online survey was distributed in the San Francisco Bay Area from August to November of 2020. A total of 726 participants completed the survey who were recruited through paid Facebook ads and community partners outreach. This report features key results from the survey regarding changes in food security rates, food access challenges, and coping strategies used during the pandemic. Some of the key findings include: 1) There was a …

Japanese Criminal Justice: A Comparative Legal History Perspective, Koji Fujimoto
Japanese Criminal Justice: A Comparative Legal History Perspective, Koji Fujimoto
Japanese Society and Culture
The Carlos Ghosn case has focused the world’s attention on Japan’s criminal justice system. In particular, the system has been subject to intense criticism, condemning its reliance on confessions in investigation, and for proof of guilt. The investigative approach of using physical restraints on suspects and defendants to coerce confessions is critically referred to as “hostage justice”. While the Japanese Ministry of Justice and the Public Prosecutor’s Office have responded to such criticisms by arguing for the uniqueness of the legal system, the problematic nature of this aspect of Japanese criminal justice cannot be denied, as noted by past false …

Online Divorce Education: Learning From Participants Who Want More, Joshua J. Turner, Kay Bradford, David G. Schramm, Brian J. Higginbotham, Olena Kopystynska, Melissa M. Ferguson
Journal of Human Sciences and Extension
Divorce education is designed for divorcing parents with minor children, and in a growing number of states, participation has become court-mandated to finalize a divorce. To increase accessibility, some states have adopted brief, online formats for divorce education programming. Evaluations are encouraging; however, less is known about how opinions on course length relate to participants’ views on the benefits of their participation. This study analyzed qualitative data from parents (n = 41) who thought their mandated divorce education course was too short. Results indicate that participants thought the course increased their knowledge of divorce-related matters. They also suggested improvements related …

Grasping Performance Depends Upon The Richness Of Hand Feedback., Prajith Sivakumar, Derek J Quinlan, Kevin M Stubbs, Jody C Culham

Although visual feedback of the hand allows fast and accurate grasping actions, little is known about whether the nature of feedback of the hand affects performance. We investigated kinematics during precision grasping (with the index finger and thumb) when participants received different levels of hand feedback, with or without visual feedback of the target. Specifically, we compared performance when participants saw (1) no hand feedback; (2) only the two critical points on the index finger and thumb tips; (3) 21 points on all digit tips and hand joints; (4) 21 points connected by a "skeleton", or (5) full feedback of …
Beyond Surviving: Identifying How To Support Individuals Living With Mental Illness And/Or Substance Use Difficulties To Thrive Following Homelessness In Kingston, Ontario, Carrie Marshall
Occupational Therapy Publications
While unhoused, persons who have experienced homelessness are frequently consumed with securing the necessary conditions to meet their basic needs including finding a place to stay for the night, finding food, and keeping safe. In other words, they are simply trying to survive. It is frequently assumed that when individuals secure a tenancy following homelessness, that their life naturally improves for the better in most or all areas of their lives. Unfortunately, recent research suggests that many people who secure housing after homelessness languish and continue to live in a state of survival. While the importance of supporting individuals to …

The Authors Alliance Partner Program (A2P2; https://www.authorsalliance.org/a2p2/) is a recent addition to the educational content from the Authors Alliance. This nonprofit advocacy organization aims “to advance the interests of authors who want to serve the public good by sharing their creations broadly.” And this new initiative provides prêt-à-porter instructional material with the express purpose of supporting the scaling of rights–related programming—a goal that distinguishes A2P2 from other well-established and deeply valuable copyright-focused resources (Authors Alliance, 2020). While copyright touches nearly all we do in libraries, outreach in this area can often fall to scholarly communication or copyright librarians. As …

Including External Repositories In The Discovery Experience: Librarian Perspectives And Trends, Rebecca A. Nous
University Libraries Faculty Scholarship
The transition to a more unified discovery environment that encompasses both traditional library catalog content along with articles, streaming media, institutional repository content, and other additional resources, has resulted in changes to the management of library resources and the research experience. A survey was conducted to assess librarian’s and library personnel’s attitude toward and experience with the inclusion of this additional content in their discovery tools’ search results, as well as to learn what content is being searched and who is involved in maintaining these systems. Respondents generally reported being satisfied with the discoverability of these additional resources in their …

How New England Island Residents View The Influence Of The Natural Environment In Their Lives, Nicole Kras, Jennifer Keenan
How New England Island Residents View The Influence Of The Natural Environment In Their Lives, Nicole Kras, Jennifer Keenan
Publications and Research
While the multiple benefits of natural environments on individual’s lives have been well noted, one population that is scarcely studied in current literature are adults who live on islands in the Northeast region of the United States. This is an important population to study because these adults live in a geographical location highly immersed in natural landscapes and they are likely to have a high exposure to natural environments. This exploratory study uses participant questionnaire responses (N=51) to gain insight into how they believe the natural environment influences their lives and offers guidance for future research. Residents identified benefits and …

Book Review: Russian Nuclear Orthodoxy: Religion, Politics, And Strategy, James R. Payton Jr.
Occasional Papers on Religion in Eastern Europe
In this book Dmitry Adamsky tells a remarkable story which, only thirty-five years ago, would have come across as a wild-eyed dream (or, possibly, nightmare). As he shows, though, this is not a phantasm: it is the reality in Russian today, a reality the rest of the world does well to take note of.

Assessing Rural And Urban Community Assets And Needs To Inform Extension Program Planning, Lendel Narine, Amanda D. Ali, Paul A. Hill
Journal of Human Sciences and Extension
A needs assessment is a useful tool for prioritizing community needs and allocating resources. Prioritizing community needs helps ensure Extension programs are relevant and targeted towards specific audiences. This study prioritized normative needs of urban and rural Utah residents using a needs assessment framework. Convenience data were gathered from 1,043 adult Utah residents, and the raking method was used to weigh the sample by selected population characteristics. Descriptive statistics (frequencies and nonparametric statistics) were used for data analysis. A calculated Point-Score represented the difference between residents’ perceived importance and satisfaction of various community assets. Results showed affordable housing, affordable medical …

First Things First: Assessing Needs, Comfort, And Role Clarity For Physical Activity Promotion, Laura E. Balis, Thomas E. Strayer Iii, Samantha M. Harden
Journal of Human Sciences and Extension
Extension has recently begun delivering physical activity programs, but delivering evidence-based interventions is a challenge. To increase adoption of evidence-based interventions, a better understanding of agents’ perceptions and needs is necessary. The purpose of this research was to conduct a readiness assessment to identify organizational factors and agent perceptions that speed or impede uptake of evidence-based physical activity programs. Data were gathered from agents through a sequential mixed-methods design informed by the RE-AIM (reach, effectiveness, adoption, implementation, maintenance) framework. A survey assessed current work status, demographic variables, physical activity levels, and time spent on programming tasks. Semi-structured focus group questions …

Integrating Policies, Systems, And Environments (Pse) Work Into Fcs Extension Programming: Lessons Learned From A Multi-State Training, Lisa T. Washburn, Heather Norman-Burgdolf, Karen L. Franck, Lauren E. Kennedy, Christopher Sneed
Journal of Human Sciences and Extension
Public health efforts have emphasized changes to policies, systems and environments (PSEs) to improve health behaviors for individuals and communities. Extension has increasingly emphasized these approaches, particularly for work of Family and Consumer Sciences (FCS) agents. In part, this emphasis on PSEs in Extension has been driven by SNAP-Ed and other federally funded initiatives, such as the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) High Obesity Programs (HOP). However, broader adoption and implementation of PSEs at the local level has lagged in some states for various reasons. These include limited understanding about PSE interventions and how this work fits with …

Decentralized Governments: Local Empowerment And Sustainable Development Challenges In Africa, George Atisa, Aziza Zemrani, Matthew Weiss
Public Affairs and Security Studies Faculty Publications
This study examines the extent to which decentralization is being utilized as a vehicle for sustainable economic development outcomes at all levels of governance in Africa. Research shows that decentralization is missing the triple-bottom line of sustainability: economic, social and environmental prosperity that meets current needs and does not take away from future generations in regions settled by indigenous communities. In this study, selected peer-reviewed literature and reports from conservation organizations on decentralization are analyzed. This research explores ways decentralization can be integrated with sustainability to minimize the short-term and long-run consequences of human actions on the environment at local …

In 2019, Maine’s Department of Health & Human Services received a $2.1 million grant from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) SUPPORT Act, establishing the SUPPORT for ME initiative within the Office of MaineCare Services. The primary goal of this planning grant is to increase MaineCare providers’ capacity to deliver Substance Use Disorder (SUD) treatment and recovery services for Medicaid beneficiaries. One key component of this project is an assessment to collect information from Maine organizations to help MaineCare better understand levels of care integrations within organizations and across several dimensions of care (“Care Integration Assessment”).
